If your spouse or someone you know has been deployed recently, the stress of this situation will resonate with you. Jocelyn Green speaks directly to the wives of deployed soldiers, airmen, seamen, and marines through the experiences of their spouses. This book is not “ten easy steps” for a painless life; instead, it is a collection of devotions that squarely addresses the challenges wives face when their husbands are away protecting freedom, challenges The foundation of this devotional is the unchanging character of God and the anchor of Jesus Christ, even amidst the shifting circumstances of a military family.
There are so many positive reviews on here, it seems that this book has really helped a lot of women. My advice is, use discernment when reading this. Read your bible, talk with other Christians, pray over each lesson and seek Gods will in your life. This book may not be right for everyone, or particular lessons may not apply to you. I had to stop reading this book. Readers of this book should be cautious. I trusted this book at first and really started applying the lessons taught in my life. I ended up carrying around a lot of guilt, and had to consult with my pastor. For me, many lessons taught did not apply to my situation, but i was reading that this is what I ought to do and this is this Christian thing to do. I felt reprimanded for sharing anything with my deployed husband. They talked a lot about supporting other Christians, and I ended up in an unhealthy Christian friendship that sucked me dry. Ultimately, after speaking with my pastor, and my husband approaching me because I was no longer being open with him and it was negatively impacting our relationship- I had to stop reading the book. I would not reccomend this book ever to a friend. There are a many devotionals that will make such a more positive difference in your life, although they may not be deployment specific.
I did not find this book to be encouraging or helpful. Every wife goes through deployment differently and I dont need a book to tell me what the Christian way of handling it is. I was expecting poems or passages, not irrelevant stories and judgement. I will continue my search to find a great deployment book.
This is such a wonderful book to read, especially if you are a fellow military spouse going through a deployment and need a little help staying strong during those difficult days and are feeling a little light hearted in the faith aspect. This book definitely helped me during my hard days during deployment.
I was very excited to get to read and review this book because I had heard great things about it, and I was not disappointed. Jocelyn Green along with 14 other military wives from all different branches, has written a wonderful selection of 86 different devotionals filled with scripture verses, faith, and encouragement.
Each devotional has a verse that goes along with it, and at the end of each has an "Ask" and "Pray" section which asks you questions that make you think about what you just read and a written prayer for you to pray aloud. There was a wide range of topics that covered almost every area and aspect of military life including main topics such as:
-Taking Every Thought Captive: Training Our Minds to a Biblical Perspective. -Guarding the Heart: Protecting Ourselves from the World's Temptations. -Ambassadors for Christ: Viewing Our Role as a Ministry. -Taking Orders: Living the Life That Has Been Set Before Us. -Total Surrender: Giving Up Our Attempts to be in Control. -The Price of Duty: Overcoming the Trials Inherent in Serving. -Active Duty Faith: Leaning on a Faith that Sustains. -The hope of Victory: Recognizing God's Goodness.
This book really hits close to home with real-life stories of other military wives and their daily struggles. There were so many things that convicted me and really spoke to me through this book and also so much to learn from! I was able to get something out of every single devotional in this book, and walk away feeling encouraged on a daily basis. There were some sections that just brought me to tears, because of how much I was able to relate, or because of something that God used to show me. This is a book that women of all ages, no matter how long they have been a military wife, can relate to. It's something I will definitely be reading again and will be passing on for others to read as well!
This was a Christmas gift from one of the wives in my family support group (although I will admit I opened my gift early because I had a sneaking suspicion it was exactly what I needed at the time, and it was!!!!) Probably one of the best books written for military wives that I have ever read. It is a day-by-day devotional, and each day usually hits me right between the eyes with something I personally have faced as a military spouse. So good to know I'm not in this alone! One of the contributors to this book, Denise McColl, was a friend of mine back in Charleston. Denise died suddenly last spring, so for me this was an added blessing of being given this book. It was a sweet reminder of Denise and her desire to be a friend and mentor to other women.
What a great book! While not every devotion spoke directly into my life, I could relate in so many and felt the author's love and encouragement throughout. While each marriage should find agreement and compromise on the issues raised within the pages, much of what you'll find helps you to think through and pray about the topics before approaching your soldier to determine what will work for you.
This book was not as helpful as I would have liked. Bits and pieces were fine, but the advice about not sharing with the husband what's going on in the home while he's gone and the watch out for dr pepper addiction were too much for me. These perfect women are living on another planet from the one I'm on.
At the time that I read this, I would not have considered myself very "religious" -- but decided to give it a try. With an open mind, I found it to be positive, refreshing and helpful. It was a good "reality" check that calmed my nerves at the end of each day!
Great book to read while your partner or someone you know is overseas..... i loved reading these daily devotions....it is good to read what others go through and to know that your not alone.
I stopped reading this book. It ended up being a book that wasn't for me. I was very disappointed, but thats okay. I'm sure it is probably a great book for others.
