He's my mentor and off-limits. So why can’t I stay away from him?

As Dr. Carolina Ramirez’s career is taking off, she gets incredible news. Dr. Hector Medina, the doctor she idolized as a teenager and whose research she used to design her cutting-edge clinical trial, is joining her team. As her boss.

But they say you should never meet your heroes, and Carolina is about to get far more than she bargained for. She knows a liaison with her boss is a bad idea. But in addition to the intellectual spark they share, there’s an undeniable physical connection between them she can’t seem to ignore.

Then it all goes wrong and instead of explaining himself, he skips town, nearly destroying her—and her career—in his wake.

Seven years later, he’s back and opening up old wounds she’d thought long healed. She’s recovered her career, her reputation, and her confidence despite his devastating betrayal. She should hate him. Instead, she finds herself drawn to him once again.
Why can’t she get him out of her head? And why does her body still react to him after so many years apart?

This steamy, slow-burn, medical romance has a wonderful happily ever after and is perfect for fans of Mariana Zapata, Alexis Daria, and TL Swan.

“My father was a proud man. He was a strong, hardworking , old school Mexican man. A man that didn’t cry, and still, he’d let me see him cry exactly twice. There was never any shame in it. “

Remission- Ofelia Martinez 🩺💛

Caro & Hector are so cute. This back and forth attraction and battle of wits was very charming. I enjoyed Caro’s headstrong mindset throughout the story. She is the pride of her family. Her love for her patients as well as her family was so beautiful. Hector I think was so charming, so educated, but human as well. He did not come off as pompous, but a work in progress.

Ofelia writes in a way that the characters feel like family members and friends. The intimate connection and details, whether it’s an experience, a place, or a meal, you feel like you know these characters. Remission was an excellent crafted story of family, love, and career. 💛

I went in not knowing much about this book. I just signed up to read the arc, to help support a new Latina romance author. I must say this was a surprising treat.

From the start, her characters were captivating, full of charm, sass, and heart. Dr. Carolina Ramirez was fierce, inspiring, a total badass oncologist. I totally have a little bit of a girl crush on her. The way she cares for her patients, friends and family was so heart warming to read. The character development, the storyline, the cancer research/hospital setting was all well thought out. I really enjoyed reading about the blossoming relationship between Carolina Ramirez and Hector Medina, her mentor/boss, from work colleagues to friends to lovers, that expanded over nine years. It was super slow burn, making their chemistry so intense and full of sexual tension as their relationship developed, it sizzled off the page. Hector was the perfect book boyfriend, he was selfless when it came to his desires toward Carolina, making sure not to hurt her reputation and career. Overall, this story was sweet, relatable, and definitely hit home for me. So many, great references to Mexican culture and it captured a lot of the mannerisms of Latinos. Ofelia Martinez’s debut novel was so wonderful to read and a great start to a series. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series.

If you like a super slow burn, medical drama romance, mixed in with a forbidden workplace romance and a strong female main character, then you should give this book a read.

The best way to describe this book is Kulti but instead of a sports slow burn romance it is a medical slow burn romance. Hector and Carolina gave me some angst as well and a dash of heartbreak with some things that happened. I wanted to give this a 5 star but couldn't as it was still missing that special something to send it over the edge. However, don't get me wrong I really loved the story and I know I will remember it but I needed maybe a little more...more. More groveling maybe from Hector. I know that the reasons why things happened and the fallout were explained but I still needed more. At this point I sound like a broken record but overall it was a great read and recommend it to everyone who loves these types of books. Happy reading!

Simplemente genial.

This barely had any steam (you have to get about 70% through to get to that point) and I felt like it had way more potential than what was given. Hector’s demeanor and weird mood swings were just odd on top of the plot. The love story didn’t feel believable. The chemistry wasn’t there. I don’t know. I expected more.

Remission isn’t my typical read, but I was excited at the idea of trying something new. This book was my first peek into medical romance and I am so glad!

I have not stopped recommending this book to all of my book-loving friends since I started reading. I had an incredibly difficult time putting it down, so to speak, as I read a digital copy.

The relationships that Carolina holds with her family, friends, co-workers and patients felt very authentic and genuine to read and relate to.

Carolina and Hector’s professional relationship blossoms into romantic feelings at a rate that doesn’t feel rushed. It is a slow burn after all! The build-up had me on the edge of my seat, hoping that ‘this time’ would be when they finally had their moment. So much so, that when the moment did arrive I was almost skeptical that it was happening.

