Started this show on netflix last week, and I just loved it so much I had to pick up the manga! It’s so cute! I love Akko so much!

The manga does kind of skip out some things in my opinion, so maybe watch the 2017 anime first?

I finished two seasons of this anime on Netflix yesterday and had to check this manga out immediately.
I prefer the anime to be honest but this is also a cute, silly and lighthearted read.
I will never not love reading about magical schools and the power of friendship, love and positive thinking.
Akko is a little bit annoying but only because I am a 27 yeard old one quarter of a pessimist, one quarter of a skeptic, one quarter of a cynic and one final quarter of a child at heart enchanted by all things magical.
It is impossible not to love this beautiful story with great supporting characters.
A truly heartwarming tale of friendship and magic!

Let's be honest with one another for a moment: there's nothing quite like a magical girl! And in all the years and vast titles that populate the magical girl genre, I don't know if I've ever quite encountered anything like "Little Witch Academia".

Someone might despair this as nonsense, as the series feels heavily influenced by Harry Potter, and indeed I've seen that parallel drawn several times by now. (To be fair, Harry Potter parallels very strongly with "The Worst Witch", a television series that originally aired on BBC before Rowling began writing "Philosopher's Stone", and those ardent Potterheads ready to cry plagiarism against Trigger Studios for "ripping off" their precious Hogwarts should take into account that Rowling herself faced lawsuits for her work being far too similar to "The Worst Witch". So there's some food for thought: Luna Nova Academy for Witches isn't the first magical school in media we've seen, and it likely won't be the last either.)

But here's the critical thing that separates "Little Witch Academia" from both Harry Potter and other magical girl series in the magical girl genre: our protagonist Atsuko "Akko" Kagari can't do magic. Akko doesn't come from a witch family and cannot perform even the simplest of magical feats, but that's not going to stop her from attending Luna Nova Academy in England, for it is the alma mater of her witch idol, Shiny Chariot!

Now here is where I must make the obligatory Netflix plug and stress it: you should not start reading this manga if you have not watched the anime. There is a 20 minute short stand-alone episode and a short movie called "The Magic Parade" for "Little Witch Academia" that acted as promo animations to get a greenlight for the main series (neither of these is necessarily canon to the main series itself, but they're worth a watch) and then the main series itself, which is two seasons long. Please watch the main anime series before you start this manga.
Please watch the main anime series before you start this manga.
Please watch the main anime series before you start this manga.
The events in this manga are not exact to what is in the anime series episodes, and references events in those episodes. There is a story about the shooting star broom in the manga that references the anime episodes, but is not in the anime itself. There is a volleyball match that doesn't take place in the anime. Please, please, please, I am begging you, watch the anime before you start reading the manga. Otherwise, you will end up incredibly confused.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this first volume, and was pleasantly surprised by the additional new stories that were included. I suppose my only major complaint was that this volume feels very short and I wish we didn't have to wait for the release of the next one.

As a fan of the Little Witch Academia anime, I just had to read the manga adaptation!
Highly recommend checking out the anime or manga, its basically about an all girls magic school & the characters are all fantastic!
Its great for those who've never seen it b/c the first chapter sets it all up! I really enjoyed this first volume and while it definitely goes in a different direction than the anime/mini-movie, its still really great!

Can't wait to read the future volumes~

I loved the Netflix series of this book. This is actually based on the show but with some different stories. I enjoyed reading about familiar events as well as seeing side events I didn't see on the show. I absolutely love the distinct characters. The artwork and story were done really well!

I decided to reread this manga, after many years now.

It's been even longer since I saw the first season of the 'Little Witch Academia' anime (I should get around to rewatching the whole series), and the first volume of the manga is similarly magical, cute and funny. The characters are especially funny, memorable, and stand out as unique, daring and endearing individuals. Look at these witch girls: Akko Kagari is just like a female version of a Shōnen Jump hero - headstrong, determined, one-track minded and obnoxious - and Sucy Manbavaran is like Wednesday Addams fused with a poison-type Pokémon, and the regal, sophisticated rival Diana Cavendish, who is secretly a fangirl, in actuality isn't a mean girl at all!

How I'm reminded of how similar 'The Owl House' is to 'Little Witch Academia'.

However, the volume is a mess. Narratively, thematically, and in planning in general. It starts out well, and exciting, in how it adapts the anime introduction to the series. But after the second chapter, 'Little Witch Academia, Vol. 1' practically abandons its main plotline and becomes serialised and anecdotal. It includes stories episodes that are not that interesting, and that matter very little by the end. It should be too early for filler content already! It glosses over and brushes aside side characters, such as the entire Luna Nova Magical Academy staff (apart from Ursula Callistis and one or two bit-part professors, their names are not even revealed). Poor Ursula is underutilised, and then plain forgotten after the third chapter. MacGuffins, props and motifs are similarly discarded. I mean, seriously, what happened to Chariot's Shiny Rod after Akko used it to portal to Luna Nova? It's never mentioned again, as is Akko's living Alcor bird plushie, and her Shiny Chariot card.

