Another sizzling firefighter romance from New York Times bestselling author Skye Jordan.

I'm taking a break from women. I've been lied to once too often, and I'm over it.
Then Isabel, my best friend's little sister, blows into town without notice, bringing the past with her. Her secret past.

From the moment she crashes poker night and hustles the whole firehouse out of a couple hundred bucks, I know she's not telling the truth about why she's here.

Lies have influenced my entire life. They've also torn my world apart too many times already.

But by the time the truth comes out, she's tangled around my heart like barbed wire, and there's no way out unscathed.

I love me a sizzling firefighter romance and this one hit the spot just right.

Logan is the quintessential nice guy but he's far from perfect. Years ago he was Isabel's brother's best friend and for one night they were something else entirely. But then Isabel left to chase her dreams and left everything behind. Their ties were tight back then. Isabel was also best friends with Logan's younger sister. Until she left town and everyone else behind.

Now she's back and she's hiding something, including the illusion of her perfect life which took a turn somewhere while chasing her dreams in the concrete jungle of New York. Her stopover in the small town is temporary but it doesn't take long for the chemistry that always brewed between her and Logan to rear its head and for her to start falling in love with the town and the new citizens that she didn't know when she left as a teen.

While I totally understood Isabel's issues from her past and everything she's dealing with now, I have to say Logan frustrated me. Yes he has a history himself but his hangups were a bit extreme at times for what they were in my opinion. I was also beyond frustrated with Tucker and his immaturity though I am looking forward to seeing his inevitable fall an the playboy get his.

This was a sweet and steamy romance. While I loved the secondary characters, two in particular stole the show; the cussing parrot and the cute and trouble making puppy. Can't wait for the next one in the series!

This is a Romance, and this is the second book in the Forged in Fire series. I have read and review the first book in this series. The main characters in this book are draw to each other, but they are dealing with over their own stuff. I found this book to do steamy at times. I really loved the ending of this book. I also loved the firehouse/firefighters parts. I love all the firefighters, and I love that they are all really close to each other. I found some parts of this book made me laugh, parts where steamy, and parts was drama, so you get a little of everything. I have to say that this book pull me into the story within the first couple of chapters, and I could not put it down at all. I will be picking up the next book in the series. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Cygnet Books) or author (Skye Jordan) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

ARC received for review

Logan and Isabel were friends as children/teenagers and a little bit more. She left for college under a cloud of distrust towards Logan's sister. She back and running from someone. They reconnect (and it's hot) and then what's she's running from throws a wrench into their relationship. Of course, everything works out in the end. I loved how the fire fighters kept collecting creatures. There are several more guys to get HEAs.

I swear, Logan and Tucker both made me SO angry a few times along the way in this book. Tucker was just immature, selfish, and stupid, but I’m also sure that he’ll be getting his comeuppance soon enough. As for Logan, he was quite judgmental and quick to assume the worst. And while he definitely had the experience with nasty to make it easier for him to jump to the wrong conclusion, he wore blinders that were almost impossible to remove for a while.

As for Isabel, I was uncertain at first. But then I saw how she wore her heart on her sleeve, how she wasn’t afraid of any type of work or task, and how she truly got joy from helping others. I wound up feeling angry when she was sad, happy when she found some confidence, and elated when she told someone where to shove it! As much as this was a story about Isabel and Logan finding their way to forever, it was so much more a journey for Isabel to remember just how much she’s worth and why she shouldn’t settle just to make someone else happy.

I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next installment in this series.

Another great addition to this firefighter series!

Smoke & Mirrors is the story of Logan and Isabel. Isabel is trying to get back on her feet but not without some of what the title implies - smoke and mirrors. We all know what is portrayed on social media is never what it seems and this rings true in this story as well. Logan has been burned in the worst way by both family and girlfriends past so he is constantly second guessing everything about Isabel being back in his life. It makes these characters relatable and makes their trust hard won. These childhood friends deserve their second chance and I enjoyed their story! Looking forward to more stories from this group and their animals they can't help but rescue!

