Divorced, empty-nested, and staring fifty in the eye is every bit as crappy as it sounds. Luckily, life is about to be shaken, not stirred.
When Jules Cavanaugh's flakey dad passes and leaves her his bar in Coastal Florida, it becomes the Hail Mary she needs. Her empty nest becomes a not-so-gilded cage, so before she can talk herself out of it, she packs everything she can in the back of her car and strikes out to start over.
Once she gets there, all is sunshine and fruity cocktails until she finds an odd old book in a hidden safe and a cryptic letter from her father in a secret safety deposit box. At first, she writes it off to his eccentricity until she accidentally summons a storm when her ex pushes her one step too far.
Before Jules can begin to understand the new magic coursing through her veins, she uncovers a corrupt plot to hijack power she doesn't yet understand and destroy all she's come to hold dear. She may be a few hot flashes past her prime ass-kicking years, but she's about to hand out a hard lesson in underestimating the power of experience.
This is book 1 in the A Shot of Midlife Magic Paranormal Women's Fiction series. If you like strong female characters, smartass gargoyles, and hot shifters who know how to treat a woman, then this is the book for you!
I was born and raised in the South and even hung my motorcycle helmet in Colorado for a few months. I've always had a touch of wanderlust and have never feared just packing up and going on new adventures, whether in real life or via the pages of a great book.
When I was a little girl, I didn't want to grow up to be a writer—I wanted to raise unicorns and be a superhero. When those gigs fell through, I chose the next best thing: creating my own magical lands filled with adventure, magic, humor, and romance.
I live in Florida with my two dogs and when I'm not writing or reading, I'm racing motorcycles with my taller, more handsome half, hanging out at the beach, or binge-watching anything magical on Netflix.
I'm eternally grateful for all the people who help make my life what is today - friends, readers, family. No woman is an island.

Ms. Maher has written another fantastic story that kept me glued to the pages. Seriously, I started the book this morning and didn't put it down until I finished it. The characters are all awesome and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better as the series progresses. Jules was really a great heroine as she never gave up throughout the training and the dramatic skirmish near the end. I'm looking forward to May when the next book arrives.
This may seem like the usual plot of 'woman cheated on by husband of 20+ years, empty nester, and need to start over' but Tegan Maher has given it more heart and depth with several surprising twists. Jules' executive husband expects Jules to quietly fade away while he marries his secretary. She does fade but not quietly, moving to Florida to run the tiki bar left to her by the father whom she never knew. But this feisty 40+ year old is going to take hold of life. There she finds not only a way of life she didn't know she needed but strange things start happening to her. This seemingly powerless, friendless woman finds she has both. But with power, there's always a battle to fight and rarely time to prepare. This is going to be a wonderful series with a somewhat different slant to both the story and the non-intrusive but very important, slightly funny romantic angles. Different from Ms. Maher's other series but just as enjoyable and intriguing. I love seeing her grow as an author and try new things. This one really works
I adored this book! I picked it up after another amazing Paranormal Women's Fiction author recommended it. If you're a fan of Wendy Wang, you'll love this book!
What I expected is what I got Older FMC, MMC is a shifter but in his 60s, just looks young No smut, but banter and steam with off screen indicated fun FMC change of life is bigger than expected, she discovers magic and more after her husband leaves her for bubbles. The MMC and FMC are a lovely match and he reminds her of her worth after being left with less self-esteem and feeling less in general.
It was a nice read, has easy going characters. The enemy was not all that scary of world destroying. But was okay. I am not invested enough in the characters or storyline to go into book 2. A good book to read after a book hangover 4 stars
Gave up at 64% but really I'd already lost interest way before then. I liked separate elements of it but not so much as a whole Then again more than halfway through the book and there's barely a plot/ story to speak of yet. Just a bunch of cryptic hints, but no real development of either story or characters. Rushed But mostly I just really could not stand Ronan - he came across as little more than yet another domineering asshole trying to control her... the whole unstable hot/cold thing only made it worse.
