Bad Moon Academy #1

Dead Wolf Walking

Rate this book
One bite changed my life.

I was living life to the fullest when a wolf attacked.

Now I’ve been ripped from my home and shipped off to Bad Moon Academy, a place for changed wolves. Or so I’m told.

There’s something sinister lurking within the confines of the academy, and I’m starting to think I was brought here as a sacrifice.

This is a dark academy reverse harem with dangerously possessive shifters.

This is the first in a new adult paranormal why choose romance. Raven is bitten by a wolf shifter, and shortly afterward she’s whisked away to Bad Moon Academy, a place where newly changed shifters are taken to learn about the paranormal world before being integrated into a pack. But something’s off about the academy.
In this book, we get the point of view of Raven, but also those from her love interests. It’s clear that they’re keeping secrets, and not all is explained in the first book. There’s a cliffhanger, and I was left pretty darn confused by some of those twists at the very end!
The book has a lot of suspense, and there’s a bit of angst to characters, particularly Raven and her love interest, Draco. There’s a little bit of steam, but this is a slow burn romance, so not much lovin’ happens in the first book.
I’m definitely intrigued by the mystery plot lines in this story, and I can’t wait to dive into the second book!
Trigger warnings: suicide and substance abuse - as noted by the author in the beginning of the book.

Raven has the gift of sight, too bad she can’t see the huge scary wolf about to attack her in the woods. As a recovering alcoholic, she’s trying to be better, but her soul longs for something more.

Fast forward to her being bitten by a werewolf and held within the confines of the Bad Moon Academy (yes, you heard me, Bad Moon, lol), to acclimatize to life as a werewolf shifter.

Now the story wouldn’t be complete without some twists which come in the form of our main character, Raven, having the Sight and being a rare form of wolf called Luna.

Besides having a pretty cool name she also gets to choose a harem of five, I know, only five ??? This is where things get interesting because each potential candidate of the Harem is unique but at the same time has this synergistic balance which Raven desperately needs in her life.

There’s Draco, but not like Malfoy who is a freak, professor Carter who is innocent and sweet, Everett the dominant alpha, and some surprising inclusions who may or may not be wolf (I can't ruin everything now can I?)

As if the girl getting bitten wasn’t enough, her inner wolf is the QUEEN of sass. The juxtaposition between Raven and her inner wolf is pure comedic gold. Raven is a follower but her wolf is pure alpha bisch.

Her inner wolf is in constant heat and her main goal, besides annoying Raven, is to collect men like candies (I too do this in my spare time).

Two things I’ve learned about my wolf—she loves food and is obsessed with finding me a harem.

The blurb says this is a Reverse Harem, but I haven’t seen anyone doing the deed which is equal parts frustrating and delicious because I love a good slow burn.

The book basically ends in a cliffhanger, urgh, FML, but I am pretty excited to read on to see how our girl Raven progresses with her freedom from Bad Moon Academy and the harem.

Thank you to the author and Xpresso Tours for providing me with an arc.

Dead Wolf Walking is one of those books that had me crafting all sorts of theories in my head as I read and telling multiple friends vague parts of those theories because I needed to tell someone but not spoil it for them. I couldn't put this book down, I just had to keep reading to see what was happening at the academy and how Raven was going to deal with everything. This is a multi-POV book, which both helps and makes the twists twistier. I also think the pacing was well done to keep the tension going. This is listed as a dark book and there are definitely some dark themes here, but I want to add that I'm not a dark reader personally and I had no issues with this read.

Raven is the type of FMC that I truly enjoy reading about, she's experienced trauma and has come out strong and determined, even when she's unsure and vulnerable. She's a fighter through and through. Now sometimes I did want her to fight the guys at the academy a little less, because I'm on board with her wolf, what we've seen of the ones I like, she can go ahead and claim them right now and I'd be happy. Raven's learning a new world, along with whatever else is happening though, so it's understandable that she'd be cautious. Plus, her background also supports her character's choices. Raven is such a richly drawn character that Ms. Miles did an amazing job building.

Raven's wolf by the way, is amazing. I really enjoyed how the balance works between wolf and human in this world. I'm also a big fan of the love interests so far. Even though this is a slow burn, we do get hints of steaminess in this first book, which were well-written, and loads of tension. Each guy has a distinct personality and you get a good feeling of how each would work with Raven and their group as a whole. You really get the sense as a reader that all of the guys want to protect Raven, even if they may not be able to.

