I'm greeted by the strangest sight. A small dark-haired boy is standing there. It’s like he’s a human parcel, delivered to my front door.
‘My name is Luke,’ he says.
When Johnny meets Lauren in a bar in Santa Cruz, there’s an instant connection. On an American road trip with best friend Will, Johnny promises to return to the girl who has stolen his heart.
Until tragedy strikes, forcing Johnny to fly back home without ever seeing Lauren again.
Six years later, Johnny is living his life in London, even if he’s never forgotten the girl with the grey eyes and dark hair.
Until one September morning, he opens his door to find a little boy standing there – a child, Johnny quickly comes to learn, who was created that one magical night. Lauren is dying, and her last wish is to reunite five-year-old Luke with the father he doesn’t yet know.
Thrown into unexpected parenthood, Johnny finds himself navigating school-gate politics, Disney movies and tantrums, guided by the notes Lauren has written for him.
Life as an instant dad isn’t always easy, but as Johnny and Luke open their hearts to each other, Johnny is about to discover that life’s joy isn’t always where you expected it.
Maybe Johnny and Lauren are attempting to find their love again in a nod to times without technology and the ability to communicate so effortlessly. However, it was surely never going to end in a happy ever after and I was willing the characters to abandon their faith in fate and use mobile phones for their advantage. Why make life difficult for yourselves when true love seems to be staring at you in the face?
Of course, the path of true love never runs smooth either and this is perfectly demonstrated in MacMillan’s tragic story. What begins as a hopeful start to a new relationship, swiftly turns to tragedy and sorrow. A relationship that spans merely twelve hours is cut abruptly short and the plot developments literally had me gasping in disbelief and sadness. Therefore, a word of warning when you start this one: you might want to have the tissues to hand.
When Johnny discovers that his precious twelves hours with Lauren resulted in him becoming a father, I did have to smile at the scenarios that MacMillan describes. Suddenly Johnny is thrust into parenthood, hastily leaving behind his bachelor days. Johnny’s bewilderment at how to raise a five year old did make me chuckle, relieving the sadness that is well and truly established in the opening chapters.
However, as Johnny’s path into parenthood develops, I did find that the narrative lost a bit of its momentum and intensity. I wanted to see more scenes of Luke and Johnny’s relationship progress over time; instead I thought it became a series of episodes that eventually moved to Luke’s breakdown when readers are reminded that the poor boy is just five years old and struggling with this abrupt transition to England.
The final part of the novel reminded me of the opening with its emotion and intensity. Whilst I thought the book was well-written altogether, it were these sections that I found the most profound. I guess its the theme of tragic love that is never reunited that spoke to me the most and it was definitely more emotional compared to the rest of the book. There is no definitive closing to the story, leaving it to readers to determine the future of Luke and Johnny’s relationship. I think I preferred this because it allowed me to think about how these characters would progress in the future and whether, in an optimistic world, they would become a family with Lauren again.
Throughout the story, there are references to songs and music. It is what unites Johnny and Lauren when they first meet and he uses this to bridge the gap in his relationship with Luke. I found this so sweet and reassuring, especially when MacMillan describes how Luke responds to Johnny’s playing. It is like Lauren is with them both as they navigate this new way of living. Furthermore, the scenes where Johnny imagines Lauren in the room with him, advising him on how to manage Luke, were also very touching and sweet, showing just how much love Johnny still has for Lauren.
This was an emotional, sweet yet, tragic love story. It was a bit of a hard read in places but I definitely appreciated the more light-hearted moments in the midst of the narrative. All in all, it felt like you were sharing this emotional journey that both Johnny and Luke experience and I think this is what made it such a touching story.
With thanks to Hera books and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am so glad I got to read songs for your mother. I fell in love with it straight away and could not put it down. I finished reading it a day because it was so addictive. You definitely go on emotional rollcoster reading this book it makes you laugh and cry. It’s definitely will make you cry. If you not read it I definitely recommend you do. The end of the book I wanted to know so much more . I have lots of unanswered questions. I am hoping the author does second book. There was few twits I didn’t see coming which kept me guessing. Jonny is main character and is goes on trip with his best friend in America and meets a lady called lauren where is life changes forever. The writing style is excellent and keeps you wanting to read more and the characters are easy to warm to. I will definitely read more of Gordon MacMillan books in the future. Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this book.
