REVIEW:
Demons & War explores a bleak dystopian world that will leave you wondering what is going to happen next. This is the second book in the series, although it can be read as a stand-alone. What I like so much about the first book is its characters, and my favorite thing in this book is its characters as well. Each character has their own distinct plotline, even if it is small. Although they can all seem unlikable at times, it is hard to stay mad at them given all they are going through. Each character has a struggle and it can be hard to stomach, especially the more difficult events (such as alcoholism and sexual assault) but every event makes them grow as a person. They always grow even if they don’t exactly realize it. This story follows a handful of characters and sometimes that can be confusing, but I never felt confused with their story. In this book I feel I know enough about all of these characters to truly feel and care for them. All of the themes and symbols that follow these characters are incredible and really make you think about what it means to have strength and overcome rough patches in your life.
I like this book a lot. I also like the first book a lot l but feel this novel is much cleaner writing wise. There are less grammatical mistakes and the writing flows more easily compared to the first novel. In general, E.M. Kelly’s writing is concise, plot driven and filled with lots of imagery that makes your stomach churn. Like the last novel, the pacing is incredible and never falters; I always felt like I was on the edge of my chair while reading this story. In my opinion, what makes a post-apocalyptic story stand out is its pacing and E.M. Kelly does a great job of keeping the story interesting. The dialogue is great as well; I feel it works much better in this novel and really made me want to read more. The plot, just like the previous story, is creative and exciting. While it is exciting, it does manage to make you think about difficult and excruciating themes and topics in a chilling way. I suggest this book to anyone who has struggled with any difficult life event, especially alcoholism. This book teaches you that there is always a way to overcome your demons, even if things seem entirely hopeless.
Different stories with completely different characters unfold in parallel in the post-apocalyptic world. Each story presents a different situation that the surviving humans are left to deal with. As the name suggests, all of these stories have characters who are going through some of hell or other in the post-pandemic world. The author has weaved in intrigue, drama, suspense, and horror in all the stories. The characters are very well defined and the scenes are so superbly described that white reading, I could develop visuals of how the scenes might look like and even how the characters might look like!
The book is so well-written with a good pace such that even though the stories don’t intertwine, each one is well developed and as a reader I did not lose track. But was rather glad to return to continue to read what happens to Annabelle or Drew or ….
Even though this book is not the usual genre that I read, I was drawn in and could not stop reading. In the moments, I did stop reading, I could not stop thinking about the characters and wondering what would happen to them next.
This book reminded me a lot of Swan Song, by Robert McCammon, or The Stand, by Stephen King, both of which I read, liked, and own.
There are a lot of characters to like and dislike as everyone deals with the fallout of society and how best to survive. I love the added scary, supernatural element that is present, but that the focus is more on the decisions each person has made than on the shadowy "puppet master".
I have to say, out of everyone, Annabelle was my favorite character. This was because I love seeing women rescue themselves, not that the good guys weren't needed, because they most definitely were. But she definitely didn't back down where others might have. (a trigger warning for those who may need one: sexual abuse does play a role in this story as it does in many post-apocalyptic stories)
Overall, this was a great book. I will have to read the 1st in the series, as I jumped into this book first.
This novel had a great story line, building upon the characters introduced in the preceding novel. The author continues to display showed maturation in his writing from his previous novel, along with the solid story line we see that the current novel flows flawlessly, keeping you engaged from the very first page and my attention until the very last page. I just could not put the novel down not knowing if our protagonist would be reunited with his family or not. The foreshadowing led me to draw some conclusions, but I was proved wrong at every turn! The novel was thrilling throughout. I received a copy of this novel from the author. This review is my true and honest opinion.
Demons & War is a book that will hook you from the very first page. It just gets more interesting. It has an apocalyptic and suspenful tone. It is very well written, the characters are very well defined, and clearly expressed. I definitely recommend it if you are looking to feel chills while reading a book!
