This was good!
It's been forever since I've read a shifter romance where the "human" turns into a wolf..
I liked the insta love without the insta fuck. I really felt that connection between them 🥺
The storyline was juicy and kept me hooked.
The only bummer was no claiming bites.
Off to Alex's book.

2.5* rounded up (because for me 2 stars means I didn't like it). I had some issues with this. Charlie is a wolf raised by his human grandmother after his parents are killed and he's clueless. Turns out he's Luke's mate and for a year Luke has been stalking him waiting or him to turn 19 when he will shift and then he can claim him as his mate. However a week or so before Charlie's birthday, his grandmother suddenly dies and Luke steps in to help Charlie through it (they'd only met once at the grocery store where Charlie works but he doesn't seem put of by it, small town mentality I guess). But it seems someone else is aware Charlie is a wolf and reveals the truth just before he turns and Luke reveals the truth about what he is. They then quickly leave to Luke's Dad's place and Charlie is kidnapped by a guy that claims Charlie's parents promised him to another pack.

My issues are, do not think leaving some poor kid clueless until the day his body suddenly shifts into a wolf is rather irresponsible. The poor kid would lose his mind. Give him some warning, explain what would happen. So beyond some cuddling and a bit of making out, they don't really get together until the end of the book because either Luke is keeping his distance, they are dealing with the funeral or Charlie is kidnapped.

My bigger issue was grammatical mistakes. I am pretty easy going. I don't mind the odd error, it happens to the best of us. But towards the end I was noticing more and more and it was really pulling me out when I noticed them.

I also see at the end they say "male wolves can get pregnant" which means I will likely not read any more books in this series. Surrogates are good. Adoption? It seems most of the new shifter books are mpreg these days and it's just not my thing. *shrug* Oh well.

A solid 3. Needs more editing due to the many grammatical errors throughout. The storyline hooked me and I did enjoy both MC’s. I found it hard to put this book down. I love me some MM shifter love :)

The one thing that may ruin this series for me is the mpreg element. There were no pregnant men in this one, but it was discussed and so could happen in the future books. Personally this is a book turn off for me, but I know some enjoy it so to each their own.

As of now, I’m looking forward to reading about Alex and one of the new feral wolves who I assume will be the MC’s of the next book :)

Shift
By J.P. Murray

Charlie lost his parents years ago. His life now consists of caring for the only family he has left, his feisty grandmother, whose illness doesn't give him much time with her before she is soon gone too.

Charlie is fascinated by the wolf that comes to his back yard every night at the same time and often wishes he could run through the forest with it. One night Charlie is stunned to see that wolf turn into the gorgeous man who has been his rock after his Grandma passed.

Luke is the leader of one of the King's packs who are sent all around the world to break up pack disputes or finish a war. He found his mate almost a year ago, but Charlie isn't old enough to shift yet. Nor does Charlie even know he himself is a shifter.

When a prophecy (of sorts) comes out Charlie is kidnapped and taken from Luke by an arrogant greedy alpha shifter who is determined to mate with him. Even though Charlie has been told Luke is dead he continues to try to hold out hope that Luke will rescue him.

I very much enjoyed this book. I loved Charlie and Luke's characters. As well as the members of Luke's pack. I felt the confusion Charlie felt when his wolf wanted to be with the new pack, but he still wanted Luke as his mate.

There was only one area that left me confused. After Charlie was kidnapped they made it seem like he had been with the new pack at least a month, but then after that Luke says it was a week they'd been searching for him. Being unsure about the actual amount of time kind of threw a wrench in the works of fluidity.

There is love, hurt/comfort, loyalty, and friendship in this story and of course a villian you hate.

I'm not sure how many books are in the series, but I definitely plan to move on to the 2nd book that is Alex and Lars story.

Note: While male shifters can get pregnant in this story it is not a part of the story itself and is only mentioned.

Good start

I've always loved Shifter books, and PNR romance. This book is low angst, mild violence, brief spicy times, and fated mates. No pregnancy, and a nice king are all included.