As for the twists and turns, so many theories like I said. Just so many. There's a lot going on at Bad Moon Academy and we're just scratching the surface of what's got to be hidden under there. We do get some pieces to the puzzle and hints. The book ends on a big cliffhanger that also adds another element to the puzzle I think. Book 2 is up for pre-order as I'm typing this and Ms. Miles assured us in a note after that cliffhanger that book 2 will share more info. I'll be over here, possibly with a wall covered in photos and string, waiting.

Weird pacing

Raven works hard to block bad memories. Her mom did the one thing she told Raven not to, and then left her for good. Her Aunt Lou took her in and helped her. But the ghosts won't hush. Literally. Then a nighttime run leaves her with a wolf bite that lands her in a mysterious school with more ghosts, hungry shadows that eat students, trapped in a ward that can kill, and with a new wolf in her head that is very much hung up on acquiring a harem. It's a lot to take in.

Spoilers ahead.
It's like season 2 of AHS. There's too much going on to make sense of any 1 thing.
*The mystery of her abilities.
*The zeta biting her on purpose.
*Bea
*Morg
*Adler being supposedly low ranking fae but powerful and well connected...and in the mortal realm tending bar.
*The ghost that won't talk or show himself
*How do ghosts form? How come some can speak but not others?
*Her mom still visiting
*The classes that don't seem to explain anything
*Teachers barely older than the students
*The ward that could kill instead of just deter
*The spell that makes them unable to explain anything
*The food left out at night
*The mystery of the ballroom
*Ms Fig
*The alpha no one has seen but determines all their fates
*Why the fae can't liberate her from the school when their magic is supposed to be stronger than shifter magic
*Why shifter magic is mentioned but she doesn't try to see if she's acquired new abilities
*Why she keeps discovering libraries but doesn't research the school or shifter abilities, especially lunas
*Why her wolf is more concerned about picking mates instead of keeping her human half alive
*Whatever this plan is that involved turning Raven and making her do something they can't inform her about
*Why a Luna is one time called the female version of an alpha and then another time something different
*Why does a Luna specifically need 5 mates?

It's just a jumble, honestly. It's a lot of frantic pace followed by long patches of do nothing. Thrust into such a situation, she is awfully complacent. She talks about leaving but does nothing to push it along. She seems content to let everyone else shove her about on the chess board or attempt to rescue her like a damsel in distress. She may be learning about witches and vampires and fae, about shifters, but we aren't learning about them with her. There is next to no world building. The characters don't develop. The plot is a toddler's idea of a snack bowl with everything in the cabinet thrown in but it's so busy you can't focus. It's just a sugar high that crashes leaving you unfulfilled. I don't know any other way to describe it.

Okay... NGL I have a weird wolf prejudice. (I blame LKH, honestly.)

THAT SAID...

I really enjoyed this book!

The way Raven interacts with her wolf is amazing. Her snarky, yet damaged vibe is endearing and believable. The mistrust of the wolf and learning to co-exist inside slowly is so much more what I imagine having another conscious being in your head suddenly is like.

Mystery and riddles surrounding the academy and its provenance are well written, and the ending took me by surprise. (Not easy to do, TBH.)

The guys are fun and developed, and the air of something ‘other’ was a delicious tension builder.

It’s different than a lot of academy and a lot of wolf tropes. I like the uniqueness.

I am DEFINITELY excited for the next book.

Ok so I sat down to read this book this morning and while at first it was a tad slow, once I got into it I couldn’t stop! Thankfully I only have to wait a month for the next book cause man that ending! I loved it!! Raven is an awesome FMC, and I’m not much for academy books but this doesn’t really read like most. No bullying or anything really either. It is I think really unique and very original. I really enjoyed it and am excited for more.

Confused and annoyed

Thats how this book leaves you. Low level steam, it's just. I dunno. Nothing really happens. Like, there a plot, but I had to stop myself from skipping ahead through pages. Like, you figure out one chick is creepy and probably bad. You can guess maybe everybody is dead or dying because the name of the book. I mean, parts were good? I dunno. Read at your own risk to your time.

