It pained me that I don't like this one as I thought I would. Especially for a debut work, I don't want to criticise this book too harshly. So please, take this review with a grain of salt. I am very picky with my books and unfortunately, my mood does sometimes affect my impression of a book.

Writing-wise? I don't think it's bad. I rarely notice these aspects while I'm reading.

It's the pacing and plot that I mainly have issues with. The first 30% of the book was the most interesting part of this story. Our girl here, newly pregnant, caught her fiancee cheating with her best friend a day (or so) before their wedding day and immediately after was involved in a car accident that might not be accidental at all (actually yes, there's someone who wants her dead). So, she suddenly found herself to be in the afterworld where she was told to return back to 5 years ago to investigate something out (vaguely hinted). Then, she woke up, 5 years younger with the knowledge of her 30 years-old self... and dying of cancer. And she was approached by this mysterious pharmaceutical entrepreneur who wanted her to investigate a case of exploding bodies. Because you see, she's an heiress of a famous generational wealth company and also the youngest forensic scientist in the world.

Sounds immensely interesting, right?

Wrong. Because the rest of the book NOTHING happened. Remember the exploding bodies case? She never investigated the case at all. The fact that she time travelled back in time and met reapers in the afterworld? She shrugged it off and it was never properly discussed. Her cancer? Well, that was broached open but man, sometimes I think because we need to see her being the damsel in distress and nothing else. Because without the cancer thing, she would be the most boring person in the world.

The love interest? Fucking hell, don't even get me start with that. Their banter is like reading a banter between five-years old. "You stinky face." "Oh, youuuu stinky face."

I can't.

Honestly, I skimmed most of this book, up until the climax, where of course, you got this stupid conflict The whole thing is just so stupid, underdeveloped and disappointing. Especially when it promised so much in the first 30%.

This book has been on my radar for about a year now, and it was definitely worth the wait! I loved Yesnia and Armando (even though Armando does some things towards the end that make me a little ragey) I still couldn’t help but love him. His relationship with Yesnia just felt so natural and normal and after that major cliffhanger (!!!) I’m so excited to get back to these characters and see what’s in store for them next and how they are going to come back from the events we left off on.
Claris hints at a whole world and more books following some of the other characters and ya girl couldnt be more excited. Only *complaints* would be I wish there was a little more of the forensic science aspect and the supernatural element bc I was a tad bit confused in that area, but I’m sure it’ll be explained (wrapped up in book two).
definitely, a book and author to keep your eyes on.

You genius!!! You played with my emotions and I don't know if I love you or hate you for it😭😭

“𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚. 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕. 𝑺𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒌 𝒊𝒕, 𝒔𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒕.

This book has EVERY trope i love, even the sub-tropes which aren't mentioned in the blurb (because they'll be spoilers) are the ones I actually go out of my way to seek out and look for.

• Fantasy mix • Mafia • Marriage of Convenience • Forced Proximity • Age Gap • Boy Obsessed • Found family • Terminal illness

@ClarisJade , you broke me, fixed me back together and then killed me. That Cliffhanger? Might not seem huge to others but it destroyed me.

Guess who cried in the last 80% of the book? 𝗠𝗘, 𝗜 𝗗𝗜𝗗.

𝑾𝒆 𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒘𝒐 𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆. 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒇 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒂 𝒇𝒆𝒘 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒔.

^You see this line? Do you feel the pain???😭

I know in this review i should talk about the plot and character development and writing etc etc and I will, one day, after I get over this book's hangover. It's been a week, actually more than that😩

The plot is unique and the characters, both the main and the supporting ones, all are fantastic. Misfit with powers is Arman and his friends friends and the super intelligent humans is Yesenia and her friends. There's already chemistry present between Arman and Nia but after they get married, damn, get ready for fireeeee🔥. The playfulness of the relationship seems like a real life one too. They are more or less mafia royalty, the king and queen of Abyss👑. The story has more than just their relationship though, with discovering and undercovering secrets and scientific things, growing and getting strong from the past, supporting each other and being each other's strength and more.

Overall, FABULOUS DEBUT!!!!💘💣

*I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review*

I will keep this as spoiler free as I can, but in a word this book was simply amazing. The vibes were definitely giving me a little Hades and Persephone but the story itself was so incredibly unique I found myself completely immersed in the world building and the two main characters. Obviously, I now have a new book boyfriend because Armando was possessive and perfect.

