Julia Justiss

Julia Justiss grew up breathing the scent of sea air near the colonial town of Annapolis, Maryland, a fact responsible for two of her life-long passions: sailors and history! By age twelve she was a junior tour guide for Historic Annapolis, conducting visitors on walking tours through the city that was a hotbed of revolutionary fervor. (Annapolis hosted its own tea party, dispensing with the cargo aboard the "Peggy Stewart," and was briefly capital of the United States.) She also took tourists through Annapolis's other big attraction, the United States Naval Academy. After so many years of observing future naval officers at P-rade and chapel, it seemed almost inevitable that she eventually married one.

But long before embarking on romantic adventures of her own, she read about them, transporting herself to such favorite venues as ancient Egypt, World War II submarine patrols, the Old South and, of course, Regency England. Soon she was keeping notebooks for jotting down story ideas. From plotting adventures for her first favorite heroine Nancy Drew she went on to write poetry in high school and college, then worked as a business journalist doing speeches, sales promotion material and newsletter articles. After her marriage to a naval lieutenant took her overseas, she wrote the newsletter for the American Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Before leaving Tunis, she fulfilled her first goal: completing a Regency novel.

Children intervened, and not until her husband left the Navy to return to his Texas homeland did she sit down to pen a second novel. The reply to her fan mail letter to a Regency author led her to Romance Writers of America. From the very first meeting, she knew she'd found a home among fellow writers--doubtless the largest group of people outside a mental institution who talk back to the voices in their heads.

Her second goal was achieved the day before her birthday in May, 1998 when Margaret Marbury of Harlequin Historicals offered to buy that second book, the Golden-Heart-Award winning novel that became THE WEDDING GAMBLE. Since then, she has gone on to write fourteen novels, three novellas and an on-line serial, along the way winning or finalling for historical awards from The Golden Quill, the National Reader’s Choice, Romantic Times, and All About Romance’s Favorite Book of the Year.

Julia now inhabits an English Georgian-style house she and her husband built in the East Texas countryside where, if she closes her eyes and ignores the summer thermometer, she can almost imagine she inhabits the landscape of "Pride and Prejudice." In between travelling to visit her three children (a naval officer son stationed in Washington, DC, a textiles and design major daughter who cheers for University of Texas at Austin, and a mechanical engineering major son also at UT Austin) keeping up with her science teacher husband and juggling a part-time day job as a high school French teacher, she pursues her first and dearest love--crafting stories.

To relax, she enjoys watching movies, reading (historical fiction, mystery, suspense) and puttering about in the garden trying to kill off more weeds than flowers.

Gregory is one of the wealthiest men in England. He manages all his father’s business and estates. His father is interested only in his collections of treasures. In fact, his father has become isolated from most of life because of his collections. Gregory’s mother is no longer accepted in society. She is still one of the most beautiful women in the ton, but her past has made her less than welcome at many of society’s events.

Gregory is determined to find a wife who will be able to help him get his mother back to being accepted by the best people.

Gregory has a very strong sense of responsibility to his family. He is a very good man.

While trying to straighten out some of the unpaid bills for his father’s collection, he meets Charis. She is a beautiful woman who is unlike anyone he knows. She is English but has lived most of her life traveling with her father. She has spent much of her time in the Middle East. Charis has learned how to be like a woman from that area. In short, Charis is an unusual woman.

Charis is so unusual that it is evident that she will never be a woman who can help his mother regain her place in society.

Charis and Gregory are immediately attracted to one another. The attraction is so strong that neither one can ignore it. But, Charis is determined to find a wife for Gregory that will be an acceptable woman to the ton. She hopes to find a woman who can help his mother be drawn back into society.

Charis’s father is ill. No matter what she does, it does not seem to help his health improve. Not only is it worrying for her, but it also means their next trip to gather more treasures is continually being postponed. The fact they are staying in London means that Charis and Gregory meet on a regular basis.

This is a very sweet story of two people who are drawn to one another in spite of many difficulties.

Ms Justiss has the ability to create a story populated by people who are warm and charming and very real. This story is no exception.

Although this is third in a series, it works well as a stand alone read. The characters, relatiionships and events are explained fully.

