This is honestly just as much canon as anything JK Rowling has written. It brings so much depth to the marauders and makes you feel even more sympathy for what they went though.

This story was something I needed in my life. It wasn't perfect or unpredictable, but it was necessary for me to consume. For more of an explanation, All the Young Dudes (Vol. 1) is a Harry Potter fanfiction, specifically about the Marauders, which, even more specifically, means Harry Potter's parents. It's narrated by Remus Lupin (who is, spoiler alert, a werewolf), Harry Potter's professor, trusted parental figure, and one of the best friends of Harry's dad. The fanfiction itself originates from a site called AO3, and it has recently had a resurgence in popularity, becoming the most popular fanfiction on AO3 at this point. This story is perfect for all Harry Potter fans, especially for those who found themselves obsessed with the Marauder era growing up. Not only was this story entertaining, but it was also professionally written and true to the original characters.
Disclaimer: Just because I read and enjoyed this story does not mean that I support J.K. Rowling or any of her claimed "beliefs". Reading this story did nothing to support Rowling, as Rowling was not the author of this story or involved in its creation in any way.
One of the best elements of this story was definitely the writing, specifically the characterization. This story felt like an extension to the Harry Potter books. The characters acted exactly as I had imagined them, they said things that were perfectly in character and nothing was at all out of character. This story did nothing to change my perception of these beloved characters either. James Potter was perfectly lovable and stupid, just as I pictured him. Sirius Black was cocky and jokey, just like he was supposed to be. Even though made out to be slightly thuggish, Remus Lupin was thoughtful, imaginative, and principled, just as I liked him. Peter was annoying, nosey, and wimpy, and I thoroughly liked hating him most of all.
The writing itself was also excellent. Even though it was written by the mysterious MsKingBean89, who was probably a teenager at the time of writing, I never once had a problem with the writing or the word choice or the sentence structure...and coming from a grammar errorist herself, that's saying a lot, considering that I am fairly often peeved by bad grammar. It truly felt like a real, published book as I read it, and I really appreciated it.
The plot itself wasn't always super entertaining, seeing as first and second year with high-strung eleven and twelve-year-olds can tend to get a little bland, but for the most part, I was fully immersed in the plot. To be honest, there was really no plot, just a bunch of happenings as we watched the Marauders hang out and wreak havoc on the Slytherins. I really enjoyed the parts with Remus and Lily's friendship. I can't wait for the plot to accelerate and dramatize across the following two volumes.
In summation, All the Young Dudes (Vol. 1) is a wonderfully fun detail of what may have happened in the lives of the Marauders, which is unfortunately barely touched during the main Harry Potter series. I hope I can get to the next volume soon, as it's sure to get...how do I say...spicier...as they get older. I need to get my Jily and Wolfstar fix before I disappear off the Internet for a month during the summer.

Honestly, ATYD 1-4 is the biggest comfort read ever. I’ve never had anything that made me feel so happy and warm every damn time like this book does. I sat down and read the whole thing in the space of a day and I have no regrets.
I fully accept this whole thing as cannon. The characterisation is FLAWLESS for all of the marauders. I’m so invested it’s actually ridiculous.
Fully recommended, even to people who don’t like Harry Potter that much, this has a very different vibe (and if I’m honest, the writing is better).

After 572 pages of this masterpiece, I am happy to say this has currently become a hyperfixation of mine, and will be my favourite book (series) of all time.
Obviously since we haven’t met grant or haven’t started wolfstar yet, book 2 will be better.
However, I love the marauders including peter in this book at least with all my heart, and I am sorry for you if you haven’t read this book.
PLEASE READ ASAP ON AO3 or if your like me get a physical copy of the books (spilt into three cause it’s longer than the bible 0-0)

