I'll be honest, my previous knowledge of Norse Mythology all came from Marvel and Disney. They got some of it right, but most of it they bent to their cinema, which is fine, but it was nice to learn the truth. The Norse people were interesting and built upon strength and courage. This was a great book that delved just far enough that I understand while also covering a lot of aspects.

Norse mythology is so interesting. I loved learning about their funeral rites and practices, even if it was a wee bit upsetting. My favorite myth definitely is the giantess pissing in a river to stop Thor lmfao.

I don’t really like the Norse myths. I don’t understand the attraction Lewis and Tolkien felt to them. I have listened to a few books on audio trying to “get it.” This one didn’t enchant me, either, and I still feel like I’m missing something and don’t understand how it works. I wouldn’t recommend this one for teens or kids because of explicit references to immorality or how a god of fertility is portrayed. I also wouldn’t recommend any of this series on audio, because I think these books would be more helpful if you could reference them to look up a story or identify a character. I wouldn’t recommend this for someone who knows Norse mythology well; it’s an overview. Finally I don’t agree with the author when he tries to “preach” or interpret the myths. For example, it’s possible that Christians altered some of the myths as he said, but is it also possible that the Biblical story of a Flood actually happened, and that’s WHY myths all over the world include a flood story?

great book especially for people newer to the subject. organised clearly and concisely making for a very easy read. covers not only the key stories, but also overview of the gods, realms, other creatures and even context about the vikings and their way of life.
well researched, sometimes misses out details but fits the short overview style of writing, making it exceptional for beginners as it lays out the facts in a quick yet still captivating way.

thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. wonderful for looking back to remember the different gods and can never go wrong with reading the tales.

After finishing the first book in this series on Greek mythology, I suspected the real value would come from comparison rather than any individual volume. This book confirmed that suspicion. Reading Norse mythology alongside Greek mythology made the differences between the traditions far clearer, not only in their gods and stories, but in their outlook and structure.

I also found this volume more engaging than its predecessor. Whether because Norse mythology lends itself to a more cohesive narrative or because the author found a stronger stride, the book spent more time telling the story itself rather than simply introducing the cast of characters. I came away with a better sense of the overarching mythology as well as the individual figures within it.

One point I found myself reflecting on was the book's occasional psychological interpretation of the myths. While there is certainly value in reading mythology through that lens, I think it should be done with some caution. It is easy for modern readers to project symbolic or psychological meanings onto stories that were, for the people who lived them, part of a genuine religious and cultural worldview. Those interpretations may be insightful, but they should not automatically replace the perspective of those who first believed them.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and accessible introduction, and it has only increased my interest in continuing through the series and seeing how the world's mythologies compare and diverge.

This is an excellent resource book for when you encounter Norse Mythology in your reading, or if you wish to use some of it in your writing. The book is very well-organized, with numerous complex stories broken down and simplified by character and event. The information is very thorough, and for those of us who wonder how to pronounce the words and names, it has a complete pronunciation dictionary in the back of the book. I highly recommend this book as a useful resource and an entertaining read.

A different take and good read

This is a good book that clearly was well researched. I do like the style and writing of this book, but I did disagree or dislike a few parts of the stories, which is only because I've read these stories somewhere else first, as of course the first way in most cases of a story is your "right way" Definitely worth the read, I'm sure this book will make its way into my repeat pile.

Enlightening

After finding that I am descended from this area of the world I was curious as to the beliefs and lives of my ancestry. I thoroughly enjoyed the explanations, stories and how we still live these beliefs in our modern age. After reading this book, I am excited to continue learning about Norse/Viking beliefs and ideas, how they lived their lives.

It’s OK. More annoying typos and grammatical errors than I would have liked. Not very entertaining in the way the stories are presented. I think if an Old Norse skald had related the stories as they are told in this book everyone around the hearth would have fallen asleep. In short there are better works out there.
