“The Cyberpunk Upload Series” by Seth Rain, is an extraordinary intelligent dark tale that perfectly lines up with great dystopian archetypes such as “Blade Runner”, “Dark Angel” or even “Ghost in the Shell”, and possibly the best
sci-fi/dystopia of the year. Yes! I’m aware we just finished the first quarter, nevertheless, it will be extremely difficult to top. The story is set in a futuristic version on contemporary London, whose main character (Blake) is an android in love with a woman (Lola) in a world where Android and humans don’t mix, moreover, don’t cohabitate. This Boxset included all four installment on the series, into a single set: ‘Spectrum Worlds’, ‘Messiah Online’, ‘Android State’ and ‘Private Universe’.

“Spectrum Worlds”
In 2118 in Lundum, a futuristic version of London, Androids have taken over society and exiled humanity outside the boundaries of the city. The Postman, who had refused to take a personalized name, and it’s known by his job description, is about to retire, when he is forced to take on a final assignment, delivering a human to a given location. Humans are a very dangerous commodity to transport, but not even Postman with all his experience can begin to imagine the consequences of this delivery, which will change its life and perspectives forever. The story develops rapidly, unearthing a web of intrigue and secrecy whose ramifications would shake the very fundamentals of Lundun society.

“Messiah Online”
Blake’s (aka The Postman) story continues, following seamlessly the events of the previous book, just after The Postman finally chose a name for himself (Blake). Now the revolution is peeking in Lundun, and Cardinal is determined to create the very first Android State on Earth whatever it takes. But as he threatens to blow up the Net (along with over five million androids) Blake (more of less forced) joins the revolution to fight the threat, free her beloved Lola, and find the Messiah, a charismatic android who has created a new home for his followers outside Lundun. The fate of threaten androids and Lundun, even the whole world is at stake and all depends on Blake ability to control the spectrum.

“Android State”
Lundun’s androids have won the battle, humans will have to leave the city altogether or face punishment, and in Cardinal’s brand-new ‘androids-only’ regime, being human equals a death sentence. Nevertheless, Cardinal has publicly assured safe passage to all humans that leave the country, and thus Blake and Lola are forced to seek exile to escape Fr.e.dom’s & Cardinal dictatorship. However, they will soon discover that exile is not the solution, humans are being killed on sight, just for being who they are, namely humans. Once again Blake comes at crossroads and have to decide between saving himself (and the woman he loves) or saving the world, by join the rebellion. To have any chance at success Blake would have to reach control over the spectrum, but when failing to do so implies certain death for the love of your life, the task seems unattainable. With the android-only movement spreading throughout the world, Blake embarks in a journey that brings him (and Lola) from Lundun through Scotland, to mainland Europe and beyond.

“Private Universe”
is not only the continuation of Blake and Lola’s story, but a quantum leap in Blake’s character, who is one of the most complete, credible, and rounded up heroes in sci-fi/dystopian. “Spectrum Worlds” (Book 1) offered a – rather unique – origin story for Blake, someone who perfectly embodies what it is to be a hero, aka to be ‘someone who does what it must be done and needs no other reason’; it could have stopped there and Blake’s character would already have been remarkable. But the story continued, making Blake’s character truly extraordinary in the process. In “Private Universe” Blake faces his greatest challenge yet, trapped underground with the humans (Lola among them) until he figures a way to destroy the drones, escape Fr.e.dom surveillance and help the androids of Lundun to stop the Messiah and his megalomaniac plan to transfer every android into a digital heaven. The story comes full circle as the android’s ultimate fight for freedom seems to inexorably lead into lasting confinement in a digital heaven.

Seth Rain has an uncanny gift for dystopian writing, this world is carefully crafted, logical and plausible; with multidimensional characters, that despite being androids, have their unique and individual personality. Seth Rain easily masters the narrative, until the point where the reader ‘forgets’ , that these characters are supposed to be second-generation cybernetic beings going through the same struggles as their flesh counterparts, when trying to find the meaning of their own existence. Despite its very deep meaning and elaborated plot, the story is first and foremost a veritable fast-paced, action-filled, page-turner that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat, feverish turning the pages, finding answers and brand-new questions on the process. Blake is the embodiment of a hero, the one who does what must be done, lead by love and empathy and need no further reason. This is a veritable extraordinary series, that explores the meaning of existence from the POV of androids, that are a perfect mirror of us, with feelings, desires, morals, all of them in an absolute credible, even relatable way, due to Seth Rain’s genius.

Empathy for androids, an almost inhuman task 😉. It took Data a couple of seasons to gain our confidence, a trial to begin to see his point, for him to die to really shows us his true ‘humanity’, and we never really embraced B4. However, we related to Blake at first read, back when he was still only known as “The Postman”, whose only wish was to finally retire. Four books have passed since that initial encounter and Blake has shown us, as no other, the android world, with its deficiencies and advantages, but make no mistake, Blake’s talent is not his own, but very much Seth Rain’s unreachable skill to dissect and present social interaction, as well as the real meaning of being ‘human’, with uncanny precision, converting everyone of his stories into a study on human existence. The wondrous part, however, is that you don’t consciously experience it that way, you – as the reader – are immediately thrust into the action, fevering upon between the lines, ducking the punches, battles and bombs at Blake’s side until the very last page. There is not until after a couple of days later, than you realize the fully depth of the narrative, and this is also good so, for these are the books that never end to amaze.

A great series!

I actually bought book one and enjoyed it, so was lucky to be given the omnibus edition to review - what a great read!

I have reviewed each part so this is really an overview. The story is set in the future where humans and androids live but not together. Lundun is for androids. They were created by humans for them to use...

The series has themes such as power, existence, corruption, betrayal, sacrifice and love. One question stands out - does an android have as much value as a human? In my mind, each acted the same.

There's plenty of action. There's the intriguing matter of the spectrum. The entire tale is brimming with ideas and wonders. It's sad, too.

This series is well-written and thought-provoking, with a great sense of place(s). The characters are well-defined and fit perfectly into the story.

I loved it.

Highly recommended.

I hadn't read any Cyberpunk books before this, so wasn't sure what to expect. I had read Seth's previous Humanity series and thoroughly enjoyed it.

From the start of book 1, I knew that I was going to enjoy it. Androids coexisting with humans? The writing throughout the series is excellent and the stories draw you in until the end.

Great series, highly recommend it if you enjoy this genre, or you're curious about this type of genre. Give it a chance, you won't regret it.

These were fast-paced, interesting reads, that I found I did not want to put down! The stories were imaginative, fresh, original and exciting with characters that are realistic and likable. Highly recommended boxed set for those that enjoy settling in on a rainy day with a pot of coffee and some captivating sci-fi.

*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

I don't even think I've completed a single chapter, and "GD" has already been dropped twice. Just totally uncalled for.