Johnny and Lauren meet at a bar one night and they have an instant connection. Johnny is on a road trip with his best friend, Will. After an amazing night together, Johnny and Lauren both feel something deep for each other. Johnny promises to return to Lauren. However, the unexpected happens and Johnny is unable to make it back. He's never forgotten Lauren though. Six years later, he answers the door to his London apartment to find a little boy standing there. Luke is the result of that one beautiful night with Lauren. Lauren is dying and her wish is for their son to be with his father. Johnny doesn't know the first thing about being a parent, thankfully he has the help of wonderful friends and family. This was a heartwarming, emotional, story. I loved how the characters were portrayed. Johnny's journey to learn how to be a father was so sweet. The final chapter had me in tears. Thanks to Netgalley and Hera Books for providing the ARC copy of this book in return for my honest review.
This book is amazing! it's a fun, inspiring, light read with relatable characters. The story was well-written and heartwarming that would surely leave you with a sense of happiness and closure for the characters involved. The ending made me cry.
The author has beautifully described the life and challenges of being a single parent due to a brief encounter with a stranger during a holiday trip. I loved the strong support system that enabled the characters to overcome all the challenges that life throws at them
If you love a story about parenthood, romance, and friendship I would recommend this book to you!
I'm thankful to the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Like that catchy melody you just can't stop humming, once you start this book, you won't be able to stop. Grant it, I’m not certain if Mother's Day was the best day to finish it, or perhaps it was the most appropriate of them all, because it really gets you right where it counts. There's no way to turn your back on it. It's there. It's waiting with an open hand, and hurting heart... and yet all the more beautiful for it.
Johnny was on the road trip of a lifetime. Overseas with his best mate, taking in the lay of the land, never staying in one spot for too long, and making memories by the bucket load. It took a change of mind, a chance encounter, and a whole lot of fate to redirect his stars, but redirected they were for both better and worse. The better comes from his meeting the woman that would forever hold his heart...too bad the time they actually shared in each other's company would amount to hours versus a lifetime. You see, every decision we make, every roll of life's dice, sets us on a new path filled with unseen obstacles, joys, and sorrows. This time around, while things were looking up, they all of a sudden fell like a house of cards. Flash forward several years, and he's found footing again, though I wouldn't call it his own...until a little boy shows up and changes his stars once again, leading him on a journey of the heart he never could have anticipated to an ending that will have you captured heart and soul.
I loved the relationships the author built between the characters, both near AND far...though I shall not elaborate on the latter portion of that comment. Johnny had a support system built into his life that he never dreamed of utilizing in such a way...I mean, unplanned pregnancies are one thing, but to suddenly be thrust into fatherhood six years down the line is a whole other ball game! Without them, his best friends, his mother, his sister, and so on, he would have been much more lost than found...but thanks in part to them, and his own ability to learn as he went, each day may not have been perfect, but they were perfectly content together. It broke my heart every time he was talking with Lauren, reaching out across the miles on the connection they started so long ago. It felt so real, and yet I was so disheartened because they never really had a chance, and there were all these unknown forces that worked against them, yet only each party knew of their own troubles. You just wanted to turn back the clock so they could have their moment in time...but I suppose they did, and while short it poetically spoke to how powerful our connections, our relationships can be...even if only for a brief moment in time.
A wonderful read that will have you in tears, or at least it had me in tears, but will leave you with a smiling heart.
This review has been made possible thanks to NetGalley and Hera Books. Thank you for giving me the chance to review the book honestly prior to its publication.
I was originally drawn in by the stunning cover (ignoring what they say about judging books by their covers) because it conveyed a sense of melancholy in its simplicity. And I am always partial to some minimalist colour-blocked covers! The second thing that appealed to me what the concept - Johnny opens his door to his five year old son, a byproduct of one night with the girl he’s certain was the love of his life while on a road trip around the US with his best friend Will. It gave off very strong Three Men and a Baby or Baby Daddy vibes, just with a five year old Luke instead.
The rest of the book focuses on Johnny stepping up to be a parent, with the help of his friends and family - as they say, it takes a village to raise a child. He was also coming to terms with missing out on the years he could have spent with Lauren, raising their child together, and Luke’s early years and first milestones, which he writes up in songs to and about her. Another fun aspect of the novel was the imagined conversations between Johnny and Lauren, through the letters she left with Luke, answering any questions he would have about parenting.
