The Gateway opens. The Laen’aroth lies. And the Guardian’s out of time.
With her deadly magic now restored, Jessica Northwood is finally whole. But the last ruthless fragment of her past still hunts her down to finish what she started, and there’s nowhere left to hide.
Thanks to a warded rune slapped on her neck and the fae man who put it there against her will, Jessica now has complete control. And Leandras still can’t be trusted—even when he’s willing to risk his own life as much as hers. When the monster from her childhood comes knocking with a vengeance, not even the bank can protect her. The Gateway must be opened, and Leandras’ plan is as shady as he is. If they survive the darkness consuming the dying world behind that door, they can make their final stand against the Dalu’Rázj. But fighting the darkness isn’t so easy now that Jessica has embraced her own with open arms, and it’s impossible to tell which is worse.

So the fourth book in this series was a great one - full of twists and turns. Lots of questions were answered but it also left me with so many more!
At the end of the previous book, Jessica Northwood, proprietor of the Winthorpe & Dirledge Bank and Guardian of the Portal cast a spell to gain her own magic back and to work her magic along with the fae Leandras' to stop the Gateway and whatever is behind it from opening and coming through. But now she has no choice but to work closer with Leandras and head through that same Gateway into his own fae world, one which may be almost obliterated by the evil forces there. This is not really something Jessica is excited about doing, but if it is the only to stop the fae forces from invading and taking over Earth, then that is what she must do, but can she fully trust Leandras?
So many times through this book I thought Jessica was being overly paranoid about Leandras and his intentions and then he would reveal yet another secret he had deliberately kept from Jessica that made me think more like her - he cannot be fully trusted despite what Tabitha told her. I do hope that eventually he will fully tell her the truths about his "deals" and his secrets.
This new fae world was amazingly descriptive - everything was so detailed that you could imagine being there in this unusual, almost dystopian and scary world. I loved the giant worms (reminded me of the creatures in Tremors!) and the underworld garden!
I can't wait to read the next book in this series and see what happens now in this world and how Jessica and possibly Leandras will get back to the Bank. I did miss the Bank's little commentaries in the latter half of this book - it is such a hilarious character!

