Luke Rawlins trusts no one. Growing up in a pack filled with madness and deception will do that to a wolf. As a result, his mind is cold and ruthless, his shattered heart dark and empty. Desperate calculation forced him to choose life as a rogue: always hunted, always watching his back. When he finally found something resembling normal life, he seized the chance to prove his own worth. The only thing missing now is Tala, the only woman he’s ever loved—until she double-crossed him and turned his heart to ash.
Tala Mingan never wanted to be broken, scarred, or merciless, but her upbringing made sure of that. She's the product of a damaged pack, and in order to survive she had to be calculating and outwardly heartless. Even so, deep inside she misses Luke so badly she know it's slowly killing her. At least she has memories of the secretly joyful life they dared try to build together—until her treacherous betrayal. The one she knows Luke will never forgive. Trapped by the cruel pack that refuses to let her go, she's resigned to a short, lonely existence instead.
Then she's offered a terrible choice. The kind that leaves Tala truly desperate—and willing to do whatever it takes. Even if it means a final, brutal betrayal of the true mate of her heart...or her own life.
I found my attention straying fr9m this book repeatedly until the fight scene at the end when it finally seemed to stand up and shout “hey, I have arrived”. And then, just like that, the fight scene was over, and the hum drum was back. I’ve read several books in this series and remembered the big bad guys in it. It might have helped some to have a better refresher on Luke, because I found his lack of actual memories of any past bad deeds at the hands of his old pack instead of what came across to me as a whiny rendition of “oh, they were sssooo bad,” just didn’t really cut it for me. That was about the first 10% of the book, and I found myself skimming pages just trying to find something to tell me WHY they were so bad, other than they were just awful, evil people. .
When it got to Tala, she was a little more interesting as there was some actual backstory on her as to why she felt the old pack were such odious creatures. Eventually, there are very good explanations in the book and things that actually happen in THIS book that make it obvious that Luke and Tala’s last pack is basically run by a modern day Hitler.
The insta-love for Luke and Tala was also outright annoying. Yeah, they were supposed to be mates. And I know that in pretty much every shifter story ever, fated mates instantly know they’re meant to be together. This story was supposed to be a bit different. They’d been mates in the past, just never mates. At the outset, we know Luke left her to fend for herself at the old pack and never went back to try to save her. And then, one small, inane thing happens with the pack, and suddenly, they’re all lovey-dovey again. For me, that was so far out of left field, it was blindsiding.
The saddest thing for me in this book, overall, is there are great, great characters here. They has been great world building for the universe in which these two people live. Even the plot isn’t bad. It’s just didn’t come together for me well enough to hold my attention. If you’ve read every book in this series and have patiently awaited this story, you may likely have a totally different take...or not.

This was a fab read that was full of action, danger, suspense, strong characters and romance. A lot of detail was put into this story and I loved how everything was so clear. It also reads as a stand-alone because of that detail. Their journey to an HEA was a rough one and it was quite the adventure to follow along. Good fun!
Luke has proved to Channing that he is not a rogue, and has been Alpha of his own clan for a year. When Tala manages to escape, she finds her way to the Black Mesa pack - and Luke, who was her love vbut had left her behind when he escaped the old pack. Will they manage to sort out their differences and find their love again? When the old pack schemes to attack them - all of the packs - at the same time, will they survive? Or will their old pack win and dominate all of the wolves in the area? Who will live, and who will die? Loving this series!

