I'm a pretty big fan of the Flash, but these days I'm mostly a fan of the character, and not so much the title. Venditti's New 52 Barry Allen just never managed to reach out and grab me by the feels, you know? I don't hate this Flash, but...

description

I found the last volume somewhat confusing, but the end result was that a (somewhat mental) future version of Barry has taken our Flash's place in this timeline. And he's determined to fix all of the mistakes he made in his past (our future).

description

Where's the real Barry, you ask?
Well, he's been poofed into some strange section of the Speed Force that looks like the Savage Land.
Wait. Could this be in Marvel's universe?!
*ponders ramifications*
Ok. Yeah. Probably not...

Anyway, he's trying to find a way back to his life (and Patty...who I still hate), but he's tied up fighting off dinobots and time displaced Paleo-Indians. <--I swear!

description

Meanwhile, Future Flash is getting all crazy, and kicks off his mistake fixing by going after the villains before they have a chance to commit any crimes.
Um. Not exactly Barry's usual style, but the results don't lie, people!
So. Future Flash leans toward the ultra violent Punisheresque style of fighting the bad guys, right? Which wouldn't be a bad thing if:
A) He was the Punisher & B) He lived in the Marvel universe.
But he's not & he doesn't. And since the Flash is known for being a big softie, you can hardly blame his Rogues for being a tad shocked when he chops of one of their new member's arms...

description

After that Patty starts to put two and two together!
Sadly, she's not slick enough to realize that this dude in the blue suit is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BARRY, but she does figure out that he's responsible for that other spoilery thing he did.
Naturally, she (and Iris) start plotting to bring him down.

description

Ok. To me, that was such a dick move on her part. I mean, Barry Allen wouldn't do something like that, and if she's supposedly in love with him, she should know something was fishy. Investigate it, bitch! You don't just assume the man you love has suddenly had a complete personality override, especially not when you live in the comic book world. There's always the evil twin, evil clone, or evil alternate reality version of someone floating around, you know? And don't forget he could always be under the control of some giant psychic gorilla!
And Patty should know all of this, because she lives in a world where the impossible is a daily occurrence, so the leap she made from That's Suspicious to Barry is Pure Evil was a poor plot device. <--my opinion
I mean, unless the point was to make her appear to be a horribly unsympathetic character that we all believe Barry would be better off without? Because, is so, Bravo!

description

And considering the ending , that may have been Venditti's master plan.

Whatever.
Eventually, Barry returns from the Speedy Savage Land (yeah, that's what I'm calling it), and a showdown ensues!

description

There are several villains in this one, but I'd have to spoil the entire plot to explain who they are and what role they play in how this all pans out, so I'm just gonna let you find that out for yourself.
Hey, did anyone else think this guy was Gentleman Ghost, at first?

description

This was not the worst story I've ever read about Flash, and it was an improvement on the last volume, if for nothing other than the fact that I could easily follow what the hell was happening.
Still...

They gave us an ending in this book to the future Flash's story. I don't know, I'm sure it's just me, but I didn't think it was a great conclusion or an excellent storyline. The think how they have turned the speed force into this living mysterious thing is strange.

People see Flash killing people or trying too and they get concerned. Iris is about to write a terrible article about this. I guess that would be the Zac Snyder version of the Flash. Anyway.

I don't really have a lot to say on this. It was an ok story with an ok conclusion and it was entertaining to read.

I hate Brett Booth's design style. Future Flash, like every other character Booth designs, looks like he stepped out of Tron. He panel design is very confusing to follow as there's no natural left to right, top to bottom pattern to follow. The panels float in the main frame as if they were just trapped in the Phantom Zone.

The story is OK. There are some leaps in the story which make it hard to follow. Like how Barry is examining all the bodies from Forever Evil and then he's suddenly examining someone from months before that. The dialogue feels very spare and stilted and the characters motives and personalities change on a dime to fit the story they want to tell. Venditti and Jensen need to read some Bendis books to learn how humans speak.

Received an advance copy byDC and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a great read!

Its a great story and I love the way the writers use familiar trope but make the story so much more epic than it has to be and the focus on two Barry's with two different experiences and making it so much more personal, one full of optimism and hope and the other devoid of hope, its such a brilliant parallel and then making them face off against villains like Overload and Savitar and doing the villain turned hero turn is awesome and I love that for it! Its brilliantly written and there are a lot of metaphors here and explosions but its the art that I love more, its so dynamic and full of energy and makes this arc much more epic. Loved the whole thing, one of the best volumes easily!

The Wally West Flash of the '90s always felt a bit lacking, compared to the Barry Allen Flash I had grown up with.
And now, full circle, the Barry Allen Flash of the New 52 pales compared to Wally before him. Harrumph.

Not a fan of "Land of the Speed Force Beyond Time" story-line nor the other one, the "Barry of Future Past" plot.

