"These my mountains, this my land," by Leroy Sossamon is a lifetime collection of poetry by Sossamon, a writer who had a great love of the Smokies and of Grandfather Mountain, among other things. I knew almost right away that I would not love his poetry, much of which strives too much for the rhyming word or the clever turn of phrase. There were occasional gems, and he has a fellow admirer of Bryson City, Deep Creek and the Smokies in me, which goes a long way in making his writings more appealing.

I found this book and other local literary treasures in the Marianna Black Friends of the Library Bookstore in downtown Bryson City. The book caught my eye because of the cover and several pages in the front that featured quotes from his poems coupled with photographs taken by Hugh Morton, former owner of Grandfather Mountain.
