The Deville Brothers #2

Rescued by a Devil

Rate this book

He vowed to never trust her again

It had taken a single look at Miss Bethany Carlow for Nathanial Deville to fall in love. He’d believed she’d felt the same, until he received the note stating she didn’t return his affections. The following day she’d disappeared.

Devastated, Nathan put his shattered heart back together and declared love was no longer for him. Now cynical, and untrusting, two years has taught him many things, hiding his emotions being one of them. An excellent skill that he calls upon when he steps into a ballroom and sees Beth again.

She vows to do what it takes to protect those she loves

A threat to her family had forced Beth from London and the man she loved. Only a greater threat would have her stepping back into society to face him again.

His veneer like hers is civil, but those eyes tell her he will never forgive her perfidious behavior. In fact he loathes her, and while every hateful look inflicts pain she is here for a purpose. A deceitful treasonous purpose that will save those she loves. Can she do what must be done or will Nathan unmask her?

He is bound by a legacy to protect the monarchy. She has vowed to do what it takes to keep her family safe. Can they find their way back to each other in the face of danger, when they are on different sides?

From USA Today bestselling author Wendy Vella comes a sizzling new series full of passion, scandals and intrigue. Tasked with protecting the King, the Deville brothers are part of a secret alliance forged centuries ago, but when it comes to affairs of the heart they are yet to be tamed.

Three years have passed since Miss Bethany Carlow broke off her relationship with Nathanial Deville and fled London. A threat to her family forced Beth from town, and it's also the reason she has returned. Nathan has hardened his heart since Beth's betrayal, but his attraction didn't die and is hard to ignore when they are thrown back together.

This is the second book in the Deville Brother's series. It is my first time reading a story by Vella, and I would recommend starting with book one since there are family members and a large cast of secondary characters to get to know.

Usually stories with a separation and reunion tend to focus on a easily cleared up misunderstanding. I like that that did not really happen here. Beth IS keeping a secret but, from the beginning, characters close to the hero and heroine are expressing doubts and saying that things are not what they seem.

I like the way the events played out, but thought the ending was too abrupt (there is a bonus epilogue available to Vella's email subscribers and that may help). Overall, I liked the characters and the humor, and I would read this author again.

Tropes: Second Chance Romance, Spy/Government Work, Protector (sort of)

Steam Rating: 1.5 (one full and one interrupted scene)

* I received a copy from the author and this is my honest review.

Bethany Carlow and Nathanial Deville fell in love quickly, but it was real, or so he thought, until she sent him a note detailing her lack of regard for him and then disappeared. Nathan nursed his broken heart and three years later has become a cynic skilled at hiding his emotions. This practice comes in handy when he sees her in a ballroom again after all this time.

Bethany was forced to leave London and the man she loved in order to keep her family safe. She’s only back in society now because of an even more dire threat. Nathan is civil but Bethany can tell he hasn’t forgiven her. She can feel the animosity in his glares, but she can’t let that stop her. She has a reason for being there, even if it means committing treason to protect her family. But doing so without Nathan learning the truth will be nearly impossible.

I really liked this premise of the heroine secretly in danger and I was happy to see a second chance story that didn’t dwell in flashbacks to the MCs’ previous relationship. I do think Beth’s deception was carried on too long though, and much of her decision making was faulty. Her willingness to sacrifice others as long as she and her parents stayed safe also made her difficult to like. That said, Beth was also a very human, and therefore flawed, heroine, so her conflict was relatable. I still wish she hadn’t been so rude to Nathan, especially after she was finally honest with him, and her rashness put him in a lot of danger that could’ve been avoided. I wanted more open communication between them and sooner and for her to trust Nathan more, as he’d given her no reason not to, despite her claims that he never really knew her. The romance here was perhaps not as strong as it could’ve been, but the storyline was original and enjoyable and the close relationship between the Deville brothers was my favorite aspect.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Blog link: https://mustreadalltheromance.blogspo...

Rescued by a Devil is a SCRUMPTIOUS GEM! If you love swoon-worthy historical romance, starring endearing heroes, sassy heroines and a family of irresistible charmers this is definitely the book/series for you!

