Oregon Painters: The First Hundred Years (1859-1959) : Index and Biographical Dictionary

Rate this book
Richly illustrated with color plates of paintings from institutional and private collections as well as black-and-white photographs, this reference guide is the only comprehensive volume on early Oregon painters. Listings for over 500 Oregon artists offer biographical details and note where their work was shown and where it is now held. Additional essays on early art museums and art organizations, art galleries and exhibition spaces, and the Federal Art Projects of the 1930s show how the state created itself artistically.

This is an excellent resource for those interested in the early Oregon painters through those active in 1959. There are biographical entries for 500 painters and 96 color reproductions of their work. Unfortunately the book is no longer in print and apparently there are no plans to reissue or update it. Used copies are available online but can be pricey. My local library system (Multnomah County) has 13 copies, 11 of which circulate.
