Halstead House

You know when you watch a hallmark movie and it's cute and sweet but cheesy? This book was like that but it wasn't at all cheesy. It was beautiful and uplifting and it made my already full and romantic not at all grinchy heart grow three sizes. You spend the whole read cheering on Grace SO much. Everything she does, you want to make a giant sign and a parade and have her be the grand marshal. When she back slides in her growth, you still want the sign and parade situation because she's still so amazing (I'm 100% sure there's a personal lesson here that I could learn. But who knows if I will. (Spoiler alert: I won't. ))
Lucas is a tall, broody hero that you just desperately want to understand because you are so sure it'll be worth the effort.
The side characters are hilarious and give great depth and layers to the overall story. I wish I could have met Aunt Mary but since she's not real, memories of her in the book are essentially the same thing. Ana is seriously so fun and Marshal is a sweetheart. Chef Lou with his fake accent- I'm picturing the Chef from Little Mermaid and it's excellent. Eliza is a wonderful surrogate mom and I'm so happy this story all worked out so beautifully.

Wow, does Aspen Hadley know how to tell a story! This book is still giving me book hangover and I finished it 3 days ago but I can's stay away so I just keep going back to re-read my favorite parts.
The first third of the book is more women's fiction than romance but I loved it and it was absolutely necessary to the story. Grace is such a complex character and there was so much of her story to tell before getting to the romance.
Grace is 25 years old but has never really been out on her own. Her manipulative and guilt-tripping mother has ruled every inch of her life until Grace decides to make a break for freedom with an extended visit to Halstead House, the family home of a woman who had been like a grandmother to her.
Now, despite the fact that the first part of the book is fabulously written, I know you die-hard romance fans are going to get itchy waiting for the swoony to show up but let me tell you, not only is the beginning of the book amazing in it's own right, but the romance is WORTH THE WAIT!
Lucas Halstead keeps Grace at arms length at first but as they get to know each other, he realizes she is not like other women he knows. There is so much tension and chemistry in their slow burn romance and I loved every.single.page of it! Add in some great side characters, a beautiful setting, and lots of character growth and it is no surprise that this was a 5 star read.
I absolutely adored this book and it is one you do not want to miss! Trust me, just pick it up and read it. And then you can thank me later.

Grace has heard about Halstead House from her honorary grandma her whole life, and on her 25th birthday, she decides to finally get out from under her controlling mother’s thumb and go for an extended visit. It’s only then she truly begins to figure out who exactly Grace is.
I’m used to reading romantic comedies from Aspen, but this book is more of a thought-provoking sweet romance and not so much a romantic comedy. And that’s ok. Even though it was different than I’ve come to expect from her, it’s still a really good book! I really enjoyed it! And I’ve added Lavender Island and Halstead House to my list of fictional (I’m assuming) places that I’d love to visit. I guess I’ll just have to find a gulf coast town to visit one day.

I borrowed this book on Kindle Unlimited and ordered the paperback as soon as I finished.
Halstead House could be a more raw read for anyone who felt like their transition to adulthood was very externally controlled and like they needed to present a particular image to the outside world. The main character is 25 as the story opens and making her first big life choice without parental approval.
I loved so many things about this story and it solidified Aspen Hadley's place as one of my favorite new author discoveries of 2022.
Halstead House could be a more raw read for anyone who felt like their transition to adulthood was very externally controlled and like they needed to present a particular image to the outside world. The main character is 25 as the story opens and making her first big life choice without parental approval.

Making her 25th birthday wish come true, Grace has set off to a beautiful place she’s always wanted to see and away from her controlling mother. It’s there that she starts to feel like she’s finding who she was meant to be- trying out a new job, making new friends and exploring a new place. Enter John Lucas Halstead (his name is just so fancy, right?) and you’ve got a sweet little romance a brewin’ too!
Halstead House is full of fun side characters and a feel-good vibe that’ll make you not want to put it down. This is a good, clean women’s fiction novel that I enjoyed and definitely recommend. It has a regency romance feel, but in a contemporary setting. It’s by far, my favorite book this author has written.