Wendy Vella has captured the nuances of Beth and Nathan’s emotions, the heartbreak that both endured the disappointment and anger that Nathan experienced the first time he sees Beth after so long.
Beth has to keep strong and keep her heart from breaking all over again, every time she looks into Nathan’s eyes all she can see is anger and something else....she can’t jeopardise her family and the years she suffered her broken heart but she can’t keep away from him.

So much fun reading the second instalment and I so enjoyed seeing past characters, love the banter, witty dialogue and the sizzling connection between the main characters. This was a fantastic read with plenty of intrigue, miss understanding heartbreak and last but not least a very happy ending!
I highly recommend Wendy Vella she’s a phenomenal writer, make sure you grab your copy you won’t be disappointed.
I received a complimentary copy from the author, this is my honest opinion.

This is the second book of the Deville's series.
It's a second chance love story mixing humor, love and there's some excitement thrown into the mix. If you've read any of the other book by Wendy Vella you might recognize some of the other peerage. Always nice to meet the Sinclairs or Langley sisters.

Just as the other Deville brothers it took me some time to decide whether I like Bethany or not... But she totally won me over.

You can read this book without having red the first, or any other books by Wendy, but it's more fun if you've read some...

5 out of 5 strars...

⭐⭐⭐💫
3½ stars.

➕ What I liked :

Interesting side characters.

Second chance romance.

Some of the funny parts.
(Mostly between the brothers.)

Interesting plot.

Rather interesting main characters.

Rather good action scenes.

OK romantic build up and chemistry.

➖ What I disliked:

Dragged in some parts.

The heroine is too naive/innocent and clueless/ignorant about her own body and sex even for that time period.

Off-putting theme/vibe in some parts of the story.
(The heroine had been beaten and assaulted and people had tried to kill her among other things, and after this incident and just a day later when the heroine is still bruised and has discomfort wants to have sex and it is the heroine that more or less initiates it and wants to have sex… hardly any time was given for the heroine to heal physically and mentally from that trauma.)

Believability issues.

That it took the brothers and the hero so long to even begin understanding that there was something going on with the heroine and her family.
They were very slow on the uptake… especially considering their job/assignment for the king.
(The hero and his brothers should really have connected the clues about the heroine much faster.)

The secrets and misunderstandings went on for too long.

Issues were resolved too easily and too quickly.
(Mostly about what the heroine and her family did, but some other stuff too.)

Read an excerpt of Nathan and Beth's story below:

“You’re tense, Zacherial said out the side of his mouth. “Your teeth will shatter if you keep that jaw clenched for much longer.
Nathan looked at his family members who walked before him. Why was he suddenly uneasy?
“I am fine.”
“No, you’re not.”
“Shut up.”
“Make me,” Zach taunted as only a younger brother could. A brother who knew that Nathan was an easy mark to taunt, or once had been. The last few years had seen a change in him. Possibly a much needed one, but he wasn’t ready to concede that or the reasons for the turnaround.
“I will when we get home, and you’ll be weeping into your bedsheets.”
Zach snorted.
“It might pay you to go through the door first, Zach, as you are the plainest looking Deville after all. There will be little hope with the ladies if they see you in our company,” Nathan heckled him.
“Miss Lucrecia Smythe said she fell asleep each night thinking of my face,” Zach smirked.
“Poor woman, her nightmares must have been horrific.”
They stepped through and looked at the guests milling below. His eyes taking in the explosion of colors. Moving slowly through the people as he always did, he searched for her, knowing, of course, she would not be present. She’d gone, and it was likely he’d never see her again.
Which is a good thing, you idiot.
The Duchess of Yardly wore a hideous shade of peach, more orange, and it actually hurt his eyes. She was leaning on England’s most dangerous weapon, her cane. Beside her stood two women. Suddenly the air sucked from his lungs and he stumbled. Zach grabbed him as he pitched forward.
“What?” All humor was gone from his brother’s face.
“Nathan?” Gabe arrived at his side.
“I-I am well. Sorry, I just missed the step.”
Why was she here?