Woo! This may become a theme, but this one just became my new favorite of the series. I love how Hutson can keep me totally engaged in her stories while we're basically waiting for a clock to run out. There's so much tension and suspense, and that's even BEFORE we make it through the Gateway! What a ride, what a world, what a read. Can't wait for book 5!
“The Poisoned Veil” by Kathrin Hutson is fourth volume on the “Accessory to Magic” captivating urban fantasy series, that follows Jessica Northwood (FMC) in her epic journey since she ‘inherited’ the magic sentient bank, in her defense she was just looking for a work, and unemployed can’t be overly choosers. Since then Jessica has get a grip on the whole situation, aligned herself (more or less willingly) to Leandras, a conniving and equally fascinating Fae and finally regained the memories about the real purpose of the Gateway.
Now Jessica, the Guardian of the Gateway is running out of time, the Gateway is opening, and - even with her full control (due to the rune Leandras in one of his ‘wits’ carved on her) and her to its fullest restored magic – Jessica is about to fight her most dangerous fight, the one against her greatest fears, with only Leandras by her side. If only Leandras could be trusted, but to expect a Fae to change his ways, is about as hopeful as to expect a leopard to change its spots. The Gateway is opening no matter what, and to Jessica’s dismay Leandras has a plan, one of his typical Fae plans 😉
“Accessory to Magic” is a captivating series with offers a brand-new magical verse, fast-paced, full of twists and very unexpected turns, with a very healthy dose of humor, and a wonderful snarky, independent heroine, a take-nonsense, credible and instantly relatable heroine (Jessica); a wonderful companion (Leandras), never ever call him side-kick, he is a Fae, he would kick your behind, guarantee!; a sentient back (yeap!), and a very well-constructed story-arc.
The story is so much fun, it takes the reader along, rapidly jumping from chaos to chaos with Jessica, trying to assess Leandras mood while fighting both against and with the darkness, until the final stand against the Dalu’Rázj. But do not despair, it not the end yet, fortunately 😊 because we can’t get enough of this!
This is book four of the Accessory to Magic series and Jessica Northwood has now had her deadly magic all fully restored to herself. She is no longer hiding most of her magic from others, in an effort to keep the deadly beast that has been tracking her since she was fourteen, from finding her. She had undergone a painful spell to take her memories of that time in her life away permanently, but being brought back from the edge of death has returned her memories slowly back to her, especially after another spell was done to return her full magic to her and remove Mickey from her life. Leandras Vilafor has slapped a strange rune on her neck to supposedly keep her safe from the Gateway and its attacks on the bank, but he doesn’t know quite how it will react to her magic and she starts to lose huge chunks of time! She doesn’t feel like she can trust him still, but they have now performed the second stage to get the Gateway opened and there is no going back. She still doesn’t know why others call him a Laen’aroth, nor what this may mean to their relationship and whether she should be following his directions in what to do next.
Leandras has to go out and collect items needed to perform the last part of the sequence to open the Gateway and it will take a couple of days to percolate before it will suddenly open the Gateway. Whatever he did with the rune, has stopped the voices and clouds of green fog coming through the door at the top of the stairs. The bank is nervous of Jessica leaving it alone, while she travels through the portal to his original world, which has been destroyed by the Dalu’Razj. What exactly he needs to do once he is there, he isn’t keen to elaborate to her, but she definitely has to go with him as the Guardian of the Gateway! Before they go, she has a horrific nightmare of memories from her past, which actually turns into a reality and means the beast she hid her memories and magic for so many years, has managed to follow her trace again. Only problem being that she was asleep and couldn’t stop her own memories from working against her own safety. With her full magic back in her hands she is more dangerous than she has been in years. Her magic destroys and kills anything in her way, but even it can’t stop her memories when she is asleep.
The bank cannot protect her once she travels through the Gateway and she must hope that Leandras will actually manage to get her home safely. There is darkness taking over the world he and others come from and they need to stand against the Dalu’Razj, to not only save his world, but her as well, as each are connected. If his world is completely destroyed, hers will be next. He had shown her images of the damage to his world, but a lot has changed since he was last there. He has left powerful magical artifacts in certain places or with certain people, but everything looks vastly different and they will have to avoid a lot of dangers along the way. Many beings seem to recognise Leandras, but maybe not with very welcoming looks or open arms. He has made certain deals and promises, a long, long time ago, and it has taken him an exceedingly long time to come back to keep his end of the agreements. Jessica may be able to get some of the details from him after once terrible series of events, but he has hidden how important her role as the Guardian is, to some of what he has promised and what must yet be done. Their journey is far from over and it could get a lot more deadly, before it is over! I can’t wait to see what they must face next and whether the two will finally do something about the attraction that is hotting up between them. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
✳️✳️ONE SENSATIONAL ADVENTURE✳️✳️ Blazing bloomers becky! Kathrin outdoes herself once more unleashing one incredibly tumultuous, sinfully tantalizing, skillfully compelling, delightfully delectable, boot-stomping, rock-my-world landslide, skyrocketing this hot little number to staggering heights. Chicanery and mishaps run rampant, releasing all the spills, thrills and swirling feels, bursting those churning emotions into play front and center, exposing the riveting drama, gripping intrigue, underlying threats, escalating danger, spiraling suspense and unnerving situations ensue, observing the daunting struggles and formidable triumphs merge, cognizant of the perilous twists and wicked turns unfolding, wrapping this gem up sleek, shiny and tight. Entwined, combined and crisply coiled, exposing the soaring ups and agonizing downs breathtaking in it's simplicity and beautiful in it's depth, secrets confessed, revelations disclosed and promises pledged, propelling this baby to life flawlessly. The characters are complex, genuine and realistic with traits and qualities that balance and blend, with amazing depth and diversity with enough spice to add an extra kick to the mix. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Fabulous job Kathrin, thanks for sharing this awesome little gem with us.
A creepy next step in the adventure to save two worlds!
Book four in the Accessory to Magic series, I'm thrilled to say, finally gets us some of the answers that have been hanging over the heroes' heads all this time! After everything that's happened to Jessica so far, we're finally approaching the next stage of her/their quest, and we get to see what Xahar'áhsh looks like. Brilliantly creepy and disconcerting imagery of a ravaged world gets painted in full-sensory brush strokes, complete with narrator panic. And for all one might think Leandras' collecting a few things from different places might seem straightforward... it isn't. (Which is about par for the fae course at this point.)
The characters are finally sharing secrets with one another in a mutual fashion, and even as well-developed as they are, there's room to grow. The other realm challenges both Jessica and Leandras with things they were certain were impossible, leading to much clashing of wills—both against one another and against their own perceptions of reality. This witty (and yes, downright mouthy) duo has a lot on their plate, but will still make you laugh even in the depths of desperate circumstances. This book really feels like the quest is in full swing, rather than the various stages they passed to get themselves to this point.
Loved it; can't wait for the final book!

