A Soft Place to Land tells the story of foster care from the inside out. You will be immersed in the true, heart-wrenching stories of 15 foster children and one foster family as together they navigate the complexities of an imperfect system.
RJ Klein has struck the perfect balance with her book. She succinctly and intelligently describes foster care, the love, the success and failures of the system, and the children who are helped and harmed by the systems convoluted safeties and pitfalls. This book should be required reading for all well intentioned law makers and politicians. It's fair, balanced, emotional and portrays very accurately the journey of a foster parent. I say this as a foster parent. A great read!
This book encapsulates one nuclear family's journey through 5 years of accepting placements. I highly recommend reading it if you work with kids/families in foster care. Or, (obviously) if you are interested in providing foster care.
I love when an author shares honest insight to a reality that most people don't know about. RJ Klein does this in a way that highlights many challenges faced by children and caregivers within the foster care system but in a way that that doesn't condemn the system as a whole. She also shares heartwarming outcomes of many of the children who hold a forever place in her heart and in most cases found the ability to thrive when given the support they need. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us and I hope you are able to continue making a difference in the lives of children who others before you gave up on.
Fascinating reading. After reading many fostering memoirs by English carers Maggie Hartley, Cathy Glass, Rosie Lewis, Louise Allen, Angela Hart, and Casey Watson I was thrilled to come upon this. Ms Klein has such interesting stories to tell I only wish they were longer. Thank you for your fostering Ms Klein!
Interesting snap shot and insight into fostering and the system. The foster carer in this book has a lovely family who embrace fostering just as much as she does. It's really the family who fosters!
