Interesting read on the early trines of Britain. Very detail oriented in their way of life and fighting. Love the first hand look of their “doctor” and leader’s Aunt.
🧙🏽♀️700BC, Britain. After Blydh's passing Tallack became the individual chieftain of Dumnoni and with that, all hells broke down. Anarchy reigns as the Alchemists Clan that control the tin mines and the Hunter Clan that double the size of Sea warrior Clan revolted, threatening his position within the tribe. Amidst this wildfires ravage the moors, settlers are starving and homeless and Meliora felt helpless as Tallack had stopped taking her wise advice and began to depend on fickle and ambitious youngsters who had their own sly agendas in ruling the tribe. If Tallack couldn’t bring the Clans back under the control of his Chieftaincy, there was a strong possibility that his family would cease to rule over Dumnonii lands. Can they end the siege and retake control over the tin mines or will a vengeful leader prevail and slaughter Mel's entire family?
🧙🏽♀️The book - 5th in the Tribes of Britain series - set during the Late Bronze Age follows the adventures of Meliora, the wise healer of the Dumnonii tribe through her own 1st person POV. In this book Dumnoniis had to break the siege of the Alchemists Clan to regain control over the tin mines and in this endeavor, the physical terrain and fire played a significant role. So expect to read surprise ambushes, brutal skirmishes, deadly battles, and lots of death.
🧙🏽♀️Every time Sam amazed me with something new her writing. In this book, she had incorporated the natural calamity of wildfire and its consequences - starvation, pilferage, homelessness, revolt, and death in the plot. Like the previous books, the level of thrill, suspense, and tension remains high, and the narrative is enthralling. Initially, the pacing felt a little slow, but soon it picks up its speed, and the last 30-40% just blown away with all the actions, deaths, and surprises.
🧙🏽♀️With each book, the characters are developing and forming new relationships. I liked how after all the personal losses Tallack came out as a worthy leader in the end and lived up to his name, the Fearless. Meliora remains by his side and served him and the tribe with her healing skills. I just loved the bonding that she shared with Renowden. Meanwhile, Kenver, the leader of the Alchemy Clan proved to be a formidable foe, although he had very limited scenes in the book and priestess Endelyn surprises me with her ulterior motive.
🧙🏽♀️The ending had a satisfactory conclusion with a last-minute twist which had the effect of history repeating itself. You have to read the series to know what I'm talking about. As of now, it was the final book in this series but there is enough scope for at least one more book, so fingers crossed.
Overall, Pagan Siege is a wonderful read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. If you like historical fiction set in ancient times with strong female characters then do pick up this series. HIGHLY recommended.