Smoke & Mirrors the second book in Ms Jordan's Forged in Fire series was a great story. That grabbed me early on, thanks not only to the small-town setting, and the community of firefighters and their families, but the characters themselves, especially the main two Logan and Isabel, who, although haven't seen each other in ten years are old friends. Yet, they have plenty of issues not just in the present, but from the past too; and that made this story hard to put down and really enjoyable to read.

And with the perfect amount of humour, drama and steam. Not to mention a lot of attention to what working in a firehouse is really like. Smoke & Mirrors was a delightfully entertaining and well-written romance, and I look forward to reading more from the series in the future.

Would recommend.

(Dual POVs)

Since I've read a handful of books from Skye, I'm starting to realize that she often has her books take place over a short time span, like a week or two, and this one falls into that category as well. Though it is a short time span, this isn't an insta-love story because Isabel and Logan have history! Not only is Logan the best friend to Isabel's brother but Isabel and Logan made a pact when they were teenagers that they ended up keeping and following through with!

After hearing about the manipulation Logan went through in Flashpoint, I was dying to know more about his story and was hoping he could find the love that he deserved. I loved getting to know Logan and finding out that he was a quiet, broody, and protective hero! Perfect combination if you ask me! I enjoyed the way Isabel was a Jill of all trades and it warmed my heart how she was willing to help so many people with her broad set of skills and big heart. I was so happy that she was finally able to feel some of that love and support in return after living in the cut throat fashion industry for years.

I found it absolutely hilarious how the firehouse is slowly, but steadily gaining an array of pets, with the kittens, Master and Bates, coming along in the first book in the series, and a puppy and a parrot in this book! I need more about Royal and his new bird Dolly!

Favorite Quote:
This man isn't any more the guy I knew in high school than I am the woman he knew. Yet we still fit like puzzle pieces, and instead of scaring me, it thrills me. -Isabel

Received an ARC from the author

Thank you for this ARC! I needed this read. Small town. Second chance. Hot firefighter action. Cute puppy adoption. The chemistry between these two characters was incredible- they were black and white, but they fit so well in the end! The beginning is so mysterious on the leading lady's part.... I was craving to find out what happened to her and how it shaped her to be the person she ended up being. Gimme more of this series!

It's official, I'm obsessed with firefighter romances! And this series! I swear every time I read a book in this series, all I want is to go read more firefighter romances. It's a fact.

This second book in the Forged by Fire series is about Logan and Isabel, Tucker's sister who had been living in New York. These two have a history and Isabel used to be bestfriends with Logan's sister too. Their past is complex and Isabel is still carrying a lot of guilt over what happened all those years ago when she left town.

You could say that this one is a touch emotional, at least when it comes to Isabel and her past, present, and doubt in herself. Which made it more special to read everything she accomplishes in all aspects of her life during this book. I loved to see her growth.

Logan, wow, I wasn't expecting to love him so much or for him to be this sweet of a guy but he really was a gem. I just loved the fact that he took all animals in, a book is always a bit better when a puppy is involved ahah. I loved that he immediately wanted to help Isabel and to find out what had happened. He could see that something big had happened but, even with all his worrying and curiosity, he let her take the lead and open up when she was ready.

These two were just really sweet with each other. I loved that there was a friendship as their foundation and the affection these two had for each other was clear from the start. I love how they stood up for each other and just wanted the other to succeed in whatever they were doing. I stan that kind of friendship and relationship.

There were many adorable factors in this story and I enjoyed it immensely and did not want to put it down for a second. I'm already ready for more! I want so many of the other firefighters to get their own story but I think we're only getting one more, Tucker, which I'm curious about. This book did not make me like him much to be honest but that second chance romance potential has me wanting his book too.

From the moment I picked up this book, I knew that I would enjoy the story. Two characters who had a shared past with unresolved issues, a second chance romance, a bit of humor and firefighters.