As much as I love a good romance, whether it's cozy, steamy, RH, slow, medium, fast burn... jumping into a new romance days after getting unceremoniously dumped by your husband of 20+ years simply does not work for me. For one thing practically speaking they hadn't even so much as started the divorce proceedings yet but also emotionally speaking her world had just been turned upside down and she doesn't take so much as a breather?!? Though I did enjoy her speedy exit with nothing but a note... but apart from that...
Champagne Witches is the first book in a BRAND-NEW series by Tegan Maher. Jules is the kick a** heroine in the story, and she is recently divorced after catching her husband cheating on her. She packs it up and heads to Florida to start a new life.
What Jules doesn't know is that she is magical and very POWERFUL, not only as a witch but as a woman. She is no longer Jules the doormat.
The plot in this book is perfectly paced with a healthy dose of romance between Jules and sexy Alpha shifter Ronan. The characters are seasoned, well written and so relatable as what a woman goes through during her midlife.
I was on the edge of my seat because the action scenes were so well done, I couldn't wait to see what happened next.
This is Tegan Maher at her VERY best! You do not want to miss this book.
What happens when on the same day you send your son off to college, you find out your husband has been cheating on you and spending a lot of the family money on buying the much younger woman a really, really expensive car. You get drunk with the girls and make major life changing decisions, naturally. Which is how our MC finds herself with her own expensive car, moving to Florida of all places, running a bar and living in what turns out to be a magic house. And oh look, maybe she is magic too! This was fun and just like so many other midlife books I have read. The only real difference is: Florida. I enjoyed it and if the other books in the series go on sale, I will defiantly grab them and read them!
Good 1) The apartment was awesome! 2) Series arc was clearly established
Mixed 1) Settings were fun but poorly described 2) Female lead was enjoyable to read but her emotion reactions were too stunted to be realistic (ie no one walks away from twenty years of marriage that unfazed)
Bad 1) World-building was scant and shallow 2) Everything involving her father and her family legacy lacked logic and plausibility 3) Plot was generic and hollow 4) Male love interest's characterization was all over the map 5) Romance was insta-lust with a side of magical bond and lacked any emotional connection 6) Secondary characters had no clear defining characterization 7) Female lead was suppose to be smart, capable, mature and organized but, looking down the barrel of a divorce after twenty-years of marriage with property in common and inherited property on her side, never bothers to contact a lawyer 8) Female lead arrives in town to claim her inherited property but doesn't bother to stop at the lawyer's office processing the will for keys, paperwork, ect 9) Inconsistencies in magic 9a) Female lead magically called up a sandstorm by accident but then can't call up her magic without using her hands? 9b) Female lead's magic spontaneously healed up her aged joints to be pain and creak free but she still has a black eye a week later? 9c) Female lead's magic spontaneously saved her from falling on her face but doesn't save her from being drugged and/or punched? 10) End scene with ex just walking away without any real discussion after coming all the way to Florida made no sense
There are some cool ideas but too much is illogical or just over-the-top silly.
Jules Cavanaugh, devoted wife, and mother of two boys, has just become an empty nester. After dropping off her youngest son at college, she arrives home and finds her horribly insensitive husband with the secretary, Bubbles. After her husband and his hot young thing exit, Jules contacts her best friends who come to both console and celebrate. Soon, Jules decides that it is time to move on, and with the support of her friends, she packs up a few things, leaves a wake of household destruction, and then heads to Coastal Florida in her new sports car. Awaiting her in Coast Florida is a bar that she inherited from her estranged father. Jules' presence is met with curiosity and suspicion, for not even the bartender, her father's closest confidante, knew of Jules' existence. This is not by chance. There is a reason her father has been elusive, and Jules soon discovers just how deep her roots run.
A coming-of-age story often focuses on a teen or pre-teen. This story challenges that concept. Jules becomes the person that she is meant to be; one who is much stronger and wiser and it does not matter that she is in her forties; she rises from the ashes of her marriage and can unconsciously summon storms. She is far more powerful than she realizes and that makes her a threat, as well as places her in danger because she is vulnerable.