Couldn't even finish it. I got 20% in and gave up. Raven is a drunk trying to get her life together which didn't bother me. But she goes on a run near her house and is attacked by a wolf and becomes a shifter. Then shes abducted and forced into some kind of prison academy. She recognizes who turned her and is falling for the guy literally in the 1st quarter of the book. No thanks. If you want to portray a strong female character don't make her into a wimp to the guy that put her in this mess in the 1st place. Uuugh. Literally could have gone with anyone on her damn harem but that draco guy made me stop reading the book.

Ever since Rory Miles announced that this series was coming, I've been impatiently waiting until the arc would land in my mailbox. I mean, I loved her vampires and they were totally my thing, but this werewolf story with a bit of mystery just sounded TOO good. So I was really happy when the e-mail eventually came and I could get started. (By the way: Look at the cover? How beautiful is this cover then?)

This book absolutely didn't disappoint. The moment I started reading it was almost impossible to stop and that's partly because Miles has such a nice and flowing writing style. It's not hard to read, it never feels unnatural, all the emotions come across perfectly and the descriptions are not too lengthy, but detailed enough to paint a nice picture of how everything and everyone looks. Add an exciting plot and you have something quite addictive.

What I really loved about the plot is that it's really building up tension. We get more and more piece of the puzzle, but we don't get the pieces to make it click. It means that we're constantly reminded that something is going on, something beyond an academy for werewolves to learn to controle their inner wolves, and yet we don't get the answers too easily. Therefore I moved closer and closer to the edge of my seat while reading.

On top of that there are amazing characters to get to know. I especially loved our leading lady. She's skittish and not really reckless, but she's also curious, stubborn and determined. Therefore how she handle all these situations feels quite natural. She's surrounded by some amazing guys and also a few best girl friends. And although the book is too short to help us get to know everyone very well, we get to see enough of them to make them feel real.

I can't wait for the next book! I wanna know how it continues!

Not going to lie there are several plot holes and a bunch of question marks right of the "bite". The biggest one being how was she not more angry towards Draco and curious about the situation. She immediately took it in stride considering, there wasnt a period of time where she was fully against it. We barely get any information from her mates because of the ward but also just generally about them too. I dont know who this guys are except for their Wolf rank. And who the hell is Brayden? He was instantly presented as one of her five but we see him once during the Joan kidnapping and never again. I already forgot who he was.

I dont know Im tired and a little pissed off at the unfinished-like quality alot of these Reverse Harem books have. But considering my Stars for this one I still want to know what happened next so I guess I'll update in Book 2

This was a very interesting story. I was expecting a typical shifter story but this was totally different. Raven is bitten by a wolf and her whole life changes. She ends up at Bad moon Academy and nothing is as it seems. Between the sexy males and the ghosts she has more than she can handle. Great first book in this series

SO GOOD! This book was fantastic! The mystery and intrigue completely had me hook, line and sinker. Raven was one bada** heroine! I loved her strength, take-no-shit attitude, determination, and curiosity. Even more so, I LOVED her bond with Joan (her Wolf)!!! Joan was one sassy Wolf and I loved it! Hearing her inner monologue and their back and forth conversations was hilarious! There were moments that literally had me laughing my butt off!

Everett, Carter and Draco were very interesting characters. Each personality was so uniquely them. And I loved how they each had such a different connection/relationship with Raven. I genuinely cannot wait to see those relationship blossom even more as the story continues.

That end though...WHAT THE HECK! That ending totally through me for a loop and I was left wondering what the flip I just read! I’m left with so many questions that I need answers to and can’t wait to have.

This story was fantastic and Rory Miles did a wonderful job of creating such a thrilling, mysterious and sexy read that had me completely consumed from beginning to end.

what’s next!! need more !

Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly... morticia adams, wel that is a way to start a book!
When I started reading this I genuinely had no idea who were the bad guys and the good guys. And by the end honestly I still am not 100% sure but dang this book was a top notch read the characters are all perfect, and I mean in the way that I instantly feel connected to them as the reader, good or bad but connected non the less this story instantly sucked me in and kept me wanting more, definitely a major cliffhanger that killed me and also made me want to scream a little but will be worth it when I read the second book( coming in June it said ) but this was a great start to a unique and very interesting story and I am genuinely looking forward to the next book!!