I found that the book was really quick to read, I finished it in less than a day, the writing flowed smoothly and the chapters divided different scenes and time periods well. At points, I did find the characterisation of the children as too mature in their speech or too infantile, and the adults felt like they fell within tropes and were a bit one-dimensional. I was also hoping there would be a resolution regarding Johnny and Lauren, or someone else as a potential partner for him but was disappointed. There were also a few moments that felt a bit forced or too serendipitous, such as songs conveniently coming on the radio, very specific movie choices etc.
On the whole, it was a sweet story about kismet between two people, a man coming to terms with suddenly being responsible for a child, and a community coming together to help him raise Luke. I would have loved to read more about Johnny’s friend TSP (though I did not like her name) and her relationship with Will, as well as their other friend Susan and her personality outside of her career.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s in the mood for something bittersweet, a little bit melancholy and who loves music and song lyrics.
Songs for Your Mother by Gordon MacMillan plucks at the heartstrings like a guitar in the story.
The author's debut novel reaches out to all parents who share the protagonist's worries about raising their child. From the early pages when young Luke is lost in the store to the final moments Johnny & young Luke share at the mother's deathbed, this tale grips your heart.
The premise of young lovers separated by fate seems fresh in this story. It's a story as old as time, but MacMillan makes it his own with his well-written dialogue. The characters have a deep range of emotions and are well-developed.
The plot moves along nicely and concludes without devolving into cliches. I believe any reader looking for a captivating story that can be finished quickly will absolutely love this book.
This story made me smile and reduced me to tears. I strongly recommend this book to readers of every gender and age.
Thank you to the author, Hera Books, and Rachel's Random Resources for providing me a copy of the book to review. This is my honest, unbiased opinion.
This pulls the heart strings in all the right places. I had a few small probability issues with the story and that ending? Look, I wasn't expecting or needing the sickly sweet cliche happy ending. But I felt it needed to be a little more than that. But overall a beautiful, heart pulling, tear jerking story that was lovely to read
I would just like to say a very big thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for very kindly forwarding me a copy of this book, for my kindle, in return for an honest review. Before I even started to read this book I knew it was going to be an emotional roller coaster and I was right - and I loved it! I instantly fell in love with the characters and it made my heart glow. It was a lovely read, a feel-good, funny, beautifully written, book that was also sweet and romantic. It’s definitely an author I will be watching out for and reading more of in the future.
Songs for Your Mother is a fantastic tale about how a single moment can last forever. Although there is a lot of heartbreak and emotion in this novel, it is incredibly heartwarming and leaves the reader with the satisfaction that they read a feel-good book.
While on a road trip through the United States, Johnny meets Lauren in Santa Cruz, California. The two of them have an instant connection where they want to explore a relationship with each other. Unfortunately, events occur to pull Johnny away and back to the UK. Although he is not with Lauren, he never forgot their time together. Normally, I am not the greatest fan of two characters falling almost instantly in love with each other in less than a day, but the author wrote the bond between the two characters in a very believable way that did not bother me at all.
Six years after their night together, a young boy, Luke, shows up on Johnny’s doorstep. Lauren’s dying wish is for Luke to know his father, so Johnny becomes an insta-dad and must now figure out how to be a parent. The two characters are thrown together to make the best of the awkwardness that would come when you did not know about the other for six years, but they do share their love of Lauren. As expected, Johnny faces many obstacles about how to be a father and Luke is working his way to bonding with Johnny as a father.
Luckily, Johnny is not alone as he has his friends and family that serve as an excellent support system. The entire story is all about Johnny’s journey with many emotions along the way. The character in this story was very well written and I loved the two of them getting to know each other. The use of songwriting in this story was incorporated well and gave an extra layer to the novel.
Even though the novel does tug at the heartstrings, it still is a fairly light read and I breezed through it relatively fast as I wanted to keep reading. There is a nice mix of happiness, humor, and sadness, so the novel does not fully lean one way or the other as a whole, although the ending was emotional. The chapters go between different points in time, but it still flows as a whole. It is an excellent story about what could have been as Johnny reflects on the missed years with Lauren.
Overall, this story was very sweet. It can feel a bit slow at times, which can be a little frustrating. On the other hand, though, I can see why it could be a conscious choice as it could be a reflection of the character's emotions. After Luke comes into Johnny’s life, he now reflects on the path not traveled. This was a nice well-written novel that is perfect for those who want a faster read, but one that will affect your emotions.
