When we last left Pure and Akira, they had a little bit of a moment during a visit to the amusement park. While Akira tries to sort her feelings out, all kinds of things are brewing in the background. When an unexpected antagonist appears out of left field, will Akira’s chance of happiness simply disappear?
What is going on in this flipping book!? Argh, it is killing me not knowing what’s going on. Half the appeal here is the strange insertion of an apparent sci-fi premise into a rather standard yuri romance. It is one of the weirdest mash-ups I’ve ever seen and it actually works!
And the romance is perfectly serviceable - Akira herself hates romance because of what her dad did to her mom, so she is reluctant to label anything brewing between Pure and her as anything of the sort (kissing friends my Aunt Fanny). The very definition of her own worst enemy, but I like that they give her a realistic motivation for it.
Pure, at least, is completely confident that Akira is the only one for her, up until the point that, well, you can just read and see for yourself. Despite her cheerful visage, Pure really gets put through some stuff this volume. We’ve had hints that things are not what they seem, but we find out here that there’s at least one unreliable narrator at work, possibly two.
It ends in a corny as heck declaration that appears to be building to something climactic and then turns out to have been building to something else entirely. The cliffhanger that ends this volume is an absolute masterpiece of ‘give me the next volume of this right NOW’ with two perfect full page panels that I read multiple times just from the shock. It’s out of nowhere, but not out of possibility, given how this series has established itself.
I have absolutely no idea where this book is going and even less where it came from at this stage and it’s wonderful because of it. The little bit of mystery makes this and the yuri part is perfectly fine in service to these two getting together (there’s a very interesting take on dependence in this volume, I will say that).
When our villain emerges out of nowhere and we get some nebulous hints of what’s happening (if they’re even true), it just whets the appetite perfectly. I have a hunch what the true goal is here, one borne out of an inability to forgive mixed with a refusal to let go of the past (ironic in a story that is quite likely about time travel).
It nicely contrasts Pure, who is using this as an opportunity to change things for the better, with her “opponent”, who wants to try and simply restore things to how they were, mired in amber. At least I think so, maybe it’ll turn out to be world domination.
3 star story, 4 star execution. The yuri portions of this are very sweet and silly and fine on their own, but the story I’m invested in is what surrounds it. I know the two stories will come together, they are indeed intertwined, but you can’t expect me to not want to know the whole story with an ending line that.
(Side note - As I was pondering this volume’s complexities I did have a horrible thought where it could be going and I assure you if it does head that way you will hear me screaming blue murder in my review.)
Pure and Akira continue to grow closer. Or are they? After a somewhat confrontational and odd discussion alone with Ruri, Akira's brother, it's made apparent he knows the truth, about who Pure is and where she actually came from. He deduces that something bad happens to his sister in the future. Pure appeals to him to help her save Akira, but Ruri laughs it off, & throws it in Pure's face that maybe that since "this time" (?) Pure came back, is Pure REALLY still Akira's fiancée? Or did Pure coming back change everything, now & future? Ruri implies he's going to use the info he's gleaned against Pure and Akira, and he alludes to a nefarious act of some sort he's going to commit, in order to get the future he wants. Ok stop right there. How does Ruri know so much about the future? Is he too from the future, inhabiting his younger body, much like Pure is doing with her younger self? Are Pure and Akira a couple in the future, or not? And is something terrible going to befall Akira? If so, is Ruri responsible or involved? And can Pure stop him, and save the girl she loves? Regardless, Ruri's smug aire of superiority starts making Pure start second guessing everything, and Akira notices a wall has gone up between them, and she blames herself, not knowing about her brother's machinations. The volume ends with Akira determined to tell Pure she loves her & wants to be with her. Akira has realized that she truly loves Pure, and is only content when Pure is at her side. The school festival is in full swing. Pure gets called up to the roof to participate in a game involving shouting through a megaphone what your heart desires, so the whole school can hear. Pure shouts her love and devotion for Akira (without naming her), Akira hears it, and realizes its imperative she tell Pure she reciprocates her love as soon as she can. Akira races up the stairs, and bursts out onto the roof. Pure is crying, but suddenly filled with joy to see Akira. Akira starts to tell Pure she loves her, and as she approaches, there's suddenly this bizarre burst of static, and Pure disappears right before Akira's eyes. Akira takes another step, then suddenly grows greatly confused. She doesn't seem to remember Pure at all. Akira no longer knows why she came to the school roof. So what I want to know is, what the hell did Ruri do? The present suddenly changed, for the worse, it appears. Where's Pure, and why does Akira suddenly no longer remember Pure? Ruri has to be involved. And who's this mysterious woman he's suddenly spending all his time with? How does she play into this? This is an absolutely heart-wrenching cliffhanger to end this volume on. Now I'm gonna rack my brain, trying to figure out what's happened, how it happened, and what's going to happen next. I have a very uneasy feeling. The next volume can't get here soon enough.
guys please. this is so wack. it was already bad enough that a mentally 24 year old was romantically going after a 15/16 year old, but on page 28 Pure literally says "If I were your little sister, now that would be bliss!" TO HER CHILD LOVE INTEREST. like.... incest??? no??? i'm tired
again, the 4 Koma was better than the manga. there was a little more plot here, but it seemed dry because there was almost no background characterization or side plots. this would be better if it were slowed down and the world developed more.
