Faraday #5

The Buffalo Train

Rate this book
It started out as a silly idea to bring buyers back to Abilene. Wrangle some buffalo, put them on a train, and ship them to Chicago so folks back east could see the massive, shaggy beasts with their own eyes. The concept seemed sound. What could go wrong?
But for John Creed, agent for the famed Faraday Security Service, it was anything but simple. First, Hank Miles was willing to do whatever was required to prevent the plan from succeeding. Hiding in the shadows was a silent partner. Creed’s biggest threat, however, came from the man in black—an assassin who took pleasure in his work and would not stop coming until the job was complete.

Before the Buffalo Train reached the end of the line, guns would roar, men would die, and Chicago would get a taste of what the “Wild West” was really like.

Robert Vaughan and James Reasoner – A Faraday Novel Bk 5 – The Buffalo Train – Reviewed 4/25/21 – Read 4/20-21/21

The day that wild animals visited Chicago and brought with them death and havoc!

John Creed, an agent for Faraday Security Service, was given a special assignment. Go to Abilene and figure out how to bring buffalo back to Chicago. Everything depended on the wild-haired plan to prevent the destruction of the cattle market and the town. Now along the way, John was to stop more men from being killed, hunt down a known bloodthirsty death for hire killer, stop family members of a recently hanged man from taking their revenge on him, and oh yeah, fall in love. Now, this was not your typical assignment but Matthew Faraday, the agency’s owner, knew that John Creed was a special agent, and he was the man for the job, plus he had faith that John would stop at nothing to get it done.

The Faraday Security Service was under contract for the Railroad, and the Railroad had invested quite a bit of money in the town of Abilene. They knew that Joe McCoy was in a battle with Hank Miles of Ellsworth for trail herds. Right now, there were no longer any buyers in Abilene because there were no cattle. Miles had waylaid them before they could reach Abilene. McCoy knew that if he didn’t get the buyers back, the town would die a very slow death. He finally came up with a gimmick to attract the buyers, but he needed help in getting it done.

Contacting the Railroad, requesting special cars and materials he wanted to bring Buffalo to Chicago and show them what the west was all about. He hoped that his plan would draw the buyers back to Abilene. Never could he have imagined the deaths that this would bring, but John Creed had a job to do and that was to make McCoy’s plan “REAL”, and possibly saving Faraday’s clients lots of money!

Join John Creed as he works his magic in bringing the West to the East…

What did I like? Talk about exciting and interesting. This book starts on page one and it does not stop till the final page turns. The fascinating part was the way that the past was woven into this storyline rings so true. Just imagine, what would have happened if this war between towns had led to the death of Abilene. It was one of the major cities that had railheads to ship to the east. The cattlemen needed these towns to sell their herds, and the towns needed the cattlemen for them to survive. If those towns did not have cattle buyers from the east, there would be no reason for the cattlemen to drive their herds to that town. This wild-ass gimmick was the last straw for the town, it had to work for them to survive.

I know that many only think about the havoc and destruction that was brought on at the end of a drive. The cowpokes went nuts, drinking, carousing, and shooting their weapons, but all of that was a necessary evil to a town’s survival. Also, not many realized that not every cowboy participated in these events. Many were men of honor that would quietly do their drinking, visit the brothels, and then be on their way back home. But the important thing is that they left part of their money in the economy of that town, thus the towns survived.

What will you like? Exciting, gunplay, killing, death for hire, lots of owlhoots, humor, romance, and one of the wildest gimmicks I have ever heard of! You have to wonder at the desperation of McCoy to think that he could just round up some of the most massive, unmanageable creatures, load them into a railcar, that none had ever encountered before, and then ship them to other cities to perform! Unfreaking believable!!!! It is no wonder that they would run ramped at the first opportunity they got. They couldn’t see very well, and all of the noises were driving them nuts, destruction was an inevitable result. This storyline is so creative, throwing in so many different elements of death, rounding it all out with a blossoming romance. The characters will take you by storm and run you over, the details and descriptions will have you holding your breath, so don’t forget to breathe every once in a while. A fascinating read due to the collaboration of two excellent authors, bringing us another unbelievable tale of the west.

Having read most of not all the Faraday book I can truthfully say this is the very best thus far! Creed proves himself to be the one to bring justice to those responsible for their ongoing misdeeds! Quiet a series of unending exciting adventures!

Most definitely another five star masterpiece of heartwarming western adventures, as the Author leaves no stone unturned in his outstanding descriptiveness of each and every new encounter of the ruthless bad guys devilment! I never tire following the Faraday detectives, once they get on the trail of the bad guys. Even a U. S. Senator, who turns bad in his endeavors to create a tough group of outlaws, is definitely worthy as a worthless outlaw leader!
As always Mr. Reasoner goes above and beyond in his descriptive storylines that successfully maintains anyone's undivided attention from beginning to end, as this compassionately motivated series of unending adventures! Too, his successful selections of outstanding character selections were unsurpassed in their commanding assignments from beginning to end! Creed is definitely a man of unending excitement, as his portrayal of a Faraday detective was probably the Author's most perceptive of all other characters involved!
Most definitely recommend this superbly written series of unending adventures to all readers,as the Author's successful descriptiveness of each new adventure will certainly appease all readers most demanding requirements! No time for slow downs in this compelling series of realistically western justice from beginning to end! You certainly don't have to be a seasoned western enthusiast to enjoy this compelling series of unending excitement to find yourselves completely mesmerized from beginning to end! Your loss If you don't follow Creed and his associates throughout this polarizing series of unending adventures!!!😃

Just Wow!

Much of the action goes against our good guys and they have to really persist to get past the bad guys.
Of course they do it but it costs them.