I liked that this wasn’t just your run of the mill dark romance mafia book. There was a lot going on and I do still have many MANY questions that I assume will be answered in book two. But the additional elements of fantasy really pushed this book from a 4.5 to a 5 star for me.

Now I normally hate cliffhangers, but I think the author did a great job with the epilogue and leaving me wanting…no NEEDING to read the second book to know what happened and why. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat and didn’t really have any lulls.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (a slow burn but when it starts it 💥)
Favorite Quote: “He’s a nightmare wrapped up in a daydream.”

***I do recommend checking trigger warnings because this book does have darker elements!!

Now this is the book I’ve been waiting for. Armando is very protective and very bossy. Yesnia is just doing her job until he crashes her whole world. These two have excellent chemistry but lies and deception might just tear them fur to er apart. Excellent writing.

I'm shook. This book was everything. It's so good. I loved every second of it. I did find it a little confusing in some places but as a whole, it was an amazing read. It had so many genres to it, and so many components. I loved the blend, though it did felt a little weird to me, but that's just me.

Yesenia! Okay first I need to say, this name is so freakin unique and lovely, just like our scientist. She's so sweet and has such a big and beautiful heart that I seriously wanted to crush Robert for what he did. She is fierce and strong and just plain badass. The way she's handled everything in her life is beautiful. And the planning she did when she got the second chance, marvellous. I'd absolutely love to have a friend like Yesie!!!!

Armando! God, this guy, i don't have words. HE IS OFFICIALLY THE PART OF MY HAREM! He is so kind and caring and possessive and literally EVERYTHING I've ever looked for. I really really want him to be a real person and try to become his little siren (though i don't think im capable). He is as much an alpha as he is a teddy bear. I just wish he would've given Nia a hint about what he is doing. I think that would've been better.

The ending 😭😭😭 actually the last few chapters were heart-wrenching but the ending really shook me. I can't wait to see what happens next and have all my questions answered (hopefully).

I also wanna take a second and talk about Ziya and Kendall and Auntie AND the freak squad! They are such amazing support system like wow! I really want Ziya and Kendall story (please, Claris 🥺). And Auntie has so much wisdom and understanding that I really felt so safe listening to her, I really wanted to go and talk about all my problems with her.

Last but not the least, the Freak Squad! They are freaks alright but so good and supportive of each other. I really wish there was more of their appearances, especially during the last part of the story, yk after the island. But love them!!!

HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this to people who love fantasy, supernatural and romance. I know this is the author's debut book so I KNOW everything will improve. I mostly feel that it was the writing style that put me a little off but I still LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH and am looking forward to more by the author!

Cliffhanger? ✅️

Tropes: marriage of convenience, age-gap, forced proximity, found family, supernatural, romantic suspense, mafia, fantasy

Yesenia finds herself in the Underworld after she was murdered. She's been given a second chance at life. This is her chance to make new choices, save her best friend and protect her family. Only this time she won't be a victim. Armando Kazimier is not only a CEO but the feared leader of The Abyss crime syndicate. Years ago, a girl saved his life and he's been searching for her every since. But she has no memory of him. When their world crashes around them, will they make it out or will their secrets destroy them as well?

As soon as I read the Blurb for this book, I had to read it. It was truly unique as it combined two of my favorite tropes, mafia/crime and pnr. My emotions road the rollercoaster this plot was from start to cliffhanger and I embraced it all. I'm really looking forward to book two. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

Not gonna lie, I was kinda confused. The whole paranormal timeline split got me 🥲 BUT it was an interesting concept that not many authors write. Definitely not with the usual tropes, like marriage of convenience. Armand gave off a lot of sassy grump vibes, while Yesenia gave off serious grump vibes at times. Their interactions were always entertaining.

• boy obsessed
• sassy, broody mmc

In Flesh We Burn was a fantastic tale that had me captivated until the end. This story gave us dark romance, mafia, arranged marriage, forced proximity tropes as well as a supernatural element. There was a lot happening in this story and it will all take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride while keeping you engrossed. The plot was well-written and detailed with excellent world-building. The MC Armando and Yesenia were great together and although they barely knew each other I loved the evolution of their relationship. The author also gave us interesting secondary characters who I wanted to know more about. The story ends in a major cliff hanger that leaves me anxious for the next book. I enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it.

