The research supporting retrieval practice is overwhelming; it is an effective and essential teaching and learning strategy. Leaders, teachers, students and parents all need to know about this strategy and how it can enhance learning. Retrieval practice is being widely used across schools and the research continues to shape classroom practice.
After the success of Retrieval Research & Resources for every classroom, Kate Jones, an evidence-informed teacher and leader, takes the discussion further, going beyond the background, basics, and benefits of this strategy.
This book focuses on the effective implementation of retrieval practice to support both teachers and leaders to ensure retrieval practice becomes firmly embedded in classroom routines. There are contributions from leading academics and a range of subject specialists reflecting, offering their wisdom and expertise as to how retrieval practice can be utilised to have a positive impact in the classroom and on outcomes.
From the latest research to addressing common mistakes and tackling retrieval practice during a global pandemic, Retrieval Implementing, embedding & reflecting takes a fresh and in-depth look at this tried and tested technique.
Fulfills its brief well in providing some practical guidance and rationale for retrieval practice. At times Jones is a little evangelical but not entirely uncritical of its application (e.g. recognising that interleaving may not always work when teaching chronologically). Includes contributions from a range of fellow travellers, which are mostly interesting and useful, though a couple of whom seemed a bit too enamoured with the 'knowledge curriculum' for my liking (in the sense that knowledge is poured into empty receptacles). This isn't Jones's position but there's a wider debate about the type of education our system should value which this book doesn't really attempt to engage with.
I thought that Kate’s first book on Retrieval Practice was excellent, however as hinted at in the foreword, this is even better. Clear, straight forward and full of examples from great practitioners, this little gem is an essential read if you’re interested in improving student performance and showing our students how to study more effectively. A superb read.
Good information. Reading in 2022 felt like this could have been a couple of blog posts not a whole book. Chapter 3 and 4 skimmed. Chapter one and two excellent and provided some great ideas to implement
Just read it. Great to have a book about the latest research that deals with some of the problems with retrieval practice in a helpful way for teachers.
