You know, it's hard to overstate the importance of this, The Iliad and The Odyssey to Western literature - which has little or nothing to do with their worth as literary texts - but my main take away from all three was that all Greek and Roman Gods were just utter dicks.

It is a great story brilliantly told. Not a word is wasted in this edition. It is also an amusing story, with the gods' antics so absurd and the author's telling of the events so straightforward. The book reads like poetry but tells its message in a prosaic manner.

The reason I don't give it 5 stars is that it just wasn't profoundly exciting enough. It was a very fun book, but not a stirring one.