Absolutely Fantastic Story !! . . .

Charlie's parents died in a car crash when he was 5 years old. He lived with his grandmother since then. With her ill health, he postponed college to take care of her. Every night, he sits on the porch and sees a huge wolf come into his backyard. He is unaware of his own background and the fact the wolf inside of himself will be released on his birthday. That is what the wolf that visits him every night is waiting for – his mate.

Luke has been waiting for Charlie for a long time now. He is Alpha and he and his pack will be waiting to help Charlie through his shift. When Charlie’s grandmother dies, Luke is there for him, offering a ride to the hospital. Luke’s Alpha qualities could soothe Charlie and help him get through this. He held him while he cried. He stayed with him while the doctor confirmed her death. And he took him home to his grandmother’s house and set him into bed while he kept watch over him from across the hall. He had another week before Charlie’s wolf would come forward. In the morning, he made breakfast for Charlie, enjoying that he could take care of his mate.

Charlie started back to work at the grocery store. A man was suddenly in front of him and the hair at the back of his neck prickled as he had the urge to run. The man smirked and said he found what he wanted, paid for a box of crackers, and left. Charlie felt a threat. He was exhausted at the end of the day and, with his car still not fixed, he had a long walk home. And as he walked out the door, Luke was there to drive him home. He had an overwhelming safe feeling whenever Luke was around. As they drove to get something to eat, Charlie felt eyes watching him and saw the man from the store again.

When Luke was ready to visit Charlie in his wolf form, his packmate Alex went with him for a romp in the woods. But Luke detected a foreign scent near the house. It was another Alpha. The scent indicated he had left in a car, and Luke heard Charlie come out on the porch. The day of the funeral, Luke drove him to the church and then to the cemetery. As soon as he opened the car door, he smelled the other wolf and was on alert. His pack arrived and made sure the area was safe. But after the reception at Charlie’s, with Charlie sleeping, Luke scented the other wolf, shifted and tracked it down. The wolf escaped but, when Luke shifted and walked naked to the back door, he heard Charlie’s gasp. He had probably seen him shift! Three more wolves ran up, looking up to Luke who told them to check the woods to be sure “he” was gone. Charlie said, “I thought I heard my wolf…” then warm arms lifted him as he passed out.

The King called Luke and told him to get the pack and Charlie out of there right away and come home to the compound. There was danger. They started the journey, but a construction project stopped traffic. Luke looked out the side window, eyes widening, and an explosion hit, knocking him unconscious as Charlie was pulled out of the vehicle and thrown into a van. With Charlie kidnapped for his important blood-line, Luke and the pack will need to find him, quickly! Luke hadn’t claimed Charlie yet and he was about to shift for the first time. Would they be too late?

This was an amazing story, so much rich detail and a slightly different slant on the shifter history that we usually hear. The story was beautiful, full of love and care, as Charlie starts to learn his story and prepare for his new life. But will it be with Luke? Will Luke lose his fated mate after such a long wait to find him?

I don’t recommend...long review

Wow, where do I begin with this book....i am not the least bit impressed with this and only read all the way through to see if it would get better...it did not. I have no idea why it was called a shifter paranormal romance, it was barely that.

Some books I enjoy from the start and others take a little bit, but once it gets going you cannot put it down. This book was neither!! I picked this up after reading another paranormal shifter series and was immediately disappointed. I swear the author was making the story up as she went along and adding in things just to make the book longer.

At page 79 of 189 and the young ML is only then finding out he is a wolf and his first shift will happen when he turns 19...come on!! You mean to tell me only when he turns 19, will he have the senses of a wolf but before then he is a regular human ?:/ no exceptional speed, enhanced hearing or smell, nothing until he hits 19.

Why did his fated mate not tell him they were fated and what that means, why is it that at the very end he gives him a ring? not even a bite that bonds them both, a special ring...I felt like I was reading a regular romance with a few shifts of wolves thrown in.