This was one of those books I didn’t want to put down! I loved the way Aspen Hadley wrote this one. Her plot was engaging, her characters were fantastic and the location is just what I wanted for a summer read.
Let’s start with the characters. Grace is the voice of the story. I loved seeing things through her eyes. She’s a young woman who has been under her mother’s thumb her whole life without realizing it. It was really fun, as a reader, to watch her step away and learn who she was. I loved watching her make her first friends and learn to stand up for herself. And her journey to understand her relationship with her mother was great too. Grace is so complicated!
I loved the plot! It takes Grace on her self discovery journey. And it leads her to who she should be in an interesting way.
And Halstead House. It’s the perfect setting! Halstead House is located on Lavender Island in the Gulf of Mexico, at least in the novel. I have no idea if this is really a place, but the author made it come alive and seem real. This setting really piqued my imagination. I loved the way the author described it and populated it with an amazing family who take Grace in as one of their own.
This book is one you won’t want to miss!

What good are words when I cannot express my love for this book and basically all of Aspen Hadley's books? Backstory: Simply Starstruck was my first read from her and she will always be an auto- buy, no questions asked. Take my money 💸🎶"I will climb every mountain, swim every ocean" 🎶 Or simply press add to cart.
Alright now that I have fangirled, can we talk about my girl Grace? I love her struggle to discover who she wants to be instead of who her mother wants her to be and what better way to do that, then running away to an island that your adopted grandma grew up on. Alright, the island probably wasn't far enough from Grace's crazy mother but you know, life's journey doesn't come with bright, flashing warning signs or hurricane sirens.
I adored the friendships Grace receives. (Oh, Ana!). It was such a great balance of it with the added bonus of romance later in the story. Hello John Lucas. You can be my pack mule any day.
In my husband's words, "You read that one pretty quickly." This is a compliment from him to me since he loves my reading skills. So it's a compliment to the author as well. 😂
This book is perfect for a vacation trip to the beach or long drive or whatever. Seriously, I could would describe it as woman's fiction with a great realistic touch of romance.

I have loved everything that I have read of Aspen Hadley’s, and Halstead House is no exception. I will say that although this story does have a fantastic, sweet love story, it starts off as more of a journey of self discovery and growth for Grace that is so wonderful in itself. I absolutely adore the friendship between Grace and Ana—I think Ana is one of the best friend characters that I have ever read. And let’s not forget swoon-worthy Lucas and their amazing slow-burn, unexpected (to them), chemistry-filled romance.
Things I Loved:
-Sneak attack therapy
-Eliza induced shopping trip trio
-Ana aka tiny bulldozer
-Asking to be friends
-Fractured buttocks
-Forehead kisses & meaningful hugs
-Kissing in a sketchy alley
-“Twitterpation is the kryptonite of dignity.”
-“After everything you’ve been through, and all the changes you’ve made since coming here, if you don’t think fighting for someone you love is worth it, then you’ve learned nothing of real value.”

⛱ I already knew this story was inspired by Aspen's trip to Galveston, TX and living in DFW, this seriously made me want to plan a trip like NOW!! It's super atmospheric and I swear I could hear the ocean and feel the sand between my toes.

⛱ The story of Grace and Lucas took a little longer then I preferred to get started....mainly because I'm just such a sucker for a love story!!! Once I got 30% in though, I couldn't put it down!!!

The deprogramming of a Stepford Daughter!
The story is as much women's fiction as it is romance, and it's excellent at both!
Grace is a young woman who has been emotionally smothered & manipulated by her widowed mother virtually all her life. Fortunately, she was also blessed to have had a loving soul who acted as her surrogate grandmother, and when her life becomes more than she can stand, she runs away to visit the family manor her foster grandmother used to tell her stories about.
The story is immediately engaging and immersive. I was readily caught up in all the emotions & confusions of Grace's life as she wrestles with "untangling" her life from her very own Mother Gothel - with help from her "Great Island Therapist" and a supportive group of coworkers who become her friends & surrogate family
The romance with the brooding Lucas is a slow burn that is worth waiting for as Grace overcomes her mix of fear & the unusual sort of naivete her upbringing has forced on her.
I'm already looking forward to reading this over again! 😊

3.5. This book fell a little short of her other ones for me. Her other ones were so good! This was just ok for me. Didn’t seem to have as much spice. And I had a hard time thinking that anyone’s mom could act like the toward them. But it did make me think about my own relationships with my children! So I guess that was good. I did like Lucas a lot though. I also really liked grace and the chance she took on her own life and venturing out on her own. And I really liked Ana-Graces friend that helps her to get out of her shell a little bit. So maybe I liked it more than I thought! 🤪

