WHAT IF THE WIDE-EYED WALLOPERS ON YOUTUBE WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG?If you have ever wanted to refuse a vaccine while laying on the flat earth, looking up at the moon that we never landed on, listening to the very much alive Elvis new duet with Tupac, then this is the book for you!None of that happens in this book but you have the right stuff my friend!Join Jim's discovery of all things secret that those damn elite Marxists keep lying about, there are only two ways to the truth, this book or a YouTube video made by an angry middle-aged white man, I am also a middle-aged white man and sometimes angry so you know what I'm telling you must be true!
Simon carr is, well he is me, hello. I write comedy Sci-fi and horror books. I started writing in 2018. I am severely dyslexic, on the very high end of the scale. So, writing a book was just me being defiant really, doing something I ought never to have been capable of doing.
I really enjoyed writing my first book, Space And Stuff, so I carried on writing. That makes it sound a lot simpler than it was, but after a lot of learning and editing; so much editing! And going through proofreaders at a rate of knotts, I got my books to a standard that only made a few grammar Nazis heads explode; so it will have to do.
I am from Blackburn in the UK, born in the summer of 1976. I have actually won three awards for my books, I know! I was as surprised as you are. If perfect grammar is your thing then you might want to give them a miss, but if you like satire and goofy scenarios I might be what you have been looking for.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy although it may have been a read now. This is hard to give a review because I don't know if it was the Galley or what but I found it hard to read due to some formatting quirks. I am sure the published copy is cleaner. While the premise and the plot intrigued me i found it hard to get past above flaw and fact there were routine grammar and spelling errors. On the positive side it seemed like a fun book to write and at least some of that sense of fun bled through to the reader. The humor although suffers the occasional miss is overall good.
This book had me giggling all the way thru to a great ending that came all to soon. The characters are developed in a way that supports the insane world of conspiracy theorists laid bare. The plot is drawn from our current culture of Internet absurdity. While there are references to current players and events it should hold up well for future readers. The world building is simply a mirror of our world held up in our faces. The story itself is glued together with some really funny satirical adhesive. But it doesn’t take a lot of any of these ingredients to make a great hilarious story because we are living it daily. The true genius is that the author takes our world which is already ridiculous and turns it into a great story. I recommend this book to one and all especially to those walking around with a stick up their you know what. Just reading this book made me feel less cognitive dissonance and more satirically balanced. It has also lowered my blood pressure. YMMV
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Conspiracy theories...real or not? A fun look at the impact the internet can have on spreading false/true thesis in the world, and since our US government and politics is ripe with things like QAnon and the like, U laughed my way through this book posted haste, enjoying ever minute. Recommended 4/5
This is an absurdist sci-fi hero’s journey, featuring an everyman, Jim, who discovers that not only is the world not at all what it appears to be, he is far from what he believes himself to be. The world is as the conspiracy kooks see it, Jim is Satan’s spawn, and it will fall to him and his mildly villainous cohort to save the world from another -- also semi-evil -- faction.
Absurdist stories can get away with all sorts of deus ex machina happenings and logical inconsistencies that would never fly in other genres. This book capitalizes on this fact to some degree. However, one can only really get away with those problematic story elements if the book is: 1.) a laugh-riot of hilarity - such that the reader doesn’t notice or care about those “defects,” or 2.) carefully composed be clear in the face of the bizarreness that is part and parcel of the genre. This book is fully neither. Don’t get me wrong; it’s an amusing story with some genuinely humorous events and turns of phrase. However, it also has more fun with plays on the word “Uranus” than anyone other than an eight-year-old boy has a right to have. While it has its moments, some of the humor feels forced, and so the overall effect isn’t likely to remind readers of the work of Douglas Adams.
If you’re looking for a carefree read that will give you a chuckle here and there, give this book a look. But I can’t say that I got drawn into it to the point that I was desensitized to its spasticity.
Simon never fails to deliver. He does so with incisive and highly observant wit and a cutting but never malicious humour that at times can leave you breathless and crying with laughter. I’ve had more WTF! looks off my cats since I started reading Simon’s books than I’ve ever had before. I will not compare Simon Carr to other authors as that would do him an injustice, there’s only one Simon Carr. If you’re a fan of whimsy, flights of absurdity, totally believable and recognisably relatable characters, I’ve been an altar-boy to his priests and lived next door to more than one Karen, if this your cup of tea or bottle of Aldi plonk then Simon is your man. Simon has a truly awesome sense of humour and an ability to see the extreme in the banal.