Isabel and Logan were interesting. Logan was not one for lies and he picked up that Isabel wasn’t telling the complete truth. God, he loved her when they were young but how does he trust her after her disappearing act and the way she is acting now? And Isabel knows she will have to come clean sooner rather than later but has no idea how to tell everyone that her life after leaving Hood River was nothing but Smoke and Mirrors? She loved Logan and loves him again now. But, will he accept her for who she really is? As her past comes barreling in, she has no choice but to come clean and hope that Logan will be there in the end.

I truly enjoyed this story. It showed that the truth is always better than hiding behind the lies. It also showed that dreams may not be what exactly you thought they needed to be. Shoot for the moon but sometimes the stars may be shining a brighter light and give you more satisfaction than that moon ever could give you. And, the love between Logan and Isabel, the chemistry, shined through even brighter than the moon. Skye Jordan really gave us two broken characters that fit together to make a whole. She surrounded them with characters that enhanced the story and brought humor into what could have just been a plain old romance

Isabel rolls into town on her very last dime. Scammed by her ex-boyfriend and living a lie for years she's back in her hometown. Her life a mess. Logan's sister Maya was Isabel's best friend. That friendship ended years ago when Isabel left town and cut ties. Logan's been burned before and trust is a serious issue for him. He's always been attracted to Isabel and her being back brings out those feeling but he senses she's hiding something and he'd be right. I like Isabel and Logan but they drove me nuts at time. Isabel didn't out and out lie but she omitted a lot and distracted to avoid. Logan had reason to not trust her completely. Logan had been taken advantage of before but come one you can't paint every women you meet with the same brush. Took a while to get their act together but watching it happen was enjoyable. Both were good people but needed to communicate and open up with each other. There was the right amount of humor to balance out the drama. I did not read book one in this series but you don't have to to enjoy this book. It definitely stands on it own. Isabel's brother Tucker is a bit of a little shit so we'll see if he soon get some growing up time in a future book. I look forward to that. I haven't read a Skye Jordan book in a while and this was definitely a great book to dive back in with.

Really enjoying this sexy new firefighter Forged in Fire series! Skye Jordan always delivers consuming, quick reads with a great balance of heart and heat, laced with a smidge of humor and plenty of feels. Loved watching Logan and Isabel try to find their way in this second chance story between two childhood friends, figuring out how to navigate a world full of smoke and mirrors.

Logan is distrustful, understandably given how he’s been burned in the past by those who should love him. At first, he’s quite judgmental, frequently second guessing Isabel and her intentions and really creating a push-pull obstacle between them since often assumes the worst in others. Isabel really spoke to me- she’s full of heart, a stoic giver. Her character arc felt the most gratifying to me- watching her find her voice and accepting her own value and prioritizing her own needs. They had a sweet and steamy chemistry, and by the end I was really rooting for them both. And, still loving our little family of firehouse inhabitants, the people and pets that find their way into this close knit group of firefighters.

Looking forward to more from this series!

Well, even though I Know Skye Jordan writes great stories, I still wasn’t prepared for how well I enjoyed this one. It is the second book in her Forged in Fired Series but I haven’t read that one yet……a mistake as I plan to read it next! The series takes place in a small town near Portland Oregon revolving around a fire station and three main alpha firemen, Tucker, Logan, and Cole. Isabel is Tucker’s sister, a dress designer from NYC who is running away from the city, but doesn’t want “the boys” to know. She is broke and depressed about her situation, but has such a big heart, she starts helping everywhere in this area. Logan and she dance around each other, neither one really dealing with their trust issues well. This makes for an interesting conflict and I was Isabel all the way. I wasn’t sure Logan was ever going to buck up to be the right one for Isabel. The secondary characters were fun, and I loved how the fire station kept adopting pets. This was a fun read for me and now I need to read the first book to get caught up.

