She wants a man. She needs a job. If she travels through time, she just might find both… Sunnyside, Texas, present day. Jennifer Cloud hates that she’s unemployed and brokenhearted. Again. Still struggling to figure out how to adult, things get worse when an inherited amulet hurls her back to 1568 Scotland. And though she’s enchanted by kilted hunk Caiyan, she stumbles onto a plot to steal devices that can alter the past.
Lost in a world that makes less sense than her modern one, Jennifer dutifully embraces her destiny to defend history. But when a Mexican revolutionary swipes her ticket home, her mission and future may have come to a dead end.
Can Jennifer recover her strange necklace without rewriting prior events and maybe even hook up with the savory Scot?
J anet Leigh, a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree, was born in Garland, Texas, and has remained a loyal Texas native her entire life. She decided to take her love of storytelling and her archive of crazy family stories and write her own novel. She published her literary debut The Shoes Come First in 2014. Today, she is a full-time chiropractor and acupuncturist who splits her time between seeing patients and working on her next Jennifer Cloud novel.Leigh lives in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, three children, one mean cat, and a dog with allergies. After working all day, chauffeuring kids around, and writing at every opportunity, she enjoys relaxing with a funny romance or mystery novel. Her favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Janet Evanovich, Leigh Michaels, Diana Gabaldon, John Grisham, and for those times when she needs a good cry, Nicholas Sparks.
This one sounded like a fun time-traveling romance. Jennifer inherits a key and vessel to time-travel, but isn't given any sort of indication or instruction about what she's inherited. By 10% I knew I wasn't going to like this one, and at 15% I was rolling my eyes so much that I decided to give up on it.
Let's start with Jennifer. She's one-dimensional and boring. The first chapter or two is basically all exposition, but she ends up going to prom with her guy best friend, and I can't tell what she wants. Does she want him to kiss her, does she not want him to kiss her? I'm not entirely sure. But when he does kiss her and asks if she wants to find a hotel room (cliche much?), she comes at him with this: "If I had known you were going to treat me like one of your real dates, I would have brought some condoms!"
....Is that supposed to be insulting? Becuase that sounds like she would've been 100% on board with it...And then he asks her to be his girlfriend and this is how she responds: "Okay...let's give it a go."
And only two pages later, to herself: "Was I dreaming? Could my best friend really be my one and only true love?" I don't think she knew what she wanted and it started to drive me crazy.
And on top of this, the writing style itself was pretty one-dimensional and dry. Like I literally found myself reading in a robot voice. This is when her brother goes to college... "Eli graduated high school and decided he wanted to study chiropractic. He moved to Iowa to go to chiropractic school. I had never been to a chiropractor, but Dad took Eli once when he injured his shoulder in football practice." If I hear that word one more time, I'm going to lose it.
And this: "'What is this?' I asked out loud. 'What's happening? Why am I glowing like a Care Bear?'"
Okay, I have to stop now before I keep ranting for the rest of the night.
This was put out there as a cross between Dr. Who and Stephanie Plum (I love that so many publishers call out Stephanie and then slam the series. Irony, much?) Anyway, since I love both Stephanie and the Doctor I decided to give it a try. Its a good story but its actually more like Men in Black do time travel. A secret Government group handles people with a gene that allows them to travel in time with a special key and their unique vehicles. (Our heroine’s is an outhouse) Good characters, good story. Our heroine is only like Steph in that they are both female and the only thing that is like the Doctor is the time travel. No going to other planets or battling aliens.
I went into this book thinking it was a cheesy romance novel, something I am not a big fan of, but it actually was really a fun read. I skimmed the description, not catching the time travel element
It is a light read, on par with a movie you just want to sit and watch, and not think to much about. The main character became really likeable as the story progressed. If you are looking for a fast, fun read, give this one a try!
Fun book! The characters and their vessels are hilarious. Easy summer read that deals with time travel, romance, family, and of course shoes. Great first book from Janet Leigh, can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Such fun! Jennifer thinks she lives a rather mundane life. Things change quickly through the most unusual device. Who know something so "old fashioned" and out of date could transport Jennifer into a new place and time. Without giving away the book, there's romance, mystery and intrigue. Jennifer discovers that her family has a secret that only a few of them can unleash. It leads to an amazing journey and discovery of new places and new people for Jennifer. It also allows her to better understand some of her family. I hope this peaked your interest enough to read an amazing new book!
I received this book for free, thankfully. The storyline was interesting. Good guys and bad guys time travelers. Here are the issues I had with this book: the writing, the plot, the use of a lot of stereotypes and accents. I'm not sure exactly why the bad guys were bad, or why the good guys were after them. And then there was a whole lot of Pancho Villa in it for some reason? But I stuck with it so that's why 3 stars. I don't think I'll continue with the Jennifer Cloud series.
It was pretty good, but I don't want to read any more of the series. I liked the characters and the attitude of the book. I liked the mix of humor and drama. Some of the plotting was amateurish. I thought a better writer could have made a more skillful plot.
While the origin story is interesting, a battle with time traveling baddies seems boring.
