Mazoku Matsumoto was constantly being pursued by men wanting to end his life, and by women who wanted to be in his life. Both genders pursued for the same reason, the wealth and power that he wielded. Raised to be the heir of his grandfather’s criminal empire, he wanted no part of that world. The fact that his position as head of their crime family meant constant danger for her, for Taki, sealed it for him. He wanted out. Taki felt the bond that she and Mazoku shared down to the marrow of her bones. He had been the only constant in her life. After years of hoping he would finally love her, as her heart secretly yearned for, Taki had to accept that she must forge a life without Mazoku in it. As Mazoku fought to protect her from the dangerous men determined to capture her to gain his compliance and suck him back into the criminal world, Taki struggled to not lose herself in Maz’s dominance.

The first romance novel I ever read was Cinderella! I devoured Disney’s version of romance until I was eleven, and then I discovered Mills & Boons. In those days kissing was the most explicit intimacy disclosed: the hero and heroine went to bed and came out the next day with smiles! I had no idea what happened, but I was intrigued. My mom had shelves and shelves of them. Over the long summer breaks, I barely left my bedroom! My busy parent had no idea what I was up to. I’ve always been fascinated with love stories. I started writing in college, but I never expected anyone would ever read my whimsical musings. LOL! Now years later, after husband and kids, and a solid career in finance I’ve started publishing those early ideas.

I write my stories so that every woman would be inspired to find the other half of themselves. With every story I tell, my Caribbean sisters are highlighted. Our culture is a melting pot of all ethnicities, where love has no color. We love who we love and make no apology for it. These stories are also infused with my love for sports and action thrillers. I’m an avid sports fan. Tennis, football, track and basketball are my favorites. I devour dramas and action movies. So it’s to be expected that my books have a healthy dose of adventure.

Writing romance novels has been a dream I never knew I had. It was born out of suddenly having a little extra time with the kids out of the house. I absolutely love this creative outlet.

Author’s Creed
I like women strong, and my men stronger!
I like my sex raunchy but meaningful!

This author is new to me.
I found the synopsis to be intriguing and the mixed races of the characters original - living in the Caribbean with it's acceptance of a melding pot of races, this was long overdue.

Strong characters and a very strong bond. Maz trusts no one like he does Taki. He found her, he named her, protected her and trained her to survive in the unlikely chance he was not around.

As close as Taki is to Maz, she does not see that his love has grown beyond that of a protector and mistakenly tries to force his hand. It is good that she does as Maz would have kept giving her more time - time she no longer wanted or needed. Although the world thinks they are siblings, there is not a drop of shared blood between them, unless it is kill or be killed.

They have both grown up in a harsh world, where only the strong survives, thrives and makes their own rules.

Yep, I am going to check out Mortier's titles backlist.

Enjoyed reading. Good to get glimpses of past characters. Always love to hear about Neo and Xavier. I felt Taki but at the same time I didnt. I'm always skeptical of the women. I want to relate to them, but it's a struggle. Looking forward to the next book.

protector to the end

Max was a young boy when he knew no one really wanted him. He was young when he knew fighting for what he wanted was his life. He was young when he found the one person in the world he would sacrifice everything for. He was young when he found his Taki. She was his everything. She was his world, his life, his to protect. Until she had to protect him.

I enjoyed this story so much. Max was a protector. He would do what was necessary to keep the one person in the world he valued. Along the way he did find friendships but nothing out weighed his connection to Taki.

For me D.M. Mortier gave me a full story with passion and Uber alpha male that had his alpha female. She was his equal.

Another HIT!

Maz and Taki, what a beautiful love story. I love how all the women in your novels are strong, fierce and beautiful. They are also the brains behind the missions for the guys. Maz is such a rebel, started off stone cold but ended up being a gentle loving giant. Beautiful.

Absolutely His

She is most definitely His, imagine an 8 years old rescuing a newborn baby...!? (no spoiler). Very touching, emotional scene...
Primal instinct is a page turner and will keep you at the edge of your seat with so much going on.
Thank you D. M. for the brief moment with Dom and Crew! 😋

An Amazing Book!!!!

Maz and Taki's story was an exceptional read. The way he took care of her from a baby even when he was still a child. They were created for each other. Lock in and read this book you will not regret it.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Good book

Very good read, with 2 people who were so in sync with each other, and I was still upset that Taki knowing Maz better than anyone couldn’t see his love for her in everything he did, regardless of what he didn’t say. He showed and demonstrated on the regular.

You are not missing one ingredient when it comes to the main characters, the emotion, the physical, the love, and the drama. This is a story you are not able to put down and pick up. You are going to want to read it to the end without stopping. Enjoy 😊

I thoroughly enjoyed this story through and through. The possessive love Of the hero and heroin was funny amazing frustrating and appealing all at the same time. I enjoyed the humor in the story humor of the story. I really enjoy this author...she's a great writer and knows how to attract her readers and keep them engaged. Looking forward to the next read.

Maz was an Alpha even as a kid!