Picking up where the story was left off in the previous story-arc, writer Robert Venditti sends Barry into a mysterious world within the Speed Force as he struggles to find a way back to his timeline, while the newest Flash takes advantage of Barry's absence to take his place and give himself another chance at life. While it was entertaining to some extent, with some decent artwork to accompany the narrative, there's something in this new Flash that demands a certain aversion towards his existence, making it difficult to truly enjoy this story-arc.

After the last book disappointed me (You can read Connor’s review of Vol. 6 here.), I wasn’t in to big of a hurry to open this one up. But it was holiday break, and I was bored. (Plus, the Flash is my favorite superhero, so that might have something to do with it too.) Once I started Savage World I really liked it though. Have to warn everyone that you really need to read the book before this one to understand what is going on though.

description

Okay, so this story is about the Flash being trapped in some weird place in the Speed Force. A place which looks an awful lot like the Savage Lands in Marvel Comics, filled with dinobots and Paleo-Indians.

While Barry is gone, a crazy future version of the Flash shown up in Central City. This blue suit impostor determined to fix all the mistakes he made in his past (which is Barry’s future). His method to just take out the baddies before they can do anything wrong. This new attitude reminding me a lot of the Punisher from Marvel Comics.

description

Quickly, Barry’s Rogues, Patty, and Iris become shocked by the new Barry’s methods. The two women in our heroes life conspiring to bring him down. (I’m going to go ahead and admit here that I have never liked Patty at all, and she finally earns my hate by so easily turning on Barry.)

But Barry — the real Barry — is still busy trying to get back home. Eventually, he does, and a big fight happens!

description

Sure, I’ve liked other Flash stories better than this one, but for the kind of book it was, Savage World was pretty amazing. It had a cool story, good character, interesting villains, and amazing drawing. For me, this book was just all around awesome!

Well, I hope you liked this review, and friend me any time to talk about my reviews or comic books.

I've decided that I don't like Robert Venditti or Brett Booth and right now they are holding Flash (and others) hostage.

This book was pretty awful. In my head, I'm starting to liken Booth's art style to Rob Liefeld. Over muscled, over shiny, all action, weird poses, ignoring actual anatomy, etc. I've seen worse, but whatever appreciation I had for him in the past is long gone.

The story was...there. It was just starting to get complex but then everything just resolved. The main thread was a carry over from the previous volume. It has the makings of something that could have reset the status quo for the Flash for quite some time. Instead, all of the questions were answered almost immediately, and the mystery was wrapped up just about as cleanly and explicitly as possible.

It wrapped up with another issue AGAIN going over Flash's origin. It wasn't part of the actual series, it was one of the Secret Origins tales, but it was still unnecessary at this point. It might have been to bring some attention to the reintroduction of Thawne to the mythos.

Still, the whole thing felt like a wasted opportunity, the characters were completely flat, and the art was incredibly disappointing. Just hanging on for a new creative team.

The horror and stupidity of the previous novel continues, as Barry Allen is a victim of character assassination by Robert Venditti and his "bitter" Barry Allen from the future.

Welcome to the Savage Land World, Barry!

Really cool splash page art that evoked the heyday of Francis Manapul's creator run, made all the cooler by Hoopla's digital comics interface on my phone- thanks Oakville Public Library!

The story...well, the Big Bad was kind of telegraphed, and Iris West certainly did seem quick to judge and opportunistic in ways that didn't jive with my understanding of her character...but then again I'm more familiar with her TV incarnation, truth be told, than her pre-New 52 self.

All in all, a welcome volume to get things back up to speed...

Just okay...really all I can say. Didn't grab me, didn't necessarily bore me, just really wasn't much here worth commenting on... hoping for better next time...or at least hoping for better in Rebirth...

The Flash, Vol. 7: Savage World sees Barry transported to a savage land with a mixture of technologies and different people throughout! :D His seeming random meeting with Selkirk has a twist that neatly turns things on its head! :D The world is cleverly done and the world build is bit up brilliantly! :D Barry's future self is living it up in Central City with Patty and this makes for clever twists to boot in plotlines that spread in unguessable directs that will keep you on the your edge of your seat! :D

The Flash, Vol. 7: Savage World art is style is crisp and precise with both central city and The Savage World all being clearly portrayed! :D The panels design as well brilliantly supports a scrip that never lets up from the beginning really putting the characters through the wringer while at the same time picking up old plots and setting new ones up in fast-paced relentless way! :D

The Flash, Vol. 7: Savage World is a a fast-paced adventure with temporal twists and turns! :D The turns neatly continue ongoing plots while at the same time moving things forward and setting up the new plots! :D The Flash, Vol. 7: Savage World is full of heroics, action, grandstanding, adventure, word building, heroics, daring do and Running! :D Brilliant Crisp High Five! :D Get it When You Can! :D

The Flash Vol. 7: Savage World

Barry Allen's fight with the future version of himself - an embittered Flash from twenty years hence - has caused him to be expelled into the Speed Force. While Barry strives to return to reality, his future doppelganger is creating waves by becoming increasingly aggressive to the point of hurting others.