I can't wait to divulge into other characters' stories in upcoming installments in the Heartland Metro universe.

This was such a quick read because I couldn't put it down! Our hero and heroine are colleagues at a hospital. One is an up-and-coming researcher in her field, and the other is a well-established and well-respected on his own. It's a little cutesy at first (she had a crush on him when she was younger), but once the mutual attraction kicks in these two bring all the angst. All of it.

This is a second chance romance, which you discover in the prologue, and the only thing I wanted a little more of was that spice. Their chemistry was perfect, I just wanted to see more on-page connecting, if you know what I mean.

This novel delivers a perfect blend of romance, tension and humor. I was instantly enamored with Dr. Carolina Ramirez, the smart, compassionate, and spunky physician at the heart of the story. She and her boss/mentor Hector have delicious chemistry as they try to balance their careers at Heartland Metro Hospital and their growing attraction to each other. But their ambitions—and those of their rivals at the hospital—put them on a collision course. The ending is satisfying and steamy. I look forward to more stories from this talented author who has brought something new and original to the genre with her Latinx ensemble.

Remission is an amazing start to a series. The slow burn and sexual tension will keep you intrigued and wanting to turn the pages. This is an age gap/slow burn/boss employee romance. I really enjoyed the relationship between Carolina and Hector, from the beginning straight to the end. Their character development and the world Ofelia buildt was extremely satisfying. I felt all the emotions during this book and some things were unexpected and I always enjoy the unexpected tidbits that move the story to a different feel.

I received a complimentary copy of Remission and am voluntarily reviewing.

Remission is a delicious slow-burn romance, and the wait was worth it. Martinez delivered the perfect amount of chemistry and heat, while delivering up drama and pain. Carolina is one of the most relatable female leads I’ve encountered in a while. Hector is already sexier than sin, but his willingness to put Carolina’s reputation and career before his desires took him to a new level.

Overall, I loved Remission and I’m looking forward to what Martinez has in store for us in the future!

This was an extremely slow burn romance that takes place in a medical setting, as the H/h are both oncologists.

I think the premise was really good, but the medical talk overshadowed the romance, so I ended up skimming a lot of this book. HOWEVER, the author’s focus on how hard it is for minorities in the medical field (particularly minority women) was flawless. Carolina was a strong woman and you felt that on each page.

My problem is the loose ends:
- We didn’t get confirmation from Chief Stuart as to his intentions in removing Carolina’s authorship credit but I guess Hector summed up what we could assume happened.

- Who is Sara married to? I thought it was Ramiro, given how livid he was at Sara’s abusive boyfriend, but the author didn’t clearly state who her husband was. Maybe Sara’s getting her own book?

- Based on the end, it’s clear Valentina ends up with Dr. Dennis, and their story will be told in Contusion. I’m not a fan of series where we have to go back in time to hear all the history of how a couple who we know is together got together. But that’s a personal preference.

- It would’ve been nice to see Carolina’s dad reaction to his daughter’s engagement to someone he despised due to his daughter’s depression.

All in all, I’m glad I read it, but it was hard to keep my attention and I probably won’t read the next book in this series.

Remission is an engaging debut novel by Ofelia Martinez. It blends medical drama with forbidden office romance and lights a fuse for a super long slow burn.

Dr. Carolina Ramirez is the youngest oncology resident to ever win a ten million dollar research grant for her trial in cervical cancer treatment. Her achievement has attracted the attention of the man she has idolized from afar, Dr. Hector Medina, a leader in her field and now, her new boss. Their immediate chemistry will set tongues a-wagging in the hospital and cause some trouble, more for Carolina than Hector.

There is so much to love about this book: a romantic heart, compassionate characters, strong sexy role models, and elegant error-free writing. The plot has both strengths and weaknesses. It celebrates a woman of colour succeeding in a non-traditional role, but sees her personal life waylaid by men (including the one she loves) taking away her self-determining right to choose her path.

One overarching lesson, for both Carolina and the reader, is that patience is rewarded. A stellar debut!

I won this book from Ofelia Martinez 🥰

Remission is an amazing start to a series. 😉 The slow burn and sexual tension will keep you intrigued and wanting to turn the pages. This is an age gap/slow burn/boss employee romance. I really enjoyed the relationship between Carolina and Hector, from the beginning straight to the end. Their character development and the world Ofelia buildt was extremely satisfying.