...but enough guilty pleasure to stick with it through the entire story. At times, this book feels as if there are two different authors- an educated adult and a 14 girl going through puberty. It's incohesive and childish, but with just enough splash of intrigue to keep you reading.
The idea of light hearted time travel and a shoe loving heroine seemed fun but there are huge holes in the story (it starts in Italy and then jumps to Texas with no explanation, for example), the writing is uninspired, the characters insipid, and I never even found the plot. There are also frequent sexual references for no apparent reason. No, just no.
Not typically my genre. Fantasy with time travel but oh my gosh it was awesome. I flat out loud laughed so hard in a couple of spots. To got some romance and silly suspense with lots of characters that were awesome. Can’t wait to read the next one. I’m hooked
Being advertised as a cross between Stephanie Plum and Doctor Who, it caught my eye and I figured that it wouldn't hurt to give it a try, since it was free. It started really slow but I was curious enough to keep going and I'm glad I did. While it's by no means a masterpiece, once it got going, it was enjoyable. By then end, I want to know what would happen. Now, I might just get book #2!
Should have DNF-ed it. The writing was not great, the plot seemed to be all over the place, and the main character just didn’t seem to know what she wanted. Very disappointing!
I love time travel books, historical fiction, and female protagonists so I was really looking forward to this. Unfortunately, I'm not planning on reading any more of the series. While I liked the book and thought it had some good points (some snappy dialogue, well written sex scenes) it also had casual racism, homophobia, and transphobia. Not cool. The main character, Jennifer, gets in a cab in New York and looks at the cabbie's medallion. She says that although he has an American sounding name he looks more like a [insert Middle Eastern name here]. She then tells a not funny joke about her nail technician named Jennifer who is Asian and makes fun of her accent and lack of perfect English. This exchange has nothing to do with the plot. Was it necessary? Nope. One of the other main characters is either transgender or is gay man who dresses as a woman (the book isn't clear). A main male character is freaked out by going undercover as his date. Was this necessary or important to the story? Not at all. We all need to be better than this. I'm not going to waste my time reading books that perpetuate hurtful stereotypes.
Jennifer is living a good life on Texas. True she’s not sure what to make of her life, but she does know that she loves shoes and shopping if she can make a career of that, she’ll count herself as a success. In the midst of all this, she finds out that not only did her Aunt provide her with a gift that was sent to her in death, but she also learns that she has the ability to time travel. If that is not crazy enough, 3 men that she has had relations with are also involved in the time travel business. Yeah, not sure how she manages that but it makes for some funny first interactions. Either way, this was an exciting story with a lot of intrigue and fun to keep you invested. I’m not sure I’ll keep on with the series, but I truly enjoyed this light read.
I loved this book and could not wait for the next one. It is light hearted and funny with adventure and danger thrown it. Jennifer is not aware she has any special abilities until she inherits and Outhouse . She finds she has the ability to travel back in time to look for bad guys. That is a bit obscure but you really have to read these to appreciate the Authors innovative approach. They are interesting, funny, suspenseful and leave you wanting to read the next one. They made me laugh and feel good, what could be better.
Once you dive into this time travel adventure you better hold on for the entire ride. Jennifer will have you involved with her and her family tree. You will not want to stop reading until you have the whole history and laughing all the while. Good read and great start to the series.
I would have never considered this book if I knew it was about time travel but somehow it appeared on my kindle and I read every word. The story didn't make sense all the time but if I kept reading I was able to figure things out. It really was fun to read.
I don't usually read time travel books but this one sounded entertaining and it is. Jennifer kept me guessing about her romantic interests. I'm still not sure about that.
We are proud to announce that THE SHOES COME FIRST by Janet Leigh is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells a reader that this book is well worth their time and money!
Oh god this was awful. I picked up this book thinking it would be a less immature Ruby Red. I mean, the main character is an adult and all. I did not expect it to feel even more childish. Oh, but there was sex so that makes it adult, right?
Jennifer is the most shallow main character I've read about in a while. All around her hot men seem to fall over themselves to bone her, and she's totally fine with that. They're all casual, but she gets incredibly jealous of other girls around them. (all three of them. Not seperately, no, she is in love with all three of them at once.)
The plot is all over the place, and not that well developed, nor is it well written. There is A LOT of racism in this book (our main character is pretty racist, but no one cares). Then there is the homophobia and transphobia. All transporters are female. But then there's Ace. At first, I thought this was inclusive, he's trans, and so seen as female, right? WRONG. He's described as kind of male, and just regular male, by both himself and the people around him. Okay, maybe I was wrong, he isn't trans after all. He just likes crossdressing. Cool. But then he says he's on estrogen. A male on estrogen. So he's taking hormones? Is he trans or isn't he? If he is, why does everyone (Including he himself) call him male? If he's not, why is he taking hormones? And there was some homophobia for good measure. Because how could any man even pretend to bring a man as date. Even if he's dressed as a female, to the point that no one can tell. No, definitely awful, right? Right? ... Why is this book like this? If it's impossible to tell he's male (and if he's trans, he's not), even for people who know he's male (or isn't he? I still don't know), no one else would be able to tell, so there should be no problem pretending to have him as your date.
