Uncovering Norse Mythology: A Guide Into Norse Gods and Goddesses, Viking Warriors and Magical Creatures

Rate this book
Delve into the fascinating history of Norse mythology with these thrilling tales of battle and magic…What do you think of when you hear the words "Norse mythology"?

Chances are, your mind goes straight to Thor or Odin, some of the most well-known Nordic gods.

But their stories barely scratch the surface of the complicated and fascinating myths of ancient Scandinavia.

As Germanic tribes clashed and reconciled, a rich and detailed realm of the gods was created through the melding and exchanging of stories and characters that reflected the complicated historical events around them.

The clash of the Vanir and the Aesir, or the old and new gods, is thought to be indicative of a real conflict between two tribes that later found a way to coexist.

Through developing an understanding of the stories that remain, you will learn about the intricacies of ancient Nordic culture.

Beginning with the historical background of the Viking Age, you will become familiar with the creation myth and discover the complicated family trees that the gods and goddesses of Asgard created.

You'll uncover the most important figures in Nordic culture and find out how their existence continues to be relevant in the modern day.

In Uncovering Norse Mythology, here is just a fraction of what you will

How these legends have endured to present day, and the historical relics that have contributed to their longevityThe stories, powers, and complicated relationships of the most important Norse gods and goddessesA history of the Viking Age and the unique environment that contributed to the development of their ideals and beliefsHow the Norse people explained the nature of natural phenomena such as shuddering earthquakes and rumbling thunderstormsThe lasting impact these stories have on the present, and how they have continued to impact our modern worldWhat the meanings of the names indicate about the gods, goddesses, giants, and myriad of other creatures that exist in the collective mythologyAnd much more.

From heart-stopping treachery to displays of pure bravery, you'll find yourself immersed in the drama and sorrow of the old gods. Your journey will take you through the Nine Realms as you uncover the philosophy and morals that this ancient culture revered most.

I don’t really like the Norse myths. I don’t understand the attraction Lewis and Tolkien felt to them. I have listened to a few books on audio trying to “get it.” This one didn’t enchant me, either, and I still feel like I’m missing something and don’t understand how it works. I wouldn’t recommend this one for teens or kids because of explicit references to immorality or how a god of fertility is portrayed. I also wouldn’t recommend any of this series on audio, because I think these books would be more helpful if you could reference them to look up a story or identify a character. I wouldn’t recommend this for someone who knows Norse mythology well; it’s an overview. Finally I don’t agree with the author when he tries to “preach” or interpret the myths. For example, it’s possible that Christians altered some of the myths as he said, but is it also possible that the Biblical story of a Flood actually happened, and that’s WHY myths all over the world include a flood story?

great book especially for people newer to the subject. organised clearly and concisely making for a very easy read. covers not only the key stories, but also overview of the gods, realms, other creatures and even context about the vikings and their way of life.
well researched, sometimes misses out details but fits the short overview style of writing, making it exceptional for beginners as it lays out the facts in a quick yet still captivating way.

thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. wonderful for looking back to remember the different gods and can never go wrong with reading the tales.

5/5, would easily recommend

This is an excellent resource book for when you encounter Norse Mythology in your reading, or if you wish to use some of it in your writing. The book is very well-organized, with numerous complex stories broken down and simplified by character and event. The information is very thorough, and for those of us who wonder how to pronounce the words and names, it has a complete pronunciation dictionary in the back of the book. I highly recommend this book as a useful resource and an entertaining read.

Mythology has fascinated me since I was introduced to it in eighth grade English class. I was largely unfamiliar with Norse myths outside of what I had seen in television and movies. We all know how that can be skewed from the original to fit the plot. I enjoyed reading this book and learning more about Norse myths

A different take and good read

This is a good book that clearly was well researched. I do like the style and writing of this book, but I did disagree or dislike a few parts of the stories, which is only because I've read these stories somewhere else first, as of course the first way in most cases of a story is your "right way" Definitely worth the read, I'm sure this book will make its way into my repeat pile.

Enlightening

After finding that I am descended from this area of the world I was curious as to the beliefs and lives of my ancestry. I thoroughly enjoyed the explanations, stories and how we still live these beliefs in our modern age. After reading this book, I am excited to continue learning about Norse/Viking beliefs and ideas, how they lived their lives.

This was one of my introductions to mythology. I enjoyed the touch of historical background and how he formatted this. It was easy to follow and full of details. What more could you want from a middle-aged mythology nerd (with upmost respect)? Jokes aside, this is very beginner friendly and recommended it to anybody who is interested in the old Norse.

It’s OK. More annoying typos and grammatical errors than I would have liked. Not very entertaining in the way the stories are presented. I think if an Old Norse skald had related the stories as they are told in this book everyone around the hearth would have fallen asleep. In short there are better works out there.

I really liked this overview of Norse mythology. I knew very little about Norse mythology prior to reading this book (except from watching the Thor movies), and this gave me the information I was looking for.

I found this book excellent. Written in a way that's easy to understand and take in what I was reading. I found there to be much more useful information and knowledge in there than what I originally expected. Definitely a book I will read again and recommend to others.

Great Read-Overview of Norse Myth

This is very much a broad overview that covers lots of brain points and interesting people/gods and stories. It does not dig into great detail but gives you enough information to start your journey.

A beginner's guide to Norse mythology if you're completely new to it. The story of Fenrir was repeated once, and there were a few grammatical errors but overall a pretty good Norse read if you're just getting into it.

I read this book at work during my breaks. At first it was confusing because there were so many gods, goddesses and mystical creatures. But the farther I got, the more it all started to click and it became much easier to follow.

A brief overview of Norse gods, myths, and culture. It was fine, but I found it a bit repetitive and as someone who does know a lot of the myths, it did not yield any new knowledge.

3.5 good intro explains well but it didn’t bring the myths to life the way other similar books did. It did the job it set out to do but not anything else

I was excited to read this book, but it was pretty disappointing. First, there were too many obvious editing errors: typos, incorrect grammar, awkward formatting. I read this as a physical book, but it's clearly meant to be an ebook. The author references ebook a few times, and the black and white images are barely discernable in physical format. Additionally, it felt like the author repeated himself a lot. The same things were said in almost every chapter. I also feel the sections were way too short. The way the book was organized is good in theory, but in practice, the author didn't really have enough to say to warrant all the sections and subsections. Finally, prior to reading this book, I already had a solid background in Norse mythology, and this book added very little to my knowledge base. If the book was twice as long, with more depth to each section, and was edited properly, I might have a different opinion. But as it is, I came away pretty disappointed.
