Break Away

Rate this book
When Noah found himself in the small Midwestern town of Durand, he never dreamed he would stumble across the very thing he had been running from.

Besides the nightmares and agonizing guilt, the only haunting reminder binding him to his past was his step brother, Crew. The very reason that Cami no longer walked this earth.

The one thing that made Noah bear to go on, was to not feel at all.

That was, until Sofia stumbled into his life.

When Nonna passed away, Sofia’s mother slid down a slippery slope of addiction. Leaving Sofia the only one to care for her little brother.

The wall she had built up over the years, was the perfect defense against the nightmare she was living.

She was so close to a normal life, that she could taste it and nothing would stand in her way.

That was until Noah forced his way into her life.

Taking down the wall, she had worked so hard to build.

Break Away is a gritty, heart-rending love story by a very talented author. It's hard to believe this is Vanessa's debut novel. Her storytelling pulls you in and leaves you breathless. Noah and Sofia have a wonderful chemistry that has you rooting for them, while wondering how on earth they are going to make it work through all of their obstacles.
Lorenzo is a breath of fresh air, giving this story a sweet hopefulness throughout a painful yet riveting journey.

I gasped, shouted, laughed, and even shed some tears.

Vanessa has an incredible way with words, and I cannot wait to see how high she soars.

ARC review!!!

Oh, Noah and Sofia!! I absolutely loved these 2 characters. This is a fast paced romance, there are triggers, and Vanessa is a first time author!!

There is a lot of plot in this book, we start by learning about what life was like for Sofia growing up. Fast forward to her senior year of high school. Life isn’t easy when your mom is the town lay. Sofia had a very hard life, she had to learn at a young age to take care of herself. Her mother ended up pregnant and she now has a baby brother she takes care of. In comes the H. *swoons* I love the dominant, alphaholes. He of course comes with a dark past as well. And a dbag stepbrother Crew. Of course this has an HEA, and is a stand alone.

I loved this book, especially for a first time author. Just note, if you have triggers, this probably isn’t the book for you! Congrats on your first book Vanessa! I can’t wait to watch your success as a new author! 💜

I was honered to be a beta reader for this book. This is Vanessa's debut novel and she has some raw, genuine talent. She took feedback and put it into the book, making the ending one that will have you reaching for tissues, in a good way.

I loves Sophia. I love how she loved her little brother and sacrificed so much for him. She was a strong, take no crap, sassy young woman. There were times she definitely acted her young age, but there were times she was well beyond her years. My heart went out to her and her pain and struggle with her mother. No child should have to endure the way her mother treated her.

Noah, oh Noah. The epitome of alpha male. Sometimes his alpha self got on my nerves but Sophia held her own. And when you find out why he is the way he is, you just wanna hug him. He's broken too.

"We are two jagged pieces of glass that found each other before shattering into a million pieces."

Lorenzo is a a treat to read too. That little guy will tug your heartstrings too and the way Noah also loves him as Sophia does. Sophia does her best to make sure he maintains a happy environment despite their circumstances.

It's a long and hard road to a healing happy after for both Sophia and Noah, but both have to face truths and their pasts and let each other truly in.

Some trigger warnings do apply to this book but are not graphic and done tastefully in my opinion. Vanessa kept true to real life in some of these topics, which is also bittersweet.

When it comes out please pick up a copy. I was not paid to review or read this book. Just a beta reader to give my honest opinion. I can't wait to see where Vanessa's path as a writer takes her.

First I want to thank @author.jenniferhartmann for tagging me to see if I would be interested. And of course I was on it. I love to beta read for any author.

Second I obviously have to say a huge thank you to Vanessa to allow me to beta read your story.

Review: This story was a rollercoaster ride. It had heartbreak, love, hatred and hard times.

The storyline was great. There were some hard points in the story that would be faint of the heart. But it really drew you in in that moment.

The characters were in my opinion great. Though I struggled with one in particular because I just wanted to knock some sense into this person.

There were a couple of points that I didnt like or was a little put off by. But the story and the ending outweighed it.