I know I'm three years late to this fic but besties, I am old. Forgive grandma, but I am not on TikTok, so I genuinely had no idea how fucking popular this fic is (25,000 ratings on Goodreads is CRAZY for a fic, and let's not speak of the millions of videos and views on TikTok and other social media platforms). I am flabbergasted. Even in my younger days, when I was actively part of different fandoms (mainly through Tumblr, mainly Harry Potter and Supernatural), I was somehow never into reading fanfiction. I can recall trying to write my own "Bella x Jacob" fic when I was 12 but giving up three chapters in. Let's just say I am happy that those chapters have vanished from the surface of the earth. ;)
A couple of years back I read the humorous Harry Potter fic Oh God Not Again! which retells the events of the series through the lens of an adult!Harry who involuntarily travels back in time and has to relive his years at Hogwarts with the knowledge and perspective of his adult self. Harry decides to fuck up as much shit as possible and tries to make as much money as he can. It's not a serious fic and so I only read it for shits and giggles, BUT IT WAS A GOOD TIME.
As many other people who've enjoyed the Harry Potter series in the past I used to complain that instead of abominations such as The Cursed Child play, J.K. Rowling should focus on the Marauders and write a prequel instead. Now that Rowling has discredited herself for all of eternity and revealed herself as the dangerous TERF that she is I am more than glad that she never touched the Marauders. I wouldn't read anything new by her anyways but I also don't think that this bigoted woman would do her own characters justice. When I came across All the Young Dudes (through a reel on Instagram, I think?) I was immediately intrigued. I've always enjoyed watching Marauder fan videos on YouTube and I love the fancast so much, but I couldn't believe my luck when I figured out that MsKingBean 89 (the woman you are!) actually wrote a 1,800+ pages Marauders fic that is canon compliant and starts with their first year at Hogwarts. I mean, WTF??? What did we do to deserve such a treat??? I was overjoyed.
I started reading the fic on AO3 but 200 pages in I knew that I had to print it out. I simply prefer reading my books in a physical format (especially such long tomes) and I also love designing book covers. This time around, I went for a Penguin Classics inspired design with the wonderful art from Alessia Trunfio. I absolutely love how they turned out. For a closer look you can see my copies here.
I don't read romance novels and I find the smut to be particularly over the top in fanfiction, which is why I usually stay away from fics altogether. One of the reasons why I immediately fell in love with this fic, though, is that instead of focusing on a ship or romance, it's truly a coming-of-age fic. The first book, which tells of the Marauders first four years at Hogwarts, has little to no romance in it; instead, it focuses on the boys' blooming friendship and their silly shenanigans as they try to become the most notorious pranksters Hogwarts has ever seen. I am aware that All the Young Dudes is still a Wolfstar fic, however, it is so drawn out and subtle (if I recall correctly they kiss for the first time in Year 5, 600 pages into the fic lmao) that even I can stomach it.
I don't think that MsKingBean89 is a particularly good writer tbh. Her writing style is fine but nothing special. Everyone calling her the second coming of Shakespeare is tripping but I'll forgive it. :D I still think that this fic has some issues structurally and relies too heavily on the exposition and work that J.K. Rowling did in the original series. I know that's the nature of fanfiction but I think that certain events should've been elaborated upon or given more space/importance, e.g. the creation of the Marauders map. MsKingBean89 never truly explains how the boys figure out the spell and then all of a sudden the map is in full effect. But these are minor complaints.
Overall, I like the changes that she made, like Remus being a foster child and having lost a father to suicide. I also appreciate how she explored the abuse that Sirius (and Regulus) faced at the hands of Walburga. It makes Sirius' character more complex and gave me a new perspective on his behaviour in Order of the Phoenix, when Dumbledore forces him to stay put in his childhood home. I also like what MKB did with Regulus. He's a character I hadn't given much thought to but now I have soft spot for him. I know there's lots of fanfiction out there focusing on him (and oddly his non-canon relationship to James of all people, what's up with that? :D) but I'm not sure if I'll find the perfect fit for me on that front.
The relationship between James and Sirius was my favorite part of this first book. Them being besties made my heart sing. The trust and understanding that the two of them have is unmatched. Both come from pureblood families, both come from wealth. But whereas James grew up sheltered with loving parents, Sirius never knew love. And it makes so much sense that James would take him in. I love their private chats (even if they make Remus and Peter feel excluded), I love how the two share secrets. I LOVE I LOVE I LOVE.
Favorite/notable moments:
● the Marauders meeting on the train (just like Harry and Ron) ("Can we sit here? Everywhere else is full.") and instantly becoming friends is just perfect to me, it makes so much sense
● the Slytherins, Bella and Cissy in particular, calling out to Sirius when he marched up to the Sorting Hat (BESTIES I WAS STRESSED FOR HIM)
● Frank Longbottom being a Gryffindor prefect in Remus' first year, I cry
● "Five hundred years," Sirius said stonily. "Every Black at Hogwarts has been sorted into Slytherin for five hundred years." – it makes so much sense that Sirius initially struggled with being sorted into Gryffindor, that poor boy
● Sirius noticing Remus' scar and how defensive he gets about it, then Sirius deciding to open up, confessing to Remus: "I've got scars, too." – besties, I cried
● Bella threatening to curse Sirius – I AM UPSET
● Lectiuncula Magna – do I need to say more? Sirius figuring out that Remus can't read and coming up with a spell that will facilitate his reading, he's such a pure boy!
● "James and Sirius attempted to convince Slughorn not to give them any homework 'out of respect' for the occasion." - the occasion being Remus' birthday LMAO
● Remus being the initiator of the map and that being the reason why his name is put first on it
● Remus often overhearing Sirius cry in his bed (or in James') - he's so real for that
● the introduction of the girls (Mary, Marlene, Lily) in Year 2 - I love all of them more than life itself
● Sirius revealing that his scars come from his parents using the Lacero curse on their sons - I could cry
● the Marauders figuring out the secret passageway to Honeydukes (if only Draco knew of it in Half-Blood Prince, would've saved him a lot of trouble lmao)
● James and Sirius trying out for the Quidditch team in their second year; Lily comments: "Well, never one without the other." – I AM CRYING
● Sirius forced engagement to Narcissa and both of them being miserable LMAO - that was such a cool original plot point
● Walburga getting Sirius from the Potters' household over Christmas and using a silencing spell on him, and Euphemia having none of it: "We'll have to make the house unplottable, Fleamont. I never want that dreadful woman in my house ever again."
● Sirius only wanting to speak to James after his return to Hogwarts after Christmas break
● Cissy growing Sirius' hair back after Walburga shaved it off – I love that we get some sweet moments with Cissy as well
● "That's my future wife you're talking about." – besties, when I tell you this fic turned me into a Jily shipper, mainly bc I am obsessed with James, he's such a pure soul
● the Marauders looking up the full moon schedule to support Remus as best as they can - TEARS!
● Mary calling the boys out on their pureblood privilege – so fucking needed!
● "Why not?" - "Because Petey-boy, we're going to win." – I CAN'T HANDLE THIS RIGHT NOW
● all the pranks, my favorite was probably the time-changing clock prank :D
● Lily having a thing for Remus, my brain cannot comprehend this ("Why on earth would you want to go out with me, when the most popular boy in school is madly in love with you? He's ten times nicer than me too, you're just too arrogant to see it." – Remus on truth potion is something else, holy hell)
● Sirius unintentionally knocking Regulus out with a bludger, flying as fast as humanly possible to save him from falling – MY POOR HEART
● James giving Sirius the twin mirror after Year 4, so that they can stay in touch over the summer holidays bc Walburga won't allow Sirius to stay at the Potters – BESTIES I AM DONE

