Juliette Douglas is Kentucky's Wild West Tale-Spinner. Her fast-paced hard hitting stories about strong, bold and brassy women in the old west are a winning combination for her readers. Men, women and teens alike enjoy traveling back in time eating dust, shivering in the cold, sitting around a campfire sipping coffee telling tales or riding the trail with her characters. She paints a vivid palette of landscape, hard times, true friends, quirky characters and happy endings.
Women depicted in western movies and novels in its heyday usually had the females cast as secondary characters. Ms. Douglas decided to change that, and so she has with her popular Freckled Venom Series, Perfume Powder & Lead: Holy Sisters and several new novels, Mistletoe & Horseshoes, Miss Birgit’s Dilemma and The Littlest Cowboy.
Juliette is a Kentuckian and female, not that there's anything wrong with that, but generally speaking that doesn't lend itself to having the capability of writing a gritty, informative mountain man book . . . but she has. The Fighting Men of Sinking Springs is an excellent read . . . it held my interest from the beginning to the end. Her description of the Rocky Mountains was accurate, her characters were nicely fleshed out, and the plot was sound. Currently the market is being flooded with mountain man books, some are good, some are bad, and some are mediocre . . . Juliette's is good. You need to get yourself a copy of The Fighting Men of Sinking Springs, you won't regret it.
I've read quite a few of Ms Douglas's books, and I thoroughly enjoy them. This one, for me, was unexpected and delightful. Each character was unique in personality, with their own charm. I was able to visualize them, because of her description. From Packy and his mule, to Micah, with his gentle giant size but strong personality. Along side James and Johan, they are tasked with not only saving the lives of the pioneers in the wagon train, but teaching them the art of survival in a new and often dangerous journey to their new lives. Brought to life through her writing, you will surely enjoy riding along with them all as they travel across the wilderness.
I absolutely loved this! I was Blessed enough to have known my great grandmother & her husband, both pioneers. He had been a U S Marshal. I remember my grandmother Sarah Smith would set with me and tell me tales. Those have always been good times for me. This book put me right back there. It’s so well written I could picture it in my mind. Those were hard and dangerous times. Reading this was like having my own Time machine. A big thank you to the author.
Loved the book, it is everything I expected it to be when a book is written by author Juliette Douglas. I enjoyed the terrific storyline and the way this author builds each scene around what is happening, and I'm there living in the moment. The characters were well thought out, especially James, Packy, Micah, Johan. I enjoyed their friendly banter back and forth and I'm looking forward to reading more of these wonderful characters named The Fighting Men Of Sinking Springs in the next book. I enjoyed the ride, Marcia! JudyE
