Ruthless Games #2

Sweet Retribution

Rate this book
I knew my shadows were hiding something, but I never expected this.

The game is over… for now. But once again, three simple gunshots have blown my world to pieces.

I came back from the darkness last time. I pulled my life back together. This time, though? I don’t know how to do that.

Secrets are buried deep in Halston.
Alliances are formed in darkness.
And vengeance is the only balm for a broken heart.

I was never meant to be a part of this game.

But if they didn’t want me to play, they should never have touched what was mine.

This is the second book in the Ruthless Games series, a new adult reverse harem romance. It contains sexual situations, violence, and dark subject matter. Please venture between these pages at your own discretion.

3.5 Stars but definitely better than book one.

A lot of the issues I had with book one were fixed up a bit in this one. The pacing is better, there's more of the plot that was promised, the sex-to-plot ratio is a lot better. There may be the same number of sex scenes in this book but I thought they were placed in the story much more naturally.

I also really appreciated the way Ayla's relationship with Theo and Ryland was especially developed in this book so that I could actually understand why she liked these guys. Even if the guys aren't together within the reverse harem, I still like it to be clear that they like each other and it's super clear that Marcus, Theo, and Ryland all have a really deep bond. I appreciated how much emotion the guys showed. I think sometimes authors of darker, bad-boy romances shy away from that but I think a show of emotion that isn't anger in front of the heroine is a great way to show trust and that the relationship is deepening.

The plot parts were much improved. I think the cliffhanger we got at the end of this book wasn't quite as effective as the last book and there were some twists that just didn't quite work for me as well but overall it was much better and I appreciated the action. One thing I didn't mention in my review of the first book is that Ayla had one of her arms amputated 2 and half years before the main plot of the book. I don't know what it's like to lose an arm but there is so little attention paid to it that it seems like a weird inclusion. Many people who have lost limbs live very regular lives but Ayla seems to have zero issues navigating this fairly recent amputation and when she loses her prosthetic, she acts like it doesn't really matter, which is not what I think would actually happen. It just felt a bit off to me and made me feel like that aspect of her character could have been handled better.

This is a pretty good series that is very easy to read. It took me a few days to get through this only because this was the book I was reading on my phone between classes and not really at any other time. I'm probably going to take a bit of a break before book three to read some library books but I am looking forward to finishing this series.

Obsession and retribution have come in threes. Three bullets she took for him and almost died, now three he has taken for her, but he's missing. A game that she is drawn into to finding one of her three loves. She didn't mean to fall for his brothers but she did and when she gets him back she will have all three. Marcus, Theo and Ryland all come from powerful families that want more and have sacrificed their heirs to gain more but Ayla will fight to keep all three of her men alive and come out the victors in this vicious cut throat game.
Again, Yes! This series is quickly becoming an addiction. It's twisted and dark with so much happening yet when it's Ayla and one of her men, or all three, there's nothing else and it's damn sexy.

Book two gets 4.5 ✨

Mainly because of one thing that I realized right in the final paragraph, that bothered me.. About Luca. The man who is responsible for this deadly game of power and position. It makes no sense to me, yet, why he would be who Ayla says/suspects he is. Simply because he already has all the power, so what would be his point to doing what she suspects now??.

So the logic/answers better be off the chain good, regarding this accusation, with the final book.

Everything else was completely on point here. And extremely too 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵 and intense for words.

What they did to and for Ayla here, my gawd, my gawd 🤯

Yes, I'm hooked on this Trilogy and running to the final book now.

Read it! Run to book one now!

3✨ - review in portuguese. this was kinda boring. the first one was soooo fucking good… i’m disappointed.

beijo fml

You guys...I'm seriously in fucking love with this series. Like hands down, the best books I've read this month so far. Can't wait to see how Ayla, Marcus, Theo and Ryland's story ends❤️

- RH
- no cheating
- no condoms
- mentions of rape, sexual assault, abuse, gore, violence, death, blackmail, the foster system
- plot twist/cliffhanger

*I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

I really liked this book. The RH factors that I love came more into play and the connection between Ayla and her men just continued to develop. I was also super invested and on the edge of my seat the entire time because I was so scared something was going to happen to my babies! The author does a really good job of making it where you don’t know what’s gonna happen next.