Grace has been emotionally and mentally abused by her mother, and she FINALLY escapes far away to discover who she REALLY is and CAN be. The story has a good balance of emotions; sometimes sobering as you see the "drama" or abuse -yet- other times it's joyful and humorous watching Grace break away from it. Some might say this story is too predictable, but if you look through Grace's eyes... you feel pity and have patience with her naivete as a twenty-five year old woman. Her self discovery and the friendships formed on Lavender Island, are heartwarming... and overall, it made for ME a perfect "beach read".
I would be interested in reading more books by this author. I appreciated this clean, meaningful read!

Oh, my dear Mrs. Hadley,
You have given me such a gift! I have finished your book with so much happiness in my heart and I feel as though I have just made friends with a whole new group of people. And an island. And being a person who doesn’t love water or sand, that’s really saying something.
I am absolutely in love with Grace’s development through this book. Her Island Therapy Sessions with Ana were so well thought-out and absolutely perfect for what Grace needed. I loved how she found people who gently worked her out of her shell and helped her find her true self. They didn’t want to change her, they wanted to open her eyes. That was so important to me! And also, thank you for helping Grace see she needed to take care of herself before inviting romance on the scene. That’s a big deal!
I’ll be honest, I didn’t like Lucas much at first. But whoo boy, he sure grew on me!! I doubt there could have been anyone more perfect for Grace. The way they worked together to deepen and strengthen their relationship was perfection! And those kissing scenes? Give me a cool glass of water!
I adore Ana and Eliza and Marshall and Chef Lou. Absolutely love them and I want them in my circle forever and always. And maybe a story for Ana. Yes? Please? And thank you.
Thank you, Mrs. Hadley, for crafting such a beautiful story and being brave enough to share it. It was the perfect balance of women’s fiction and romance, humor and introspection, and was artfully, beautifully done. I am quite happy with the result and inspired by your bravery.

You have given me such a gift! I have finished your book with so much happiness in my heart and I feel as though I have just made friends with a whole new group of people. And an island. And being a person who doesn’t love water or sand, that’s really saying something.
I am absolutely in love with Grace’s development through this book. Her Island Therapy Sessions with Ana were so well thought-out and absolutely perfect for what Grace needed. I loved how she found people who gently worked her out of her shell and helped her find her true self. They didn’t want to change her, they wanted to open her eyes. That was so important to me! And also, thank you for helping Grace see she needed to take care of herself before inviting romance on the scene. That’s a big deal!
I’ll be honest, I didn’t like Lucas much at first. But whoo boy, he sure grew on me!! I doubt there could have been anyone more perfect for Grace. The way they worked together to deepen and strengthen their relationship was perfection! And those kissing scenes? Give me a cool glass of water!
I adore Ana and Eliza and Marshall and Chef Lou. Absolutely love them and I want them in my circle forever and always. And maybe a story for Ana. Yes? Please? And thank you.

This was an enjoyable story. More of a women’s fiction with a dash of romance. Grace was a likable character. Fled from a controlling (I thought abusive) relationship with her mother to the small town of Lavender Island. Which was a really charming setting. For the first time in her life, she is discovering who she really is. With the help of her new friend Ana (I’m hoping Ana gets her own book, she was awesome!). I liked Grace and the growth she goes through. I liked the romance, but would have maybe tweaked things a bit. Had Lucas around a bit more, but I get why things were done the way they were. Good story and characters.

Halstead House by Aspen Hadley makes a lovely summer read. The descriptions of Lavender Island and Halstead House gave me all the beach vibes. With a cast of unique characters to support Grace, the story explored Grace’s journey to discover who she truly is as she opens her mind to new experiences and healthier ways of thinking. I cheered as she made her own decisions and did the hard work of setting boundaries with her mother.
Halstead House started off a bit slow as Grace makes her vacation escape from her extremely structured life. It took a bit longer than I would have preferred for the friendship between Lucas and Grace to commence. Not too much later, all the romance came into play. Grace and Lucas have chemistry and lots of kissing scenes, but the romance stays clean.
Halstead House by Aspen Hadley will likely appeal to readers who enjoy clean, contemporary romances with depth and some touches of humor. This is the first novel I’ve read by Aspen Hadley and I’m glad I have her other books waiting on my shelf. Four stars!