If I had an issue at all, there seemed to be too many words devoted to telling me that Charis moved beautifully. I understood that she was a very graceful young lady. I really did not need to be told quite so often.

This is a lovely story of two good people who find love and affection with one another. It is evident that Charis and Gregory are perfect for one another.

I received this book from the author in the hope I would write an honest review. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are completely my own.

Gregory Lattimer, the eldest son of Baron Vraux, was coming home after being at their main residence. When he left Oxford, his father went into seclusion. He only wanted to deal with his collectibles. No one saw him but the servants who brought him food. Gregory had to take over the
Barony. His father had not given him, a large stack of invoices from his collectibles so he would have to go to the seller.
Charis Dunnfield was the daughter of one of those traders. She was beautiful, accomplished in
languages, and very intelligent. She was English but had been raised in the Ottoman Empire.
Gregory went to their townhouse to see which invoices had not been paid yet. They saw each other
and the attraction was very great.
These were two very nice, kind, and thoughtful people. The stories about Constantinople were wonderful. Her visits to the Harem's and the sweet ladies that lived in them were enlightening.
The warmth and smell of the places she visited you could almost see it or smell it. It was so exotic.
She and Greg were well matched. Since he was mired in England and she in the Near East. They were not good for each other. There is so much going on in the background, I have no idea how they
keep it straight. I enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

In this heartwarming romance, I found that Gregory Lattimer is a rare commodity and one that goes to extraordinary lengths for the people he loves. He is locked into duty, desperately recouping the losses caused by his father's obsession with antiques. Meeting Charis Dunnfield, in an attempt to settle outstanding bills, he is dumbfounded by his attraction to her. Charis is an oddity in England, having been schooled in comportment by her Turkish nanny, and becomes an object of lust on the part of the men and one of scorn by the women. As much as Gregory would like to pursue a relationship with Charis, he knows it would be impossible as any union between them would lessen his mother's chances of being reintroduced to society, and because she is adamant about returning to Turkey to continue assisting her father in business. However, despite the impracticability of a future between them, neither Gregory nor Charis can deny the strong feelings that they have for one another, and because he loves her, Gregory finds a way to give Charis what she most needs. This novel brings to mind the adage, “If you ever want something badly, let it go. If it comes back to you, then it's yours forever. If it doesn't, then it was never yours, to begin with”. I received a copy of this novel as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The Explorer Baroness is the third in the Heirs in Waiting series but can be read as a stand alone. This is a story finding love in the uniqueness of another and the sacrifices one is willing to make in order to keep that love. Gregory Lattimer is running the family estates for his father who lacks focus. When he is handed a pile of bills by a maid, he contacts the supplier to make them right. Charis Dunnfield has traveled the world with her father, finding rare treasures for collectors, but they are currently landlocked in England as her father recovers from an illness. When Greg knocks on her door, there is an instant chemistry but both have reasons for avoiding a relationship with each other. Charis wants to continue to travel and Greg feels he must marry a sedate, connected debutante in order to re-establish the family reputation. As their friendship continues to evolve, they both must discover what they are willing to do to keep the love that is growing. This is a wonderfully written story filled with a range of emotions to entertain and delight the reader until the very last page.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher but all thoughts and feelings are my own.

Gregory Lattimar, eldest son and heir of Baron Vraux, has spent the last dozen years taking care of the estate properties and finances while his father had locked himself in with his jewels and artefacts. Now back in London to deal with this set of books and visit with his mother. When he heard what has happened with the invoices and account records, he has to speak with the main supplier to verify which are still needing to be paid. Gregory also is the last of his group of friends still single. However, he wants to hold off getting married until he can find someone that can also help re-establish his mother in society.

William and Charis Dunnfield, father/daughter collectors of items from Ottoman, Constantinople, Tehran, and Baghdad. Khanjars and Jambiyas as well as jewels; emeralds, diamonds, etc. Having traveled with her parents and then her father after her mother's death. To her home is Constantinople with visits to the other areas. She has been helping with the women who want to sell their jewels and can not have contact with men. William is laid low by an illness so is spending most of his time in bed, leaving Charis to deliver the commissioned pieces from their recent journey.