**I give a special thank you to Rachel @rararesources, the author, Gordon MacMillon, and the publisher, Hera Books for the opportunity to participate with this excellent and heartwarming novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
Many thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Gordon MacMillan for providing me with a digital copy of Songs For Your Mother with a request for an honest review.
Gordon Macmillan delivers a painful punch to the heart in his debut novel, Songs For Your Mother. There may have been three pages where I wasn’t sobbing my guts out. Yet, this is not a bad feeling. It felt more like a soul-cleansing that I didn’t know I needed.
Johnny and his best buddy Will are visiting California for the ultimate road trip down the 101. Until Will has doubts and Johnny runs off in a huff. Then, Lauren walks in, and Johnny’s life will never be the same. Tragedy tears the couple apart. But a love child named Luke connects them.
These characters were more than fictitious people on the pages of the book. They were real to me. Will felt like the bother I never had. He was equally annoying and sweet. Johnny and Lauren had that special connection that eludes most people. I wanted to be part of that couple. But, it is Luke who steals the show. All I wanted to do was scoop him up and let him know that everything would be okay.
Johnny does a great job at being a dad. He seems to say the right things at the right time to help Luke feel better. But, seeing him struggle with learning what to do made him human. Though, when Luke begins acting out in a way that Johnny feels he can’t fix, he decides that they have to see Lauren. Regardless of what awaits them at the other end.
Songs For Your Mother is a beautiful story that incorporates music as a salve to everyone’s heart. However, the prose is hard to read at times. The words didn’t flow as well as they could have. I expected something a bit more lyrical, considering the book relates to music. But I found the sentences choppy and without the soothing lull that makes reading easy.
Ease of reading aside, the book is beautifully haunting. The author creates a well of emotion so deep you must watch so as not to fall in. I am pleased to award Songs For Your Mother 4 out of 5 stars. Readers who enjoy contemporary fiction that falls on the emotional sword will enjoy this book. I should warn you to read with a box of tissues at your side.
After looking at the cover and reading the blurb, Gordon MacMillan's début novel is everything you'd expect and so much more.
Johnny Clarke never forgot the beautiful young woman he met in Santa Cruz, California. Their brief time together triggered feelings neither had expected to happen. Yet, despite the connection, they go their separate way, and Johnny promises to come back and find Lauren. However, fate steps in and takes away his chance for a reunion. Six years later, Johnny is living his life back in London until five-year-old Luke turns up on his doorstep. He's never forgotten the child's mom, as he follows the advice she sent along with her son. Life becomes a challenge, but it also offers an opportunity to right what happened in the past.
When I opened this novel, I had a feeling I'd end up shedding a tear or two. That's not to say, the book is overwhelmingly sad because it's not. The mood is upbeat and humorous as Johnny (Jon) navigates his new role in life as a father. Anyone who is a parent will identify with his struggles as he begins building a relationship with his son. He's forced to jump into the role with two feet, which inevitably causes a splash or two. It's entertaining and highlights the difficulties of caring for and raising young children.
The scenes between Jon and Luke are heart-wrenching as the pair get to know each other. Jon might have started out as clueless, but he has a wonderful, caring small network of friends who help to point him in the right direction… that, and Lauren's extensive log of notes and thoughts. Their story is an emotive assault on our emotions, leading us to empathise with their situation. All characters are relatable and likeable for the compassion they share. Whilst Jon and Luke are the driving force of this poignant novel, Lauren, Josie, Susan, TSP and Georgia are the embodiment of strong female role models all rooting for the common cause.
To sum up, Songs for Your Mother is as delightful as its thought-provoking. Prepare to shed a tear or two as the story pulls at your heartstrings.

First, I want to thank Gordon MacMillan, Hera Books, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
WOW!! I instantly fell head over heels in love with Gordon MacMillan’s beautifully written debut’s novel Songs For Your Mother!! His book will pull hard on all of your heart strings big time to the point where you may shed a tear or two (at least I did).
The graphic designers did a fantastic job capturing the essence of the book and the characters. I loved how it was done in cartoonish characters too.
Gordon hooked my attention right away within the prologue and just needed to know what happened leading up to those events. Needless to say I knew I was going to fall in love with this book just by that prologue and I was correct!