The character work allows us to see the differences in the two Barrys and the layout keeps the story moving while colours clearly define the different realities. This was a joy to read and was an outstanding volume within the collection.

This may be all in my head but I feel like every Flash story lately revolves around time travel, tapping into the speed force, alternate realities...kinda tired of it. Also I hate when comic art is just confusing and has no logic to it. If you agree with me on these points I would stay away from this particular book

So this one finishes up what the last one started. The art is decent, but none of the modern day comic art is GREAT, actually I've found little comic art I find GREAT. On top of that, the story is just ok. I've got a few more volumes to go, and then on to Rebirth next month, to see if I can make sense of all the speedsters.

This volume was a solid, good read.
I really liked the continuation of the plot of Barry, his future self and all the complications and problems that go along with it. It was interesting and fun to read about. Surprisingly, I enjoyed Patty's character in Savage World quite a bit. I feel like she was super down to earth, realistic and sympathetic. Iris on the other hand unnerved me to no end. I really did not like how she was portrayed in this volume. Moreover, I liked the character arc Barry-from-the-future got as well as seeing how Barry fared on an island beyond time and space.
Overall, I was continually engaged and intrigued in the story and where it was going. The art was good as well. I'm excited to see what adventures await the Flash next.

Some interesting concepts surrounded by dumb character logic, and pacing issues.

I really did not enjoy the last arc by Venditti and Booth. The characters were stupid the time travel logic was incomplete, so this second arc better fix that.

World: I'm still iffy about Booth's art, the action looks great and so do the splash pages bit his character faces are just wrong. World building is just as sloppy as last time. It's just all over the place in terms odd consistency. Yes this is a time travel book but there still needs to be some sense of logical consistency, it's all over the place. Not good at all.

Story: The strongest part of his book but that's really not saying much. The idea here is interesting, evil Barry could have been a drama goldmine, but the poor characterization really kills the story. The end and the beginning also really piss me off, with the wasting of Wally and the ridiculous rule bending deus ex end. Yuck.

Characters: Terrible. 1 don't waste Wally like that, it's stupid and a waste of a major character. 2 Future Barry and his 180° turn in the end was unwarranted and out of character. As was Patty and Iris. Just absolutely terrible, they don't act like they should and that's just bad writing. I'm done talking about this mess is a book.

This is terrible. 12 issues in, it's time for a creative team change. You can't help but compare this to the tv show and it is a fair comparison, one is going into the heart of the character and giving us great drama, the other is giving us lazy half baked stories with terrible characters.

Yuck, change creative team please!

Onward to the next book!

I love it! I haven't managed to get into the DC alternate Earth's but I love the Speed Force. Here in volume 7, Barry finds himself being chased by dinosaurs and high-tech robots when he becomes trapped in the Speed Force. There he finds a community of humans from various time eras past and present with a leader who has an uncanny knowledge of the Speedsters. Meanwhile back on Earth, a future but younger version of Barry Allen in a blue suit has turned up, full of vengeance to capture a killer whom he was never able to catch in his version of the past, called Overload. Lots of action and excitement, the two storylines worked well together and kept me turning the pages. Very exciting end with the return of a new old villain. In the background, we have Patty and Barry's relationship being examined and the book ends with a one-off backstory of The Flash's origin story with the murder of his mother and imprisonment of his father.

Venditti continues to tell a great Flash tale that once more feels like it's a natural successor to Mark Waid's strong stories of the '90s.

In this one we've got two tales. Future Flash has taken over Barry's place in the real world, while Barry fights to escape the Speed Force. Both plot threads are intriguing. In the real world, we get great interactions with Barry's supporting cast and a great look at who Barry could become 20 years down the road. In the speed force, we get wacky adventures in a savage world.

And a Waid-influenced wouldn't be complete without a battle with another speedster, would it? Honestly, that's probably the weakest part of this storyline, but it's still a nice touchback.

Recomendado!

I feel as if I should just copy and paste this sentence into all conversations I have about Flash anymore- I am sick of all the Speed Force bs! At least in this volume it has a new twist to it and an engaging story. The sections of this book that take place in Central City are the ones I like best- as the "new" Flash sharing Superman's mentality from "Injustice" of killing the bad guys instead of imprisoning them!

First half was lame. Lots of inconsistencies with drawings. (At one point Barry looked like he could have been a Trump son.) didn't like the storyline, but I appreciated the Thawne line. Oh! And Patty finally left him, which hopefully makes more room for Iris? <3
