Critical Race Theory in Education: A Scholar's Journey

Rate this book
This important volume brings together key writings from one of the most influential education scholars of our time. In this collection of her seminal essays on critical race theory (CRT), Gloria Ladson-Billings seeks to clear up some of the confusion and misconceptions that education researchers have around race and inequality. Beginning with her groundbreaking work with William Tate in the mid-1990s up to the present day, this book discloses both a personal and intellectual history of CRT in education. The essays are divided into three Critical Race Theory, Issues of Inequality, and Epistemology and Methodologies. Ladson-Billings ends with a postscript that looks back at her journey and considers what is on the horizon for other scholars of education. Having these widely cited essays in one volume will be invaluable to everyone interested in understanding how inequality operates in our society and how race affects educational outcomes. Featured 1. Gloria Ladson-Billings has written a book full of contemplation, which is challenging to read and process at times. It isn't an easy read because of conditions society has systematically put into place and policies and procedures that have been put into place for quite some time. However, I believe this book is a must-read for anyone interested in racial relationships or diversity, equity, and inclusion. If you read it, keep an open mind and actively think about what the author is trying to explain, then go out and open your eyes to the world we find ourselves living within. If you do this all with a researcher's mind, you will have started a journey. As a parting thought, Gloria Ladson-Billings challenges us to all talk about race as a way to redefine the definition and to change the color-blind policies and procedures found within our worldview. A must-read!

This book consists of a collection of Ladson-Billings's essays on critical race theory and issues on racism, epistemology, and research methodologies. The book ends with her journey and enhanced views for other scholars. I struggled to read this book because I needed to re-read some parts to clarify and understand how inequality operates in our society. The book's most powerful statement is that The United States is founded on property rights, not human rights.
