Heartbreak #1

The Rules of Heartbreak

Rate this book
I never used to live my life by rules.

At least not until my fiancé betrayed me, turning my entire world upside down.

Unsure of how to move on, my luck seemed to suddenly change. My estranged mother's last gift to me before she died landed on my doorstep, giving me the opportunity to start my life over.

I snatched up the chance to leave my life behind in Minnesota, opening my arms up to the hot, sunny weather of Texas.

It was easy to start over in unfamiliar territory, my unofficial rules of heartbreak worn on my chest like a badge of honor.

But along with the house my mother left came a new neighbor. An obnoxious neighbor with dangerous glaring eyes and a set of abs that should be considered illegal. He was mysterious and full of secrets, a story hidden behind his hard exterior.

Before I knew it, Dallas Beckett was about to break all my rules.

I just didn't realize he had his own set, and I was about to put every one of them to the test.

This is my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it. She weaved a beautiful story filled with banter and touching moments that will warm your heart.

Sloan is looking for a fresh new start and moves to Texas after inheriting a home from her estranged mother. She left a horrible situation in Minnesota and vows to not allow that to happen again. Wants to try to mend her broken heart.

She hopes to make some new friends in her new area. She wants to start with the neighbor across the street. With his t shirt stretched by sexy muscles, with not a smile to be seen and with grease stains painting his grumpy face she's determined to talk to him. Their encounter was nothing like what she had hoped. He looked at her like she was nothing despite her ending in quite a peculiar fashion after running into him. After how he treated her, barely speaking and being crass - she hopes to not talk to him again.

Dallas isn't looking for anything beyond the physical. He is fine just enjoying a woman's company and then sending her on her way. He is broken and masks his pain in women and his business. He has steel walls placed around his heart. Don't let his grumpiness sway you, he is hurting something fierce.

Fate has other plans for Sloan though and she can't get away from him. He is always there. Maybe she needs to just be his friend. Maybe he'll come around and let go of some of the hurt that has crippled his life.
This storty was a sweet, emotional and sexy read. We are taken on quite the journey with these two. It's messy, but it's so worthwhile. I adored both of them so much! They make you feel it all - the heartache, the passion, the trepidation, the fear and longing and the hope.
Can't wait to see what happens with the next couple in this series!

This was a great love story of two people who both vowed to never love again. Sloan has just gone through a horrible ordeal with her ex and decided to start over in Texas. Texas was convenient since her mother left her a house. Dallas is a bar owner who lives across from Sloane's new house. He has had a bad experience that has left his heart shattered. He has a heart of gold and might be one of the sweetest male characters I have read.

They meet and their attraction is real. But Dallas acts like a jerk and pushes her away. Their paths cross again and these two find themselves thrust into each others lives for the foreseeable future. This was a great love story from start to finish and it didn't feel forced or rushed. I loved watching these two work through their own issues and heal and come together. There were some funny scenes with other characters that I'd love to have their own books. It was a pleasant addition to Dallas and Sloane's story. Definitely recommend this one!

“You not only bent my rules, you also shattered them.”

The Rules of Heartbreak is the first time I’ve read Brittany Taylor and it definitely will not be my last. I devoured this story in one sitting and was absolutely immersed in Dallas and Sloan’s tale of heartbreak and love. It was full of angsty deliciousness and was soooo good!

“Heartbreak has a way of motivating you to change the pieces of your life you haven’t necessarily been satisfied with.”

Both Dallas and Sloan had been hurt by love in the past and now have rules in place to prevent further pain, but they are inexplicably drawn to each other. While trying to keep their rules in place, they grow closer. But when the secrets they’ve been keeping from each other are exposed, will their rules be enough to keep their hearts safe and prevent further heartbreak?

“It was fast and messy, but you were more than I ever could have imagined. You pieced me back together.”

I loved, loved, loved this story. Dallas and Sloan instantly drew me into their story with their hate to love story. Their banter kept me on my toes and their chemistry steamed up my kindle. I love a story full of angst that tears your heart out and The Rules of Heartbreak was perfection.

I absolutely 💯 despise the dead ex trope, its worse when it's the dead ex WIFE trope. 😭🚩

Now this book was a low angst read, but I hardly felt that connection between the h and H. I felt like the heroine was second best to the H and his grief for losing his wife. Hailey the wife, was literally mentioned a bit in this book, which wasn't an issue but I wasn't convinced that the H loved the h by the end of the story.

