Life can bring many challenges, uncertainties & sorrows. sometimes, like the psalmist, we are downcast and disturbed, dejected and in turmoil, anxious and fearful, overwhelmed, even despairing. Perhaps God seems far at, and we feel bereft and alone.
Many believers through the centuries have felt like this at times. And they have left us a rich treasury of writings, which can help up in our own struggles. the author's prayer is that this short book will bring it's readers peace, comfort, and strength to carry on, through the WOrd of God and the word of His faithful people. Then, like the psalmist, we can once more put our hope in God and praise Him.
A dear friend gave me this little book, and even though I wasn’t sure I would find it all that interesting, I decided to give it a try this past month. What a blessing this little devotional is! Focused on God and His word, with multiple references to the Bible and many stories of the “greats” of the past (I loved reading some of the stories behind some of the old well-beloved hymns! They were a sermon in themselves!), this was a quick, thought-provoking read. Recommended for anyone feeling discouraged and anxious in today’s world. I came away from this read quite encouraged, and wouldn’t be surprised if I read it again soon.
To be honest I didn't expect much from a give-away book, but this was actually very good. It was a lot more spiritually insightful and deep than I'd expected. There was little in the way of either practical worldly principle for addressing problems or even relating to practical persecution and trouble; but there is much of biblical truth. A good portion of the book is simply sharing and expounding on scripture, and another portion is using traditional hymns(with a short back story about the writer) or Sookhdeo's own poetry to give encouragement; so that there is little room left for Sookhedeo's own teaching. Nevertheless there is enough here to impress and indeed to encourage that there is much more depth to the founder/leader of Barnabas Fund than simply a lobbyist or a campaigner.
This is a book that is full of hope. Patrick touch through the Bible and reveals to us all of God’s promises and all the good reasons as to why we should rejoice in the knowledge of God‘s love and mercy.
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning of gods promises, as Wellers being reminded of God’s commitment to their eternal life and glory.
Sookhdeo Search #1 I heard about this geezer roughly twelve months ago at Easter 2023 but this is the first time I have read one of his books. Simple, with lots of poetic writings by PS amongst his thoughts on the Bible. Somewhat encouraging but I think pretty forgettable, but it certainly is encouraging. I'll see if I can find other books by this geezer.
This firmly Bible-based book brings together many encouraging Bible passages, poems and songs to encourage Christians in a world which is disturbing, challenging and full of uncertainties and sorrows.
I have had this book on my shelf for a long time ..I have even moved it to my read pile a few times...but as with all things God...I found myself in a place where I Needed This book and most importantly the Verses used in this book to bring my soul to Joy.
There are only seven short chapters in this book, but Sookhdeo expertly combines hymns & quotes from some heroes of the faith with scripture and a well-researched narrative.
The topics include:
