Rebel had been called to the US when she’d been informed that her brother was dying, but she arrived too late. He left behind a devastated wife, two small children, and a load of debt. Rebel stayed to help out as best she could, taking a job at the local hospital, but working conditions there were unbearable, and she had no choice but to quit or kill someone—namely the head nurse. And as a doctor, she had taken an oath to save lives, not take them.
Rodney ran a small practice. He handled the medical care for the local schools and worked at the hospital when needed for emergencies. And when a little boy came into his office to get stitched up from being ambushed by bullies, Rodney knew he had to get to the bottom of the problem. When the boy’s Aunt Rebel shows up and takes over, Rodney instantly knows who she is to him—his mate. Having to approach her with the subject had his cat curling up inside him. He had watched his brothers flounder around with their new mates, and he didn’t want to start off on the wrong foot.
It didn’t take but a minute for Rebel to assess the new situation, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about it. She also needed a job, not a handout. She was a doctor, damn it, and a good one. No man, especially one she didn’t know, was going to order her around. If he thought he could, she’d let him know fast that she was no pushover.

Lots of moving parts to this story...and they all lead back to Dr. Rebel Walsh. When her brother got sick, Rebel moved to the U.S. After his death she's been trying to help her sister in law and her kids. However, the hospital she works for is hostile with nurses and other doctors turning against her and making patients doubt her skill. All because she was born in a foreign country. Things start to turn for the better when Rebel meets Dr. Rodney Marshall and discovers she's his mate. Between dealing with looking into the hospital and employees, the apartment and landlord, as well as trying to deal with the rest of the Marshall clan, Rebel learns she's also a witch. But not just any kind of witch, she's a powerful grand witch and within hours of discovering who she is already has to take care of problems within the witch community. At the end we're left wondering who is going to be the next Marshall mate. The woman who grandad met in the hospital after she lost her mom or will it be the aunt of the young mother who was beaten to death and just gave birth to twins?
If I had one complaint on this book, I really would've liked to have just seen Rebel's accent or her way of talking continue throughout the book and not just when she was angry or frustrated. I mean she was only living in the U.S. for the last 2 years, she's bound to still talk like she's from Scotland.
**I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book**
Dr Rodney Marshall found his mate in Doctor Rebel Walsh, when her nephew comes to his clinic after a run in with some bullies. Rebel has been hepingl her sister in law since her brother died. The hospital she was working at was hostile, didn't like that she was born and raised in another country. She quit and is now working with her mate. Harris is looking into Rebels problems with the hospital, her sister in laws probably getting her deceased husbands life insurance policy and into their creepy land lord. Rebel finds out by accident that she is.a.witch. A.very powerful one.according to a good friend of grandad. Rodney is her familiar. The council has a.job for her and Darin. Granddad brings home a.young woman,. Shannon,. who was passing through when her mother became ill. Now alone.she could.use.some family, and.grandad offers hos to.her. Tragedy strikes a young mother. Two badly abused little girls and their newborn sister and brother,. are in the care of the Marshall family,.while Harris tries to.finder their uncle and aunt, who are in the military. The Avery siblings are a force to be reckoned with. Fun, fast paced and a little steamy. Can't wait to see who is Shannon's mate and who will be Paige's
'Rodney' is Kathi S. Barton's fourth book in her "Marshall's Shadow" series and is filled with all the adventure, drama, angst, chemistry, and romance I've come to expect from one of her books. This time she takes us on Dr. Rodney Marshall's journey and what a journey it becomes!! A small boy comes into the clinic covered in blood begging both Dr. Rodney and his nurse not to call his Aunt. Thinking the child was afraid of the woman he starts to examine him when the woman, his Aunt Dr. Rebel Walsh, barges into the exam room and proceeds to strip the boy down to examine him. Rodney had met her before at a school board meeting and had his suspicions then but now being this close to her, realizes she's his mate. It seems she came to the US when she was notified her brother was dying. Unfortunately, she didn't make it in time to say goodbye to him but she's stayed to help her sister-in-law with their two children and the mess that seems to be consuming them. Once again Ms. Barton has given us a strong, loyal, compassionate, and determined Hero and heroine. There's a bit more action in this one than in the previous stories. Wait until you meet Rebel, Shannon, and Paige. I can't wait to read Heath's story next.
The story continues with the marshalls . Rodney and rebel learn lots of new skills. Introducing lots of new people, but not finding out their purpose. The book ends with everything waiting for the next problem or senario to show. Hope the next book isnt too far away.