Maybe I missed it as I was skipping pages just to get to the end, but I also found it crazy that Luke, the other ML kept calling his father “my king” and didn’t explain to his mate that the king is his father...again another human thing...at least let him be Alpha King.

So many things didn’t make sense in this novel. Like if the King has a bloody plane, WTF are they driving and thinking about booking tickets and rentals when he tells them to pack up quickly?

I understand the author may have wanted to stand out and not copy what others are doing, but research what is popular in other shifter novels and then find your own groove. I swear the good ratings from this are all people new to shifter novels who like regular non-shifter novels.

Don’t get me started with the MM romance. I love reading MM romances because in many of the ones I’ve read BOTH MLS are strong and I got sick and tired of regular romance novels that always depict the female as dumb, helpless or just weak. This book has a female lead with a male name. UGH!! this drove me nuts.

Lastly, if the author was tired of reading novels with too much of the hot and heavy and wanted to focus on the action and story, make sure the story is AMAZING, this was not, so with only ONE heated scene at the VERY end of the book, I was even more disappointed.

Patience pays off. Charlie's parents died and he was raised by his grandmother. His grandmother's health starts to fail as he approaches his 19th birthday. He decides to stay home with her instead of going away to college. Charlie, has no idea of his other half. He kept seeing a wolf around his house and thought he was going crazy. He felt drawn and couldn't explain why. Luke, wolf found his mate and knew he had to wait until he reached his majority to help him change and adjust to his new life. His pack, Derek, Alex and Javier all were waiting for Charlie. They were on leave from working for the King, waiting for Charlie to come into his own and join the pack. The dynamic of this world is interesting. Luke patiently helped Charlie after he suffered a catastrophic event. Charlie didn't know why, but Luke's touch, his presence calmed and comforted him. There is another wolf stalking Charlie. Then Charlie's world went sideways when he was kidnapped. Does Luke find him in time? Does Charlie perfer Luke or Holden? What will the King's council say? Nice story. Good thread. Luke's pack sounds nice. Good story. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Nice start to the series. I love reading about wolf shifters and this didn't disappoint. Charlie, a young man with so many tragedies in his life is totally unaware of the wonderful gift he has and of the alpha prince Luke watching over him. These two are fated and while the story unfolds you are kept on the edge from the time Charlie learns the truth, bonds to his alpha and pack, becomes one with his wolf and fights to get to his forever. Some moments made me smile, at times a little weepy but mostly cheering the guys on for their HEA. I love when everything comes together and this had a very satisfying ending. I can't wait for the next chapter in the series with Alex...I'm hooked.

Ok, but I have so many questions

So how does Luke know that he and Charlie are fated? It’s never quite explained here. And how do they seal the mating that fate arranged? It seemed to be important to the story, but there wasn’t any biting during the one time that they were intimate, and there was no sort of magical/mystical sign that they had been bound together. Does the fact that Charlie is white have any significance? Can either/both Luke and Charlie get pregnant? If the king is so laid back, why does Luke believe that his behavior has to be so regimented, else the other wolves would revolt? Would mating with Charlie have given the rogue alpha power? Or was just the alpha’s imagination?

Holy buckets of glory!

What an unexpected surprise this was. I love Fated Mate tropes and shifters and M/M. This book turned out to be even better than I was hoping! If I had to make a comparison, it’s like Twilight (the book, not the movie), but with wolves instead of vampires, gay MC’s and the wolves don’t take four books to actually have sex. It’s been awhile since I’ve been sucked into a book like this and I legit loved it so hard. I borrowed this on KU, but I will most likely purchase a copy of my very own as well. I’m hoping the rest of the series lives up to the high expectations I now have after reading this one!