Halstead House is a beautiful women's fiction novel that not only was incredibly well-written, but it was inspiring and the slow burn romance between Grace and Lucas made the end even more sweet than I could have dreamed of.
I really enjoyed this book. I have read Aspen Hadley's other novels, but there was something about this one that was just extra special. I love that it was Grace's personal story about her finding herself and making choices based on her wants and needs. Her growth was beautiful to watch unfold and had a bit of a coming-of-age type of vibe, but as an adult showcasing there isn't a time frame for self-discovery.
I also enjoyed that there was a romance element to this book. It takes most the story to build up, but I think it was perfect for the novel. By the time the romance really took hold, Grace was in a better place and I felt like it added more depth and weight to the foundation of her and Lucas's story.

I have been hearing so much about this author that I was thrilled to get my hands on this one. This is my first Aspen Hadley book and I have to say, I think I’m hooked. The characters were all so loveable…well, except that mom. Wow! Brace yourselves for that hurricane! (PS never have I ever been more grateful for the relationship I have with my mom). I did however, love the journey it provided for Grace to find out what SHE wanted in life. I felt that Halstead House may actually have some actual magical powers because it felt like home when I read it. I loved the descriptions this author used, I was transported to the gulf and enjoyed a vacation without leaving my home. The romance was clean, and so fun to sit back and relax with. I read this cover to cover in less than 24 hours so prepare yourselves to clear your schedule when you read!

This is my first Aspen Hadley book even though I own two but haven’t gotten to read yet 🙈 but I really enjoyed this book so those others will be moved up my backlist of never ending tbr.

This starts out slower for a RomCom and is almost a women’s fiction but the growth is amazing and poor Grace has dealt with a lot. So no wonder it’ll take years to overcome the years of emotional abuse.

I really loved this story! It felt like more of a coming-of-age story than a romance, but I also loved the romance part! Grace has just turned 25 when the story starts and realizes that she has been controlled her entire life by her mother. Grace feels like there may be a "wolf" hidden somewhere in her sheep's clothing - and takes a 3-month sabbatical (without asking her mother's permission) and buys a ticket to Lavender Island to see the house and family that her beloved Mary (her surrogate grandmother who had passed away several years ago) had talked so much about. She found so much more than she was expecting at Halstead House.
Seriously, this book makes me want to go and read every book that Aspen Hadley has ever written!

The Halstead House is an inspiring and enjoyable read! I loved that it was light and fun yet full of meaning too! Grace is getting away from a stressful life to search out Aunt Mary’s childhood home. She hopes for an incredible and life changing trip… Abe she gets it! Watching her grow and learn to love life instead of hide is beautiful.
Grace made some incredible friends while at Halstead house! Ana was my favorite and she is such a great friend from the start. Helping Grace relax and enjoy life. I just love their friendship and Ana’s antics. Ana just made me smile and think what an incredible friend she is.
Graces mom is quite the person… I fell awful that Grace had to grow up with the constant nagging and feeling like don’t live up to those high standards. Getting away from her was the best thing Grace could do. Grace showed such bravery by removing herself from the situation and taking on her own life and finding out who she is deep down.
I enjoyed the slow build and intro to Lucas and their relationship. First focusing on Grace and her growth while sprinkling Lucas created so much tension. Lucas seems so standoffish most of the book, but when he opens up… whew. These two are perfect for each other and I enjoyed watching their story unfold.
Loved how you could feel all the feels… anxious, freedom, worry, excitement, tension, awkwardness, sadness, happiness, relief.

