He’ll Never See It Coming…

I never thought I’d get revenge on Roman Turgenev. He was a Bratva prince, I was a nobody. So I don’t know why he turned his gorgeous green eyes on me, and decided to spend every single day of high school torturing me.

Now he’s the head of the Paris Mafia, more powerful than ever. To me, he’s the same arrogant bully I used to know. I don’t care if he’s trying to be nice to me. It’s only because he needs my help...

And I am going to help him. Or at least, I’ll pretend for a while...

I’ll get close to him.
I’ll learn all his secrets.
And then I’ll destroy him...

Well, who would’ve thought. I actually enjoyed a bully romance.

I was convinced that bully romances and stupidity go under the same umbrella. Because why should a romance develop in that type of a circumstance?

But turns out, my assumptions were the ones that were stupid.

I think this is on the lighter side of a bully romance, but nonetheless, I had a good time.

The Underworld series have been too much fun so far. They’re more grittier, more mafia. The pacing, the character arcs, the plot. All great. I can’t fault them.

I enjoyed this book. It’s the first book I have read by this author and it won’t be my last.
I found Mia strong even with my strong pet peeve “betraying body” trope. I’m so glad she wasn’t the type of female to chase after a guy just because she couldn’t control her hormones! Roman was a jerk and not as alpha as I normally prefer but not a beta which was good. This was not as dark as I thought it would be but still a good read.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Pretty good overall, but some parts fell a bit flat for me. I didn't really see the chemistry between the couple at the start, but I liked Mila and Roman more once they admitted their love.

This book felt a bit weird since Roman is popular and hangs out with the rich and famous and everyone knew his family is mafia. Felt a bit off lol since I thought mafia business was supposed to be secretive?? 😂

And I still need to read more bully romances to see if I'm into this trope.

The blurb reel me in and I wanted to like this. I really really wanted to like this due to the whole novel being based off of my favorite enemies to lovers trope and of course fan favorite theme, mafia romance. But it failed to meet my expectations

First things first, maybe it was just me but the dialogue didn't seem quite natural and this so-called 'chemistry and connection' between Romon and Mila was pretty much non-existent in my book. I didn't see it nor could I imagine them ever being together in a relationship despite the enemies to lovers aspect. In addition, the romance was choppy, lackluster and I felt like the plot was rushed.

Overall it would have been a better read if the novel was edited a bit more to work/improve kinks, characters were given some depth, and if the leads were better suited for one another. I will say that there is definitely some lingering potential there and I will definitely keep an eye out for this author's future releases.

This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.

I had such high expectations of Roman as this is a bully romance (and I do love a good bully romance) and I had heard that this one was a really great bully romance, and while there were some aspects of the story that I really enjoyed, there was also a side to this story that I wasn’t a fan of. But in this book we get the sister of the previous book “Snow” and I actually didn’t realize it until a few chapters in and I was really delighted. I really was hoping that we would get her story and I am glad that we received that from this author. This story features Roman-who is a France mafia prince and our heroine who is Mila. They meet at high school and they end up hating each other even though there is this attraction that neither of them wants to admit to. Then we skip a few years ahead, and they run into each other again, Mila is an aspiring journalist and working a piece against Roman, and Roman’s father has been killed and has now become the head of the Paris mafia. There is still this animosity but at the same time both have them have matured and grown and they try to work past their issues and find some common ground but its not easy and they have to work through their past to get to their future….

The bottom line is that we never fall for the person we’re supposed to.

This was quite an enjoyable read, I really liked the angst at times (at other times it just was wearing on me and maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for it is a likely issue) but I really enjoyed both of these characters. I don’t normally like journalist heroines but I feel like Sophie Lark handled her character so well. Then we have some angst smexyness and yes there is what is called “hate fucking” and its actually done very well, I didn’t like however that they go back and forth so much, I just wanted them to just settle down and decide if they hated each other or loved each other, haha It was quite a fun dynamic though and I really liked how both are them are warring with the past and trying to work together. I really enjoyed the growth that we see in Mila as a journalist and what she does, in the end, was perfection for me. I did love the sweet romantic moments that we see between Roman and Mila as they are icing on the cake. I did have high expectations of this one and it just didn’t meet them, but it’s a solid addition to the series, and eager to continue with it.

Sophie Lark knocked it out of the park with this one. The story kept my interest from beginning to end. I read this book in only a couple of hours. I couldn't put it down!

This book is about Mila (Sasha's sister from book 2, Snow) and Roman. Mila and Roman met in high school. He was a jerk and used to bully her. They meet 5 years after all grown up. Mila is a journalist and Roman is boss of the Paris Bratva. He along with his sister, Violet, and brother-in-law, Anton, are trying to go legitimate and clean up the family business. This involves Vivre, a huge casino hotel they are building.