I was immediately pulled into this story. Since I’m a sucker for a second chance, this book was already something that appealed to me. Add in the suspense and political intrigue, and I was happier than a cat with her own garden of catnip. Once upon a time, Nathan and Beth were devoted to one another. They looked to be everything that fairy tales are made of. But their story took a detour. Now that Beth’s back in London society, can this pair move on from their shared past or are they doomed to repeat it? And will they be able to protect their families from the dangers they face? These two are so stubborn and willful. From the outside, it’s easy to see just how perfect they are for each other, but they’re both so caught up in their pain and duty they can’t see it for themselves. I loved all the sparks and banter between them. And it made me so happy to see all the cameo appearances, particularly my beloved Sinclair and Raven families. I’m already anxious to see where this series is going to go next.

Oh my, I love reading Wendy Vella. I so enjoyed this interesting storyline, and the characters, even down to the wonderful Deville's dog, which I couldn't help laughing at. I would love to have a dog like that. Heaps of suspense and danger.
I so love this author incorporating Sinclair and Raven characters too, as it's my favourite series. 5☆

Very likeable characters with strong personalities, sacrificial love for their families and their determined nature. Nothing like a mystery to add a little more sizzle to a regency. Although I wouldn't want to switch places with either character while they maze their way through this mystery, I indeed enjoyed reading their intense adventure and the emotional joy of their happy ending. As the web untangles and clouds clear, they discover one another on a whole new level. With the rekindling of old sparks and a deeper more substantial love added in, this kept me caught up in their journey back together again. Read this nonstop, love her feistiness and how compatible they are even when they disagree. Supporting characters are great, looking forward to the next one. I received a free advanced copy of this book and voluntarily chose to read and leave a review.

Hilarious and exciting !

Rescued by a Devil is the second installment of the Deville Brothers by Wendy Vella. This book has equal banter, romance, and danger as Wendy’s other ventures into Victorian era England . Nathan Seville is a wounded hero who is trying to protect his country and fight feelings for the one that got away. Bethany Carlow, the one that got away, is a strong willed heroine who is torn between protecting her family and protecting the man she still loves.
This book will have you whipping through the pages to see the end of the story. The plot wraps up nicely and along the way we are treated to other characters from Wendy’s Sinclair and Raven series as well as the Langley Sisters.
If you’re a fan of romance, wit, and adventure this is the perfect summer read !

Better than the first!

It doesn't happen often, but for me this story was better than Gabe & Dimity. I liked the intrigue, the second chance aspect and all the characters. It's fun when the author slips in a character from another series, in this case Sinclair's and Ravens - although also not surprising given the group Alexius. Beth and Nathan had their troubles and have learned quite a bit about each other in the process.

Rescued by a Devil tells the amazing story of love lost and love found. The Love story of Bethany Carlow and Nathanial Deville is told in a thrilling, tantalizing as suspense filled manner, that I simpy couldn´t put the book. I loved this book, the story is wonderful, the manner in which it is told is amazing, and could´nt read fast enough and what a shame when it came to an end because I just wanted more of their story. Also love the reapearance of old favorites like the Ravens and Sinclairs and some of the characters form the Langley series.

Loved, Loved, Loved this book.

Can´t wait for the next in The Deville Brothers Series

Miss Bethany Carlow left the man she loves abruptly with a letter that broke his heart. Gone for two years, she and her mother return to society, but she's not the same young woman she was two years ago. Nathaniel Deville wants nothing to do with the woman that left him. Yet his family thinks her behavior is off and where is her father? Russians, a thief, secret papers, a plan for an assassination and a man willing to do whatever it takes to save the woman he loves. Non-stop action with a family that never hesitates to protect each other and the King. These guys are good!

Wonderful new family

The only problem with a new Wendy Vella series is waiting for the next book. The best part is renewing old acquaintances. Loved the way the Sinclair's and Ravens were woven into the story. And especially loved the strength of love over time.