Jessica's magic is finally restored after all the plot twists and turns that have been thrown in her way. She even gets an extra in healing which does not seem to be part of the standard vestrohím witch package. Having her powers restored, it's now time for Jessica and Leandras to open the gateway and visit Xahar’áhsh. While this is happening, we get some of the answers as to why Jessica had lost her memories and most of her magic and even some answers about the history of the Bank. Now it's time for Leandras to supply some answers of his own though that may require some mild torture.
This was a very enjoyable entry in the series though I regretted that one of my favourite characters the Bank was not able to be present in Xahar’áhsh. I am looking forward with great anticipation to the next entry in the series.
All along Jessica has been stubborn about allowing others to help her. Despite having to rethink that she is fighting it as strongly as before. But, when you are dealing with demons from your past that could kill you, literally, it would be wise to grow up about it. This book had the main characters you have grown to like. However, the first 20%+ is almost a circular conversation with Jessica and the bank or Leandras. Then the next section is about her battle to not accept help from Leandras even though she needs it. The last 30%, I won't spoil the ending. Overall I did not enjoy this book as much since I prefer books with action and less introspection. What this book did though is advance the questionable friendship between Leandras and Jessica.

Jessica is on fire and having a hell of a time with Leandras. The walk into and out of the portal isn't as easy or anything close to what Leandras expected and poor Jessica is in over her head! The stumble along, find the first 2 items they need, are threatened, almost eaten, and getting used to this place is no cake walk! Jessica is doing a damned good job of acclimating though and finding out a lot of lil secrets about Leandras along the way. We end at the Laenmur stronghold and Jessica decides she liked that kiss from Leandras and going forward she is deciding to step up into her Guardian shoes and own that job. Looking forward to the next installment.... the adventure proves to be exciting!!!!

Jessica Northwood has survived the battle for the coin but now the time has come to open the Gateway and join with Leandras in a mission to save her world and his. This time there will be no Bank or magic lizards to help her and if they lose the war she will not be coming back to Earth.
I gobbled up this book like it was a hot, fresh Philly cheesesteak and I am ready to start on the next course! I received an advance copy but my review is voluntary and honest. I’ll forgive Kathrin Hutson for the cliffhanger ending if she hurries up with the next book.
The fourth installment of the Accessory to Magic series picks up where Book 3 left off. As usual, Jessica finds herself tossed between frying pan and fire. There's always a lot going on with the portal, her clientele, and now, her reintegrated powers on top of everything else.
This series has really hit its stride. The pacing is excellent, as is the world-building. Where the series continues to shine is with the character development. We continue to learn more about Jessica and her past, as well as some of the other major players.
My sense is that this installment really is the fulcrum - I don't think things will be the same for Jessica going forward!
This book is full of chaos, between Leandras lies and manipulations and trying to obtain the artifacts Jessica doesn’t know where to turn or who to believe. Leandras takes Jessica to the Otherworld and chaos happens. There is so much going on in this story, you find out what happened to Jessica when she was younger. You also get more of Leandras story. My favourite character is the bank, he is snarky and funny. To bad he could not go with them through the gateway. Hopefully he is in the next book again. I would recommend this book and series to all.

As Jessica and Leandras prepare to enter the Gateway, a dream gets Jessica spotted by the Brukii that wants to steal her magic. Leandras prepares a concoction that will allow Jessica to sleep without dreaming for the last two nights before she opens the Gateway. Leandras also takes Jessica to several different places so he can collect the artifacts he hid. There is plenty of magical action plus Jessica and Leandras are circling each other in the romance department. The story ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