Este es el libro que siempre quise leer de J.K Rowling pero nunca hizo mi sueño realidad. Si, estoy hablando de la época de los MERODEADORES.
Este primer volumen se centra en en los primeros 4 años de James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black y Peter Pettigrew en Hogwarts; narrado desde la perspectiva de nada más ni nada menos que por Lupin -que si antes lo amaba, ahora lo amo más-, y nos cuenta como transita su condición de Hombre Lobo, sus transformaciones; por otro lado, cómo se conocieron estos cuatro amigos, sus clases en Hogwarts, el armando del mapa que todos ya conocemos, cómo comenzó la enemistad con Severus Snape y sobre todo las múltiples travesuras que hacían.
Si bien estamos hablando de un fanfic, para mí esta narrado de manera excelente donde tranquilamente podríamos creer que está escrito por dicha autora. Aunque hay algunas cositas que hace que desconfíes si realmente pasaron así, es bastante creíble todo y personalmente, lo puedo colocar como Cannon sin problema.
En resumen lo AMÉ, se lee muy rápido, es muy divertido, los personajes están muy bien caracterizados, es simplemente perfecto y me pone muy triste sabiendo cómo termina todo al final 💔
Sin dudas voy a leer el volumen que sigue. Si les gusta/gustó la época de los Merodeadores está más que recomendado, créanme que es hermoso este libro.
PD: Desde chiquito Peter mostraba su cobardía, hizo que lo odie más (si eso es posible)
PD2: No me maten, pero yo no sentí esas vibras que todo el mundo dice que hay entre Remus y Sirius, yo sólo leí una linda amistad donde vemos como se apoyan entre ellos y los demás. Perdón 🤷♀️
Este primer volumen se centra en en los primeros 4 años de James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black y Peter Pettigrew en Hogwarts; narrado desde la perspectiva de nada más ni nada menos que por Lupin -que si antes lo amaba, ahora lo amo más-, y nos cuenta como transita su condición de Hombre Lobo, sus transformaciones; por otro lado, cómo se conocieron estos cuatro amigos, sus clases en Hogwarts, el armando del mapa que todos ya conocemos, cómo comenzó la enemistad con Severus Snape y sobre todo las múltiples travesuras que hacían.
Si bien estamos hablando de un fanfic, para mí esta narrado de manera excelente donde tranquilamente podríamos creer que está escrito por dicha autora. Aunque hay algunas cositas que hace que desconfíes si realmente pasaron así, es bastante creíble todo y personalmente, lo puedo colocar como Cannon sin problema.
En resumen lo AMÉ, se lee muy rápido, es muy divertido, los personajes están muy bien caracterizados, es simplemente perfecto y me pone muy triste sabiendo cómo termina todo al final 💔
Sin dudas voy a leer el volumen que sigue. Si les gusta/gustó la época de los Merodeadores está más que recomendado, créanme que es hermoso este libro.
PD: Desde chiquito Peter mostraba su cobardía, hizo que lo odie más (si eso es posible)
PD2: No me maten, pero yo no sentí esas vibras que todo el mundo dice que hay entre Remus y Sirius, yo sólo leí una linda amistad donde vemos como se apoyan entre ellos y los demás. Perdón 🤷♀️