This was a very slow burn but I didn’t mind that since it made sense with the story. Dr. Ramirez was a kind and caring doctor who truly cared about her patients. She was smart, strong and not impulsive and I liked that about her. Dr. Medina was a very proud man and I feel like that is true with most men, especially Hispanic men.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I recommend this book if you like a medical drama setting, with a touch of forbidden romance and a strong female main character. I will definitely be checking out other books by this author!

A really wonderful read from this new author. Remission is the first book in the Heartland Metro Hospital series. Dr Carolina Ramirez is working on a treatment for cervical cancer when she gets news that she is to work with her childhood crush, Dr Hector Medina, as her mentor.
This book is well written, the characters are beautifully created with a great chemistry. This is a very slow burn romance but is most intriguing and keeps you riveted and rooting for their HEA.
Overall, a great start to a new series of novels that I will be eagerly awaiting continuing with Contusion which is Valentina and Rory’s story!

Second- third- fourth-? Chance romance

What a ride of a debut novel! With the drama and passion of a telenovela, Ofelia Martinez creates a world of found family centered on a hospital so real I felt that I’d walked its halls. The angsty push-pull of Carolina and Hector kept me glued to my e-reader. I can’t wait to read the stories of the other characters in Heartland Hospital.

“He was asking for my permission to seal the kiss that lingered like a ghost on our lips.”

If you like slow burn, forbidden office romance, and medical drama, REMISSION by Ofelia Martinez is the book for you.

Dr. Carolina Ramirez is dedicated to her clinical trial patients and her career and she would never jeopardize them for anything or anyone. Not even for her mentor/boss/celebrity crush, Dr. Hector Medina. But people say you should never meet your heroes and the love and trust she had for the doctor vanished when he betrayed and disappeared on her for close to a decade. He left her with a broken heart and nearly destroyed her career. For years, Carolina worked diligently to rebuild her reputation and confidence in the medical field until one day, Hector returned and wants to set the record straight.

But how can she forgive him for almost destroying her and her career?

Carolina and Hector’s relationship is told in the past and the present spanning for nine years. Their attraction is instant but forbidden because he is her mentor and colleague- think of “Grey’s Anatomy” McDreamy and Meredith Grey. But Carolina pushed her romantic thoughts and impulses because she worked too hard to become a respected Latinx doctor in a male-dominated field. Not to mention the fact that Hector has his own problems in his personal life and Carolina wasn’t going to rush and jeopardize her work.

And that is why I loved reading her perspective because she is an inspiring, intelligent, strong oncologist that cares deeply for her patients and her friends and family. Readers get to see that with her patient, Valentina, who is part of her trail and her best friend, Sara, who is dealing with her own problematic relationship issues. The author did a great job with the plot spanning it from mentor/boss, work colleagues to friends and lovers over the course of nine years that definitely played the super slow burn and sexual tension trope perfectly. I just wished it was longer and see more of Hector grovelling for forgiveness lol.

If you like medical dramas with a strong Latinx lead stuck in a forbidden workplace romance, then you should go and read this book!

How much would you sacrifice for love?

Dr. Carolina Ramirez is dedicated to her clinical trial patients and her career. So dedicated that she would never jeopardize them for anything or anyone. Not even for the love of her mentor/boss, Dr. Hector Medina. The same man who betrays her and disappears from her life for close to a decade. Leaving her devastated with the rumors and fallout that almost cost her the career she loved, Carolina works diligently to rebuild her reputation and become a notable doctor in her own right. Now he is back to set the record straight, but how could she forgive him for almost destroying her.

Carolina and Hector’s relationship is told in the past and the present spanning about a decade. Their attraction is instant but forbidden because he is her boss/mentor and I respect Carolina’s decision to keep everything professional despite her growing feelings for Hector. She has worked too hard to become a respected Latina doctor in a male-dominated field just to throw it away on uncertainty. Hector is pretty messed up with his personal life and I was disappointed with how he left things so many years ago. However, his sacrifice for Carolina is to be commended considering he waited so long and risked losing her to someone else before he could explain what really happened. True love at its best.

Overall, this is an intriguing medical romance with a great representation of strong Latino characters and an intriguing plot centered on medical research and prejudices in the workplace.

Thank you to Ms. Martinez for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

Sometimes it’s hard finding diverse characters in romance, or maybe I don’t look har enough?

Either way I enjoyed the diversity portrayed in this story. For the most part all characters and side characters were minorities, which is interesting to see in the demographic area the book is based in.

