New author Finley Quinn's first book, Wolf Moon, was a quick and entertaining read with a strong female lead, sexy mates, a controlling alpha, and a Moon goddess with a plan. I really enjoyed the story a look forward to seeing what happens next in the Kingsrose Renegade series.
Wolf Moon is a single perspective rejected reverse harem. Rosalina "Rosie" Mendoza is the main female character, she's Latina and a good part of her culture is represented in the book. An example of family dynamics, her culture's food, and the Spanish phrases mixed into the story help put emphasis on that. After leaving her pack as a child she's back and living with her grandmother trying to start a new life and join her old pack. Well, things don't go smoothly, the alpha is a jerk who claims she's his mate, then there's an annoying she-wolf who sees her as a threat, and to top it all off the (shifter) fairytale she grew up hearing might not be a fairytale.
Rosie is Mother Moon's chosen, she has chosen Rosie to receive a gift but we don't know what the gift is. What we do know is that while there are fated mates Rosie gets to chose her mates and reject her Fated, the explanation is a little confusing but that's the gist of it. The whole mate situation is complicated in this one, there are the twins Kai and Kao Trivinij both are Asian and hot, a little of their culture is represented and there is Joaquin Santiago who is Cuban and has an alpha type vibe going on. Kai is adorably sweet, caring, and shy, I would consider him an omega in any other story and I can see why she chose him. Then there is his twin brother Kao who seems to put up a mask around people, the charming smooth player with pick-up lines for days, but he as a different side he doesn't really show anyone. Finally, there's Joaquin who has a few issues and is stubborn about the relationship, I understood he had to think about it is a lot but I didn't like the fact he seemed to be avoiding the situation. In fact, there was one moment when he and Rosie had a blowup, he refused to open up while she was being pushy and a little mean but I guess he needs it to take action. The guys are good picks, they are supportive and caring towards Rosie.
Something that I found surprising was that Quinn made the story unique by having a within a story. The main story obviously centers on Rosie and her guys but then Rosie reveals by either flashbacks or telling others the story of her old pack and the Blue Moon Hunters. Delphinium "Del" Young was a werewolf hunter who turned out to be mated to Rosie's brother Javier. It was detailed enough to make me think I either missed a previous series or a prequel to this one. Quinn integrated that story really well into Rosie's and it was very interesting. Not to mention that Del and Javier have little parts in this story which added layers to the story overall. If Quinn wanted to write a prequel story about them I'd be interested.
Wolf Moon was a great first book and an interesting start to the Kingsrose series. I have a few questions rolling around my head that I wouldn't mind getting answered and want Rosie to get better training. The story ended on a cliffhanger, so dramatic, I wonder what's gonna happen next.