When Charis opens her door to find Gregory standing there both are stunned for different reasons. When William takes a turn for the worst, Gregory offers one of his estates to them for a possible recovery help.

I do enjoy this author and I so loved this series. Of course Gregory and Charis come from different classes. She is in trade and he is an impoverished aristocrat. They start out helping each other but as the story unfolds they realize the only way to help each other is to be together. A sweet romantic and happy end

East meets West!
A delightful tale of a young woman raised in the Ottoman and yearning to return, falling for a gentleman whose life is firmly rooted in England and his responsibilities there. Loved the characters, the delightful descriptions of Constantinople and female customs, and most especially the sacrifice made by Greg to ensure Charis’ happiness. Recommended read.

This is the last book in the multiple series concerning the family members and friends of Gregory Lattimer. They have all found their happy ever afters, and Greg is left behind. He feels he needs a certain sort of wife, one from a family of spotless reputation. It's not an impossibility, but finding her is tedious. Especially difficult since he's met Charis, an English woman who grew up in Constantinople and point east.
Charis has spent her life traveling with her father in the Middle East, trading for jewels and antiquities that rich men like Greg's father love to collect. That makes her interesting to Greg, but not the sort of woman he thinks he should marry. We all know how those sorts of thoughts turn out. This gem of a book follows the tried and true path to ultimate happiness, both for the characters and the reader. I enjoyed reading the book. My only sorrow is everybody is married now, so the series is finished. Read this book, read the entire set, enjoy the Lattimers and their friends. You will like then too.

Gregory Lattimar doesn't plan to marry for love alone. He wanted a wife with the power to make Society accept his mother back in their fold. His beautiful mother had flaunted the rules and there was a price to pay. When he meets Charis Dunnfield, he's intrigued. The lady is an original. She's active in her father's antique business and has lived in Constantinople. Society will never accept her but Greg will. I liked how he was there to support Charis. They are drawn to each other both physically and intellectually. Unfortunately she didn't have the credentials to be his bride even though they are perfect together. When her father's chronic illness throws Charis's life in disarray, Greg is there for her. I was heartbroken when they parted. I wanted a HEA. Gregory is a amazing hero. I liked Charis for her strength and spirit. Their love is powerful and fierce. They deserve a happy ending. The Explorer Baroness is a wonderful addition to The Heirs in Waiting series.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.

Julia Justiss has done a wonderful job with this series compromising of unique and special characters. Charis is a young lady who is well traveled and trained to assist her father in his antiquities business. She has a sharp wit and is uncompromising about seeking a husband. Gregory is heir to one of the wealthiest Baron’s in the Ton and spends his time managing his father’s properties. They are immediately attracted to each other but spend their time deciding that they would not make a good match. They are unselfish and forthright in their feelings and decisions until they realize that the greatest gift is love.

A Touch of Exotic
Charis Dunnfield, daughter of an antiquities trader, expects to be in London mere weeks to deliver goods to collectors and prepare to return to Constantinople. However, her father becomes too ill to travel. When Greg Lattimar, son of a collector, calls to straighten accounts, the attraction is immediate—and mutual.
Ms. Justiss uses old family scandals and climate contrast to good effect in this pleasurable read.

Will he have to let her go to not change her …

With this third book, the author brings together two people who would probably never have meet if not for a chance incident. They are not star-crossed lovers, nothing impedes an union between themselves except themselves. They feel they are from two different worlds, looking for much opposite things and outside their attraction to one another, nothing seems to be able to bind them together.
Gregory is no rogue nor rake, only a good man who has spend his years since university to survey the family’s business, who wants also to find a way to redeem his mother’s reputation in the eyes of the ton.
So when he first meets the entrancing Miss Dunnfield, he had for a short time expectation of a dalliance until he realized she is a proper miss with a different upbringing. And now he has only a brief period to enjoy her presence before she leaves once more for new adventures.
Charis could have been the perfect ton rose if she had be born and raised on English soil, I stress she roamed the world with her father and is part of his business. London is cold and dirty after the warmth of the Middle East. And while Gregory heats her thoughts and awakens her senses but it is to not be as she will soon go back to her travels. Yet while she is, she is no demure miss, she stands her ground even when false allegations are said about her upbringing.