The ending made me cry. That letter just got me good. And I found myself yelling at the main character for doing what she did. But then i look at it as being selfless. Instead of what she wants. She loved this person so much. But she had this undying love to do what was right. And I think that's what made the story.

Add on chapters to finish the story made this even more epic than it already was. I love what she did to finish the story off! It was beyond perfect and I feel it didn't need any change.

I ❤ Lorenzo!

If you’re looking for a small town romance, that’s gritty, tough, brave and courageous, then look no further! This story was devastatingly heartbreaking when reading everything Sophia had to sacrifice to survive and the things she needed to withstand to protect her younger brother. But don’t worry there is a happy ending!

Sophia has not had an easy life ever since her Nonna died. Her mother isn’t able to handle her death and ultimately turns to drugs and alcohol to cope. Unfortunately, this is where Sophia has to step up to take care of her little brother and shield him from the trauma that unfolds within their tiny trailer.

Then comes along Noah. Gah…Noah! Where can I find a man like him? He comes to town due to his company and is the step-brother to her mom’s current fling. It was instant attraction for Noah when he first laid eyes on Sophia. He was the perfect alpha male with the right amount of protectiveness for Sophia and her little brother Lorenzo. To watch the progression and struggles of Noah and Sophia’s relationship pulled at my heartstrings.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕. 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕.

There were so many emotions that I had the pleasure of experiencing while reading this story. Happiness, anger, sadness, heartbreak, and love. There were moments where I laughed from the banter between Noah and Sophia, and cried, especially reading Noah’s letter. To see the conflict and soul searching these characters needed to face head on was beautiful, raw and gut-wrenching.

I absolutely loved how the last chapter essentially was resembling the same lines from the first chapter. To see how the book comes full circle was so neat and something I had never seen before.

I don't even know where to start with this story, other than saying it was a damn fine book. Minutes on my kindle were non-existent, and the story had me engaged the whole way through. A book that you should definitely have on your TBR list.

Sofia and Noah meet by chance, and their lives are never the same again. To say they both have complicated lives is an understatement, so when they meet, sparks fly and it's something they both try to avoid, but in the end, they just become inevitable. Apart from the MC lineup, you will fall in love with Lorenzo in this book. He is just a cute little ball of fun and he just brought a smile to my face.

Overall the writing could've been a little stronger / sharper, but for a debut novel, it rocked my world. It gave me the story that kept me engaged the whole way, the love, the firey strong heroine that looked after herself despite everything against her. The hero that rocked up in a big ford pickup that loved with all his whole heart. Hot as hell with his fierce protector mode, wanted to share his heart with his loved ones till his last breath. It had the spice that I didn't expect and it had the gorgeous HEA. POV was set via both characters, although I felt that in the beginning, it was a case of deja-vu, once you start reading, you get the hang of how Vanessa ran with her chapters.

Bravo for a first attempt

I was pulled in within minutes, and enjoyed getting to know the characters. There was no stone left unturned in building up the depth and personalities of everyone in the story. This book will take you back to a time of young love, and those fresh, sometimes fast feelings that raced through us as we tried to navigate stepping over the threshold into adulthood. It was so easy to imagine Sofia's world, it was so well written that as I read, I couldn't help but feel as if I was reading someone's personal diary.
I kept turning the page, long into the night, anxious to learn more about them. I was rooting for Sofia and Noah to overcome everything, and everyone who gets in their way. Theirs isn't a simple, obvious romance...its more realistic than that. There's lots of caution, conflict, and soul searching involved. That is what kept me intrigued throughout. You'll find no cheese in this romance! Just a beautiful, raw, heart wrenching novella.

The back and forth banter in the beginning between Sofia and Noah all while they are fight their emotions, urges, whatever you want to call it makes you want to continue the story to find out what happens next to the both of them and how things work out. Sofia, of course, takes care of her little brother while going to school and Noah Has his own cleanup crew/company. Both dealing with trauma or bs in their lives they each have to find their way in this world one way or another. Of course like all good stories there's that "about freaking time" moment we all were waiting for and obviously got to love the fireworks once everything goes in the right direction. Love how feisty and stubborn they both are in just about every which way. Not going to give away much of the story but will say this book is definitely worth it in every aspect.