Also didn't like the H at all. I hate when men are hot and cold, and that goes for fictional men. And this guy severely lacked communication skills. He wanted to know all of the heroines secrets but wasn't willing reveal any of his own. 🙄

The next book is about the best friends of both the H and h. Is this interesting enough to carry on? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Idk. Maybe I'll skim through the next.

But unpopular opinion, I was certainly not a fan. ⚠️

Sloan has moved from a terrible situation in Minnesota to a house she inherited from her mother in Texas. Dallas is the good looking next door neighbor with ideas and rules of his own. The two are not friendly at first then things change for them. Dallas and Sloan will break your heart and put it back together by the end of this story.

A Sexy Heart-Clenching Romance-I LOVED IT!

Author Brittany Taylor’s tagline, that she writes Sexy, Heart-Clenching Romances perfectly describes this book, RULES OF HEARTBREAK. It is a mission statement that has been perfectly executed. She grabbed my heart in her literary fist and squeezed hard, capturing my attention and not letting go until I’d read the last word – with tears running down my face. Believe me when I say that I am an ugly crier. My family no longer even bother to mock me for putting myself through the torture of reading gorgeously written heart-wrenching romances. They just shake their heads and move on with life, this time leaving me to sob into paper-towels, with only Ms Taylor’s marvellous characters for company.

Seriously, once started, you will not want to put this book down. Even upon interruption, you have to know that the look of death cast upon the interuptee just does not work, but believe me, you’ll be trying it anyway. The story is just that good.

Ms Taylor let our heart-broken hero, Dallas Beckett, keep his past a secret for quite some time, and I was chomping at the bit to find out exactly what event had occurred to shut him down. To isolate himself from his friends, his sister, his music and his business. It had to have been big. Well it was and it left him and me with a broken heart.

As far as Sloan Montgomery was concerned, she’d long carried abandonment in her heart, and finding her fiancée and best friend cheating on her, on the dining table, was the last straw. Then she found out that the mother she’d thought was dead had in fact only recently died, bequeathing her a house in Texas, giving her the opportunity to leave her life in Minnesota and start again. Armed with her new life’s rules, she left her broken heart behind.

Two people incredibly attracted to each other, even if they didn’t want to be. Two people caving to an intense desire, creating rules to avoid more heartbreak than they’d already suffered, the written chemistry between them was so hot on the romance that surely there was no way that they couldn’t fall in love with each other as much as I’d fallen in love with their story. I knew that the wheels just had to fall off and when Ms Taylor ramped the angst up higher, that’s when the tears started again.
What an amazing story RULES OF HEARTBREAK was. I loved everything about it from the characters and their friends through to the execution of the plot. It was addictive, romantic, steamy and angsty. In fact it was everything that makes a book 5-Star perfect as far as I am concerned.

Remember, this is Book One in The Heartbreak series, so we all have Vada and Colton’s story to look forward to, and believe me; I am!!! 💔💖✶

When Sloan uproots her whole life and moves to Austin, TX she has five rules to live by. She has suffered enough heartbreak for a lifetime and will do everything she can to follow these rules to protect her heart!

When Dallas catches a glimpse of his new neighbor he immediately sees how attractive she is and wonders what she is doing in the house across the street. He decides to steer clear of this new addition to the neighborhood, keeping to himself like he has for the past year.

But Sloan and Dallas are both surprised when they literally run into one another on the street. They both feel this odd connection to one another even though they just met. They seem to continue to be thrown together despite trying to avoid all interactions. Between work and being neighbors they are bound to cross paths. As time passes they both find it hard to fight their mutual attraction so they make a deal, complete with new rules to protect them both! But aren’t rules meant to be broken? With lies and secrets between them and their worlds, it seems like everything is against them. Their pasts are working hard to keep them from falling in love, fear gripping them both and holding on for dear life! Can they both survive the fall or will they crash and burn?

I loved everything about this book! The journey these two characters take individually while developing feelings for one another is so intriguing! They both want to fight their connection but they just can’t! I loved the element of suspense this author used to keep me wondering about Dallas’ past and how it would play into Sloan’s present…and then she just drops everything within the span of a few chapters, leaving my jaw literally on the floor while I’m sobbing! This journey was far from easy, but like everything in life it’s not worth it if you didn’t have to work for it! I can’t wait for more in the Heartbreak Series!