None of the characters are developed, and all are shallow. The men are "hot", sleep with Jessica, pine after her, and have no other personality. (With the exception of Ace, who is a stereotype of a gay crossdresser) In fact, this book is really big on its stereotype. The asian nail salon artist with broken English, the flamboyant gay crossdresser, heck everyone is reduced to a stereotype. Gertie is the only character who was kinda interesting, but she's just there, and feels kinda like a plot device rather than an actual character. Pity.
There is a lot of sex, talk about sex, thinking of sex. 80% of Jessica's personality is her horniness, and the other 20 is shoes. (For a shoe lover, shoes are only mentioned as something gimmicky).
I really hated this book and I hate that I finished it, because it was so not worth it. The concept is fine, the excecution is just -not for me-.
As the cover/title suggests, this is a "fun" read. Not a lot of depth, or "book club" moments. It was all a little silly. Time travel in such devices as an outhouse, bathtub, teepee, picture booth, racecar. Some sex scenes, and Jen gets around. She's involved with three guys during the course of the book. The book jumped around quite a bit (beyond the time travel jumps). I received the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. With many of these offers, the Kindle copy has been part of Kindle Unlimited, but not this one - so I didn't have the text copy to refer back to, which I likely WOULD have done a time or two to double check things.
I liked the narrator. Young, animated voice, which matched the protagonist.
For a few moments, with the time travel, it reminded me a bit of the Magic Treehouse kids series. Back to a certain moment in time, some learning moments.
The title ... yes, "the shoes come first" statement was said a couple of times, and Jen loves shoes, but that really didn't have anything to do with the time travel. The title just didn't seem to represent to story to me.
This book was not my favorite. I originally got it because I love Outlander and this sounded vaguely Outlanderish. The book was disappointing. The concept was cute but fleshed out poorly, the romances were ridiculous and unnecessary. I'm down for a good romance novel but there wasn't any romance just random guilty sex. I also felt they could have made Gertie a really awesome character but they made her annoying for no reason and she can't keep a secret literally to save her life. The entire book jumped around timelines (when it had nothing to do with actual time traveling, just jumping between Jen's lifetime.) And it made the story hard to follow. I also thought Marco and Brodie were underwritten and should have either been given more page time or (in Marcos case) been saved for the second book. I'm not sure I'll read the second book (or the third, fourth, or fifth.) But I am intrigued on what is going to happen so I might spark notes it or read a spoiler review.
DNF'd at 8%. Somewhat lengthy prologue started with two pages of one character's POV, then switched without warning to a different POV, and then the introductory character died. I actually didn't catch that it was a prologue until I got to chapter 1 and had to page back to the beginning to make sense of the POVs.
And at chapter 1... it was 1st person. I typically hate 1st person and try at all costs to avoid stories in that POV. The blurb is what grabbed me but there wasn't any indication from the blurb that it was a 1st person story. The prologue is in 3rd person.
Couldn't connect with the MC, couldn't make it through the unnecessary backstory and details about her family and growing up. I also got confused between chapter 1 where I think she states she's the middle child between older sister and Eli, but then the next chapter she's 16 and Eli is older than her at 18? It did not seem like the author kept her facts straight.
Personally did not have any trouble keeping track of the characters and their function, nor did the complicated scenarios slow me down but the lack of even flow or consistent pace is a concern.
Despite those reservations this was a good mix of serious and silly with some very interesting plot points that intertwined creating a quite enjoyable whole no matter how outlandish it turned out to be.
However that said Jen never connected for me and to be honest she would not be my first choice as a lead female character.
Book 1 did not manage to invest me in continuing on with the series as there are so many already out there that I have yet to lose interest in and would prefer to finish as those books already have waiting on my shelves.
This book was vapid and racist and I only finished it out of hate. Which is really too bad, because it's a cute idea - a young woman discovers she's a time traveler and has to fight the bad guys to protect her own future? Neat! Except the execution is terrible, every character is one-dimensional, and every non-white character is stereotyped to death. (Did Janet Leigh *really* need to try to write out a Jamaican accent? We know what one sounds like, mon.)
Whatever, I finished it, the book counts toward my 2018 reading challenge. Now hopefully I can forget I ever read it in the first place.
A decent story. Jennifer Cloud is a shoe buyer until her boss is arrested. The story gets off to a rather slow start however once Jen makes her second time trip, things pick up. Lots of love interests make themselves known to her. I wonder if this series will turn into a reverse harem-style story. There are a few high-quality scenes that enhance the story. Otherwise, it seems to be a hit or miss depending on reader preferences.
The writing, characters, plot, all were just EXCELLENT! This was a free book and it was a surprise. I don't normally pick out this type of story, but I am totally glad I picked this one!! Jen Cloud is spunky, spontaneous, funny and I laughed out loud several times! Sayings that I have NEVER seen in print and only heard occassionally, were in here and I really liked that. Excited for the second! PLEASE READ! THIS IS A DELIGHT! TOTALLY WORTH THE TIME!!