I almost wished that I had not devoured this book so quickly because the second book has not been released. Yikes! But, I am patient and doubt that I will forget any of the characters, especially that hellhound!
This book earns three stars as it falls into the middle ground of paranormal/urban fantasy tailored for women in midlife. While it boasts the typical elements—a woman navigating post-cheating husband life, discovering her witch identity, and engaging with a tall, broody, handsome were-person—the overall experience is pedestrian.
The plot, centered around Jules inheriting her late wizard father's Florida bar, held promise but failed to captivate. Despite the intriguing premise, the lack of grit made it a slow read. I would have liked to see Jules in warrior saviour mode in the witch war more than not sure about her attraction to Ronon although they were romantically entangled and grow adults who were meant to save the world!
The magic woven into Jules' character adds an interesting dimension without revealing too many spoilers and sets a good secondary plotline. Her problems with ageing and wanting magic to make her youthful was uninteresting. It was predictable and do women in middle years always want to return to the horrors of youth and acne?
One standout was the enigmatic parrot 🦜, though I maintained a perpetual suspicion 🤨. Predictably, Ronon's character lacked surprises. His big hand covered her tiny one—predictable romantic tropes.
Amidst a few amusing moments involving the parrot and a sock 🧦, the book failed to evoke the excitement found in Maher's other works, like the Witches of Keyhole Lake, I felt less invested, missing the engagement I've experienced with Maher's previous books.
Recommended mainly for those seeking the classic hot shifter jealous lover dynamic, this book might not satisfy readers looking for a more compelling narrative and deeper engagement.
I enjoy Tegan Maker's books. This one was a bit off the weirdness chart. It was a quick read that got weird quickly! I got the feeling that this book was a rush job and not enough time was spent flashing out the characters or the story.
Amazon synopsis: When Jules Cavanaugh's husband dumps her for his annoyingly perky midlife crisis, her empty nest suddenly feels like a not-so-gilded cage. Desperate to put it all behind her, she packs her bags and heads to the bar in Coastal Florida she'd inherited from her father, sight unseen, to start over.
Once she gets there, all is sunshine and fruity cocktails until she finds an odd old book in a hidden safe and a cryptic letter from her father stashed in a secret safety deposit box. At first, she writes it off to his eccentricity, that is, until she accidentally summons a storm when her ex pushes her one step too far.
Before Jules can master the new magic coursing through her veins or come to terms with her intense attraction for the hot, mysterious bartender, she uncovers a corrupt plot to hijack power she doesn't yet understand.
Though she may be a few hot flashes past her prime ass-kicking years, she's about to hand out a hard lesson in underestimating the power of experience.
Jules Cavanaugh has just dropped her youngest son off at college and is looking forward to spending her empty nest with her husband. On her return home, there is a strange car in the driveway and when she goes into the living room, she finds her controlling, conniving husband sitting with his girlfriend, Bubbles and wants a divorce! Besides the kick in the gut, she kicks them out! Then she called her best friends, to console her. She had inherited a bar in Coastal Florida from her absent father and she though maybe that is where she can start a new life. With her friends' encouragement, and a lot of uncertainty she decides to go. And now with a lot of laughs and mistakes while she takes charge of the bar, she feels free. She makes good friends of the regulars in the bar. When she goes up to the apartment above the bar, she checks out the things her father may have left and in doing so, she finds a beautiful necklace and an old book in her father's safe. And now the fun begins! I will not spoil what happens, but with lots of laughs and some changes in Jule's life we are on a wonderful roller coaster ride! I can't wait until the next episode! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
This story deals with a 40+ woman whose husband has had a midlife crisis and decides he wants to be with his secretary, Bubbles. (Yeah that really is her name). What did Jules do? She let her friends talk her into moving to Floria and pay attention to the bar her estranged father left her.
Things go pretty well for Jules. The bar is making money and comes with an apartment that fixes itself according to Jules's desires. AND...Jule's father has left her a necklace and a ring that allows her to perform magic. Unfortunately, Jules is just learning how to wield her magic and there are at least 2 mistakes.
Yes, there is a romantic shifter love interest. Yes, Jules has to learn how to work magic because her new life is about to be destroyed. Yes, there is a magical parrot.
And that's all I'm going to say about the plot. :)
I thought the characters were well-written and the plot interesting. However, towards the end of the book, Jules is warned not to trust everyone because someone is not who they are pretending to be. This worries me because Jules has made two more friends other than the shifter bartender, whom I like as characters.

Tegan Maher has done it again!! But it doesn't surprise me at all, I don't think she can write a bad book! I'm loving the change in this one with the older woman that's the main character and a little bit more of sexy scenes. It was also kinda nice to step away from murder mysteries for a bit. Also I had a connection with Jules getting closer to that 50 mark and being divorced because of a cheating husband. I also have had the wonderful opportunity to fall in love with a wonderful man that puts me on a pedestal, kinda like Ronan does with Jules. Anyway, I'm not one to give stories away but I will tell you this is another great story and the first of a new series that you won't be disappointed from! I highly recommend it (and seriously any of her books because I just love her that much)!!
Jules Cavanagh is in midlife. Her two sons are in college and her husband is off with his new young girlfriend, Bubbles. Her husband wants a divorce. So Jules decides its time for a change. She moves from Atlanta to Florida to go and take a look at the beach bar her father left her. But instead of selling it she decides to run it. When she arrives she finds an old book in a safe of her father's. She finds out magic runs in her family and before she can get her emotions under control summons a small hurricane and just about wrecks her new apartment. UH oh! Now what? So now she finds out she is in a position where she must learn everything she can about her power and get those lessons in fast since the evil guys are coming. Luckily she will have help from the hot bartender who is a wolf shifter and other magical people around. Welcome to a new life! A life she never imagined.
Reading Champagne Witches was kind of like watching Seinfeld, amusing, often silly but not much of a climax. Jules is notified by her husband that he wants to marry Bubbles, his secretary so after a satisfying tantrum, Jules packs her bags and moves to Florida's west coast where she has fortuitously inherited a beach shack, complete with drinks, food, clientele and a hunky bartender. Jules soon finds out that all is not what it seems. Apparently there are some family secrets her estranged dad was keeping from her. Like magic. And werewolves. And elves. And Evil Wizards who are not much present but clearly a threat. Jules finds she has magic herself and so, at 50, is finding herself. The end was pretty tame and of course the Evil Wizard survives by teleporting away so clearly there's another book. It was so-so. Not great but not horrible either. It could have been more.
This is Tegan's first foray into the Magic Midlife books and it's a more traditional length and not a cozy. However, it is fantastic! It's not a typical woe is me tale, though the first bit is sad. Seriously, I can't understand guys like that. I know it's a common trope, but it's based on reality and it gives us dudes a bad name. Lol. It doesn't take long for our heroine to decide to take matters into her own hands and live her life. It's fast paced, good action, a little romance, a good mystery, overall a wonderful book. Tegan hit it out of the park. I can't wait for the next one. Seriously, give this a try, you won't regret it.
I like it! The only thing is that I wish she know she has witchy power before moving to Florida. she could have done so much to her cheating hubby!
but it was a tad too long so I skipped a few chapters to get to the end to find out the result. Turs out her dad was murdered not because of sickness.
Also, she may or may not have a sister. if she does then that sister is imbalanced. I really think is that sister of hers didn't really know who is her father only latched on because she found a picture of Jules' dad in her mom's things. i call that desperate. trying to revive a dead horse. why not try DNA first to confirm??
