Telekinesis and an imaginary cat friend?

by Barbara Kelley

Mackie Fleming is a 42 year old woman who loses her job and finds a dying neighbor friend all in one day. The story goes back and forth through time from when Mackie was a little girl to the current time. During the past, the season is summer, and during the present, the season is close to Christmastime. Mackie has to come to grips with powers she has had since childhood, but did not realize they were powers, an finding out who killed her elderly neighbor friend before she becomes the killer's next victim. This is book 1 in a new series by J. A. Whiting and May Stem mark. I gave it a 5 star rating!

Magic??? No, well, maybe.

This book was well written, easy to read, and interesting. Mackie is an unusual heroine. Middle aged, widowed, curious, intelligent, and friendly. When her friend and neighbor, Joe, is murdered, she decides to try to figure out who the killer was. In the process she inherits a cat, becomes reacquainted with another "cat" from her past, and almost gets herself killed. If this sounds interesting to you, please read this book. I think you will enjoy it as much as I did. Mackie is quite a gal.

Slow start.

I have never read a book from this author that I didn't love, so this is a first for me. The storyline has a good premise but it is very wordy and repetitive. I would've loved to see the paranormal aspects developed further, instead we just get snippets and some of those don't fit the storyline.

Not an enjoyable read

The storyline was interesting but the prose was too choppy for me. It seemed like I was following the main character doing mundane daily tasks that didn't add anything to the story except as filler, didn't add depth to the characters or understanding of plot.

After the intensity of "The Last Green Valley," I needed some light reading ... and this fit the bill. It's a simple "whodunit" with interesting characters and less than 250 pages. The pace is a little slow and in places repetitive ... and the 42-year-old female lead is a little slow in recognizing that she has paranormal powers. But all in all, I found it satisfying.

Crazy cat lady

The characters are so real that I don't want the book to end. The cats are really funny and made the story more fun to read. I really look forward to the next book😀.