Had EVERYBODY SHOOK. And then he became the ultimate ALPHA! I wondered briefly, what happened for Taki to be found the way she was, to end up becoming his ward? We never found out who/where she came from and what had become of her people! I also wondered, again briefly why Maz's mother showed up after all this time? Did she really think he would want to see her? As always, there was plenty of action going on, stubbornness of the main characters who FINALLY get on the same page and my all time favorite HEA. Oh and you know I LOVED the appearance of my favorite crew (Dom and company). Y'all know when they enter the scene its about to GO DOWN! Another you won't be disappointed in. Excellent read that is highly recommended!

Taki Needed, “I Love You”...

I did not understand why she could not see it as glaringly as he displayed it after all those years of being held on a pedestal though. Oh to be that young again.

I love this book!

I wanted this book not to end. I wanted it to have a book 2 but Ms. Mortier is so good that she answer all my questions without me asking them in their post. I am hook on her books. I am looking for more of her books to read. Now what did I love about the book was that Maz at eight years old decide that he was going to take care of a baby an no one was taken his baby away. I was mad at his parents for neither one show him love not even his grandfather who save him from the system. But his Taki love him no matter what he did and his body Guard And the bodyguards wife. I wanted to cry but could not because you got respect the man he became because of Taki ,he could have been Ruthless in the crime world but she kept him grounded. I look for more from this author.👑

IDK

Maz rescues Taki from a garbage can and claims her as his own. That’s all well and fine, but Taki would like to have a life of her own.

I’m not even sure where to begin with this one. Their relationship is a bit questionable, but Mortier doesn’t shy from it. Maz is definitely CONTROLLING, and these could could have benefitted from some time apart. However, considering how they grew up, I’m not surprised that Maz wouldn’t want that.

There wasn’t a ton of grammatical mistakes, but the author forgot Taki’s age a few times.

Would I recommend it? Not really. This was my first book by DM Mortier and, while I can’t say it was terrible, I also can’t say that it’s a universe I would want to return to. That being said, if you like A(H)MBW and obsessive boyfriends is your jam, then this one is at least worth your consideration.

Great story

There really isn’t anything of Ms. Mortier I don’t like. I was hesitant about reading this particular book, thinking I wouldn’t like it. I have to say that both Taki and Maz story is amazing and the storyline had me reading this book all night. However, I was not impressed with how Taki was so naive. How she could be so insecure about a person she knew as well as she knew herself, was just unbelievable. Her stubbornness and willingness to give up so often gave me whiplash and yeah made me a little angry at her games. Maz on the other hand was everything this story created for him, strong but broken, alpha male, but sensitive to his one true love, and a fierce protector but definitely overbearing.

Hot and Obsessive!

This story was such a pleasure to read. I enjoyed Maz because he was intense and in love. Taki was a formidable opponent for such a determined man. She didn't fully understand how he showed his love for her and she was always questioning his actions. They were a perfect match in the bedroom and the boardroom, their relationship however was full of misunderstandings. Taki was in love with Maz but she didn't recognize his love for her. As with all love stories , there are always problems. I enjoyed the action and bedroom scenes. I couldn't put it down.

My main problem in the book is that she made 3 characters with completely different roles have very similar distinct names
Dubaku, Deepak, and Daku. all contained the letters D and K .... I think as a best practice writers should not do that. It is very confusing for a reader when all the character names sound alike and they have a twist where they switch side. Who was the good guy who is now bad? Which one is which... nobady knows. even after finishing the novel I cant tell you which is which.

Other than that, solid story line.

MAZnificent!

Maz grew up tough! He was not wanted by his Japanese father or his Puerto Rican mother. At the age of eight years old, he saw a bundle thrown into a dumpster. He retrieved it, and to his surprise, it was a newborn baby girl. He refused to let his foster parents take her away from him, and when his paternal grandfather found him and tried to take him home, Maz refused to go without baby Taki. And so, the story begins...

How could I tell her that I wanted all her firsts to be with me?

Yasssss, this was so good. I love this book from the beginning to the end!!! Stop playing with Maz, he was a true ALPHA and didn’t play at all when it came to Taki!!!!, and she was the same way about him. What a love story, the passion, intrigue, their chemistry together ❤️‍🔥 I can’t wait to read the Andreini’s story and his friends 👏🏽👏🏽

Well

I did not like Taki! She was so immature and childish, if something wasn't going her way she would run away regardless of the danger that she was constantly in. She literally put herself in dangerous situations to get a reaction from Maz, because he wasn't acting the way about a certain situation. I could not wait for the book to end as I was over her and this volatile relationship!

Annoying immature female lead!

Annoying annoying annoying! So much dialogue wasted on her selfish temper tantrums! Also where is the discipline that her supposedly martial arts training would have had over her emotional self-interest. Especially having grown up the way that she did.

An annoying read!

Great read

I loved Maz and Taki the action and drama kept me engaged. As in precise as they were as partners they were completely out of sync when it came to communicating their feelings.

I love Maz’s protection. Great drama, love the action. There is nothing like the female being able to protect herself. Fierce!! I love their innate loyalty toward one another. Great read with awesome action!! Wish there was a book 2😩.