Rescued By A Devil is a spectacular historical romance by Wendy Vella. Ms. Vella once again delivers a book that is well-written and a smooth read. The characters are outstanding and my favorite part of this book. Bethany was forced to leave London and she continues trying to protect her family. Nathan was heartbroken when Bethany left, leaving only a note to him. Bethany and Nathan's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Wendy Vella. This book was so entertaining that for a few hours it made me forget the pain of surgery. It's that good. Rescued By A Devil is book 2 of The Deville Brothers Series but it can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Second Chances

Nathan had been in love with Bethany but 3 years ago she and her family left London and was not heard from. She has know reemerged into society and everyone is wondering where she has been.
Bethany and her family had to leave 3 years ago when her mother was kidnapped and safely returned to them but at a price. She and her father were and still are made to gather England’s secrets and give them to Russia all because of a mistake her father committed in his youth. She had to leave the only man she would ever love.
When the two come face to face again Nathan does everything he can to be cordial. As he sees her more and more during the seasons he can see fear and anguish in her eyes. Nathan needs to find out what happened 3 years ago. As he gets closer Bethany tells him to stay away from her to stay safe. He and his brothers believe she is the reason secrets are going missing and will find out why.
Can Nathan get to the truth before it’s too late. Another wonderful Deville sibling book. Can’t wait to read the next when it comes out.

This is a heart breaker for sure. Your heart will ache for the H/h (yes both) because of the decision of the h, both their hearts are torn in two. Three years ago they were in love and then it all ended when the h sent a note stating she didn't want him anymore. So the start of lies and deception begin for the h. She and her family leave town for 3 years and then as quickly as they departed London, they are back, minus the father.

I wish I could convey the emotions I felt reading this story. This is the second of the series and can be a stand alone. But, as with most series you have cross over character's and oh, how I love these brother's. Loved catching up with the Sinclair/Ravens too from her previous series. You will not be lost if you start with this one, just will make you feel like your visiting old friends if you read their series.

I am not a fan of stories that are based on lies/secrets. This has it in spades, but I understood it and it all made sense their decisions. The H is part of a secret group that protects the King. The h is being blackmailed to betray her Country or those she loves will meet with tragedy. This story is filled with suspense, intrigue, twists from beginning to the end.

The romance builds slowly. Since the H was so hurt by the way the h ended things, he is angry and fights the feelings he thought he let go 3 years ago. The h still loves him too, but denies it to keep him save. There is lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 and only described briefly. There are many funny scenes with a dog and a Duchess that were thrown in at the right moments.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic , Lord's name used in vain I believe twice, and some spice. I didn't think the author could improve on her Sinclair/Raven Series (highly recommend), but this is right up there too.

I received an early copy, all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)

The readers were introduced to the Deville brothers in an earlier book, The Lady's Forbidden Love, & we find what loving & protective brothers the four of them are for their sister, Abby (it doesn't matter if you have not read the earlier books, but it is a connection if you have). Book 1 Seduced by a Devil was a wonderful beginning to the series & Book 2 Rescued by a Devil introduces us to the second brother, Nathan Deville.

We got a glimpse of Nathan's past heartbreak in the first book - the love of his life had left him a short note that she didn't return his affections and she disappeared with her parents three years ago. Now, just as suddenly as she left, she & her mother are back in London - Nathan is experiencing all kinds of feelings but mainly anger & when he runs into the first time it will only cause more confusion & anger.

Miss Bethany Carlow (Beth) was forced to leave London after her family received threats - her heart was broken as she had to leave Nathan, the man she loved. She has been forced to return to London by the villain who threatened her family. Beth must do his bidding and steal some items he needs.

Nathan knows there is something Beth is not telling him. Beth knows Nathan will try to wear her down to tell her secrets. The feelings from the past cannot be denied plus we have treason, attempted murder, kidnapping, espionage, intrigue, Walter (the dog) is priceless, as is the Duchess of Yardly. All the brother's fun bantering, teasing is hilarious & visits from previous books was so wonderful & naturally, we have a HEA. Do not miss reading this series - it has it all & make sure you read "Want more?" at the end & click on the link for an epilogue 8 years down the road for Nathan, Bethany & Family. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