I was lucky enough to read this book throughout Vanessa’s writing stages and let me tell you I fell in love. This debut novel comes in the form of a sweet yet harrowing love story. Where the hero, heroine, and one sweet little boy will all capture your heart. Break Away takes you on a ride from start to finish and the character growth and development will leave you wishing for a happily ever after for this family of 3. Such a beautiful read and I can’t wait for this gem to enter the Amazon universe, so that so many more people can experience this unconventional love story.

The story was okay overall, but I wasn't a big fan of how the chapters would repeat, but from Noah's point of view. I also felt like everything in their relationship happened too quickly to be believable.

Just couldn’t finish

I made thru 48% of the book and I struggled to make it that far. I usually love reading a book that has both points of view, but I didn’t like how it was done here because it was just a repeat of the previous chapter. I also didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. I wish the author had put as much effort into developing a real relationship between the characters as she put into their sexual attraction and encounters. In all fairness, maybe that happened in the 52% of the book I couldn’t seem to force myself to read. I don’t know. If you are reading with the sole purpose of getting hot and bothered you will probably not be disappointed, but if you want a book where the characters and story draw you in as all their layers are peeled away this is not that kind of book.

Break Away is a heartbreaking story about overcoming family struggles, perseverance, and finding love.

Sophia, who is still in high school when we meet her, has a fiery side to her, but will do anything to keep the peace in her home. Having an addict as a mom means she will create as much semblance of normalcy as she can for her baby brother, even if that means missing out on much of her own childhood. When Crew moves in, a drunk who claims to love their mother, Sophia has another set of problems to worry about. Thankfully, Noah is there, her white knight. Though, we learn, Sophia doesn’t necessarily need a knight in shining armor. She is strong, and independent, and pretty damn kick ass on her own.

Noah too, has his fair share of trauma. And with the help of one another, both he and Sophia are able to overcome so much.

I absolutely loved this story and hope to read another by this author soon.

Noah and Sofia... Oh my gosh.. my heart. It blows my mind that this is Vanezsa Sheets debut! I fell in love with both of them so very quickly and they took more of my heart with each chapter. While I liked the dual POV it was a tad confusing as it was at times just a repeat of what happened in the last chapter but from a different person point of view. That being said.. that is the only thing I can say I didn't absolutely love about this book! Little Enzo made me want another baby lol Sofia is one of the strongest, bravest female characters I've read. She's gone through so much in her life and still pushes forward. Noah is a hunk a hunk of burning yum! 4 stars for me!

I really enjoyed this story. Sofia tugged on my heart strings from the very first chapter. I felt her pain and wanted nothing but happiness for her. Her struggle was so real and heart breaking. Once she meets Noah things start looking up but can she allow herself to grab on to his lifeline with both hands? This story will keep you on the edge of your seat, scrolling as fast as you can. I connected with these characters and felt their emotions. This was a very well written debut novel and I look forward to reading more from this new author.

Really great story with genuine, lovable characters. Inspiring story and great writing that kept me captivated. Finished in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The only breaks I took were those I had to because I couldn't read through my tears. Really great debut for this author, I will keep my eye out for more from Vanessa Sheets.

Wow, this is a rollercoaster of a book! There is so much hardship and tragedy as Sofia struggles to raise her little brother despite her mother’s neglect and addiction. However, Break Away is also filled with hope, and I admired Sofia’s strength and determination. Noah enters their lives with his own troubled past, but hopefully together they can break down their walls (with a lot of steam). 🔥 Little Enzo adds a touch of charm to this incredible story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a strong debut novel by the very talented Vanessa Sheets and I would love to read more of her stories!

I really enjoyed the book and I thought the author did an amazing job at showing just because you grew up in a bad place with horrible people, doesn’t mean you won’t make your way out or find love along the way. Definitely recommend!