If you are a music fan then you will love this book. Songs For Your Mother is strongly based around music and song writing. There were many references to pop culture music references such Say Anything. I couldn’t stop smiling at that reference as I am a huge fan of that movie. Infact, in the back of the book Gordon posts some of the song titles and lyrics used in the book. I thought that was such a unique twist.
One of the best storylines in the book was when Lauren and Johnny met.
Gordon brings awareness to many very important topics in Songs For Your Mother.
There were some wicked time jumps with shocking out of the blue outcomes that left me emotional.
However, nothing prepared me for the big climatic shocker that not only blew my mind but of other characters as well. It was this one storyline that Gordon really shined as an author on many different levels. He brought out so many emotions in so many characters on so many levels it was just amazing how he handled each situation.
What was truly beautiful to see this storyline come full circle into something magnificent.
A trip to the USA is supposed to be the an epic journey between two best friends. Johnny & Will are in California and while in Santa Cruz, Johnny meets Lauren and a connection is made. They spend the night together and learn all about each other. They learn about likes, dislikes and everything in between. In the morning when they part Johnny promises to meet up with Will and come back to her. While convincing Will to head back tragedy strikes and Johnny finds himself back in England. After years of struggle Johnny feels he is settle back into his life and is living in London. Things are good not great but he is in such a better place until a woman and a little boy show up at his doorstep. Johnny takes one look at the little one and has a feeling he knows who he is. He learns that Lauren and he created this little boy all those years ago. He learns that Lauren is very sick and near death. He knows that her friend doesn’t have such a great opinion of her and he is flabbergasted when she leaves the boy with him. Johnny jumps write into parenting. Figuring out the ins and out of raising a little boy. Play dates, tantrums and sleepless nights. He is doing a pretty good job but there is something missing. He has letters from Lauren to help him raise the boy but he wants to see if he can find her. To see if she has passed away. To try to bring this family back together once again.. this story made me laugh and cry.. it was well written and I really did like the characters. I would absolutely read an other book by this author. I want to thank Netgalley & Gordon MacMillan for my advanced copy..
The story opens with a woman about to give birth. Such a tender moment in someone's life. However, at the end of the chapter we realise she is going this alone. As she doesn't know why the father never came back.
We then go back to the day they met. A beautiful love at first sight story emerges. What I kept asking myself was, How can this go wrong? Even to the point were it looked like all was well. And then I read the reason he never went back.
This story is such an emotionally charged read. It takes you from one extreme to the next. One page you're in tears and the next you see the joys of life. It highlights the power and strength we as humans have to cope with some pretty hard things in life.
Each character has a struggle in life, like we all do really. Nobody's perfect ☺️ yet each one has the coping mechanisms to deal with their problems head on. Or with a little help from friends and family.
I loved the characters in this story and felt great warmth and connection to them, their lives and worlds felt real. And I wanted to know what happened next.
Songs For Your Mother is a very heart warming yet emotionally charged story.
This book touched my very soul. It was beautiful and heart breaking at the same time. A love story that takes place in less than 24 hours but aligns two souls so perfectly and creates a bond that holds them together for a life time, Johnny and Luke are so beautiful together, they are thrown together and besides bring father and son they are bonded over the love of one woman. The songs throughout the book are poignant and those lyrics speak volumes more than pages of feelings. Pure love and admiration are in those few specially chosen words that capture how Johnny and Lauren truly feel.
I knew there could never be a happy ending with Lauren’s diagnoses, yet some how by the end, through the tears there was a happiness. They were reunited, no matter how briefly it may be and they get to be a family and they their love shine.
An absolute must read and I know it will stay with me for a long time to come.
4.5🌟 stars This novel has some brutally sad moments and lots of regret about the road not taken, but it's a great story. Told from a man's point of view, lead protagonist Jon is realistically flawed and haunted by Lauren, the woman he left behind. As he takes on the responsibility of raising their young son Luke, the story realistically portrays his fears, misgivings and challenges right along with the sublime father-son moments like helping his son learn to ride a bike and sharing their love of broccoli. There's so much poignancy and emotion in his fatherhood journey, with good days and terrible tantrums.
Despite the sadness underlying the short-lived romance and Lauren's illness, I really enjoyed Songs For Your Mother but it did seem a bit slow at times. Still, A very worthwhile read.