Gregory is such a sweetheart, a man who is to sacrifice everything for those he cares for, even if it is to his detriment. Charis could not ask for a better kinder more caring man, but will she acknowledge it in time as the clock ticks the end …
A lovely tale of the strength love gives and the price one can pay for the happiness of others.

Gregory Lattimer is eldest son of Baron Vraux, and he’s taken of the family reigns as Baron. His father is still very much alive, but has given up the Barony to pursue his love of artefacts.

Meeting the lovely Charis Dunnfield whilst clearing debts run up by his father, has Gregory at somewhat of a quandary! He’s totally enamoured with the miss, but she’s not the right kind of lady this Baron needs to socialise with, let alone think of courting!

Charis doesn’t worry what the social gossips thinks of her. She happier helping her father run his antiques business anyway! But meeting Gregory has her thinking she could be a little more lady like! But it’s too late anyway,

Friendship is better than nothing right? Well Gregory is totally in the “friend zone” and has to endure as more “suitable” ladies are sent his way to be vetted as the next Baroness!

Third book in this historical romance series, and I like this one the best. It’s easily read without the other two. Nicely written, plot easy to follow, low on angst and two characters you wanted to like and you do. Gregory is not a rake or a rogue, and hard working chap who has taken on the family name and mantle to give his father the chance to enjoy his “hobby”. Charis although a little self centred is a pretty decent young lady. There is a slow-slow-slow burn to this romance, but the plot carries it along quiet nicely, and as I’ve read this author a few time now, I wasn’t expecting fireworks.

So will Gregory and Charis remain friends? Will he watch as she sails away? Or will he grab what he so desperately desires?

Gregory Lattimer eldest son of Baron Vraux has taken over the management of the barony as his father is consumed with his collection of artefacts to the exclusion of everything else. Greg finds a raft of invoices from W Dunnfield & goes to the address on them in order to settle these long overdue debts. There he meets Charis Dunnfield, daughter of William & is immediately smitten with her. The feeling is mutual. Charis is not the usual young lady living mostly in Constantinople and running her father’s antiquities business! Gregory must settle for her friendship instead and her help vetting other potential brides for him until she voyages East again.
This is the final book in the trilogy, however it’s easily read on its own. I really liked Greg who whilst falling totally under Charis’ spell remained a gentleman, he was also shouldering the management of the barony's estates & dealing with supporting his scandalous mother. I liked Charis but found her a little blinkered & self centred wanting her cake & eating it too. I did love how their relationship developed & love how Greg was willing to let her go. I also loved the epilogue which rounded off this series beautifully & also gave a catch up with Greg’s sisters. A well written engrossing read
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I enjoyed reading this. Charis is a very strong character with a very interesting and informative lifestyle that she is also very devoted to. Exploring their family obligations opens up new feelings also worth exploring requiring a boldness and bravery that test their preconceived notions and expectations. Gregory is just a great character, patient, understanding and respectful. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to read and leave a review.

I have read several books written by Julia Justiss and they have all rated 4-5 stars! In The Explorer Baroness she has written an intelligent, well traveled, independent character--Charis Dunnfield. It's in the summer of 1834 that Charis meets Gregory Lattimer. She helps her father run an antiquities business. Gregory meets with her to settle his father's overdue accounts. His father is Baron Vraux. Over time they become friends but there is a hint of something more. Due to her father's ailing health, Gregory invites them to stay at his property on the South Downs near Eastbourne where he can enjoy warmer weather. Charis and Gregory have very different plans for the future and they wonder if maybe friendship is all they were meant to have. I enjoyed this book which is the third book in the Heirs in Waiting series. It is not your typical historical romance.

In the finale book in the series Heirs In Waiting, there was something Exotic about this captivating tale. Perhaps it was the mystic of The Ottoman Empire and stories of customs of living in Constantinople alone with her fascinating way about her throughout the the story. Charis Dunnfield and Gregory Lattimar the Baron of Vraux met when he was trying to business with her Father. Only to find him ill and having to deal with his daughter. There was an instant connection that begins this exciting Journey between them. A True Love Connection. Warms you Heart and Tears to your eyes. One you will not put down.