We get to see a little flashback into the reason why Akira hates romance and it definitely helps you understand her more, and why she keeps shutting Pure down. However, in this volume, it seems like Akira is starting to open up to the fact that maybe she does have feelings for Pure and I’m all for it to be honest. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next, I just hope the next volume is a little faster paced.
Slightly better than the first volume. Rounded up to 3 stars. This book suffers ALOT from middle book syndrome, a lot of inner monologues, will they won't they, but a really good cliffhanger. Though also the first book suffered from being the intro. And felt like it didn't stand on its own well, it just existed to set up the series. If you read just that volume you wouldn't be satisfied. But because of that the final volume REALLY needs to deliver. This series is odd because I'm never sure where it's going, the first volume I was half thinking that Pure made up the time travel thing. Anyways this volume had some good romance drama, idk I'm sick of will they won't they stories even though I keep reading them. I love romance but most romance manga is will they won't they. Anyways I have more faith in this series. Akira gets more development, even Pure is less of a comedic character and has more of an actual character. I do want them to get together.
Random nitpick. I don't like the brief "oh maybe it's just platonic, friends can kiss" part. Because it's advertised like a romance manga, and they seem to be going down the romance manga. But idk it was just weird for them to make it look like it was gonna be a QPR story for a second. Which I don't have a problem with (in fact I think there should be more pairs in fiction that are platonic but affectionate), but it's advertised as romance. Though ig in context of the story makes sense cuz Akira rejects romance for so long ig she's kinda grasping at straws to explain away her obvious mutual feelings.
Anyways back to the review, yeah this was an improvement. Felt way more focused and made me care more about Akira, I do like how she's flawed but you still root for her. You learn more about her family situation and her conflicting feelings about Pure.
Alright volume. Right now this series is a beautiful mess. I'm hoping the last volume will really dazzle me. So far the series is looking at a 5/10.
This was my least favorite book of the series. The thoughts of the characters don’t make a lot of sense since it doesn’t go along with their personalities or what we have known of them. The MC and her insecurities make sense, but what frustrated me the most is how the love interest just seems to give up on her feelings, wanting to at least become her friend. It makes sort of sense because she wants to be with her amore forever, but the way the brother was portrayed made her thoughts not make much sense (she seemed extremely confident before, but breaks down with only a sentence).
4 stars. That ending! Wow. I’m jumping into volume three right now because what the actual hell was that? This was a really good volume. Pure and Akira are both very interesting characters and I like how complex Akira’s feelings are and just how messy they are. She has feelings for Pure but she also doesn’t want to fall in love so there’s some good angst there. I also liked the scene with Akira and her estranged father, very touching. On to volume three!
More of a 3.5 star rating; This volume was a rollercoaster to me. I don’t know whether to be more confused and frustrated, or sad and angry about the ending. All I know is that I’m very worried and need to read the next volume as soon as it gets published in English.
Well that was certainly a volume!! There was lots of things revealed and yet I am still left with a ton of questions! I am so glad that I have the final volume because I would hate to be stuck on such a cliff hanger!!!!
Also a little weirded out by that line on page 28, was it really necessary + the fact that Pure is like mentally 24 and physically 17 while Akira is physically 17
I enjoyed this slightly more than the first one as I felt the plot start to pick up and the characters became more dynamic. I am excited to read the third one.
Volume 2 I feel the same way I did in volume one it’s cute but nothing remarkable and once again the side story at the end was more interesting to me than the main couple and story.
'Strawberry Fields Once Again' continues to be fun on two levels; I'm enjoying how well it goes between the one side, which is a light love story for an insecure person dealing with a sudden inexplicable affection, and the other, which is shaping up to be a melodramatic time-travel story about desperate actions in an unforgivable time-line.
I liked this volume more than the first one. It started to get more interesting in this volume as the plot picked up and the girls got closer. The ending makes it so I have to read the next one right away. The twist in this volume kinda confused me and made Pure seem a bit creepier. Hopefully they explain this more in the next volume.