Thanks to Hera Books and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
'Songs For Your Mother' is a book that you will start reading and find difficult to put down. It's great to read a beautiful love story written from a male perspective. Heartbreaking and sad, yet uplifting and heartwarming, this is a story that will make you feel like crying and pull at your heartstrings at times, not also make you feel so amused and uplifted at other times, that it will bring a smile to your face. As I finished reading this book, it left me wondering whether the author may write a sequel to this novel. Regardless of this, thank you to the author for this great story, which I would definitely recommend to all readers. I will definitely be reading more books by this writer.
A mother is like Mother Nature who always gives unconditionally without any expectations in return.
What a beautifully emotive read this was. From what I can see it's the debut novel by this author & I recommend you all read it! The perfect feel good read that will make you laugh & cry.
Johnny's on a US road trip with his best mate Will. He meets Lauren on a night out & she steals his heart. He promises to return to her, but tragedy ensues & he is forced to return home to the UK.
Six years later there's a knock at the door & a little boy is standing there with his suitcase...

This is both a heartwarming and at times heartbreaking story with some lighter moments and it took me on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading it. The characters are well defined and likeable and relatable. The storyline flows well and there is plenty in the plot that kept me happily turning the pages. It’s an engaging read, which had me hooked from page one. The relationship development is more between father and son than a romantic relationship. The beginning is a love story but then tragedy results in the couple going their separate ways and the theme of missed chances at love runs through the book. A lovely story about the love and relationship between a father and son.
Two Brit best friends took a road trip across America, & changed the lives of those they love forever. Loss & grief are central to the story, the past came hurtling back into Johnny’s life in England. Suddenly, he has a 5 y old son, from a fateful one night encounter in California. Johnny undertakes the responsibility for his son Luke, upon learning the boy’s mother is terminally ill. Father & son find their way with each other, but Luke’s crumbling under the weight of a new life , new Dad, new country, & desperately needs to see his mother, whom he knows is terribly sick.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a slow start but once it got going I couldn't put it down. It's heart-breaking and feel-good all at the same time. I think this would be the perfect read for a beach trip this summer as it's pretty fast and uplifting.
Jon is on a road trip with his best friend Will when he meets Lauren. He promises to return to her the next day, but gets injured and is forced to return to the UK. Fast forward 6 years, and there is a knock on the door of his flat.

This was a heartwrenching, heartwarming story of a young man forced by circumstance to become an instant dad. It's a quick read - it's emotional and the author hits the tone just right in terms of giving the characters their own voice. Yes, I would have liked a bit more resolution, and a bit more insight into the two close female friends of the dad, but overall this is a lovely read about growing into responsibility and love.
If you can suspend your disbelief far enough to accept that a mother would send away her 5 year old son to a man she doesn't know if she can trust at all, and that that mother's best friend would for some reason leave the child with that man without ever checking in again (why???), then this book had some sweet moments. I did like Luke and he was a pretty believable 5 year old. I did not like how an editor didn't catch phrases like "TSP's presence in the hospital was profoundly affecting me." I mean, you could try to show me what the emotion actually is. This is just cardboard language.
This was such a lovely read. It seemed real even though 5 year old Luke being delivered to Johnny in London was a very dramatic touch. Basing the love story around song was so appropriate for the characters concerned. My heart strings were pulled and I cried. A lovely story of friendship between Johnny and Will, and then with TSP and Susan, and the friendship between Georgia and Luke is heartwarming. Just a lovely read. #netgalley #songsforyourmother
Songs for Your Mother was a very quick and engaging book and once I started it I couldn't put it down. Bitter sweet, it brought a tear to my eye a time or two.
Filled with the regret of paths not taken due to fate and personal choices, Johnny is surprised one morning to find 5 year old Luke on his doorstep. What follows is a sweet story as Johnny learns to be a Dad and Luke learns to cope with all the changes in his world. *Some language
This was a “nice” read. It wasn’t especially riveting or even edited very well, and the characters and overall storyline lacked genuine authenticity, but it felt written by a true romantic with an affection for destiny. My own romantic and idealistic self found the story of love at first site and all tragic/heartwarming/sad events that followed enjoyable enough to read. I’d give it around 2.5 - 3 stars.
One of those rare reads where you both want to keep reading but also want to try to restrain yourself because you don't want it to end. I loved this book. The characters, the plot and the raw emotions of greif all weaved together to create something really powerful. I can't believe this is a debut novel!