A supernatural romance like no other! If you enjoy your books full of sizzling romance and an evolving plot then you’ll enjoy this. There’s so many layers to this story and nothing is as it seems. It’s hard not to love the characters but our MMC Armando specifically caught my attention. A leader of the crime syndicate who brings terror to those around him, but underneath his hard exterior is a sweet spot only for Yesenia. I love my fictional men lethal and broody but seeing his sweet side just for Yesenia was a breath of fresh air. And Yesenia, she’s our intelligent FMC and I can only wish I had the brain power that she has. There’s so many components to this book and if you love a mix of contemporary with supernatural elements full of captivating plot then you’ll enjoy this!

This is the first part in a new series, and this is Yesenia and Armando’s story. Yesenia is murdered and finds herself in the underworld where she is granted a second chance to live, with choices of saving her best friend and protect her family, before her fate is sealed. Armando is a CEO and feared leader of “The Abyss” crime syndicate, who is searching for the girl who saved his life years before. This is an enjoyable story which is dark, raw, gritty, and intriguing, with a marriage of convenience, secrets, twists, survival, emotions, action, fantasy, and ends in a major cliffhanger.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

I was highly anticipating this book and it did not disappoint! I loved Yesnia and Armando. They were so good together! This book was a marriage of convenience, age-gap, forced proximity, found family, supernatural, dark, mafia, fantasy, and romantic suspense. It gave off Hades and Persephone vibes, but it was very unique in the way these tropes worked together. This book was a roller coaster of emotions from the start to the jaw-dropping cliffhanger at the end and I can’t wait to read book two!

Ahhh I loved this novel so much and that cliffhanger killed me.
This story is definitely one full of action, romance, and fantasy elements. It beautifully blends the genres that it includes together. I enjoyed discovering the different aspects of the Abyss, as well as seeing the character's development. Armando is a fantastic hero but he does not shy away from using his power and the darkness within him to get what he wants. Yessina is a very strong female character and I loved her drive and ambition.

One year I was waiting for this book ,and finally finished the ARC that I hase opportunity to receive!

This story is full rollercoaster of emotions, with marriage of convinced and little age gap that take my soul literally, and bring me back.
Armando Kazimier the underworld king, who lured me with he's dark personality and killing charm and Yasenia young woman who has no respite from the troubles that haunt her one after another and fighting with her own battles.
The connection between the couple is amazing bringing incredible steamy moments to read,Claris writing style is unique filed with so much passion that make me trough the whole book to feel all the characters emotion and to transver to their world.
So much things is happening and I'm giving only 4⭐️because in the end Armando make really dumb decisions, that get my nerves so high wanting to throw me phone on the wall😑 no matter what. But i will say no more about this book, because don't want to spoil something lol 🙈only that is finishing with cliffhanger that will for sure haunt me until the sequel comes to find out what is going to happen next!

3.5 Stars-Lots Going On

In Flesh We Burn Claris Jade gives readers quite the story with Yesenia and Armand. After the first chapter, I wasn't sure what to expect next.

We are introduced to Yesenia and Armando present to the past and then in a whole other dimension I suppose. I'm horrible with the Marvel timeline and this book reminded me of it. Trying to keep track of who and where. I liked Yesenia and thought she was written well as a fighter. Armondo was a tad on the creepy side, however grew on me as I read.

While I liked the storyline, the book felt like it started to drag. Sometimes a lot can be said in fewer pages. Out of my comfort zone for sure, as I’m not a huge paranormal reader, but gave it a try. I was intrigued by the darkness and angst surrounding Yesenia and Armando. Warned of the cliffhanger ending, I still felt a little cheated reading a book of this size with no real finish line.

I haven't read something that wasn't only romance in a long time and this one was really refreshing. Even though it wasn't my usual go-to book, the tropes and the blurb got my interest so I had to give it a try. And I really liked it. It was unique. I liked the characters (I want an Armando of my own) and the dynamic of the story. What I didn't like is that cliffhanger at the end. It definitely left me curious.