Isabel has been through a lot in her pursuit of a career in fashion. Considering she burned most of the bridges to her past life to do it, she finds herself returning home expecting the worst. But her no-bull crap attitude and eagerness to make amends, opens doors and avenues she never expected. Sure she has secrets but she’s always handled things on her own so it’s tough letting in anyone. Logan of course has always been able to read her like an open book so it doesn’t take long for him to get under her skin and peel back those layers.

When everything is finally out in the open, Isabel realized that the only people that matter are the ones who will accept her for who and what she is. And that she needs to be brave enough to accept that not everyone will be what she needs them to be.

On a side note, Tucker is the worst brother ever!

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”

I'm really enjoying the Forged in Fire series. This is the second book in the series. This series is my first firefighter romance. In book one, Flashpoint, we meet Logan and are able to learn in S&M the reason behind why he's so guarded and broody. I really loved his character! I also enjoyed how there was a little more firefighting action than in the previous book. Isabel is the sister to Logan's best friend. They both made a pact when they were in high school and stuck to it. Now she's taking a break from the grueling world of fashion and is back in her hometown. I love how Isabel knew a little bit of everything and how she was so willing to step in and help those around her when they were in need. I also loved that she was able to find something she really loved to do for a living and that it still involved fashion. This was a cute slow burn second chance romance!

Book Two in the Forged in Fire series, it can stand alone.

Isabel abruptly left town years ago, but she is running again has returned. She severed many important friendships years ago. Logan was Isabel’s friend as children and into their teens; her leaving and other events have him a little distrustful of women.

This author writes strong females, and Isabel is no exception. We get a lot of Isabel’s journey, who she was, and who she becomes. She is not afraid to do anything and always ready to help. Will Isabel and Logan get their second chance? Will Logan figure out what she is hiding?

As with all of her books, great characters, and a great story, my favorite part is the puppy! I always read her too quickly, and now we wait for the next book in the series.

Thank You to NetGalley and Cygnet books for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

Isabel has returned to the town she fled years prior. Her life may seem like it is perfect and she has everything going for her, but it is all smoke and mirrors. Logan is a firefighter, has known Isabel for years, works with her brother and has been burned by women in his past.

I liked Isabel. She wasn’t afraid to take on a task and had no problem with getting her hands a little dirty. She loves helping people and you can feel the joy that brings her coming off the pages. I loved seeing her growth and her confidence grow throughout the course of the story. Logan was frustrating at times, but I couldn’t help but love him. He was letting the past get in the way of his future, but he was also protecting himself. However, he is caring and protective.

The chemistry between Logan and Isabel is hot enough you’ll need to call the fire department and I couldn’t get enough of the two of them together.

I can’t wait for more of this series and getting to know more about the men in the firehouse.

If you’re looking for a friends to lovers romance this is one to check out.

I loved this book. I was so caught up in reading it, that I lost track of time. I felt so sorry that Isobel had to leave New York after failing to make it in the fashion world the way she wanted. No one wants to admit their failures, so she doesn’t tell her brother Tucker, her good friend Logan, or anyone else in their small town what a wreck her life was. Isobel and Logan had a history together and I was glad to see him help her out. Isobel used to be close to Logan’s sister too, but something happened when they graduated that left them not talking to each other. Isobel nor Logan had good parents for examples on how to be as an adult. Logan was really messed up because of his mother and all the lies told. This becomes a touchy situation between Isobel and Logan. I enjoyed watching the two become closer even though that was not what neither had wanted. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and cola review.

Smoke & Mirrors is an emotional story of two people from troubled childhoods who grew up together but haven’t stayed in touch as adults. Both are resilient but have coping mechanisms that keep them from truly letting others in. Can they open up and trust each other?

Isabel and Logan are flawed but relatable characters that I found myself rooting for. They have sizzling chemistry, friendship, and undeniable draw to each other. Both have good hearts and good intentions; they deserve a chance at true happiness together.

I love this firefighter community. The women welcomed Isabel with open arms, and she fit in like a missing piece of a puzzle. The men look out for each other and their loved ones.