Loved it
I read this within two days and that was because life kept getting in the way. This is a book that once you open you'll want to read it in one sitting. I enjoyed the book that much. I loved all the characters. The aunt, Chef Louie, Ana, Marshall were all so wonderful and really a strength to Grace and the story. If this series gets turned into a series I'm game! I found the Aunt charming, pleasant, personable, and believable. Ana was solid and I enjoyed her humor and personality. The writing was such I really emphatized with Grace and rooted for her and for her and Lucas to be a success so very much. The difficult topic of dealing with the aftermath of being a child with a toxic parent was well done. I think how the story unfolded in the way Grace grew, found herself, and the relationships she developed was so good. I loved seeing her emerge. Good metaphors, imagery and felt realistic. Lucas turned into the most wonderful H for Grace. They were a wonderful team. I thought how the romance part of this story was written was gold. So sweet and subtle. Plenty of moments that can make your heart twitterpatter (totally makes sense after reading the story), made me smile, and think 'aww'

Beach read that surpasses my expectations 100%. The characters are well written, likable (for the most part), enjoyable, and more than two dimentional. The writing is phenomenal. The journey that Grace takes to become her best self is a coming of age story that is good for all ages. The full cast of characters at Halstead House run the gamit, cute, quirky, serious, French (well at least a passable french accent), and welcoming. I can't wait to read more of the same from this author.

Beautifully Done
I love Hadley’s books. Many romance authors who share their work on kindle unlimited seem to post the same kind of story repeatedly, with different wrappings. Hadley takes the time to craft unique novels that dive into both character and story development. I also love that she keeps it clean while letting sparks fly. She isn’t afraid to push her characters in places they’re afraid to go. We get to see them take a hard look at themselves and figure out what to do with what they discover there. The trial in doing so isn’t minimized; you feel the push and pull of it right alongside them. I appreciate that the love story in this novel is just as meaningful to the character’s development as it is to my enjoyment…. Lol. To be honest, I’m here for the romance… and I’m grateful it’s given its due. I need that to keep me invested. All in all, this is a beautiful book of self discovery as a young woman finds herself overcoming a history of emotional and mental manipulation, to fall in love with herself and find support in that while falling in love with a new life, a newfound family, and a beautiful man.

I tried to like it! I have really liked her other books! I was so looking forward to this one but I could not get over how slow it was developing!
Way too much detail on things not important. I didn't care to take an actually tour of the Halstead House but that's what I felt she was trying to do.
I got one page 11% in where John Lucus is introduced where I thought, "oh good, it's about to get exciting." And then it was over and it was just hard to get into all the little conversations and details.
I get she wanted her readers to have a sense of who Grace was, and I liked Grace well enough, but I felt that could have been shared without the story instead of dropping it all in the front of the story.
I stopped reading at 16% because there are so many good books that grip me from the beginning, I hate to force myself to keep reading.
After reading everyone's reviews maybe I should give it another chance, buy today is not that day. I don't have the patience for a so so book right now.

Wow.
I have to say, this book…. Was a quiet powerhouse. There are some truths that only those who’ve lived it can fully resonate. When I read the initial excerpt I wasn’t sure if I wanted to even read it, even though the premise was lovely. I am so so glad to have taken the time.
The biggest revelation can sometimes come in the quietest moments, when you realize what you’ve been feeling is real, and you can’t unsee what you’ve finally seen.
There is so much to love about this book. It’s a celebration about being flawed and human, the magic of found family, resilience and love. I wasn’t sure about Lucas at first, but he’s definitely worth hanging in there for. This book definitely kept me up way past bedtime, but it was totally worth it. Thank you Ms Hadley for a fantastic read.

Another great book!
This was another fun story by Aspen Hadley. It had me rooting for Grace from the beginning, because everyone deserves their happily ever after. The story resonated with me especially because a lot of us feel the need to be people-pleasers rather than using our voices. Grace finds her voice and, even though it's difficult, she learns to take a stand for herself. I enjoyed going on that journey with her. I liked witnessing her friendship (and sneak-attack therapy) with Ana. And I loved when both Grace and Lucas let their walls down to form a friendship that lead to love. Their kisses were sweet with just a hint of spice.
This is a clean romance book: no swearing and no sex.

This book was just an awesome feel good book! It was filled with friendships, exploring new beginnings, and branching out on your own! It was really inspiring to read about a woman who set out on an adventure by herself for the first time in her life. I think everyone will be able to relate to Grace's journey for personal growth.
The romance in this book was sweet and I would be surprised if everyone doesn't fall at least 85% in love with John Lucas. Read this book if you are looking for new adventures, miss good friends, or looking for inspiration to stand up for yourself.
I would love if this book spun into a series and we got the opportunity to learn more about the other characters!
