This panorama of Cuban art is illustrated with more than 400 reproduction of all types of works, including painting, drawings, posters, photographs, installations, videos and an exceptional collective painting produced in 1967 by about a hundred artists from all over the world. Comprising essays written by twenty experts of all nationalities, this catalogue accompanies the exhibition presented at by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in partnership with the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Fotoeca de Cuba in Havana.
I like it because of the art which is so vivi in color. The photographic history is magnificant. It gives an idea of what the island was during Magoon's, when political and social corruption started, during Machado and his nationalista development projects. Batista came in the background in 1934 and was elected president in 1940. During his regime the mob took control of casinos and other operations on the Island until Fidel Castrol won the revolution. Great book for history fans.
Maybe it is the compulsive beauty of its avant-garde paintings, or the exotic Afro-Cuban motifs, or the translucent light that floods every object on the island, or the plentiful subject matter for photo journalism, but Cuban art is infinitely interesting to any visual art aficionado. This particular book is a collection of chronologically organized but somewhat thematically disjointed essays and full color reproductions of major Cuban artworks. Of particular interest are the rare photography of Walker Evans and the excellent selection of Wifredo Lam's genius paintings.
