Nathan Grant, an Aussie student at Warrawul Boarding School, has a pretty normal life. A chance encounter with a flesh-eating Homunculus turns all that upside-down! Savagely killed by the creature, Nathan is brought back to life by the Alchemic Warrior, Astrid Rachelle. In so doing, she bestows upon him the powers of the Arms Alchemy his soul in weapon form. Determined to use this power to its fullest value, Nathan joins Astrid on a hunt for the Homunculi infesting his town, before his friends and sister become lunch.
I met the author at a night market and as I always like to encourage my fellow writers, I bought a copy of one his books; this one. I don't read much in this genre, but I'd decided to have a crack.
The Starlight Lancer is fast, flashy, and fun; an entertaining comic book romp full of action, violence and humour. It is a nicely constructed story which makes sense in the world Cooper creates, but it lacks depth. The characters are caricatures and as they are all teenagers, I found it hard to connect with them. In fact, I didn't which is why despite liking the book and enjoying the action, I only gave it three stars.
I would have liked The Starlight Lancer more if, as I said above, there was more depth to the characters and if the author hadn't have used so many strange words. For example, 'maw' which is a good word but was overused as was 'bark' which was often used to describe how the characters spoke to each other. The vocabulary was generally great; just a bit distracting at times.
I expect in future installments of the AXOM Saga there will be more character development and a maturation and refining of Cooper's style so it would be worth reading more of the adventures of The Starlight Lancer.
So basically it's a cross between Full Metal Alchemist and Power Rangers. It's aggressively cringe, but I enjoyed it, for reasons I'm not sure I fully understand. Keep writing Mr. Cooper. Don't let your memes be dreams!