Mila is in Paris working for a newspaper. She is commissioned to write an article on the new casino and get some dirt on Roman. Their paths cross and Roman is still so rude to her. He got on my nerves at first but later he is so whipped for her. Mila has him wrapped around her finger. Their chemistry and banter was sooo good. Mila was no doormat. I also felt this was one of the most believable male POV I've read.

We got mentions of Snow and Sasha. Anton and Violet are prominent in this book too (they have their own book.) In this book they are already married and expecting a daughter. I can't wait to see their story, how they met and how they end up together. They are such a cute couple.

Liked this one a lot. It was a nice twist to see a high school bully situation a few years out. Of course it makes for great hate fucking and makes it even sweeter when they start to fall.

I love how Sophie Lark sets up antagonists! The quick but effective backstory for Roman/Mila was great. I'm not a big fan of bully romances but I would have loved to see more of Mila antagonizing Roman. To me, it was a little too quick from re-meeting and being annoyed with one another > infatuation > "love". I wanted her to hold out more! Maybe I just hate an obnoxious bully.

This book was a total surprise for me, I didn’t expect to like it this much. I had some smaller issues with the first two books in this series and I’m normally not a huge fan of bully romance, so I assumed that this book wouldn’t be my favorite.

And then Roman and Mila came along, and I fell in love with both of them as characters, their history and their love story. The book is set in Paris, and I loved that, it’s a beautiful city I’ve visited a few times now and it just clicked with me.

The writing was good, and I liked the conflict in this book. Mila didn’t compromise her values for anyone, neither Roman nor her boss. She was clever and strong, and I enjoyed reading her POV.

Over all this was the best book from this series for me.

I know this series is all vibes and no brain, but it still wasn’t enough.

The switch from bullies to lovers was too fast. Everything was very surface level. I didn’t see the connection between them. They fell in love within a week… The end was also very… meh. And he wants her to write a book about Bratva?? Wouldn’t this put her in danger? 😂

Almost forgot: that scene in which he is singing with his sister and then mila listens and then like writes a part in their song? Idk why but that was cringe af. Like it seemed this scene was only added so we would get a wholesome found family type of moment but in my opinion it didn’t work at all lol also can’t imagine a mafia man just playing piano and singing I’m sorry 😭

Where do I begin? Normally, when I start a mafia romance, I throw my feminism out the window. But this dude made me pick it up and throw it in his face repeatedly.

I adore Sophia and her writing style, which is always easy to read and elaborates throughout the story, but this book felt like it was plucked from a wattpad written by a 15-year-old after a volleyball game. It was so repetitive and implied so many "quirky" words that I cringed throughout the entire book. I wasn't expecting this book to be great, but to be decent enough to get through. For example, I really enjoyed "Snow" and "Ivan" in this series; yeah, they were small and lacked more character chemistry, but I wasn't putting too much pressure on them; they were designed to be small and sum up some significant people that will be depicted later. Maybe a part of it being the final book in the series played itself, just everything felt so cliché at some point.

Mila was so bland to the point that I had to look up her name after three hours after finishing. Nothing about her story made me want to learn more about her character, no sympathy, nothing. I was only interested in her family history because of her sister from the second book (Snow), but even then she made me feel ugh, like she’s an adult but let her mom (whole different story) depict what to wear and send her to a date she didn’t wanted to go. (like stand up for yourself?) She loves journalism and has a fiery temper... okay, and? I couldn't connect with her in any way; she's just a stereotypical blond character.

Don't get me wrong: I adore possessive, controlling men, particularly in 'dark' mafia romances. For example, I adored Ronan from "Darkest Temptation," and despite the fact that he committed far worse things than this guy, I still prefer him. Roman is a poorly written character who is immature. Throughout the novel, he made me want to hit him and humiliate him; there was no character development, and I don't believe in his love for the main heroine; he seemed to enjoy controlling something he couldn't. That's the only dual-pov book in which I genuinely wanted to skip his perspective. So brash, arrogant, and childish, and god just letting you guys know those are the men you should avoid at all cost.

The characters' bond was heartbreaking, because I don’t think there was any. I'm sure they wouldn't last a year together; his mindset is so possessive he believes everyone owes him something simply because of his father, and I was hoping for at least more than one interaction between them in high school. Is it even appropriate to call it a bully romance? It's not bullying if he spilled hot coco on her and made her cry (while also removing some of her friends). Punk 57, in my opinion, performed a better job, and believe me when I say the book is not among my favorites. And why was it such a huge deal for him to ruin her dress (that wasn't even hers) and send her a message with an apology and a new dress? She was so impressed with some human decency from his side, made me wanna dnf it right then. She is just accepting bare minimum.