I would definitely recommend this emotional firefighter romance.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and options are my own.

Sad to say I wasn't as obsessed with this one as I was with book one. This one left me slightly disappointed. In this book we follow Logan and Isabel. I thought both of them were hard for me to connect with and some of the things they did really bothered me. I’m understanding of both Logan and Isabel’s past issues but I thought they were a bit extreme at times. I didn't understand why Isabel had to hide behind the myth of her success the way she did and I found that Logan was unnecessarily harsh and judgmental when it came to Isabel. I just wasn't totally in love with this book and that makes me so sad since I loved book one.

An illusion delivers the real deal. It's easy to get lost in the suspense of Smoke & Mirrors. Logan and Isabel take emotions on an adventure that's shrouded in mystery and laced with desire. A maze of unpredictability becomes a temptingly dangerous romance. Sizzling attraction, never-ending twists and explosive chemistry. A rapturous game of the heart that is a thriller with a capital T.

You know it's going to be a great day when you get mail from Skye! I dropped my current read so I could read this one and I devoured it in one sitting. Logan is total perfection! And this cover.... Wow!

Smoking hot firefighter ✔ Animal lover ✔ Heart of gold ✔ Logan will probably be my favorite for being an animal lover! I mean... a puppy can only make a man even more irresistible!

Book 2 in the Forged in Fire series brings in Logan and Isabel. The chemistry between them is great! Isabel is cheeky and independent. Puts all the big bad firefighters in their places and tells things exactly how she sees them. Just don't ask about the last 5 years. Breaking into the fashion world hasn't been kind to her. She's back home to lick her wounds and figure out where she wants to go from here. But then her old world shows up on her doorstep and she knows it's all about to come crumbling down.

Smoke & Mirrors is the second book in Skye Jordan's Forged in Fire series, but it's not only the first book in the series I've read, it's also the first book I've read by this author, and while the book works just fine as a standalone, I was somewhat shocked by all the 4- and 5-star reviews posted, because for me, it was simply a passably interesting read, which is why I'm only giving it a 3-star rating.

I love a good second chance romance, and I love books about firefighters and other first responders, but although the fire company in this novel really was one, they didn't do much firefighting--the most entertaining scene that they had to deal with was rescuing a foul-mouthed gray parrot up in a tree--but as far as the grit and business of firefighting, that aspect of the novel really fell by the wayside.

The first main character we meet is, Isabel, who left her small town in Oregon years ago, when she stole her best friend's scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, graduated and then tried to make it as a fashion designer in NY, as cutthroat and backstabbing an industry as one can find, and she failed at numerous assistant jobs, finally linking up with a man who promised her a decent job, was controlling and abusive to her, and when she broke up with him, she lost not only her job, but all her savings, since he managed to drain them all from her accounts. She's returning to her small town with less than a dollar to her name--the only thing of value she has left is her ex-boyfriend's antique firearm, which she'd happily trade for the money he stole from her. However, her social media accounts, and reports to her brother, Tucker, also a firefighter in her hometown, are bogus, showing her as a busy and successful fashion designer, when her major accomplishment has been as a window dresser, all while holding more than a couple of menial jobs waitressing and bartending in order to pay the rent on her tiny NY apartment.

Logan is a firefighter, and when he and Isabel were high school seniors, they made a pact to relieve each other of their virginity before leaving their small town for college. He and Isabel are certainly hot for each other, but Logan, who was abused as child by his also abused, alcoholic mother and a succession of the abusive men in her life, has major issues with being lied to--quite a stumbling block with Isabel, who is dead set against anyone in her home town finding out that she's returning home because she's failed at her main career goal, has had a series of bad relationships with men, and is truly returning home with her tail between her legs. Logan has a few stumbling blocks of his own, an ex who wants him back, and a real problem with liars. Although Isabel hasn't actually lied to him, she's omitted a good deal of the facts about her life and career in New York, which to Logan is a good as lying.