The only thing with this book was that it was more plot oriented than the first one. I personally am not a big fan of plot and prefer character and relationship development. While this book did have that, the driving force was the plot. There was nothing wrong with it and I actually was intrigued by what was happening, but I ultimately did enjoy this a slight bit less than first one. It’s not because the book was bad or anything, it’s just personal preference.

Overall, I did really enjoy this book. The first one was one of my favorite reads of 2020 and this was definitely a solid sequel. I am very excited to see what the conclusion will bring!

Book 2 picks up where book 1 left off. Ayla wakes up to discover a dead body, Marcus is missing and Theo and Ryland are there for her.

I do like that Theo and Ryland got the time to build their own relationship with her versus being the lackey, second choice when Marcus was present in the first book.

This book definitely does end in a cliffhanger and those last couple of pages do a nice job of setting up the third and final installment.

I never understood all-consuming love before—the kinds of stories where people would rather die than lose each other. The kinds where they burn the whole world down with their love. But I think I do now.

Gahhhhhhh!!! Callie Rose! You and your cliffhangers!

Sweet Retribution is book 2 in the Ruthless Games series and after the way book one ended I needed this book more than I needed to breathe.

The Game continues, everyone’s life is on the line. Who will win? Who will survive?

Get ready for a story full of heart stopping twists and turns that will leave you raging and begging for more!

I’m seriously loving this series! I definitely think it’s becoming a fast favorite of mine by Callie.

I don’t want to spoil anything because if you’ve read book one you know it’s a massive cliffy. I was on pins and needles waiting to know what was in store for Marcus— as he’s my favorite!

This book keeps up with that high anxiety, twists and also super super hot sexy scenes!

I love this story and the characters and I can’t wait for the final installment!

4.5 stars!

02/07/2024 - I am going to give this another chance.

06/16/2020 - 2.5 stars.
The game continues. The characters are trying to find out who is involved and how to win.
The book starts where book 1 ended.

Book 2 was just okay. It past the time for me. I loved the first book which I picked up every chance I got.
Mediocre read.

Very disappointed. I felt that after the first book the plot had great potential but unfortunately the plot took a back seat to mediocre smut. The spice was there but not super fantastic writing where it should have been the focal point of the entire book. There are much better romance novels out there to read, don't waste the time with this one.

Not even finishing the series.

“How do you not get it?” he rasps. “How the fuck do you not get it by now, Ayla? You didn’t just save Marcus’s life the night you took those bullets for him. You saved mine. You saved Theo’s\

Is it me, or did Sweet Retribution feel short?
Maybe I read it too fast?
I flew by this in hours.

The pacing of the book was picking up too,
Now that we are introduced to the game, we have seen different characters, storylines and backstory.
While the romance focused on Ayla's relationship with her feelings for the three men.
This was full of sexual tension, sexy times, and the personality of the three different men spark in this one.

When it was sweet, I cried.
When it was sad, I died.
When it was sexy, we all had a good time.

Please don't make me pick my favourite because all of them are mine. mueheheh.
That plot twist at the end was so unexpected but so good.
I am now just so excited. What else are we getting!?

“It’s utterly terrifying to realize that my heart now exists outside my own body. But I meant what I told him in the car. It belongs to him now. It belongs to Ryland and Theo. And I don’t want it back.”

Eek! Can't believe there's only one volume left after this. Sweet Retribution is only officially releasing in less than a day, but I'm not ready to say goodbye yet to Ayla and her men. 💔😭 The book is over too quick. I want more of them, dang it! I have complete faith in Callie Rose to write a satisfying and epic conclusion to The Ruthless Games saga in Sweet Salvation, but I'm being greedy in hoping for a lot of smexy and loving times between Ayla and the guys in between all the conflicts and action. I have a feeling the final book is going to be aptly named; it'll be the "sweet salvation" to my "sweet obsession." 😂😍

I was lucky that Amazon is selling the paperbacks of Sweet Retribution about two weeks early before its release. And I was even luckier that Callie finished it way before the original expected publication date (August 2020). I wasted no time in ordering the paperback, and it was an early birthday gift when it arrived within two days. Read it right away, and it CONSUMED me.