Talk about to people that found each other at the perfect time. Sloan and Dallas are two heartbroken people who are afraid to feel and heal. Sloan moved to Texas to start a new life when she was cheated on and betrayed. Moving Into the house she inherited from her estranged mother was an emotional journey. Dallas is her grumpy neighbor and new boss. He has pain in his eyes and a major wall up. As these two get two know each other they slowly knock down each other’s walls and grow as people. Oh wow did I love This book!!! The raw emotions just poured from the pages. They both had strong supportive friends and family that just wanted to help. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I’m excited about getting to know this group better.

Aw!

This was a sweet, emotional journey for two people that really didn’t want to feel.
Dallas and his walls, and Sloan with her rules. They each had their line in the sand, but once it got crossed… well it was on like Donkey Kong.
I’m definitely interested in seeing where this series goes.

The Rules of Heartbreak was an emotional adventure into love getting what it wants even if you fight it. This was my first read by Brittany Taylor and it will not be my last.
Before Sloan's fiance betrayed her, she never lived her life with rules. But he flipped her world upside down. Everything starts looking up when she inherits a house from her estranged mother after her death. The house is located in Texas so she jumps at the opportunity to get out of her stressful situation in Montana and move there. She’s excited about making new friends and decides to start with one of her new neighbors. Unfortunately, the interaction takes an extremely negative turn. Dallas Beckett came across as obnoxious, angry acting, mysterious, secretive and extremely sexy. Both have been hurt and both have rules in place to keep them from being hurt again. What happens when they start breaking rules for each other?
This was a really emotional read. I was able to feel their individual pains as well as the positive emotions that started entering the picture. I was able to really relate to Sloan. The angst created from their situation fed my addiction quite nicely. The chemistry between them created an intense explosion of heat when the tension broke. I really enjoyed the plot. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a romance that leaves you feeling hopeful by the end. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

I don’t really know how to feel about this book. There’s just grief thrown in here and there but there doesn’t seem to be a point to it. Dallas lost his wife, he’s grieving, but we never see him actively working to get that grief out of the way. He stops playing music, doesn’t talk about Hailey, then he just falls in love with Sloan and that’s it. Instant heal. Then there’s Sloan who just moved from Minnesota to Texas after her ex-fiancé cheated on her with her best friend. She just creates her own set of rules to prevent herself from heartbreak again, but that’s all we get out of it. I also think she’s too much of a pushover. Then there’s that whole drama with her mom and…

I didn’t click with this book. It’s not to say that it’s a bad book, but it wasn’t for me.

What a heartwrenching story! I loved Dallas for it and my heart just broke for him, for what he has gone through in the past year. Then after what they've been through, my heart also broke for Sloan. She has also experience her own heartbreak but that was only a fraction of what she went through with Dallas. That guy is tough to crack. And they had these rules to prevent another heartbreak but they're bound to break those rules anyway. Because they're inevitable.

I definitely loved their story! I also can't wait for Vada and Colton’s story.

Sloan's got nothing left for her, so moving to a new state to start over is perfect. Sure, she'll miss her brother and his husband, but they can come visit anytime. Now she just needs to settle in, make new friends and wait out the summer until her new teaching job starts. Perhaps her new hot neighbor is willing to be friendly. A couple of encounters later where he makes it clear he's not interested in even giving her his name, and Sloan's taken him off her list. Finding a new friend, and job, at a local bar, though, that will work. If only her grumpy neighbor hadn't already stamped his ownership all over the place. If only she could keep her heart from falling for the man as they find a mutual attraction exists, one they can indulge with no feelings involved.

Dallas knows he comes across as a playboy without a heart, but he doesn't care. His deep seated pain is no one's business, even to his new neighbor, the woman who's starting to slip past the walls he's built up to protect his heart. Can he open up completely to Sloan, or is he (and she) doomed to living his life with only one great love in his heart?

This story broke my heart a little (a lot). Dallas was in so much pain and it had kept him so distant from everyone. The way he hurt Sloan near the end was seriously painful, but even in that I could sympathize with him because his hurt was just so encompassing that it guided his behavior without him even realizing it. His and Sloan's story got to my heart, it was emotionally substantial, steamy, and made me so happy at the end. I can't wait to read more from this author now.