Shift by JP Murray captivated me. It hit all my buttons for fated mates (one main character waiting for centuries for that second main character to be born) with kidnapping, possessiveness, rescuing, MPREG, royal and political intrigue. But it lacked the darkness that I thought it should have and the darkness that I crave and expected from a plot like this. However, it didn't stop me from enjoying this story.

lots of build up

I enjoyed the characters in the story but was disappointed by the extremely drawn out build up only to get such a small glimpse of their bonding. They barley kissed and only had sex once. I just want more from a book when the whole thing revolves around a couple growing together I want more once they finally get together. I don’t like when they get to get her at the very end because it feels like we miss out on all the good stuff and only read about the drama and the journey.

Charrlie is a wolf shifter but does not know it since he was orphaned young. He comes across as a truly caring man who has put part of his life on hold to take care of the grandmother who raised him. This is a fated mate story and his mate, Luke, is keeping watch over him until Charlie comes of age for a wolf. The general story is simple but effective. It needs editing.

Interesting story but seriously in need of a good editor

The bones of an interesting story are here but a good editor could have made this a much better book. Aside from lots of proofreading issues there are continuity issues and story elements that needed fleshing out and better detail.

I’m intrigued enough by the start to check out book two but if the editing and proofreading isn’t any better that will be it for me.

This was a good story, however, it had a very slow start to me and it seemed to drag until close to the end. I was hoping that Luke and Charlie could spend more romantic time together but that didn't really happen....... Spoiler.......

and then Charlie gets kidnapped and it took awhile before they were together again. I did enjoy what happened to the leader of the rogue pack, and I also enjoyed the ending.

It’s OK

The storyline is fairly simple and to the point, with minimal character development. Lots of annoying minor grammatical errors, also. One big battle, one big revelation and then the story stops. Not really the end, there will be another book which follows, and not quite a hanging ending.

This was the most poorly edited book I’ve ever read. I cannot believe how it was even published. I’d have been so embarrassed to have this work released as my first novel.

There were several times where the word “hate” replaced the word “the”. Those two words aren’t even close to each other, so I’m puzzled as to how that even worked out.

2.5 / 5 at best for me

It's an action book, not a romance. There is no romance - not even the smallest bit of meaningful conversation between the MCs to convey any kind of connection. It's insta love, and action drama keeping them apart with filler sequence in between. I did read the whole book, but... This author's style is just not my type.

The pull between Luke and Charlie was strong. I was giggling at Charlie’s response when he first saw Luke.

Luke was sweet but spent too long dilly dallying as opposed to, getting to know Charlie and preparing him.

This was a good read but needed a little more character development. Luke and Charlie had a nice slow burn romance but everything between them felt rushed.

The book is pretty good except for some obvious things that was done in the book. I'm not going to do spoilers or anything but that is the reason I did 4 stars. Luke is an Alpha and he is in charge of his group but he needs a clue, lol

I enjoyed this story. It was well-written shifter story with Charlie who is not aware he is a shifter and Luke who knows that Charlie is his mate but is waiting until Charlie's 19th birthday when he will shift. Things do not go the way Luke plans. Recommend reading.

New pack

I love shifter books and this was a great start for a new series. This was the first book that I have read from thus author and it had a nice emotional arc as Charlie figured out what he was.

While I can appreciate a new spin on shifters, these things just didn’t work for me here.

I didn’t like Charlie’s wolf accepting the other pack and alpha, I just can’t see that happening if he was fated to someone else.

And it was all tied up a bit oddly for me.

Hmmm... I skimmed most of this, tbh, so it'sprobablya 2.5☆, althothoigh it wasn't bad. I assume it's the author's first book? The pacing was so slow I had trouble getting engaged, but I'm going to move on with the series and see if the quality picks up. 🤞

The book was okay, not a great shifter novel, but okay. The characters are not engaging to me, the premise the same. I'll explore a couple more to see if they get better and this a "first novel" syndrome book.

New shifter world

Enjoyed this PNR take on wolf shifters. All the intrigue mixed with all the emotions.
Note: unfortunately plenty of errors, too.

Kindle own, paranormal, book in a series, standalone, age gap, fated mates, death of a side character, kidnapping, wolf shifter
