Bent on destruction, the Beast cuts a terrible swathe through towns and countryside, accompanied by its lone herald, the Daughter. A fable about the cycle of ruin and rebirth, perseverance, duty, and a grim hope.
A blazing and beautiful fable. I picked this up due to my immediate enrapture with the art style, and was pleasantly surprised by a story just as captivating. I find comics this size often too vague or too vignette-y, struggling to align narrative and length, but this tale fits itself snugly but ferociously into these pages.
The chosen daughter follows the beast of destruction.
Wolvendaughter demonstrates pretty effectively how powerful perspectives can be and brings along the reader to question their own judgement of the events that take place.
In an endless cycle of destruction, hatred, and rebirth, is it truly the fault of the Daughter for leading the beast? The Beast for acting upon its hatred? The people for retaliating and seeking vengeance for their loss?
Ver's illustrations for the story add a wonderfully colourful meaning to the story they're telling.
Shockingly few reviews on here considering this is Eisner nominated... Wolvendaughter is beautiful and a great thing in a small package, or a very large, wolf-draped package. The people within are wonderfully drawn, and the imagery of fire broils and burns in such a specific and terrible way. However, I think that the art is not entirely met by its story, which is clean and simple but in that simplicity has no real desire to explain anything to the audience. This does lessen the human impact of the story, which still feels like a myth of some kind-- something which in its abstraction could be read as a narrative, but is more an explanation of supernatural phenomena. It leaves me with a lot of questions on the psychology of the Wolvendaughters, especially given a spoiler near the end, but perhaps you're not someone who feels like these questions need answers. Regardless, I would recommend feasting your eyes upon this, and if someone else has more cohesive theories on the "why" rather than the "how"... yeah.
I sought out this title just after it received a 2022 Eisner nomination for “Best Single Issue”. I wasn’t familiar with the writer or the publisher. I purchased the digital download, which was about 40 pages of content. The art was appealing. The story was interesting and unique. However, it personally didn’t blow me away. My expectations were understandably high. Considering the thousands of eligible books released in 2021, this book didn’t seem to merit the distinction for one of the five coveted Eisner nominations in the category of “Best Single Issue”. Definitely good, but not outstanding.
"Would you forgive the beast?" "... I would." "And you believe others would, too?" "If they understood... yes."
I was desperately trying to understand what was going on (while appreciating the stunning art) until finally everything clicked and I finished reading in awe. Beautiful artwork and fascinating (and unsettling) story.
The story and the world Ver built are stunning and full of life; I'd love to read and experience more of this order and what else is going on in the world. The art is beautiful and really helps to tell the story, and tells much more than the words do at times.
really lovely colours and textures and a beautiful cyclical fantasy story! really reminiscent of stages of rot or nimona to me, one of the most beautiful short story comics I've read in a while (and yes I reread it right after the first go)
It is beautifully drawn and has this wonderfully dreamlike quality where there is clearly an intention but you're free to add some interpretation into the mix to make it more significant to you personally. It's wonderful.
Another Quindrie Press banger. Set in fantasy land in a shamanic adjacent society, where one girl is chosen every cycle to follow the beast of the apocalypse as it destroys everything on it path. The world is interesting and intriguing, and in big part due to Her's gorgeous art and crazy designs
Wow what a concept! So poetic and unsettling. I loved the soft art style- it gave the dark story an ethereal feeling and really worked well with the smoke and flames.
Lovely artwork and with an interesting fable to support. I found most panels went with impact over clarity, which was visually stunning but narratively stunting.