Raven is forced to go to Bad Moon Academy after she gets bitten by a wolf shifter and turns into one. Here, she finds out more about herself and her wolf, Joan. She also meets some male shifters whom Joan think will be a good addiction to their harem and tries to convince Raven to seal the deal with them. However, there is something weird going on at the academy, and Raven is the key to solve the mystery.

I felt like the first half of the story was fast-paced, but in the second half the author got the time right to narrate Raven's story. The academy setting too does a good job in piquing the reader's curiosity.

I was kindly provided with an ARC by the author, but I'm leaving a voluntary and honest review.

Rory Miles is one of my “get book now, ask questions later” authors. As in, I don’t even bother reading the blurb before getting it. This book was no exception. Which means I went into this book knowing next to nothing, aside from what I could deduce from the title. Let me tell you, this book just reinforced that habit. Well built characters, plot twists that take your breath away, and a snarky, savage inner wolf, to match a snarky, independent, if not a little damaged, character, making them the perfect combination. The cliff hanger left me screaming internally, swiping back and forth trying to find more pages. I am patiently (maybe not so much) waiting for the next one now.

The only way I can describe this is: Hogwarts smashed with Haunting of Hill House. AND. I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT!

What a cool beginning to a new series! I really like how the FMC doesn't fall head over heels immediately with every guy she comes across, too. There's push and pull with each of the men and though they're willing to take things further, she's keeping them at a bit of a distance. The intrigue is spot on. Soooo many mysteries! Fae, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, and I love that her wolf has her own mind and opinions - it made the dialogue and conflicts that much more genuine.

Yay, Rory! I can't wait to see where this series takes me! ARROOOOO!!!!!!

Wow! Rory blew me away with this one. Just when I thought I figured something out I was left with more questions. I was hooked from the first page and I couldn’t put down. Raven is bitten by a wolf and has to attend Bad Moon Academy. Raven is so strong and spunky and I just loved the conversations she had with her wolf. So much intrigue, secrets, so many mysteries, the hot wolves (shew!), and that cliffhanger of an ending left me wanting for more. An incredible start to this series and I can’t wait for the next book.

A sassy FMC with her even sassier wolf Joan who I loved, she absolutely cracked me up! The guys are all different and one of which a complete an utter mystery which dang makes this book so intriguing! The plot just keeps on giving and I think this is just the beginning of something altogether spectacular.

Fantastic Story

This book is an amazing mix between shifter pack book and a supernatural academy book. The world building is so well done as well as the mystery of what is actually going on at the academy.

Raven and Joan are an amazing blend of woman and wolf and Raven being the strongest dynamic … well I did not expect it and absolutely loved it. The boys are interesting and well written.

That cliffhanger was crazy. Going right into book 2.

2.75 not my type of story stars.

This book reads like a psychological thriller. You know what I'm talking about. Mysteries on top of mysteries that are never truly solved, foggy mind f*** writing, dark overtones, secrets that can't be revealed, etc.
I personally hate psychological thrillers and had I not purchased this audiobook, it probably would have been a dnf for me.
So take my rating with a grain of salt and know that I am biased.

I wasn't sure what to expect. For me, it was a bit of a slow start. However, once Raven became in tune with her wolf, it was such a fun book. I totally loved Joan! I'm a bit picky when it comes to Academy books and this one was totally enjoyable. Can't wait to see what happens next!

DNF - quit at 71%
The flow is horrible with this book. It dragged along so slowly, it lost my interest too many times. So many things are going on (maybe too many to keep the story on track), with hardly any explanations to anything. A character is mentioned quite a bit by Draco (Brayden), but is never seen talking to or even visually by any of the other characters except for Draco, making me thing he was a ghost or something since ghosts are part of the story. But suddenly Brayden physically appears (actually in the flesh) talking to the other main characters that Raven is interacting with as possible her harem men. This is at the 71% point, So WTF!?! This whole story was just too confusing and felt more like a horror story or something than a reverse harem romance. I didn't feel any developing connections between her & her guys, or even any character development. Everyone is just stumbling around in the story with no direction. I wish I had quit sooner, I felt like I wasted a lot of time trying to get thru this.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