Spice… Simply put, no. I didn't feel any chemistry with the way he spoke to her, and their first encounter was him being jealous and r**ng her in a dark corner at church... seriously? Most people will argue it wasn't r*p, but I believe it was; he didn't ask her permission, and the fact that "her body reacted and leaned in, in the process" isn't enough of a reason; she was regretting it mentally every time. The fact that she never mentioned his physique in the process made me think she wasn't really attractive to him after all.

I'll continue the series because I trust this author; everything was just just my honest opinion, which I believe I have the right to express; I'm glad it was enjoyable for those who read it. But it was truly not for me.

"Bookshelves are like black holes that inexorably suck me in."

*4.5 stars*

Mila and Roman's story is a bit of a bully romance set in the backdrop of the Paris mafia. These two come across each other later in life after knowing one another from school, and find themselves drawn together. I liked this take on the bully trope because he wasn't actively bullying her in the present, but redeeming himself for his bad behavior as a teenager.

Listen. This was my 12th Sophie Lark book this summer. I’ve loved all the books in some way or another. And I have favorite boyfriends.

Roman has taken the top spot for me. He was lost in the sauce for Mila. Even when he hated her.

And the church scene? It literally had me saying “…oh…”. I love a good enemies to lovers when it all boils over. 🥵

These two have a thing for walls. And I’m okay with that.

I loved these two separately and together. And to read at the end I get to see glimpses of them in my continuation of Kingmakers?! Life is good.

At first, I thought it had only “Неистовый зверь, мой повелитель” vibes, but turned out it DID have “Рома-Рома-Роман” vibes as well! In fact, I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this bully romance. It was not truly focused on bullying, but the relationship between the main characters were strained at best. The way their attraction played out, first based on lust, which later on turned out to be mutual care and understanding... I am content. The only missed opportunity seems to be how she always calls him Roman, and never Roma nor Romchik.

This is my least favorite of this series so far. The bully aspect? Brilliant. Get it in my life. Be mean, make her cry! But also I need ya to not just transition directly from hate to lust cause that makes no sense to me and I was disappointed in the way this book just tries to make me believe all this anger was pent up sexual attraction cause no, friend, no.

Ooh this book sucked me in! The chemistry between Mila and Roman was so palpable and every time they touched you could feel it exploding. Mila is a sweet girl, she's trying to pursue her dream of journalism and is dedicated to her work, even when it means she has to work with her high school bully. She's smart, witty, and the one girl who never bowed down to Roman. Seeing how infatuated he was with her was cute, even if he's terrible at expressing himself.

The story was engaging and more than just the romance. There are dark parts and a lot of corruption happening behind the scenes. The climax at the end of the book was intense and I loved it! This has great pacing and a steamy romance. I'll definitely be checking out the other books in the series!

“She’s fought me, argued with me, insulted me, infuriated me. Most of all, she’s invaded my body like a virus. ”

this was good but kinda slow-paced? i love roman and mila together, but i felt like something was missing because i kept thinking that there would be more. i hated the mom the most in this book. really wanted to punch her. i'm not even a violent person.

its a good book and i love the world, its just very average compared to the previous two. BUT i love love love the way roman started treating her and wanted to be this big guy for her. ugh honestly fml i need a possessive man in my life.

I love this author. Her mafia romance often on the sweeter side. Sadly, this one is a miss for me.

For someone who was bullied throughout her entire school year, she was unbelievably forgiving. The betraying-body symptom is such a huge turn off for me. The hero is a bully and a jerk who not only verbally bullied the heroine, isolated her from her friend, also physically pushed her and dumped the hot drink on her to humiliate her because “he wanted her attention”!

For once, I have to dnf this author’s book. She can do better.

Traditionally, starting a new series right in the middle 🙃

This book? Sigh... 😩 It could have been much better.

Don't be discouraged by the "bully" trope, there is barely any real bullying. It's true that Roman didn't treat Mila nice at school, but she gave as good as she got.

As for the present part, I was sort of dissappointed. Didn't feel any chemistry and all was because of the rushed first sex. Sophie's books aren't slow-burn, and that's fine, but sometimes a few more pages of the prolonged mutual attraction before the act, does the trick. As a result, we got a lot of hate sex and Roman's POV was confusing - one minute he wants to kiss her, then spank her (so far so good 😆), but then the chapter finishes by him swearing he won't be chasing her, only to run to her like a lost puppy in the next one. Why the harsh promises, man?! 🤨

I did like it for the most part, the ending saved it for me as usual.

3⭐️ literally read this in one sitting in a couple of hours, super fast faced!! the couple felt a little rushed at times and i definitely preferred the other books in the series. Since I am following Sophie’s reading order for Kingmakers and this Underworld series, I had to read this before going on to Dom and the final book in The Kingmakers (The Savage)! I still recommend reading if you are reading the Underworld and Kingmakers series by Sophie!