I enjoyed this story a lot. It was a nice kick off to the series and a good introduction to the author for me. I’ve been a longtime fan of the narrator and again she didn’t disappoint. She managed to voice this empty nester who recently discovered she’s got magic beautifully. I liked that this woman wasn’t some young, naive, inexperienced girl, but instead was almost fifty, had grown children, a soon to be ex-husband, and clearly still had plenty more life to live and experiences to experience. I will certainly be giving book two a try once available on audio.
Cute, fast read. I somehow forgot this was a "Paranormal " Women's Fiction book and was thus surprised when there was suddenly magic. 😳 I felt like the storyline and lore were a little rushed after the powers came into play, but whatever. Also, I forgot these were usually "clean" romances and was then surprised by the "fade to black," nonexistent, love scenes. I wasn't really feeling the chemistry between the two leads anyway, and the time jumps to "after" served to make me disengage from their relationship even further.
I had just finished another 'newly discovered her talents' witch story but found the over the top constant and graphic sex was way more than I could enjoy, although the story was fun. But this book somewhat restored my faith in the fun world of magic, shifters and witches. Like a few others - I read it in one sitting because the characters and the mystical world were enjoyable. I am still one who prefers a bit less of the violence though. I will decide later if I am going to continue with the series.
Ahhhhh, Tegan Maher has done it again! I've read many, many books by this author and enjoyed them all! She doesn't disappoint with this one either.
Recent empty-nester, Jules, is blind-sided by a cheating husband and divorce request. Encourage by her two besties, she decides to move to Florida and start her life over. What she finds is: magic, a hot & sexy bartender..... and danger.
Book friends, dive into this book, and lose yourself in Jules' story.
Tegan Maher has written another fantastic story. It was hard to put this book down and not read it in one day. However, I did manage to space out the anticipation of reading it over a few days. The characters are all awesome and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better. Jules is a down-to-earth heroine and is surrounded by a cast of great supporting players. This is a series that will be hard for me to not binge read all the books. So far I have enjoyed all her different series that I have read.
Tegan Maher does it again, with a twist. Champagne Witches is not a cozy mystery. Instead it is a hilarious romp through the topsy turvy life of a middle aged, just got an empty nest, life goes to heck in a hand basket, woman named Jules. I enjoy all of the series Tegan Maher writes but this one is my new favourite. The tree with the animals in it is awesome for the chapter break, too.
I’ve been reading Texan Maher’s books for quite awhile and she never disappoints. This new series really speaks to me because the main character is a bit older and she’s starting her life over. I love that she’s introduced to magic at this stage in her life. The characters are believable, which can be tricky when living in a magical world, and the story is very interesting. I highly recommend this series and all of her books!
Why in the dicken that men who are in the midst of midlife crisis always want to trade in the reliable faithful wife for the younger model who only cares about money. He had the audacity to buy the new girlfriend a porche but couldn't fork out the money for a newer car. Here is a popsicle stick....rotate. To find out your are magical person was fantastic and harilous to her detriment of the apartment to say the least. Love the color contrast of the words.
DNF. Read like a Self-insert fantasy. Day after divorce 50s something mom gets sexy werewolf, college kids’ fees paid, and a bar with a beach view. AND needs to save the world with her awesome magic powers. She doesn’t miss her husband and seems to just roll with everything without a second thought, unless the thought is that she had an extra 20 lbs on her stomach but werewolf guy likes her anyways. That came up many times in the first chapters.
I was absolutely hooked from the first paragraph of this book! The main character Jules is full of hilarious attitude and isn't taking any crap from anyone, and she's completely endearing. The magical situation she finds herself in is well-crafted and well-written by Tegan Maher, keeping the reader turning the pages eagerly to the end. I look forward to reading the second in the series. I am grateful to have received a copy of this book from the Paranormal Women's Fiction Book Club.
What an adventure? I love Jules and her sarcastic attitude. I think she is a great character and I’m glad she had so much support. The magic enhanced the story instead of it hinging on the magic. Yes, she gained magic but that doesn’t define her. I like her outlook on how she can do all this cool stuff. She didn’t run scared or blame others the whole book. The magic enhanced the character throughout the whole story.