While I enjoyed the small town vibe in this novel, and appreciated Isabel's work ethic, her kindness and selflessness when it came to helping others in need, and her willingness to pitch in with no thought of ever being paid, I failed to see the advantage of her hiding behind the myth of her success. While I also liked Logan and the adorable pup he rescued, I found his relationship standards rather harsh and judgmental when it came to his expectation of Isabel telling him every detail of her whole sad tale of failure at her chosen career. Aside from that issue, which turned their sex-only affair into an on-again, off-again relationship, marred by slights and disagreements, not much of anything else happens in this novel, and I became rather bored with both main characters ongoing issues and the lack of much in the way of forward momentum in either this novel or the relationship between its main characters.

Smoke & Mirrors isn't a bad read, but in this reviewers opinion, it's not a great one either. I was also rather put off by the sheer amount of profanity used in this novel--it was funny coming from the foul-mouthed parrot, but far less amusing when it came from the main characters. While there is the expected HEA ending, it wasn't much of one, and it happens in the last two pages of this novel, giving short shrift to the future of this couple.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

Each other’s everything?

In book two of the Forged in fire series we meet Logan and Isabel. They have a past as friends that had a one time benefit. She’s been gone for 8 years and let’s just say things may appear differently than reality. He’s a truly nice guy who always looks out for everyone. However he’s been burned by an ex and getting involved doesn’t seem worth the trouble. But when Isabel shows up to the Cockloft bar he owns with her brother and their best friends and fellow firefighters he knows there’s more to her story.

Isabel knows Logan is a human lie detector but as long as she skirts the truth she should be ok....Right?

The writing is flawless, and the words are so captivating, the plot had so many twists and turns and none that I was expecting, and many shocking moments. I really enjoyed this book and it kept me engrossed throughout. I really loved the characters and the way they interacted with each other. This is a fun, hot, romantic must read book and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

Authors Blurb: I'm taking a break from women.

This book has everything I love in a book. Then you add that it's beautifully written and believable. It is easily a five star read. Written in dual POV my personal favorite this story flows so incredibly well that the next thing you know your 80% into the book and loving every second of it. The believable way the characters interact is perfect. Run, Hop, Jump or use your (1 click) finger to do whatever you have to do and get this amazing book. It'll break your heart, you'll want to scream with frustration and it'll let you discover that love just might conquer all. The chemistry is steamy and sweet and oh so romantic.

Thanks Netgally for letting me read and review.📚💕

Isabel has been gone from her hometown for a long time. She left after high school to take a scholarship at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. The scholarship should have gone to someone else - but Isabel snatched it up and ran with it. Since then - she's had success - but a lot of failure. Through it all her brother and her hometown have been fully in the dark about those failures and believe she is living the high life. When she shows back up at home with 47 cents in her pocket- and a lot of lies to deal with - things get complicated very quickly.

Logan has some major trust issues after his parents abusive relationship and the subsequent murder of his mother. He recently went through a terrible experience where a hook-up faked a pregnancy in an effort to get Logan to marry her (who does that???). As a result - more lies are a serious trigger for him.

Isabel is not ready to share her failures with anyone - and definitely not with Logan. She never precisely lies to him - but she definitely doesn't tell the truth either. Logan knows she isn't sharing everything with him and this is definitely an issue - but he doesn't press on it because he is convinced she is going to leave if he does.

This book really does focus strongly on forgiveness and finding acceptance within yourself. Both Isabel and Logan need to find both - for themselves and each other before the book is over. And that doesn't come easily. Overall, Isabel and Logan were a really tough couple for me. They gave me such complicated feelings. I could see both sides of their issues - but I am not sure I really felt

In this second installment of this series we get Logan and Isabel's story. Logan a man with trust issues and a heartbreaking family past and a big heart, willing to help those he cares about in need reconnects with Isabel. Isabel, Tucker's sister, left 10 years ago only to return when her life has hit rock bottom and she needs to regroup. She returns home but needs to face those who love her with the truth that she was not as successful in the NYC fashion industry as she made herself out to be while also hiding the fact that she has an ex that is looking for her and a past with Logan that she is not sure that she wants to reconnect with. No matter how much they fight against it the pair find themselves reconnecting their past and entering what starts as a physical relationship that builds into more.