This is the first book in the abyss duet. I've been waiting for this book for a year and it was worth the wait.

So much has been going on in this book, when I read the first chapter I did not know what to expect from it, I mean yes this book has a supernatural trope but still wasn't sure what'll happen.

Yesenia was given a second chance at life and she was determined to make it right this time and will not repeat the same mistakes she did the first time. She got to meet Armando and they finalize a deal together which was a marriage of convenience.

Yesenia was such a badass and well Armando that man was *phewwww*. He was so obsessed and possesive over Yes. He cooks for her I mean come on any man who can cook and that too only for his love interest has my heart. Also, the side characters were pretty intriguing and I'm obsessed with Yes's stepbrother, Kendall.👀

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions and secrets and at the end, I was so furious at Armando (if he had gone through with that I'd have thrown away my device, I swear). The book ends on a cliffhanger and well what a cliffhanger it was, just can't wait for the second book.

Also, this is the debut of the author and she did an incredible job with it, really can't believe this is a debut book.

4.25 Stars!!

From the moment that this book was announced i've been wanting to read it! I've looked forward to it ever since. I picked it up as soon as i could and got into The Abyss Series right away. I really enjoyed this first installment!

This first book in Yesenia and Armando's journey captured my attention and didn't let go! A moment can change everything, something Yesenia and Armando sure know. Can these two take on everything together? I couldn't wait to see how it'd all play out!

Yesenia and Armando pulled me in. I was instantly curious about these two and was so glad that i got to dig into their minds. I really liked how i didn't know what all was going to happen in their story. There were so many aspects to it that i couldn't get enough of. I thoroughly enjoyed the way it kept me on my toes! Yesenia and Armando had me feeling so much!

I'm already looking forward to more!

With In Flesh We Burn, Ms.Jade has created a great and one of a kind debut with darkness and feels! After that ending, i can't wait for book two, ISWR to get here!

Be sure to read the author's note.

Claris Jade is a new to me author, and In Flesh We Burn was a page turner for me. I loved the dark romance with paranormal elements a great deal, so I'm super glad I finally met her work. Yesenia's life was cut short, but she got a second shot in the Underworld, and she's not going to squander it this round. Armando is the feared crime boss of the Abyss syndicate, but there's a lot more to him than meets the eye. Yesenia saved him in the past, and he's going to track her down, but there was a drawback or two from that, however there was also good to come out of it when they made a deal for a marriage of convenience, and it's not too long before real feelings are getting caught. Of course there's a secret or two that won't go over too well, so do they have enough foundation to weather the storm?! I loved Armando until I didn't because he made some questionable decisions that seriously made me stabby for real. I felt Yesenia's pain like it was my own, and it finishes on a huge cliffhanger, and I'm not sure where there's any sort of happiness about anything in my eyes. The wait for the conclusion will drive me batty because I NEED TO KNOW NOW! Anyway, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a debut and what a read! This book was awesome and quite unique. There’s a lot going on in this book and it didn’t feel like a typical dark mafia romance, which I really loved. This is an entirely new world and the author does a pretty good job, trying to explain and get you up to speed with everything that has to do with the world. And it was somewhat confusing at first, but the further you get into the book the more things begin to connect and make sense. I absolutely love the connection between our two main characters, Yesnia and Armando. They have such a great connection toward one another, and I was completely enamored with them. the only thing I absolutely hated about this book was that freaking cliffhanger! Why are you making me wait!? I seriously can’t wait to see where things go in the story because I have absolutely no idea where things are gonna end. I’m very excited to read more by this author. I think this was a great debut novel, and she definitely came out strong with such a spicy, hot new book boyfriend!

Seriously, though, can I have book two now?

ARC PROVIDED BY THE AUTHOR FOR A REVIEW.
-
in flesh we burn was one of my anticipated reads simply because Author Claris kept on teasing us with it's teasers for the longest time. Safe to say, I really liked it. The story was very unique from what I usually read and it perfectly blends with the tropes that were served! The underworld balanced with a new life to inhuman elements, amazing!