Jessica and the bank are coming to turms with the gateway and what the banks true purpose is. Of course the gaurdian needs help from the infuriating fae who not just frusturates her but makes her want him. With all her feelings jumbled up jessica finds herself closer then ever to open the gateway. With all her magic bback inside her and claiming the gateway she slowly relizes even though she doesnt trust the fae she must in order to save the world. Follow jessica as she adventures further into the gateway to see if they will successfully save the two worlds.
We are at the fourth book in this series, and it really is going strong. Poor Jessica is still trying to figure out what comes next after the events of the previous book. I love how we are getting sneak peeks into Jessica’s past, and how her past keeps haunting her. And, finally, in this one, we get to visit…well, you’ll see. Jessica still doesn’t know whether to trust Leandras, and that is keeping me from completely, totally loving this series: make up your mind! LOL! This is a well-written, interesting series, and I am looking forward to the next. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This book picks up where the last left off. Jessica and Leandras are back at the bank and making plans to go to the other side of the gateway. The rune mark he put on her neck has become bothersome though. She keeps losing time. At least two hours at a time. Truths come out while waiting for a spell to grow and open the gate. Jessica is attacked and he has to save and protect her. The tension between them just keeps getting bigger. I cannot wait to read the next in series.

Jessica again will have many challenges to face, and she will question if she can trust Leandras, for he has kept secrets. What affects will the rune have? Can they cross over? I love Jessica, she is very determine and tries to do what's right, and I loved all the twists and turns of this tale, and the characters and the bank and it's pointed comments (got to love the bank). I loved this installment of this intriguing series, and I look forward to the next one.

After a little spell work and mayhem Jessica and Leandras go through the vault to the other side. Leandras is still hiding his ultimate goal and Jessica has to leave the bank entity behind. Much to Jessica’s surprise she misses the pain in the a** dialog but she probably won’t fess up to that. There are so many new characters to meet and magic to see working in this story. Keep in mind nothing is as it seems. I recommend this read.

Jessica and Leandras prepare their journey to open the Gateway. Once it's open their adventure into the paranormal world is less than exciting. They are faced with dangerous animalistic creatures and faes putting their lives in danger. I love this paranormal series! In my opinion it takes a unique type of talent to write these fabulous stories! Thank you Booksprout and the author for a digital copy. Read and reviewed voluntarily and the opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Kathrin has written the next enjoyable instalment in her "Accessory to Magic" series, and just like the first three has revealed added complexities in the characters of Jessica and Leandras, along with details of their earlier lives that have brought together the Guardian and the Laen'aroth at the Time of the Gateway. Now I have to get the final book to see how all the threads can be tied off!

I love this series, especially the interactions among the various residents of the bank, but this was my least favorite installment. Too much talk, not enough show for me. I also felt unsure about some of Jessica’s reactions to Leandras’ plots - they just seemed really scattered to me. That being said, I do love the characters and the storyline and look forward to the next book eagerly. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
I loved this series and each book gets better. This time around more secrets/information is revealed along with Jessica and Leandras still having to deal with each other. Although they make me laugh a lot. Jessica is running at full power so that adds to things too. Just a great story that kept me entertained, laughing, groaning and glued to the end. So hard to put down.
Jessica and finally get some answers but there is still more questions. Trust is still an issue and strange happenings is still afoot, but I’m loving the tone and direction of this series and can’t wait for the next installment.

Well written and enjoyable continuation of the story as Jessica crosses the veil with Leandras. Just how much the deceitful fae can be trusted is something she wisely learns to doubt. Jessica is up to her neck in trouble and her sentient bank is a world away from being able to help her.

So many things continue to happen to Hessica, mostly due to Leandras and his partial truths and “help”. I’m so excited for the next book and I really really wish Jessica had let Leandras finish what he was about to say towards the end. I was on the edge of my seat, hoping, and then she told him to wait....

She has her full powers back and the gate is opened. He offers to help her but can she trust him. She is still missing part of her memories and now someone in the past wants her dead. What is going to happen next? Can she survive it all? See how her life goes

Overall premise is really good but I had trouble connecting to the MC and didn't feel she was relatable. I do believe part of the problem is o dis nit start at the beginning of the series so it felt disjointed to me. I will go back and reread from the beginning I'm sure with more background I would find the story-line rather interesting and connect with the characters better.
The Poisoned Veil by Kathrin Hutson is a fantastic story to read. This is book number four out of five in this fantastic series that I am so hooked on and can not wait to read the rest. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Allow two days for this PG fourth book in the five-book series set mostly at Winthrop & Dirledge Security Banking in Golden, near Lakewood, Colorado. It sort of works as a stand-alone, but I would advise reading the series in order to avoid spoilers.