Another wonder book by Wendy Vella,
This is the second in the Deville Brothers series. The story is about brother Nathan and his lost love Beth who disappered from his life three years prior. Upon her unexcepted return to London and society throws Nathan into a state of anger and confusion. The two are thrown together on many occassions and eventually answers are given. It is difficult to state what is going on besides the situation of blackmail which had driven the family out of London and also forced Beth back to commit treason. As in the first book we are told of a secret society of protectors to the king. My love of Wendy's books are the relationships between her characters. We expect it among the main couple but not necessarily with the side characters. This is wonderful and she ties in previous characters from her other books and series, which makes it feel as if you are almost part of a big exciting happy family. You will love the communication between Nathan and his brothers. At times the bickering can be annoying but when you think back to your own siblings it makes you smile and occasionally laugh out loud. No matter how old you are you tend to revert back when around siblings and it brings a sense of joy when reading. Some of the plot and situations may not be tradional to the regency era, but it never takes away from my love of this authors books. This book gives you anger, revenge, adventure, excitement, jealousy, family, humor, a bit of steam, and of course Love. Give this author a chance and you will be drawn into her world. I received this book as an advanced reading copy and it was a true pleasure to read and the review is of my own personal opinion.

Suspense and Romance

I won this book from Goodreads. This book has everything to make it a good regency novel. Beth and Nathan had been in love when she broke his heart and left town three years earlier. Now Beth is back but is on a secret mission. She is terrified of running into Nathan because of her secret. Nathan is angry that Beth has returned because she broke his heart and doesn't want anything to do with her. However, they keep being thrown together and this makes Nathan angrier because she still gets to him. While Beth has her secrets, it turns out that Nathan also has his. He and his brothers are part of a secret society whose job is to protect that of king and country. They are made aware that someone is stealing secrets and selling them to Russia. Nathan doesn't realize that his new mission is tied to Beth's secrets. Once he finds out, will this change how he feels towards her? I love the push and pull between Nathan and Beth and I absolutely loved Walter. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Real love is based on trust.

Bethany Carlow broke Nathanial Deville's heart, but she can never tell him why. Now all that remains is regret, anger, danger and secrets.

Rescued by a Devil is another example of Wendy Vella's easy writing style and talented ability to weave together an engrossing tale. I have loved the Deville family since Abby's starring role in book seven of the Langley Sisters series. All of the Deville brothers are easy-to-fall-in-love-wtih heroes that lead a double life in service to the crown. Like his brothers, Nathan is strong and protective, but when hurt he is unforgiving. That is until truth is revealed. Likewise, all of the heroines are strong willed, passionate and courageous. Which is why Nathan and Beth were so perfect together. Oh, and don't even get me started on adorable Walter.

As an added bonus to an already great read, I loved the cameo appearances by family members from the Sinclair & Raven series, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Stratton from the Regency Rakes series. If you have not read the books in these two series, you really should.

Content 411: This book contains a moderate amount of secular and religious swearing, as well as two moderately described sexually intimate scenes.

Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from the author. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.

Three years after Bethany Carlow broke the heart of Nathanial Deville by disappearing without an explanation, she and her mother are suddenly back in London and socializing with the Ton again. Nathan tries his best to be civil to Beth while guarding his still shattered heart, but when her unexplained activities intersect with investigations Nathan and his brothers are undertaking as part of an elite protection force for the king, he is determined to get to the bottom of her situation and assist her, whether she wants his help or not. The sarcastic brotherly banter among the brothers and the lovable Walter round out why I loved this book. This is the second Deville Brothers book and a wonderful standalone suspense story, however, many well loved characters from Ms. Vella’s previous books, not only the excellent Seduced by a Devil (The Deville Brothers Book 1) but the entire amazing Sinclair and Raven series, make appearances in this story. It was lovely to visit once again with old friends! The entire series is a delight and well worth reading. This book was provided by the author without any requirement for a review, positive or otherwise. All opinions are 100% my own.

Nathan Deville was left heartbroken by the innocent Bethany Carlow... Now, three years later, she is back in London Society. Her return brings new questions as to why she and her family suddenly left before, with only a note to cut worse than a sword.

Not only is Nathan Deville angry about her return, but the rest of his family as well. This suits Beth fine as her main goal is to save her family. Beth is no longer that innocent girl Nathan fell in love with - life has changed her.

No matter the distance the two try to place between them, it is impossible for either to forget what they had or what they could have. This is a story rooted in the old saying, "love conquers all".

I not only loved reading Nathan and Beth's journey back to one another, but the bits that incorporated characters from other stories/series! Wendy Vella has a gift with intertwining her stories in the most natural and fun ways. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!