Sloan has had enough of Minnesota and all the painful memories it holds for her. She needs a fresh start, and her estranged mother has just given her the opportunity at one. It involves a free place to live and a relocation to Texas. So, with her broken heart in tow, Sloan packs up her belongings and leaves Minnesota in the rear view mirror. But nothing could have prepared her for what she finds waiting for her in Texas...

The Rules of Heartbreak is a wonderfully penned tale of a young woman in search of a fresh start and all the unexpected things that come along with it. The "unexpected" part being the handsome new neighbor she discovers living across the street from her new home. Jumping into another relationship and risking her heart again aren't on the menu, but friendship is, but she soon learns that he isn't into making friends. So, she counts her losses and moves on, but fate has a funny way of continually throwing them onto one another's paths, and before long they find themselves wanting more than friendship from one another. It takes a bit of time to get to that point though, as Dallas is a tad bit grumpy and not so social... it's a slow burn kind of thing. But one that is well worth the wait!

I absolutely loved what I found waiting for me between the pages here, as soon as I met these characters I didn't want to let them go. The drew me in, had me intrigued, and I couldn't wait to see what would come next. Their story was one that tugged on the heartstrings, but it also inspired a few laughs and swoons too! What a great first time read, it had everything you could want in a romance story and so much more! Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

So good

The Rules of Heartbreak by Brittany Taylor
This was a great book and a first for me from this author. It’s a great story about starting over and of two jaded hearts learning to love again. This is Sloans and Dallas. Sloan is new in town wanting to start her life over after catching her fiance and best friend together. She moves to Texas to a house she has inherited and there she meets her neighbor Dallas. Dallas wants nothing to do with the new neighbor. You will definitely swoon for broody, moody super handsome Dallas. I loved how the author gave Dallas a back story that will break your heart a bit or a lot. I loved this book and recommend.

Being new to Ms.Taylor's work i've been looking so forward to picking up her books! As soon as this one was announced it caught my eye and i knew i had to read it first! I got into the Heartbreak world quickly. I enjoyed this story!

Dallas and Sloan's journey grabbed my attention right from the start! I really liked how these two were neighbors and that their story isn't exactly an easy one. I wasn't sure what all to expect which pulled me into it even more. I felt many things with both characters from start to finish which i so enjoyed!

With The Rules of Heartbreak, Ms.Taylor has created a good read! I am so looking forward to picking up more of her work!

This is my first book by this author and it will not be my last, that’s for sure!

I really enjoyed how she developed the characters and the story line with the right amount of spicy. I did go on an emotional roller coaster throughout this story as everything developed.

In this book we meet Sloan who just found out her mother left her a house is Austin, Texas at the perfect time in her life. We go in the ride with Sloan as she gets to know herself and her mother she didn’t know was alive. We also meet her broody neighbor Dallas who is going through his own things in life and they are just drawn together.

I can’t wait to see what happens with the other characters we meet in this book as supporting characters.

I received this book as an ARC and leave this review willingly.

Oh the angst, the pain, the heartbreak…I loved it.

The moment that Sloan moved into that house, and Liam commented about the man across the street, knew things were about to get interesting.

From the literal run in , to the restaurant, to everything else that happened, I was hooked.

Watching these two finally come together, only to be separated, and then everything that led to their reunion, had me not wanting to put my kindle down.

Absolutely enjoyed reading the book, and am ready for Vada and Colton’s story!

The rules of Heartbreak is an angsty book about two characters trying to protect their hearts while inevitably falling for each other. Sloan moves after suffering a monumental betrayl to her heart. There she meets her grumpy neighbor Dallas. Dallas has experienced his own pain and is looking to avoid his neighbor at all costs but fate has different plans for these two. Finally tired of fighting thr connection they jump into a relationship held up with rules. Those rules start getting broken along the way. This book was great! It had steam and angst! Both characters went through a lot of pain and seeing Dallas' past unravel at the very end had me furiously reading to see what happened next.

Definitely a good read, slow in the middle

This book was good overall but some parts were slow. Other parts did not develop in a fluid manner and left me kind of confused as to how certain things happened. The spice was GREAT!! I’d say this was an emotional read as well. Overall I’d give a 3.5!!