The characters in this book were well written and I enjoyed the return of the characters from the first book of the series. I thought that there was not really a resolution with Logan's past girlfriend who deceived him and clearly wanted him back. He also needed to work through his trust issues from his past better but overall, I enjoyed him as a character. Isabel to be honest was not my favorite. Where it is clear that she did not want anyone to know that she did not fulfill her dreams in NYC and kept that from her brother, she knows what it is like to have someone not believe her (her mother when the mother's boyfriend made advances on her) and yet she still went forth and deceived those around her with her half truths and her misleading them as to her success and reasons for returning home. I did like that she had resolution to her past mistakes but it felt a little too easy and there was no real resolution to the ex that was pursuing her- in other words the entire ex showing up and then the encounter resolving like it did was a bit hard to believe with how the ex was made out through out the book.

Overall, this was a good read that I did enjoy. I am curious as to who will have the next installment of this series and I can not wait to see where it goes next.

Awesome, powerful love story with chemistry, small town welcome, humor and fabulous dialogue. Skye Jordan is the queen of bringing love and healing to broken people. I ate this book up from cover to cover! It's full of protective, wise cracking firemen and a town full of friendly people. Best of all it's set in Hood River Oregon, my home state!

Isabel is a broken woman. She arrives in Hood River after driving from New York not telling her brother Tucker she's coming. She has $0.48 in her pocket and nothing to show for her striving to make it in the fashion design world in New York after graduating in the top 10% of her class. She hasn't been honest with anyone back home about her failure and needs some time to figure out her life. Her brother's best friend Logan Roberts, whom they grew up with, gives her a place to stay in his motel he's renovating since Tucker is having a sleep-over with his latest lady bird. Isabel finds her brother's friends and the town welcoming and she's willing to work to get herself back on her feet. Things get complicated with Logan fast as they have history, a lets not be virgins when we leave after graduation hook-up.

Logan too has a wounded heart although he keeps it locked tightly away. He's recovering from a manipulative lying girlfriend and an abusive dad that ultimately killed his mom. He hates liars and has major trust issues because of his past. With his history with Isabel he knows she's hiding something but can't get her to come clean to him as to what it is. The two have chemistry in spades and he's drawn to her giving and generous heart. She finally tells him about what the deal is with the ex boyfriend but doesn't tell him of her failure professionally. She's led everyone to believe she's a somebody in New York. Eventually her ex boyfriend finally tracks her down and all the secrets come out causing each of them to search deep to find forgiveness of their own past mistakes and judgments of others.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received and advanced copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.

I haven’t read the first book in the series, something I will definitely rectify, but i think this can definitely be read as a standalone.

Isabel fled home, trying to escape her mother’s abusive boyfriend and managed to fracture her relationship with her best friend Maya at the same time. Following successive dead end jobs in her attempt to make it in the design world she heads home with her car load of possessions with no money, no job and an ex who is hounding her.

Isabel doesn’t expect to find community spirit or friendships so quickly in the small town of Hood Rover and she doesn’t expect to find romance in the arms of her once close friend who she lost her virginity to. All of these things make her question whether she should stay however she is still seeking validation of her worth. Isabel and Logan both have issues from their lives that they use against the other and push each other away. Through the influence of friends both start to reevaluate their lives and see their own worth and the worth in what they have.

This book had heat and not just in the form of the delicious sounding firefighters. The chemistry between Logan and Isabel is hot! There are also some humorous moments mostly related to the fire station or is it an animal centre with all the pets that the fire fighters adopt. I am looking forward to Tucker meeting his match as he seems like a sweetheart but also a bit of a cocky player.

I read this book in less than 24 hours and can’t wait to read about more of the firefighters in this series.