Sweet Retribution picks up right where Sweet Obsession ends. Ayla is recovering from the surprise attack from Carson Purcell, and when she wakes up in a sea of panic and confusion, she finds out that Marcus is missing. And Carson himself lays in front of her, shot in the head. Who killed him? And what happened to Marcus?!

Luckily, Theo and Ryland are there for Ayla, and they try to piece out on Marcus's whereabouts and situation. I am so happy we get to see the development between Ayla and Ryland and Theo.

We also get more glimpses into Ayla's past, and some questions are answered. And holy macaroni! I just freaken love her (and the guys) loads more after Sweet Retribution. She's always been a fierce fighter, but I love how she becomes even stronger after meeting her men. I love her raw honesty and undeniable strength; I also adore her femininity and sensibility when she chooses them to shine through. She's so admirable and lovable. And so lucky to have three perfect men! Sigh.

The second book does end with a cliffhanger, be warned! Hard to believe the next book will be the last. There's something rotten in Halston: there's a lot of twists and conflict going on in Sweet Retribution, and I can't wait to see if any of my predictions will come true or not.

Sweet Retribution is full of suspense, angst, heat, and it fully delivers! Callie is such a talented author who has a way with words; no wonder she's become one of my favorites! I love her writing style, and I love that she makes no to minimal mistakes in her books. I'm anxiously, yet patiently waiting for my Sweet Salvation! Looking forward to how Callie will wrap everything up and connect it all. And most of all, I want to see that richly-deserved happy ending for Ayla, Marcus, Ryland, and Theo. 💞

Enjoyed the first book in this series but this one not so much. Very repetitive and the story didn’t advance much. Skipped to the end, cliffhanger. May read the next one just to skip to the end to discover the end of the tale

After that cliffhanger I had to pick this one up, but I was already loosing interest in the story. The game plot line just wasn't holding my interest and I didn't have the energy to deal with Victoria and that whole dynamic/situation. The main characters and their relationship weren't enough to keep me invested through all of the plot points I could see coming. I ended up DNFing this one about 65% in.

The plot thickens.

I still like the direction this book is going, I also like the relationships forming between Ayla and the guys.

SPOILER ALERT! *******
Just in case, you haven’t read the first book, as you know, the FMC lost part of her right arm. I had read a review by an individual that was bothered how Ayla was not more upset about losing her prosthetic arm. And I just felt the need to point out in the book it was mentioned several times - Ayla was not a fan of wearing it, and felt as if she was wearing it to appease strangers and avoid pitying looks and such, she did not wear this prosthesis for her own vanity. She also mentioned multiple times how uncomfortable it was, so I’m not sure how one can pick something like that to review. But that’s just me.

Now this part is solely my own opinion, I’m not a big fan of sex scenes during a life and death situation, and yes, hygiene is a thing for me, lol when you read you’ll understand.

This is my review for all 3 books in this series.

I listened to the first book of the series on audible and didn't really love it. I didn't particularly connect with any of the guys, I did however like Ayla.

But I have been on a mission lately not to abandon books so easily. It's kinda a big problem of mine. So that and how much I liked Ayla made me start the second book. This series is such a good example of why I shouldn't abandon books cause I would have missed out on such a good story. This actually ended up being one of my favorite why choose romances. And even though I didn't really like Marcus in the first book, I did end up really loving him.

Sweet Retribution is a solid follow up from Sweet Obsession. Pretty much picks right up where book one leaves off. I do not want to spoil anything for you if you have not read this series yet, but I will say that we left off on a very scary note. We start off SR literally right after the ending.

Alya is a strong character, she has to be to deal with what is coming. She has her guys, and that is something that she is going to fight for, no matter who it is. She is also getting closer to the two other men in her harem. They are her rock and she is theirs. I really am rooting for her and her men, they do compliment each other beautifully.

Sweet Retribution has everything that the first book does, but here I think things take a turn more for the plot. We are getting more into the meat of the story with all of its twists and turns. Really Callie has done an excellent job of mixing the romance, action, plot, sexy times, and pace all together to make a highly engaging read. I could not put my kindle down. I so cannot wait for Sweet Salvation, because I have a feeling that this is going to be explosive.

