As the much-anticipated date approaches for the double wedding of Elizabeth to John and Mary to Bill, the Classen sisters are trying their best to get everything just right. While Martha deals with the picky wedding-cake baker, who just can’t seem to make up her mind, the sisters receive a flurry of incoming mail. To their delight, most of it consists of congratulations and RSVPs for the wedding ceremony. However, one letter in a bright red envelope stands out…an anonymous poison-pen letter demanding that the sisters vacate their home and store immediately. At first, the sisters think they are the sole targets of the letter writer, but as the days pass they soon discover they aren’t the only ones in Bird-in-Hand who have been receiving hostile mail. In the flurry of trying to uncover the anonymous letter writer, old suspicions are raised and long-held grudges are unearthed. Can the Classen sisters solve their latest mystery before two of them say “I do”?
I love the cover of Secondhand Chances. It hints at the wedding theme. This book ends a long running series for Guideposts: Mysteries of Lancaster County. It also marks the first solo-authored book by Shaen Layle. This book is set in a quaint town in Pennsylvania with a trio of sisters, Elizabeth, Mary and Martha Classen. Here we see the approaching double wedding of Elizabeth and Mary. If it weren’t hectic enough with the wedding preparations, now the sisters are dealing with anonymous threat letters. They double down to get to the bottom of the mystery. With many who fit their suspect list, the sisters investigate in order to rule out all but the real culprit. Well written with the flavor of Amish country, friends, faith and community, this book is a fitting end to a fun series. A nod to Jessica Fletcher and vet Dr. Pol was a nice touch as was the wonderful looking recipe at the end. For a faith-filled cozy type series, check out all the books in The Mysteries of Lancaster County. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
In this final book of the series Elizabeth,Mary and Martha’s stories are completed. As Elizabeth and Mary prepare for their double wedding they receive some disturbing letters and then things start happening around their home and business that keep them on edge and worried. They work to try to solve the mystery and keep everyone safe. Shaen Layle has done a fantastic job of writing this book with a lesson on forgiveness and second chances. Although I haven’t read the whole series I feel that by reading the two written by Ms Layle that I pretty much got the gist of the whole story. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries you are sure to enjoy this one. I received a complimentary copy of this book with no requirement for a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
What a delightful book to read! I enjoy seeing what sort of mysteries the Classen sisters get into and how they solve it.
Spring has come to Lancaster County. The sisters are all excited because there is going to be a double wedding. Elizabeth is marrying John and Mary is marrying Bill.
There are some wedding troubles with the plans that some have to changed. The troubles are quite frustrating.
There are also troubles with their family property. They are getting anonymous notes with threats. Shortly after the notes started the vandalism started on the property.
I can’t write much more without giving away spoilers.
Do the sisters solve the mystery before the wedding? Who is sending the notes? Why the vandalism? Why do the wedding plans keep changing? What does the person want that’s sending the notes and the doing the vandalism?
Secondhand Chances is the finale to a wonderful cozy mystery series. It may be read in order or as a standalone. Two of the Classen sisters are planning their double wedding. With the flurry of RSVPs for the wedding comes a red envelope carrying a poison pen letter that demands the sisters give up all they have. When the vandalism starts, the sisters discover they are not the only ones receiving the hate mail. Will they be able to find out who the sender is before the wedding? Will the wedding even take place with all of the changes that are taking place? I love the theme of forgiveness and second chances covered in this story. One day I hope to read all of the series. I imagine writing a series in which different authors continue the next books. Shaen Layle does a wonderful job of continuing the story in the two books she has written for it. I look forward to more from this up and coming author. I received an advance copy from the author. A review was not required.
These 3 sisters, what can you say? Trouble seems to follow them everywhere or just seems to show up for them. No need to worry though, they always take on the trouble head-on and do their own sleuthing especially Elizabeth. I absolutely love these sisters, Martha, Mary and Elizabeth and their story! Highly recommend! Great job Shaen, you did again. Marvelous!
Secondhand Chances was a wonderful conclusion to the story of the Classen sisters. The identity of the poison pen writer and the situations the sisters found themselves in were intriguing & kept me guessing. I am sad that the series is complete, but this was a delightful read!