After looking forward to this story for so, so long, I was left feeling very disappointed. This moved along too slowly. It didn’t engage my interest and it was extremely easy to put this down, quite a few times in fact. I cannot put my finger on why it hit a discordant note, could be the way the words were written, but it just didn’t engage my interest, not even the big battle scene. At times it didn’t feel like a shifter story. The interaction, or lack of interaction, between Tala and Luke went on for a long time and stagnated the story for me. Where were the fireworks, the accusations, the reasons and the hugely needed apology? We get nothing for over 50% of the book except background and filler revolving around Luke’s pack and it’s members. It was nice to get that information but it comes at the expense of anything interesting happening between two supposed mates. Then Tala and Luke just have sex after going on a pack run. Not because anything is settled but because they are horny, with heightened emotions. Then they talk but I would have preferred they clear the air of misunderstandings prior to having sex. But they still don’t mate. But we never get a definitive reason as to why Luke did not try and take Tala with him when he was escaping. Nice to have all the baddies dealt with but what about all those poor wolves that were made to amalgamate and fight. Was anything done to sort Canada’s pack problems out?
Fearing for his sanity and his life, Luke had made a decision that made him feel ashamed, but it had been his salvation. Tala had been left behind, to her fate in a hostile, cruel and dangerous environment and for that she could not forgive Luke. But her strength and decision made her put everything at risk and go in search of her freedom and a new life. The Black Mesa Pack was a sanctuary for each of them and fate brought them together again to face more than one fight. The feelings were there but what about the trust? Was it lost? With deadly enemies threatening them all there was no time to grieve for the past but to strengthen themselves to face a mortal fight that could free them or kill them all. I liked the detailed narratives full of intense emotions. Tala was strong, fierce and smart with a good insight that helped her when she needed it. Interesting how Luke constantly struggled with her emotions and fear that her past would take hold of him. Action, suspense, strong emotions, camaraderie and strong ties between secondary characters that I liked to see again, unhinged enemies, doubts, an intense and exciting battle, romance and passion. Voluntarily reviewed this copy that I received free from Booksprout and I enjoyed.
I loved this book when I read it as part of the Black Mesa Wolves Box Set. Black Mesa Wolves Box Set by J. K. Harper is a set of nine different books of the series all put together into the perfect reading order in one group. The nine books included in this set are: Guardian Wolf, Alpha Wolf, Hunting Wolf, Wild Wolf, Solstice Wolf, Christmas Wolf, New Year Wolf, Protector Wolf, and Fire Wolf. Every one of the books in this set was a wonderful read. Each individual book features a different couple who were forever mate and all of the stories are tied together as members of the Black Mesa Wolf Pack. I think anyone who loves reading about shifters or paranormal romance will love this box set where everyone eventually gets their happy ever after ending.
It was a good story but I found the dialogue too cheesy and awkward sounding, especially the so-called loving or sexy talk. I did enjoy the action and fight scenes and thought they were well written, as well as the plot. I haven’t read the other books in the series, so I’m sure I’m missing some nuances in the character interactions and backgrounds of the characters, but I was still able to follow the story. Some major plot lines ended in this book, so it will be interesting to see how future books in this series progress (sorry to be vague but no spoilers).
Ninth book of the series. Can be read as a stand-alone but would advise to read in order to have a better understanding of what is happening. Luke is the alpha of his pack and has watched his pack find their mates. But he would never admit that he wants his own. His past has tainted his future and he is unable to look past it. Tala is part of his past but like him she may not be able to let it go either. The story has amazing characters and you really get to know them. You feel their pain and happiness. But there is a war coming and even if they prepare it may mean the end for them all.
What a strong ending to a wonderful series. Two strong alpha wolves finally together and battling for their lives and their pack. Classic case of good over evil.
J.K. Harper has written a 5-star book. This is the story of Tala and Luke. Tala and Luke were both wolf shifters and raised with the Upper North Woods Pack. The Alpha of this pack is Luke's father but he is a mean alpha. Luke was able to escape from the pack but he had to leave Tala behind. Tala was his mate but he had not claimed her yet when he left. Now two years later he is in a good place with the Black Mesa Wolf Pack. The alpha Channing Bardou has started a new pack, The Ridgecrest Pack, and has made Luke their Alpha. There are only twelve members in the new pack. Tala was finally able to escape from her pack, but she is being tracked until she lost the ones tracking her. She has been pointed to the Black Mesa Pack by another pack alpha. Tala is not used to people being kind to her and this is what she gets from the Black Mesa Pack. She is talking to a few of the females in the pack when she hears footsteps. She looks towards the sound and in walks Luke. She is shocked to see him. He is just as shocked to see her. Neither one expected to see the other again. Channing decides that since the Ridgecrest pack only had twelve members that Tala would call that pack her new home. Tala is still mad at Luke for leaving her with their old pack. She doesn't talk or see Luke for two weeks except for the training sessions the pack has. Finally Luke goes to talk to Tala and they work things out between them. They still have feelings for each other and they claim each other as mates. Channing calls Luke and tells him that his brother Bashar and cousin Vladimir has been caught but they have called Tala and Luke traitors and they want them brought up to the tribunal that day. Luke tells Tala what is going on and she tells him that she is going with him. He tells her that he needs her to stay and help protect the pack since they both know that their old pack is coming for them. Luke takes his lead guardian Caleb with him and when they get to the tribunal and it gets underway, things are looking good that Bashar and Vladimir will get what is coming to them. Bashar and Vladimir don't seem worried about what is going on. Someone comes into the tribunal and tells Channing that he had just received a call saying that the Ridgecrest pack is under attack by fifty wolves and they need some help. Channing brings things to an end and about that time the tribunal is attacked by three hundred wolves. Channing tells his pack and all the other alpha's and wolves to destroy all. He tells Luke and Caleb that they can leave when things there are handled. Tala and her pack are holding their own with the attackers. They have trained for this and seem to be holding their own. The alpha Fenris Rawlins is with the attackers. And one of the ones that are helping the Ridgecrest pack is Kurt. His family had been killed by Fenris and now Kurt is going to kill him. The fight keeps going and the Ridgecrest pack is taking the attackers out one by one. When Luke and Caleb get back to the pack, it is to see Tala and Zoe trying to get Bran inside since he was hurt. Luke looks around and he sees that his pack is still all there, some are hurt but still standing. He sees a body lying in the snow and he sees that it is his father, Fenris and he is dead. Tala is going up against Bashar and she is holding her own. She is the one who lets him know that his father is dead. She yells to Emma and Kurt for them to let Bashar go to his father. If need be they can take him out. Can the Ridgecrest Pack take the Upper North Woods pack out? Will Tala and Luke have the life they should have had now they are safe? This was a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone.

