Simon Bestwick was born in Wolverhampton in 1974. He has worked in various jobs, from fast food operative through drama teacher to training administrator. His short fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, including Nasty Piece of Work, All Hallows, Darkness Rising, Extremes 5, and Beneath the Ground. He lives in Swinton, Lancashire, and when not writing can be found indulging his interests: walking, films, literature, rock, folk, and jazz music, good food, and the occasional pint.
Simon Bestwick has surely got to rate as one of the most underrated authors writing in the horror genre today. His ability to create a dark atmosphere where almost anything can (and does) happen is more than sufficient to keep me, as a reader, hooked and begging for more. In this collection of nine short stories, echoes of the legacy of M.R. James abound. To try and pick one favourite is an impossible task but 'Dab and Sole' would be a strong contender for the most Jamesian, yet remains original and fresh, as well as downright scary. 'As White As Bone' contained a definite 'didn't see that coming' twist as did 'Tonight the War is Over'. In fact, there isn't a weak entry here. One to read when the lights are firmly switched on - and probably when you are not alone. Excellent.
Read this after winning a copy at the online book launch. Great fun and a worthy addition to this black shuck shadows series.... Loved the hidden message in the final story. Will certainly be reading.more by Mr Bestwick