About Yesie and Arman, I really liked their chemistry in the book, however I felt as if their relationship was a bit rushed. I wanted to find answers about how Armando knew Yesie from before. I hope to find these in the second book. Apart from that, I admire the fact, how Claris wrote so much respect, love and devotion in her partners!

Last but not the least, I'm furious at Armando for obvious reasons (I don't want to spoil it) but I'm so darn angry at him! The cliff hangover also did me good because I really wasn't expecting that! I feel the first book has so many questions that are yet to be answered and I hope I find them soon in book 2. Overall, this was a really good read, and I really recommend it ❤️

Okay, i’ll be honest… i saw the cover and the tropes and i knew that i needed gave a chance… and definitely surprises me.
If you likes:
*Mafia books
*A hero completely devoted to the FMC
*Paranormal elements
*Forced proximity
*Arrangement marriage
Well, this book is for you.
Here we have the story between Yesenia- a woman that, starts the book, knowing the cheating by your fiancè and best friend and, after that, suffer a car accident and dies. In after life she has other chance (for what reasons, we don’t know yet) and back 5 years in your life. In this moment she knew our hero- Armando (the leader of the bigger crime organization) and, after mutual agreement, they marry with each other.
In the beginning i was a little confused, but the narrative envolves you and start building in a nice way that you can’t stop reading. I really like the Armando (and definitely need more about Lucien) and the cliffhanger in the end? OMG, i need the next book. I really enjoyed the story, can’t wait for the next one.

Dark , raw , gritty paranormal , forced proximity , mafia , slow burn and fantasy elements. So many of my go to tropes when it comes to reading romance wrapped up in a storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time and grab onto all your emotions in ways your will definitely not be expecting. I honestly was not sure what to expect when I first sat down and started reading as this was my first time reading this author , but before I knew it I found myself completely hooked and utterly invested in the most wonderfully written journey and two main characters that are so captivating, so unique and completely multi layered. There really are no perfect words to express all the response you should read this awesome book , just read it for yourself, beware it truly is a emotional rollercoaster in every sense of the word .

Yesterday, the debut novel of Claris - In Flesh We Burn was released. It's the first book in The Abyss series. In Flesh We Burn is a mafia romance novel with the paranormal elements and marriage of convenience trope. Main characters are Yesenia / Nia (an incredibly intelligent forensic scientist) and Armando (boss of Abyss mafia family).

The book begins quite unconventional because maybe at page 10 we are a witness of Yesenia's death. The girl was murdered but after a visit in The Underworl she receives a chance to live her life again and finds out who tried to kill her.

In her second life she got a chance to change her decisions and create new history. Yesenia who suffers a deadly illness has only one wish, she wants her family safe, so she offers a deal to Armando. But is it only business?

I really like the story of Nia and Armando. I love the connection between them. They are perfect for each other.

There are a lot of mysteries and secrets still waiting for releval. I have a few theories but I don't want to spoil anything. I'm really curious how Claris will answer all the questions. After a cliffhanger I'm so excited for the second book.

3.5/5 ⭐️ 2/5 🔥

This has been my anticipated reads since last year and I’m upset I have to wait for BOOK TWO, I’m also not a fan of the recreation/second chance at life trope the author has going on. It’s a bit confusing but I’m sure we’ll get more answers in book two just wasn’t feeling it at the time of reading it if it makes sense, also the cancer trope.. I’m very interested how that’s going to take place in book two..

Armando, Arman, Little Mando is MY BOOK BOYFRIEND, secretly pining and he FALLS FIRST for the heroine please 🤌🏼😈😍

This was an intriguing paranormal romance concept, and I tried hard to enjoy it.

As much as I wanted to like this because, once again, this type of paranormal concept of a story is definitely a thing, and the characters are also quite interesting, the pacing and execution made it difficult to do so.

After a few days of thought, I felt that this book could have been better if the writing had been much faster paced, but instead, the book took quite a few turns to make it even more intriguing, perhaps, but it didn't turn out that way.

On the bright side, is the romance or developments between the leads, particularly their interactions.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending because I'm not a fan of those kinds of endings, so yeah. 3⭐

Now this is the book I’ve been waiting for. Armando is very protective and very bossy. Yesnia is just doing her job until he crashes her whole world. These two have excellent chemistry but lies and deception might just tear them fur to er apart. Excellent writing.
