I've been around the power community my entire life. I have a special bond with the famous Blue Star; the combination of Finnley's telekinetic explosions and Nate's shadow manipulation.
You see, I'm their daughter.
Let me rephrase that. I'm their powerless daughter.
On the night of my Trials, I passed every test except the most important one - getting powers from a power source - and now I'm stuck with the constant reminder that I failed to be something great. While my family and friends go out and save others who can't control their powers, I'm left on the sidelines.
Which is why I'm furious when Ryder shows up, claiming he doesn't want those incredible powers he possesses. It sparks some deep fire inside me to think that he's throwing away a gift I so desperately want. No, it really sparked something, and now that anger is getting worse. He might not have a choice about getting involved, because his presence has triggered something in me that I'm not sure is going to end in anything but destruction.
Because what good can come from a stellar collision?
If you loved the Soul trilogy following Finnley, Nate, and Glitch, you'll love the extension of the Blue Star story in the Star trilogy. Not required to read the Soul trilogy to follow this series.

Where to begin? Star Collapsed is an intriguing fantasy story with dual viewpoints. Our main female character Kiya is the teenage daughter of Blue Star, a infamous couple with telekinetic explosion power and shadow manipulation. Our main male character Ryder is a teenager with the untrained power of astronomical manipulations. The community the Kiya lives in is full of people with powers and those who don't have them but have family members that do. Due to unforeseen circumstances, when Kiya has an opportunity to be granted a power it backfires leaving her paralyzed temporarily but with the reminding guilt of not getting something she thought destined to have. Ryder is brought into the community when he almost reveals himself to unsuspecting humans and is reluctant to learn more about his powers. When Kiya and Ryder meet literal sparks fly and they are left trying to figure out what is happening that somehow connects them. This story is a great introduction to a future series.
Kiya was an interesting character from the beginning. She is strong and determined and works hard to achieve her goals, but when she doesn't attain the one thing she has had her heart set on she becomes somewhat hard hearted and dismissive. She has a don't mess with me attitude and although she can sometimes come off a little rough, I truly loved her character. Ryder was a little bit more tough for me to like. I often try to imagine what I would be like in these characters situations but I couldn't help but feel for how level headed he was made out to be he came off as a little whiney sometimes. The twins Declan and Isobel were two of my favorite characters and I loved reading their interactions with not only each other but with Kiya as well. Laura really brings out their friendship well in this story. My other favorite character was House, the somewhat magical home of Kiya, her parents and sister that has a bit of its own personality although it doesn't really talk.
The only thing I struggled slightly with in this story was the introduction. It reveals what/how Blue Star is and it left me somewhat confused. I did have to reread it twice and then once I was deeper into the book went back and read it again and understood it a bit more. It says you don't need to read the Soul Trilogy to understand this book (which I agree) but I feel like I may have understood a few things about the adults more if I had.
Thank you to Laura Winter and BookFunnel for a review copy.
This felt a little on the young side of YA for me but that is just my preference. This is a spin off of another super-powered series which I think you would get more from this if you had more background. There is an explanation at the start which I believe is the other series broken down into one chapter. It was a little complicated so this is where I think reading the other series first would help.
What I liked was it was an original story. Not your usual standard superpowers and interesting concept the Blue Star. The older characters were really interesting and the previous series is about their story. This is about their daughter who despite being born from the 2 most powerful beings she is completely powerless and has had a pretty tough time.
There is a bit of a love triangle but sadly I didn’t feel the chemistry between any of these characters yet. It’s only book 1 so these can grow.. maybe this is where my feeling this is for a younger audience comes from. I got an advanced reader copy from Voracious Readers in return for a non biased review. Personally for me it’s a 3.5/5 but I think this is one the younger readers will really enjoy so don’t let me put you off.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well-rounded and interesting and the world of superpowers that Winter has built is believable and engaging.
A lot of SFF YA gets bogged down with relationship drama IMO, but this one didn't. Which isn't to say there isn't romance, or relationships -- there are. I'm more talking about the sorts of stories where the relationship drama feels contrived or is annoying because it makes the characters turn into idiots -- this story isn't like that. Which sounds like backhanded praise, but it's really not -- I just don't know how else to describe what I'm thinking of.
And yes, this book does come after a different set of books in the same world, dealing with the parents of Star Collapsed's main characters -- but I haven't read those books and didn't need to. There is an introduction before the book starts in the words of the main character which basically gives a brief overview of the happenings in those books, too, so you won't be left in the dark.
Fascinating reading. I loved the way that the first chapter dealt with the history of the community. Telling the story from the points of view of both of the main characters also allows us to see the different viewpoints and adds to the general reading experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would recommend it to other readers of young adult fiction and fantasy and also to anyone who wants to try the genre. I received a copy of this book from the author via voracious readers and agreed to leave a review in return.
Good storyline and kept me interested from start to finish. Fleshed out characters, good descriptions and plenty of action. I would like to know more about the other characters with powers as well as the main ones although this book is a good starting point to introduce you to what the main characters can do. If, like me you enjoyed X Men, you'll enjoy this too.
An epic tale of strong young women learning to use their super powers while dealing with the emotional roller coaster of finding out who they are and who they love. Highly recommended!
Opening chapter is the complex background of the power community as told by Kiya. I don't like being thrown into a story like that, I always feel like I missed the prequel.
(Apparently this is a spin off🤦🏽♀️, guess I should have checked)
It's a little refreshing to see the protagonist is in the LGBTQ+ community, as many YA readers are identifying themselves as such. This story gives them a voice, someone to connect with.
I like how the story is told from both Kiya and Ryder's perspective. I feel like that completes the story. I am also a sucker for enemy-to-lovers plot. Hoping it goes that way. I really want Ryder and Kiya to be together. I know she has history with Isobel...blah blah blah, but they seem better as friends.
Kiya's confession nearly had me in tears. I felt that pain and it was written so well.
I loved how the story progressed. There was action that I really wasn't expecting.
I honestly felt like this story was very good! I read this quickly after my initial misgivings I got so wrapped up in the book and the characters. I really want the rest of the series ASAP!
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. Take teens Kiya and Ryder, add twins Isobel and Declan and you have a cast if characters that will draw you into their story. Some unexpected themes and twists make this an enjoyable read!
Absolutely loved this book, I can’t wait for the next one. I felt like I was there with everyone and was on tenterhooks when ‘the main event’ happened! An excellent standalone story in my opinion or can obviously be read as part of the series. I think once you read one, you’ll want more though!
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