Stuff that happens in the anime are referenced, but they are not included in the manga itself; such as Lotte Jansson being able to communicate with spirits, which apparently everyone somehow knows about. Why is there suddenly a dragon at the end, and what the heck is the Sorcerer's Stone and why is it so important? Very confusing and frustrating. The introductory volume has too many details missing from it. It's an adaptation that does not competently stand on its own.

Akko can be a selfish, inconsiderate and thoughtless pain in the backside, too. And sometimes her stupidity can be too much, too puzzling, too baffling. Not to mention that she is at fault for a lot of trouble, as in she starts her own problems, and doesn't end up resolving them - it's usually one of her friends who have to bail her out and fix the messes she caused in the first place.

At least Lotte and Sucy receive stories that reveal their backstories and develop their characters.

There are so many witch boarding school stories and franchises out there, it can be hard to find one that stands out. That strikes the eye, and is slightly more original than the last (and the next). I think what makes 'Little Witch Academia' distinct is its emphasis on humour. It's a comedy, while retaining its magic, and magical, shining heart. Plus it's cute! A cute all-ages anime. We're barely shown any actual schoolwork and themes of an academic nature - ironic, given its title!

Sadly, the manga version is too scatterbrained, confused and random (and surprisingly mundane with little stakes) for me to enjoy, despite liking the characters and comedy. I'm sure others will really fancy it, hold it to high esteem, and be entertained by it, toad warts and all. But I'm afraid I am not one of them.

Oh dear.

Oh well, maybe the anime will fully replenish my witch-loving heart. My magical girl child heart.

EDIT: Now read my review of 'Little Witch Academia: The Nonsensical Witch and the Country of the Fairies', and I shall keep that light novel and this flawed manga!

Final Score: 3/5

Having loved the original short film, I was super excited to read this. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a mixed bag.

Apparently this is a situation similar to ATTACK ON TITAN, where it is the rare instance where something was an anime first and then converted into a manga series. In the back, the author states that it's supposed to "adapt the anime as well as working in my own episodes, that way fans and new comers alike can still enjoy it."

That's great...except, they don't adapt all of the episodes and some of the new content relies on information found in those episodes. Worse yet, when this happens, there's no footnote to indicate as such (unlike the standard practice in graphic novels and comic book series) so it just feels like there are chapters missing.

Otherwise, it's very cute and wholesome. A fun little manga with the standard cast of characters with some really fun designs. Here's hoping volume 2 is a little less reliant on anime material.

A goofy witch school manga that reminds me a lot of the witch series I grew up on, like Worst Witch. Little Witch Academia is a tongue-in-cheek version of those magical series many of us grew up with, and it's very good at that.

Atsuko "Akko" Kagari is chasing her dream of becoming a great witch like her hero, Chariot and so goes to a prestigious magical school. The problem is, she absolutely sucks at magic. Through sheer force of will, she plans to overcome her lack of talent and makes some friends along the way.

It's fun and at least in the case of this manga, is surprisingly kid friendly for the makers of Kill La Kill (this manga is based on the series from Studio Trigger). It's a silly, lighthearted magical school manga, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cosy manga that I read during a lunch break. Did I use this to catch up on my reading challenge? Maaaybe.
But it's always good to mix some heavy, world-building fantasy with lighthearted manga about a girl wanting to be a witch. The manga had absolutely no sense of direction, but I've heard that the anime is better, so I might check that out instead.

After watching the Netlfix series and instantly falling in love with Akko, I just had to read this manga. I enjoyed reading it, however if you haven't watched the anime it might be hard to follow. It goes off on a tangent from time to time. So, I'd suggest to watch the anime before reading this manga.

Seventh book for the Booktubeathon

This is a cute story, but it didn't appeal to me, though I can see why many others enjoy it. I would probably like it better if I gave it a few more volumes. I'm curious how the Netflix adaptation is. I also found the art to be middle-of-the-road and a bit difficult for my eyes to follow. Akko, the main character, is very much the Naruto-type: ignorant, incompetent, and impulsive, yet the fact that she is well-meaning and has more interesting and capable side-character friends is supposed to hold the readers' interest.

Third book on the Booktubeathon.
6. Read a book with a beautiful spine

I bought this on holiday because it looked cute and I hadn't read a manga in forever.... I didn't actually make the connection that there was an anime serious until later. So I have now started the netflix show because it's fun.

As for the manga it delivered exactly what I expected, cute drawing, somewhat irratating hapless but adorable herione and magic. It's not a ground breaking manga but it's a comforting familar formula that is enjoyable to read.