The addition starts with the book cover….yeah…yeah…yeah don’t judge a book by its cover they say ….well we all do it and this one here it is the scratch to your itch or better yet the filling to your oreos! Speaking of filling…..wait, that’s for later. Within the first chapters you get the panoramic view of whom you’re dealing with! By the time you’ve figured out who is who and who to like and dislike, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter! Can’t say I didn’t warn you. Luke was an alpha but as long as his cruel, mean, horrible alpha is ruling he will continue to endure cruelty at the hands of his own father. Tala is Luke’s mate, but he left without her and left her there with the all the cruelty being dished out and for that she feels she can’t forgive Luke for leaving her. She finally has a chance to escape just as Luke did so long ago and she takes that chance but who does she run into none other than Luke but because she is still mad at him, she decides not to deal with him. Luke takes the time to go and see her trying to mend the bridge he tore down between them and with them being mates they need each other. Well, when his father causes a war and all packs are finding to survive can the two of them find love and happiness?

Luke and Tala were part of an abusive pack run by his father. He leaves and later she escapes, eventually meeting up again at his new pack. The suspense soars as the old pack comes after them and the tribunal. Lots of action, struggle, and strength. They are able to fully mate which makes them stronger for the outcome. Good ending.

Luke and Tala's story is a good read, it tells us about how Luke managed to escape from the pack they were born into but in order to do so, he had to leave Tala behind, even though he knew they were mates. His father was the Alpha assisted by his brother but he couldn't stay, at first, he lived as a rough before finding and being taken in by the Black Mesa pack. Then he was given the opportunity to become the alpha of his own pack, a chance to create a new future.
Two years after Luke left her behind Tala was able to escape, she somehow ended up asking for sanctuary in the pack ruled by Luke. Both were shocked to find each other again, and at first, she had a hard time forgiving him for leaving her, his true mate behind but Luke and Tala's story is a good read, it tells us about how Luke managed to escape from the pack they were born into but in order to do so, he had to leave Tala behind, even though he knew they were mates. This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Rogue Wolf by J.K. Harper is part of the Black Mesa Wolves series (I believe book 9). This is Luke and Tala's story. I enjoyed the read, but thought it needed more... I found this a mellow read with lots of character(s) introspection. Luke and Tala are from the same corrupted pack. Through a series of circumstances and misunderstandings they were separated and then reunited. Can love survive lies, mistrust, betrayal and danger? This read takes you through their emotions right up to the moment when all their darkest fears are realized... A great addition to the Black Mesa Wolves series.

Wolf Shifter Romance Series book eleven in the Black Mesa Wolves series a well written story that kept me turning pages. I was not putting this down until I finished it. ARC Review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Wow awesome story tala mingan goes to the black mesa pack after being on the run from her abusive pack after her mate left her behind .now she sees luke Rawlins again .
Luke and Tala were from the same, cruel pack in Canada. Luke was able to escape but had to leave Tala behind. She is understandably upset. They must work through their differences while under the constant threat of attack from their old pack.
Captivated my attention instantly, leaving me no other choice but to devour in one sitting... I simply loved this story and cannot wait to see what comes next in this series...
This is the last in a fantastic series and also the most savage ..old friends are reunited as are old enemies so expect explosive action, treachery and a lot of grovelling and apologising needing to happen . All the loose strings are finally tied together in this story , some revenge is achieved and some shocks are waiting but once you start to read nothing else will get done until the last page is turned