I loved the heroine’s fiery and independent personality. Seeing her go through the motions of her struggles in the work place and personal life helped shape the story well rounded.

It was a slow burn and at times slow pace. So depending on your reading habits, it could be good or bad. I was in between since I liked the storyline but the slowness deterred me from binging. So unfortunately it took me longer to read than I’d like. Add on adulting and my review is way late after the release.

As a reader I personally like having dual POVs. Helps me connect with the characters better and connect with their story. So I did miss having this. I would of loved to see how Hector’s ticked. Maybe I would of sympathized with him better and actually like him as a book Boyfriend. He didn’t do it for me unfortunately. Not a lot of groveling for what he did. If the author’s goal was for me to dislike a character for what they did, it was was achieved. Regardless of it being a miscommunication, I couldn’t forgive him. After all the talk Carolina did about her career, I was disappointed in the easily forgive and forget aspect. But that’s just me as a reader. I like my women strong and my men to own up and grovel, and vice versa.

All in all it’s a cute story and great potential for an expanding series.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review!

This is an adult romance/hospital drama and takes place over nine years. This is a really slow-burn romance and has a lot of sexual tension. The romance doesn't really develop until the last 20% of the book, and even then, the relationship is the last part. The most interesting part of the book was the nine years-ago section, while the present-day section felt very rushed. This book could have used another hundred or so pages for the romantic relationship could develop more.

The author does a good job with the representation in this book. She wrote a strong and intelligent female main character. Most of the characters are Hispanic, specifically Mexican. The author integrates Spanish and Mexican culture into the book excellently and isn't afraid to write about the struggles of being a woman of color in a male-dominated field.

I think my favorite part of the was Carolina's growth as a doctor and researcher rather than the romance being Carolina and Hector. This is a great debut novel and an excellent addition to the romance genre. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Dr. Carolina Ramirez works at the Oncology department at a hospital. Since she was a young child she idolized Dr. Hector Medina and his research, So imagine her shock when she learns he’s come to work at the same hospital. She gets the opportunity of a lifetime to get her idol to mentor and work on her clinical trial. Dr. Ramirez never would have thought Dr. Medina would take credit for all her work and skip town.

Review:

This was a very slow burn but I didn’t mind that since it made sense with the story. Dr. Ramirez was a kind and caring doctor who truly cared about her patients. She was smart, strong and not impulsive and I liked that about her. Dr. Medina was a very proud man and I feel like that is true with most men, especially Hispanic men. His character was well written and he really developes during the book. I recommend this book if you like a medical drama setting, with a touch of forbidden romance and a strong female main character. I will definitely be checking out other books by this author!

3.5-4 stars!

I enjoyed this one so much! I loved reading about two successful and influential Latinx doctors basee in the Midwest - where I'm from. Martinez's knowledge in the medical field was thorough and extensive. She either works/worked in health or her researching skills and understanding of the inner workings are incredible!

Carolina was such a bad ass! Fierce and took no shit. She put herself and her career first and I loved that!

This is a slow burn romance but I wanted more angst and longing. What I missed were lingering looks, flirtatious banter, and discreet touches. I felt the story was so focused on the medical trial plot that the connection between Caro and Hector didn't get the time it needed.

I loved the maturity of both main characters but also one particular side character that we don't even meet on page. I truly respect that she wasn't the cause of jealousy or any other conflict but was a champion for Carolina and Hector.

Read this if you like: slow burn, age gap, workplace romance
CWs: misogyny, racism, loss of family member (off page) domestic abuse (off page)

3 stars, unfortunately.

it touched all the right notes (for me), it's incredibly well written and the sparks, chemistry, the feeling were all there. I ended up getting really absorbed into the story and I tried my best to find the time to finish it quickly, and see the characters get their happily ever after.

BUT the so-called reconciliation left a REALLY bitter taste in my mouth, that I just couldn't get past.
over 200 pages of "will they make it?", to have it all end in a rush was a disappointment. it didn't feel "real" - after 9 years of suffering, heartache and heartbreak, Hector gives his side of the story and in less than a day (couple of hours, actually) all is right in the world. he's forgiven and all is fogotten.

not buying it.

the book tried sooo much to make her out to be this strong, sure, smart, self-reliant woman, just to have her fall at his feet in such a short time.... felt like it went against everything I knew about her.

I will not read the next book in the series as the other characters failed to arouse my interest.
