You are not special. You are not unique. You are nothing more than a Shadow of the Seraph, easily forgotten and instantly replaced.
Fresh off their dramatic escape from Talinus Station, Dorian and his new companions—the two sexy thieves who kidnapped him from his own home—are finally free of the Echo’s control. But a deeply disturbing mystery now hangs over the group after the discovery of the Shadows, identical women who all share Kaya’s face. While she desperately searches for answers about her true identity, Dorian must confront his own destiny as a Seraphim Shaper. His powers may be the key to restoring the Dominion to its former glory, and the Widow isn’t about to let him escape without a fight…
Harbinger is the second installment in the Shadow of the Seraph trilogy, an action-packed, space opera harem adventure in the spirit of Firefly, Star Wars, X-Men, and other pulp sci-fi classics—just with a lot more sex!
Content Warning: this book contains several explicit male-female scenes as well as a female-female scene.
Publisher’s Note: This story is based on Sarah Hawke’s existing Seraph Universe. While it is meant to be accessible to old and new readers, you can easily catch up on her previous work with Wings of the Seraph: The Complete Series
Sarah Hawke is a prolific writer of science fiction and fantasy in multiple genres, including erotica, harem, and bondage. Her books are known for their intricate world-building, twisting plots, and fleshed-out characters—and of course their many intense, steamy sex scenes.
If you are interested in "pure" traditional harem stories, The Lost Fleet is the perfect place to start! Wings of the Seraph is a shorter, older series but also hits most of the traditional harem notes. Shadow of the Seraph features a rotating male and female pov with some F-F scenes involving temporary futanari, so avoid that unless it is your jam!
Her fantasy universe features many types of erotica stories involving bondage (Elf Slave, all the Spider Queen books) and non-traditional harems (The Amazon's Pledge, The Amazon's Vengeance). She also has two ongoing fantasy erotica series with intense action and multiple points of view, War of the White Throne and The Blade of Highwind.
Shadow of The Seraph: Harbinger By Sarah Hawke, is a erotic harem sci-fi adventure novel set within her original “Seraph” sci-fi universe, and the second novel in her “Shadow Of The Seraph” series.
This book didn't disappoint. I wasn't sure how Sarah Hawke would surpass "Shadow of the Seraph" after the bombshell she dropped at the end of it, but she found a way!
The story continues to focus on Kaya a shapeshifting human clone and Mysha a alien tech specialist and their new crew member Dorian Sarir a young man with mysterious powers. Fresh from their escape from the Talinus Station. This new band on rebel outlaws finds themselves on the run from a mysterious hunter. While also trying to solve the mystery Kaya’s shadowy past.
It's a smooth read, the characters are compelling, and the world has enough detail to draw you in without bogging you down. I realize I say that about a lot of her books, but that's because it holds true in, and it sets them apart. The sex was hot, yet the story wasn't secondary to it. That's another thing I often say about these type of books: there's an epic story to go with the sex. Last but not least, it's definitely gone through an editing process. This is a polished, well-written book.
Author Sarah Kawke continues to write a tense, steamy, action-packed sci-fi world told in a voice that flows smoothly from the first page to the last. Despite the less than full-novel length, it feels packed. It keeps its covenant with the reader by resolving a central arc, and it definitely leaves you wanting a sequel.
I was impressed by how much sympathy I felt for these characters. The new antagonist that came into the story is anything but simple, and we got to learn things about the protagonists' pasts that added to their depth. I'm really looking forward to seeing how these characters continue to develop in the next book.
In short, this story is epic and absolutely worth reading. If you don't, you're missing out.
This series is closer to reverse harem or triangle than harem. Two quasi-futa and Dorian (who is tacked onto an existing relationship). The series is dark and sleazy.
"So in other words, you cheated and lied about what happened in order to impress me with your abilities," Kaya said. "I approve." He blinked. "You, uh...you aren't upset that I lied about this?" "I'm a shapeshifting con-artist," she replied matter-of-factly. "Honesty is for losers. Frankly, I'm just annoyed that I didn't figure it out on my own. Well done."
Setting: Hawke only continues to build on the impressive world building established in the previous works. In this volume we learn more about the Spider, the Shadows, and what it all might mean on a bigger picture scale.
Characters: Kaya: Kaya is deeply torn between a desperate need for answers and a desire to keep her love Mysha and their new friend Dorian safe.
Mysha: Mysha’s idealism has gone nowhere but she’s pragmatic enough to let it take a backseat at the moment. She is understanding of Kaya’s desperation for answers but is slightly more interested in the lot of them not getting hunted down, experimented on, and no doubt murdered.
Dorian: Dorian is unsure of what it is he wants now, other than to continue winding up in bed with Kaya of course. His shot at connecting with the rebels ended in utter failure and he is now somewhat dubious of his companion AI. He definitely doesn’t want to be a science experiment but he’s not sure what his powers mean to the greater scale of things and whether or not he should embrace the same ideals as Mysha.
Plot: Kaya is still reeling from the discovery that she is apparently a clone of some now dead girl and that she is furthermore not the only such clone. Understandably, she wants answers, while it is definitely dangerous to get them, she simply can’t go run and hide without them despite the fact that running and hiding is precisely what the crew should be doing.
While this is going on we get a second plot thread of one of Kaya’s other clones that has been tasked with the job of hunting down the trio and retrieving Dorian alive, Kaya and Mysha’s survival is rather less important and our hunter is dead set on putting Kaya into the dirt.
My Thoughts: Hawke seems set out to bury the idea that any erotic content in a story must mean that the story is poorly written and the plot is just a series of excuses between the steamy moments.
The world building and plot here are both done incredibly well. The idea of the Spider and the Shadows and what exactly is going on with all of that is just fundamentally a really cool idea to base a story off of.
A shadowy and clearly morally unscrupulous organization is catputring, experimenting on, and apparently creating all the different kinds of psychics for some unknown purpose which will likely have intergalactic consequences. There’s all this interplay on what that might mean because this very organization is supposed to be working with the empire to hunt down these theoretically dangerous individuals. What is their actual goal then? Does the empire know about this or are they being played for fools?
We put this group up against our trio who are all believable in their own different ways and they’re just doing the best they can with the very unfortunate situation they have found themselves in. The relationship between Kaya and Mysha really feels like a genuine and caring relationship that has been through some very rough times and they both really love each other.
This is a little bit less action heavy than the first story but it’s still a quick read that encourages you to keep going every step of the way. Hawke is clearly a talented writer working on a genuinely good sci-fi series that just happens to have people take their clothes off occasionally.
I can't get enough of these books. The way they connect with each other is so interesting. Definitely looking forward to the next one. I can't wait for these characters to finally meet up.
Great continuation of the series. I enjoyed the development of the MCs of this book series. No over the top action with plenty of time spent of the characters.