Omg this book blew me away again, with the crazy start with Marcus missing leaving us all needing to know what happened to him.
In this book we see Ayla, Theo and Ryland grow closer with plenty of steamy scenes whilst they try to over come the loss of marcus.
To come to a crazy twist when they have to attend a ball. From here we see so much come to light and see Ayla and her guys try to make allegiances and try to work out who The Viper is. Will they find Marcus and find out who Viper is pick up this amazing kickass wicked read and find out

this one wasnt as good as the first one. the plot sort of fell flat and everything seemed a bit repetitive for me. i plan to finish the last book in series since it’s short, but definitely feel like the first book was the best of the series

again, action packed and fast paced. this one was more focused on the relationships between each character which i didn’t mind. this was good, but nothing amazingly memorable. i like the characters, but i’d like more depth overall. i do love the dynamics and relationships that we saw throughout this though<33 i adore the way theo, ryland and marcus love eachother like brothers, and how they each adore asya and fiercely protect her and do anything to keep her safe. ryland is just 🤌🏼😮‍💨, his love confession UGH. theo is so cute& gentle i adore him. i like marcus but he doesn’t appeal to me as much tbh. asya, i see why you want them all babes xx the plot twist at the end of this was good i’ll say, i think the plot/ story basis has a lot of potential but i feel like the writing ruins it and they need to be longer imo, enjoyable none the less though. the hunger games vibe is rly good i want to see it all come together in the final book next. i feel like this is mostly smut, and reverse harem too? no complains whatsoever bcos it’s the best type🙏🏼

Okay so the pacing issues from the first book were fixed with this one. Things opened up from where things left off. Alya wakes up covered in blood but Marcus has disappeared. Have to admit I was low-key devastated when I thought Marcus had died and was ready to rage quit if the author was planning on doing something shady. I liked how Theo and Ryland's relationship with Alya developed in Marcus' absence and got to see how much they loved him. One of my main complaints with RH is when the author never shows why the guys would agree to become a harem. But here the guys loved each other enough to share their happiness even if it's with the same girl. Alya definitely underwent some character growth in a direction I'm enjoying. Love when heroines toughen up and started scheming with the guys. Made sense since they were thrown a huge curve-ball with Victoria, another crafty player in the game to become Luca's successor. They guys showed Alya that they'd do anything for her (pedo assholes get the wall). Wish more progress had been made with finding Alya's brother. Would like to know the meaning behind her dreams. I'm curious what Luca's endgame is with the reveal at the end.

Holy smokes! Another amazing read from Callie Rose and man oh man, do the stakes just keep getting higher and higher!

We pick up right away after Sweet Obsession ends and it doesn’t take but a few pages for the emotions to kick in!

If you thought Ayla was strong in SO, just wait until you see how FIERCE she becomes here. She’s ready to stand by her men and fight for them, just as they are doing for her. She won’t back down and she’ll never let go.

Marcus, Theo, and Ry all set up to the plate in this book and we see just how much they function as one unit. They’re brothers to the end and you really get to understand the meaning behind that.

There’s plenty of action, intrigue, and steam in this book and I absolutely loved it. I cannot wait to see how everything comes together in book three!

This book picks up right where book one ended. And let me tell you my heart was racing trying to figure out what happened. With this book we get to see Ayla’s relationship with Theo and Ryland really grow and I loved how these three really leaned on each other. There are some twists in this book, you’re able to figure them out but they are still good twists. I think the plot of this book stepped up and I can’t wait to read the last book. The cliffhanger of this book wasn’t as good as the last book, but I think that it will lead really well into the last one.

Callie is going to kill me. At least, I think she's trying to. This book was a roller coaster and it's only the second installment. This book was an adrenaline rush, full of steamy scenes and so many twists I didn't see coming. I flew through this book in a few hours, and even though I saw that final cliffhanger moment coming, it didn't make it any easier.

I can already tell book 3 is going to be a rush, and I absolutely cannot wait. This series is nailing it.