Don’t look at me like that, ok. I am weak and desperate for escapism and I had to do it.
This was so addicting I felt like I was on drugs, because I could not stop reading. When I tell you I sat there for a solid 7 hours, butt numb, hair so beyond greasy it could start a fire, eyes gummy, headache brewing — I mean it.
Is this as polished as a published work? No, but it’s not a published work sooo I’m not going to judge it as one. Basically, I had so much fun & this was so flipping cute!!

این کتاب ماجراهای "غارتگران" رو روایت میکنه: جیمز پاتر، سیریوس بلک، ریموس لوپین و پیتر پتیگرو. داستان از دیدگاه ریموس لوپین روایت و از روزی شروع میشه که دامبلدور میره دنبالش و بهش میگه به دنیای جادو تعلق داره.
با وجود اینکه داستان داره سالها قبل از مجموعه هری پاتر اتفاق میفته، ولی به چند دلیل بنظرم باید بعد از هری پاتر خونده شه. اول اینکه خیلی از جزئیات دنیای هاگوارتز تو این کتاب آورده نشده؛ علنا توصیفی در مورد اماکن وجود نداره و خواننده باید از قبل با سیستم مدرسه، اساتیدش ( که عمر نوح دارن)، گروه بندی های مختلف، ارواح مدرسه، مکانهایی مثل سکوی نه و سهچهارم و دهکده هاگزمید و ... آشنا باشه.
مورد بعدی اینه که تو این کتاب با گذشته خیلی از عناصری که توی هری پاتر بوده آشنا میشیم ؛ مثلا شنل نامرئیکننده، نحوه تدوین نقشه هاگوارتزی که دست هری بود و موقعیت افراد مختلف رو تو مدرسه نشون میداد، و حتی زمانی که ولدمورت برای اولین بار شروع به جمع آوری پیروانش میکنه.
غارتگران با خودشون تصمیم میگیرن که تا زمان فارغ التحصیلی، هر چی قانون توی هاگوارتز وجود داره رو حداقل یکبار بشکنن، و ماجراهایی که این وسط بوجود میاد باعث شد من این ۴ نفر رو حتی از هری و دوستاش بیشتر دوست داشته باشم!
داستان خالی از اشکال هم نیست، یکیش اینکه زمان توی داستان به سرعت میگذره و این وسط gapهای زیادی وجود داره، اما خب بعد سالها برگشت به دنیای هاگوارتز اونقدر برام شیرین بود که نهایتا اشکالاتش به چشمم نیومد. اگر جا داشت بیشتر از ۵ ستاره بهش میدادم.😌

It's safe to say I love these boys so much. I'm excited to read about the next years and also very excited to get to know Grant better, because he seems to be really loved character by other fans.

Safe to say baby Wolfstar is also super freaking adorable and I'm so excited to see how they grow and develop further.
