In the late 1640s, the young son of a farmer from Llanrumney in South Wales left home to seek his fortune.Harri Morgan somehow found his way to Jamaica in the Caribbean; how he got to Jamaica is unknown, but this island is where he made his home and grew to love. He became the largest landowner on the island of the time and served as Governor of Jamaica on several occasions; furthermore, he was knighted by the King.Henry Morgan lived in that time known as the Golden Age of Piracy, though if somebody called Henry Morgan him a pirate, he would take great exception. Harry Morgan was privateer or buccaneer; all the raids he organised and led, and there were many, were done with a commission or marque issued by the Governor of Jamaica on behalf of the King. The raids that Henry Morgan led, and where he proved himself as brave and courageous, and an exceptional leader of men, were against the Spanish cities of Portobelo, Maracaibo, Gibraltar and Panama City, and the plunder from these cities was great indeed.These raids made Henry Morgan a legend and how he achieved this folklore status in Jamaica.This work is a condensed version of his life; many books have been written about Henry Morgan, and several films made based on his life and those I used as references gave me a deep insight into not only the life of Henry Morgan but those swashbuckling times called the Golden Age of Piracy.So, for those who like to partake of the occasional glass of rum, during those balmy evenings as you watch the sun setting on your annual vacation to warmer places, alternatively, when you dream of such times, during this period of lockdown and travel restrictions, the rum you might likely be enjoying, may come from a bottle with the image of Captain Morgan on the label. He was not an imaginary character dreamt up by a vast drinks corporation; he existed and lived a life of adventure that we today could only imagine.Cheers!Will Roberts 2021
