Scott Fletcher is dead – his lifeless body in a pool of blood.

Sarah Holden’s life is turned upside-down the day she discovers her fiancé’s body next to the motorbike he’d been working on. Her screams do not come.

She confesses to his murder but she didn’t kill him.

Peddyr and Connie Quirk, husband-and-wife PI investigators, are brought in to unravel the tangle, prove Sarah’s innocence and find the true culprit. As they are about to discover, the truth is sometimes much more than skin deep.

Dark humour, twists and turns. Not your straightforward whodunit...

Alison Morgan lives in Bedfordshire where she was born and brought up. She worked in the county for nearly thirty years for the NHS mostly at the front line of mental health services.

Alison retired earlier than anticipated because of an unexpected health challenge which redirected her to write in order to save her own sanity. Her crime thrillers pull on many years of experience within psychiatry.

Other than that: family, friends, rugby, live music, real cider, lively conversation, laughter and more recently motorbikes (mid-life crisis).

I've read all of Morgan's books and enjoyed every one. What makes her stories stand out from the crowd is the humour she uses and the characters she creates. In this book Peddyr and Connie are back investigating a new case. They are a great couple. You can almost forget that they're fictional, as their relationship and obvious affection for each other seem so real.

I was really happy that Monica Morris, a mental health nurse who featured in Morgan's early books, plays a leading role in this story after a change of career. The banter between her and Peddyr, and the way she successfully brings an arrogant cop down a peg or two, made me laugh.

The case being investigated is complex with a number of culprits. With Connie's research skills and power of deduction, and Peddyr's talent at getting information out of people, it was interesting seeing the investigation develop.

Another cracking book from one of my favourite authors!

I jumped up and down and clapped my hands when I saw that the Quirks were back in business in their second outing in this hopefully long series. This husband and wife team are the perfect pairing for this intriguing story, which has thrills, tension and laughable moments. Peddry is the frontman, but his wife Connie is just as much the star. Connie is impulsive, especially when she knows that she is onto something. It is like her caution catches up with her and goes into over driver about everything that could go wrong. She makes me as giddy as her.

From the first page of the story, I knew that this would be a one-sitting book and cringed at everything Sarah Holden did after discovering her fiancé’s dead body. I nodded my head at rapid speed, knowing that the reaction she had to what she saw was how I would behave. She laughed uncontrollably, which did not help her situation one bit. I had to laugh!

I could not take to Sarah, with her rose-coloured spectacles, where her dead fiancé Scott and spoilt annoying son Ryan was concerned, though I did feel sorry for the son. For someone who was used to getting his own way, Ryan was slow at realising just what a catch twenty-two situation he was in.

There weren’t many characters in the story that are nice but believe me, the Quirks make up for that. They dig that bit deeper, ask the prying questions that bit more and entertained me again page after page. Connie knows how to get the best from people, and she does it in style.

I enjoyed the background on the motorbikes, they hold a place in my past, which I treasure as one of the best times in my life. When the smell of them was mentioned, I could bring it to life in my mind.
It is a top story, brilliant characters, and the Quirks. I could not ask for more!

I wish to thank Hobeck Books for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

When Scott Fletcher is found dead by his fiancée, Sarah Holden, she confesses to his murder. Why would she confess to a murder when it so obviously wasn’t her? Who is she protecting and why?

Peddyr and Connie Quirk start to investigate the muddied waters surrounding the murder, all is not as it seems!

This is the second book in the series and an enjoyable read. The storyline was interesting and had me guessing (incorrectly) at who did what! There were some humorous moments that really did make me laugh out loud. Good characters and a will they won’t they possible romance. I love the relationship between Peddyr and Connie, they work so well together. Another great story in the series.

This is book 2 in the Quirk files series, featuring the delightful Connie and Peddyr Quirk.
On this occasion a man is found murdered, the girlfriend soon to be wife has confessed and the son is carted off to a psychiatric ward for issues of paranoia.
What follows in an intense, clever, tricksy, twisty plot that covers many of the good and bad aspects of human nature.
Women and the elderly being manipulated, money being the root of much evil, nature vs nurture contrasted against friendship, acceptance, support from unexpected sources.
Alison writes these as a more lighthearted read and her sense of humour jumps off each page. One particular line "I can neither drive nor sleep in a bed whilst wearing an old chair" made me laugh out loud.
This was another brilliant story. You got to know more about the characters and I absolutely cannot wait to read book 3.

Throttled by A B Morgan is book 2 in the Quirk Files series and is a great read. It is released on 22 June. The wonderful bunch of characters from Over My Dead Body (book 1) are back. Even after only one book they feel like old friends. The repartee between the 4 of them (Bernard Kershaw the solicitor, Monica who works with Bernard, Peddyr the PI and his wife Connie) is priceless. Sarah Holden has got herself in a bit of a pickle by admitting to a murder she thinks her son may have committed. DI Webster is in charge of the case and is determined to charge Sarah with the murder. He is not rated very highly by Peddyr, so he is determined to find the culprit before too much damage is done. Meanwhile Sarah’s son, Ryan, has been admitted to a mental health facility. He felt the murder victim, Fletcher his Mum’s partner, was not who he seemed. A fair bit going on, but such a good and entertaining read. Loved it.

Book 2 in The Quirk Files and much as I enjoyed the first book I think I enjoyed this even more. These books are written with a touch of humour, sometimes quite dark, sometimes laugh out loud but they are really good thrillers, with a twist. Really well written and such fun.

Briefly, Sarah Holden finds her fiancé dead in a pool of blood. Her immediate reaction is to suspect her son Ryan, so she confesses to the murder. With Sarah in prison and Ryan in a psychiatric hospital her mother-in-law arranges legal representation for them both and the lawyers appoint Peddyr Quirk and his wife Connie as investigators.

I love the interaction between Peddyr and Connie and his attempts not to swear are so funny. This is one of those books you don’t want to put down; at least I didn’t. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. Enough red herrings to keep you guessing and just when you think the book is about to end, bang! there’s another twist. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This will be published on 22nd June & is the second in The Quirk Files, but reads well as a standalone. I was very fortunate to read an ARC copy.

I love Peddyr & Connie Quirk, they are my guilty pleasure, if they existed in real life, I know we’d get on like a house on fire. Peddyr is a talented investigator/inquisitor & Connie is just ace at research & then assimilating her finds.
In this book, Scott Fletcher is murdered but by who? Plenty of suspects, & even an admission, but why? I’m not going to say anymore about the plot, you’re just going to have to read it.
Lots of laughs; plenty of misdirection & even a touch of romance. It isn’t a cosy mystery nor a blood & guts thriller. But it is a very good read.
Highly recommended & I can’t wait for the next Quirk adventure.

An excellent 2nd book in this great series.
The Quirks are a fabulous pair who are private investigators, sensible, miss nothing, crazy couple. Love them!
A body is found with a woman, who looks suspiciously like she is guilty. Her name is Sarah, but there’s a but things aren’t always as they seem are they.
The series is just going to get better. Enjoy!
