Adapted from coaching strategies, Cake is here to help navigate the difficult special occasions that often leave us wounded, triggered, or worse. With personal narratives and shared stories, readers have the opportunity to both identify with experiences they had difficulty seeing/accepting, or gain an understanding as to why loved ones may struggle with certain things.
I started to read Cake because someone I love struggles with birthdays, and I wanted to figure out how to help them have better birthdays. What the author, Mae Wagner, did surprised me--kinda like a party--by gently digging into my thoughts and feelings, wishes, about my birthdays.
Wagner's vulnerability showcased her genuine overcoming spirit, which she encouraged me to continue doing for myself. Hearing about her life's disappointments and ways she thrives inspired me.
There are aspects of Cake that I will apply to my loved one's birthdays, but let me tell you, I am taking my birthdays to a whole new level. Starting by letting my family and friends know what I want for my birthday. What I really want.