I received this ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review. First of all, let me say, I love a good Sci-Fi, Thriller, Action, Comedy. And this book has it all. Simon Carr does a great job of rolling up almost all our conspiracy theories and bundling them into one big mockery of the human race. Excellent reading that had me laughing almost nonstop for the entire work. But it does make you think, who is running the show? #Sheeple #NetGalley
This book is genuinely funny. The conspiracy theories are right. The Antichtis is chasing the Uranian that crashed at Roswell etc.
But there is a big problem. I won't beat around the bush. The author is dyslexic. The book was self published. Nobody corrected the innumerable grammatical errors, typos and misspellings. I found it very hard to read.
I was given a free copy of this for an honest review. Yet another great book from simon carr. This is such a crazy book. I’ve always wondered how cables always get tangled up even when they’ve been plugged in. Now I know it’s all a conspiracy ha ha how much trouble can a small group of people cause in the most hilarious ways!? You’ll have to read to find out
All he wants is to get answers to all the strange events that has arrived. They want him to join them. Will he join? Will he get the answers? See if he gets the answers
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you've ever wondered just what life would be like if all of those conspiracy theories that people believe in were actually real, then this book is for you. You can join Jim as he, too, learns that everything he thought was real wasn't and everything he thought wasn't actually was. And that includes the earth being flat.
With typical Simon Carr comedy, Jim's life goes nuts and he is suddenly involved in something that he's not sure he ever wanted to be, especially as he rather likes the effects of gravity.
While I still think listening to Carr's novels provides a better experience than reading, I did not particularly care for the narrator of this audiobook, vertchangelo. It wasn't necessarily bad. Rather, it was very clear that vertchangelo doesn't have much experience with narrating audiobooks. His performance did get better as the book went on, but it never reached the level of good. At the same time, I can't necessarily specifically identify what it was that was missing, just that something was.
Of course, the shortcoming of this narrator may also be because all of the other narrators I've listened to for Carr's novels have all been so good. Even though this narrator was not as good as the others I have listened to, I still think listening to this book enhances the experience, and I encourage you to do so if you can.
I have read several of Simon Carr’s novels. It amazes me that he can write in several different voices and makes them all laugh out laugh funny. This novel focuses on the current wild and zany conspiracy stories. There is no such thing as world building, or character development, you are planted right in the middle of the conspiracy. Jim our protagonist has the job of spreading evil around the world in the form of conspiracies. He presents these conspiracies as practical jokes, sometimes widespread misinformation, some obnoxious attitudes that he presents as facts of life. Overall we are to believe all of his communications to be true, and factual. You throw all of this together and it is one heck of a hilarious read! I received a free copy of this book via StoryOrigin and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I feel like I've said this before, but I'll say it again... Carr at his best here. This must be Carr's biggest and best satire of all. This really has it all--the best of Carr in every way. If you're familiar with and a fan of Carr and the Apocalypse Blockers, you'll love this one, possibly best of all so far. I laughed till my sides hurt and I cried. I can't get enough of the jokes--sometimes you can't finish one before the next begins, and if you're anything like me, you'll be begging for more, along with perhaps a bit of mercy. No, you probably won't want any mercy, let's just be honest! You'll want Carr to keep it coming and keep it the same! This is a must-read for Carr fans. If you are not already a fan, maybe start elsewhere, cuz this isn't for the faint of heart. This goes right in and never stops. There's zero subtlety here.
I enjoyed this ridiculous story written by Simon Carr. The story revolved around a young man who was thrust into a world where all conspiracies are true. The tale was interesting, funny, and contemporary. My only caveat is that some of the humor becomes offensive. Vertchangelo's narration was just okay. In his performance, some of the words were muddled, plus there were times when his tone was good but at others, he seemed bored or disinterested in the material. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
I enjoyed Sheeple, populated with fantastical creatures, death by sassy comeback, and commentary on the state of the world today, featuring Carl, my favourite alien lizard. Another hilarious episode of Jim and his motley crew's attempt to save the known universe. Wait, what? Known? We're told This Is How Things Are by the global technobro elite shrieking Look Over There! while they pick our pockets, but what if, as the author says, "The wide-eyed wallopers were right all along?" Shock horror! Read Sheeple and find out.
Sheeple is another example of why Simon Carr is such a great author. I could easily relate to the MC and other characters, the world is well developed and mimics our current one, all while being a hilarious introspective ride. I look forward to what Simon Carr writes next! Audio Version: This is my first time listening to anything narrated by Vertchangelo and he did a good job with the story.
Weeeeelllll then every conspiracy theory out there an few that surprised me. One thing though American Football is played on a field, not a pitch. Also that particular super bowl the Rams cheated their way to play there. Ok aside from that loved the book. Thank you again Mr. Carr
